NOT READY!!!// NYT: NSA's info snarfing had to be reduced because the data was overwhelming
— Purple Avenger

This is something I've remarked on in comments previously. Its possible to have too much information if the retention selection criteria are too loose.

... In a world of ballooning communications, the agency is sometimes simply overwhelmed. In 2008, the N.S.A.’s Middle East and North Africa group set about updating its Sigint collection capabilities. The “ambitious scrub” of selectors — essentially search terms — cut the number of terms automatically searched from 21,177 to 7,795 and the number of messages added to the agency’s Pinwale database from 850,000 a day to 450,000 a day.

The reduction in volume was treated as a major achievement, opening the way for new collection on Iranian leadership and Saudi and Syrian diplomats, the report said...

***Put stuff here about combinatorial explosion
***Put stuff here about curse of dimensionality

This was lingering in draft, and I'm probably not going to ever finish it..but its interesting anyway.

18 Yes, if reports were correct than the NSA was collecting far more information than they could possibly process in real time.  It's impossible to write an algorithm to sift through data that is current to the minute.  What is and what is not important changes from second to second.

That tells me that the information was mostly for future reference.  Only after analysts know what they're looking for can they go back over the information to look for patterns.

Let me clarify:  The claim that information collected illegally by the Obama administration could be used to "protect" anyone in real time, is impossible.

Even the 'good intentions' excuse doesn't pan out.

Posted by: rev dr teej at November 25, 2013 08:27 AM (X0gUV)

145 Normally I indent braces, always line them up vertically (not that abominable K/R style), and always put them on a line of their own to promote clarifying white space, but comment formatting is primitive...

146 I came up in that generation of the mid-90's whose comp. sci. 101 textbooks taught Java, for the first time, not C++. So I was raised on the 1TBS/modified K&R that was in Sun's styleguide. Even in the wilderness years when writing god-awful PHP, I styled my braces that way, contrary to their conventions. Now that I earn my bread'n'butter doing front-end web stuff, churning out 1000's of lines of JavaScript everyday, 1TBS is pretty much necessary if you're gonna be consistent (Allman- or related-styles will get you in trouble in your return statements). Appreciate all the tech-junkie posts that you contribute, Purpster. A nice contribution to the Horde's daily readings.
