NYT shocker: Global warming averted impending ice age [Purp]
— Open Blogger

After having beaten us senseless with "the stick" for years now...they finally get around to admitting what "the carrot" is.

The climate then stabilized at relatively warm temperatures about 10,000 years ago, hitting a plateau that lasted for roughly 5,000 years, the paper shows. After that, shifts of incoming sunshine prompted a long, slow cooling trend.

The cooling was interrupted, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, by a fairly brief spike during the Middle Ages, known as the Medieval Warm Period. (It was then that the Vikings settled Greenland, dying out there when the climate cooled again.)

Scientists say that if natural factors were still governing the climate, the Northern Hemisphere would probably be destined to freeze over again in several thousand years. “We were on this downward slope, presumably going back toward another ice age,” Dr. Marcott said.

Instead, scientists believe the enormous increase in greenhouse gases caused by industrialization will almost certainly prevent that.

So, can someone explain to me again why mile thick glaciers over the northern states are desirable again? I missed that explanation the first time.

I read the essay about the motley bunch known as the French Foreign Legion (link in the post below). It was quite interesting, but the author had to fly his lib flag. He wrote about how the French officers in the Legion have a "deeply reactionary" worldview and gave this as an example:

"In the southern city of Nîmes,..., a French officer complained to me about the local citizens. He said, “They speak about their rights, their rights, their rights. Well, what about their responsibilities? In the Legion we don’t speak about our rights. We speak about our duties!”

 I said, “It angers you.”

He looked at me with surprise, as if to say, And you it does not?"

The officer sounds to me like one of the few sensible people in France, but apparently any talk about "responsibilities" and "duties" makes you "deeply reactionary" these days.

Jay Guevara and eman - not a scientist, but scientifically literate (well, in my youth), never really lost touch with it, and most of all understand logic and scientific method (the real keys, in any case).  Sort of a logic geek, actually.

Anyway - WTF?  I have thought, all along, like you two - these people have no idea what they are talking about.  From the get-go, AGW "science" has seemed ridiculous to me.  And un-scientific.  A very, very outlandish hypothesis (to me) - that CO2 unleashed by man could significantly affect the climate.   The troposphere is not a "greenhouse", no matter what you release into it.  It doesn't even resemble a greenhouse.

Which gets at the over-arching logical and scientific problem.  We cannot characterize the workings of global climate.  There may not be "global" climate (why, for example, was the northern hemisphere so different than the southern in the last big temperature event?) - "global average temperature" seems a meaningless and unfounded idea from several angles.  So we (they) don't know if it's a system, or a system of systems, and they can't build models with reproducible results that exceed that of random number generators - but they come out with pronouncements and anything other than "gee, our models are meaningless, we don't understand the basic mechanics or architecture or key factors here yet"?

It's ridiculous - and patently so.  To even a casual but literate and logical outsider.  WTF?  The corruption of almost all institutions is of course obvious all around us (by "institutions" I include basic values and little boring building blocks of civilization and particularly American achievement, such as a public service ethic, integrity, etc.).  But science, too?

A good friend's brother is the chair of a physical science dept. at a major eastern university (physics, not "climate").  Big deal.  My friend has gently prodded him over the last few years to confront the corruption and ethical and substantive crisis in "climate science".  The brother initially just couldn't believe anyone would do such things (fake data, lie about data, hide data, punk the peer review process, politicize/propagandize/scheme to promote their field) - as he wouldn't, nor had he every seen such a thing in science.  He's come around a bit now, but appears mortified by proxy for his non-brothers in climate "science" - he no longer dismisses my friend's dismissals of AGW alarmism and power-mongering.

There's such a perfect storm of economic, civic, and historical illiteracy, adolescent conformist emotion-based trend-hugging, absurd racial guilt and cost-free spectacular race-baiting, envy, and shameful self-dealing in control of our society and politics today my demoralization (and more so, alienation) is about complete.  But I have to say the whole AGW thing (which incorporates some of the same elements of decline) has been an accelerant in the fire burning down my respect for - and to be honest my interest in - what used to be America.

Whats worse?  The CO2 global warming thing can be shown false easily.

A 'greenhouse' gas works by absorbing IR radiation in certain wavelengths from the sun, and blackbody radiation from the earth... it then passes that energy off to the rest of the atmosphere through conduction and convetion (its not a blanket, which is why the term greenhouse gas is misleading).

Problem is, that CO2 and Water Vapor share most of the same spectrum, and ALL of the IR radiation within those bands is already absorbed... at much LOWER CO2 levels...  so adding CO2 does nothing at this point, to add warming you'd have to add ENERGY.... from either the sun, or the blackbody radiation given off by the earth...

The IR Radiation measurments are out there... and the absorbtion bands have been known for year.... but Calif STILL instituted Cap and Trade last year

/facepalm

67 ALL of the IR radiation within those bands is already absorbed... at much LOWER CO2 levels... so adding CO2 does nothing at this point

Yea, the forcing curve for CO2 is logarithmic, and we've been off to the far right side on that curve for a long time.  You could 5X today's levels and have only the tiniest incremental additional forcing.  IOW - its all bullshit.

