Pope Francis seems liberal on social justice but sadly traditional on sexuality and contraception
Gateway Pundit writes that the pope has been linked to an Anti-Marxist organization. It's called "The Catholic Church."
No but really it's called Comunione e Liberazione.
#RealReporters NYT, Boston Globe, and WaPo All Rush to Promote Pope's Twitter Feed... except it's a parody feed.
Well you can hardly blame them. It's not like every single newsworthy event produces a dozen parody feeds
Erin Burnett Is a Sad Panda Too: Their favorite tactic -- actually, everyone's favorite tactic in politics -- is to claim "If you adopt my politics, you'll become more popular, Serious You Guys."
Erin Burnett to the Pope: Serious You Guys, you need to be liberal.