There's profound intellectual dishonesty in tricking people into thinking its a linear response.

88 Global temperatures are warmer than at any time in at least 4,000 years, scientists reported Thursday, and over the coming decades are likely to surpass levels not seen on the planet since before the last ice age. In the beginning paragraph they admit the planet was warmer then current temperatures before the last ice age. You know, when Fred Flintstone powered around town on his dinosaur powered SUV. I live in an area that used to be under a block of ice 2,000 feet thick, and current summer temperatures would not melt that sucker. Not in one year, but over the course of tens of thousands, perhaps. It would be more likely if the average temperature of the planet was higher. The temperature of the planet varies for 10,000 interrelated reasons. CO2 is only a tiny slice of a very large pie, and most likely is a 'lagging' indicator. In other words, as the glacier pushed across North America massive amounts of plant material was buried deep underground and the decaying remains is *still* percolating to the surface. Bringing CO2 with it.

89 Bernie Madoff went to jail for his scam.  Yet Al Gore and the rest of the Global Warming gang are still to this day ripping off billions of dollars from people.  People are losing their jobs because of this scam.  We are paying higher energy bills because of this scam.  Our government is wasting our tax dollars because of this scam.  Governments spend time on this issue when real issues need attention.  There must be some powerful people stuffing money off this crime into their bank accounts.  They all need to be thrown under the jail.

Anyone see that Stephen Colbert clip where he looks up and tells the drones that he loves them so he won't be killed?

Well, who the fuck controls the use of the drones?

All you have to do is profess your love of Ogabe to avoid being a target. remember, according to Ogabe political foes are the ENEMY.

Remember also that Big Sis said that Tea Partiers and returning soldiers were terrorists

92 "They all need to be thrown under the jail." We could improve this country by a factor of eleventy. Wouldn't take much. Probably just one cruise ship (with a bad engine) and a mid winter cruise,,, to the North Atlantic.

95 Twice in Earth's history it has been completely covered with ice.  As in no green, no unfrozen areas,  all ice.

If these idiots want to work on something,  how about figuring out how to stop that?

96 Global Warming = More Bikinis

Posted by: typo dynamofo at March 08, 2013 02:26 AM (WVMUQ)

97 The whole problem with AGW theory is that in the past the Earth's atmosphere had much higher levels of CO2 than it does today - and nothing disastrous - from a climatological standpoint - happened.

The long term trend for CO2 is that the amount in the air decreases due to it being trapped in limestone. When the CO2 reaches a low enough level all the plants would die. When the plants die essentially all life on the planet dies with them. I suppose the sulfur dioxide breathing plants they have discovered near some underwater volcanic vents might continue to exist.

In other words - get rid of the CO2 and the planet dies. Our adding of CO2 to the atmosphere has postponed the date at which that no CO2 death sentence for the Earth arrives.

107 I'm always amused when I remind people that 15K years ago, what is now Chicago was under 2.5 miles of ice. They give me the strangest looks. Which makes sense, because "history" for most people starts the day they were born. Love? sex? children? all invented by the youngest generation, and us old goats just had sex to have children. Lust, love, desire? all modern inventions we had nothing do with.

And, ya know, Paul Ehrlich he's such a cool environmentalist who wants to save the planet says there are too many peeps here. Peeple are like parasites ya know AIDS on Mother Earth! Al Goire whos such a wonderfull environmentalist says so and all scientists who ever lived agree! It's a consensus that right wing deniers keep denying. I can't wait for the glaicers when all the little animals will live in perfect harmony as Gaia intended!

Whatever.

Matthew 24:35 - "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."

Just don't tell me that my consciousness or being or essence of existence is doomed to be ripped apart by a black hole and absorbed in the next Singularity.

Hopeful that Jesus will hear my voice and carry me safely & whole to another dimension when that crisis comes around.

111 The Science magazine article that the NYT story is citing is behind a paywall, but the Supplementary Materials, which are just as useful if not more so, are freely available at http://tinyurl.com/a29zwxx It looks like a metastudy of 73 publicly-available datasets of paleoclimatic temperature proxies (ice-cores, plankton, pollen, etc.) They do some statistical Monte-Carlo mumbo-jumbo which I don't understand, resulting in a striking graph on page 10. In the graph it looks like things had cooled off about 0.6C since 7000BP, then very recently and suddenly regained the 0.6C. FWIW.

If all these climate-types keep on plaintively exclaiming one theory, then another, then another, etc.,  can we all collectively hope that one day REAL SOON their heads will simply wrench offa their necks, hit the Holy Gaia's Earth, and we can kick their detached noggins into the closest open drain ?

...and can these acts of attrition close one small circle of life, where  'people recycling' actually sees some benefits ? [as the organic bits get consumed by creatures, great and small]

Amen ,  yaall........

118 Why are mile deep glaciers a good thing?  They would bury the ruins of what is know as Detroit.  I think its the only way we can clean the Earth of this pestilent city is to have it ground into glacial silt to fertilize the fields of Ohio.
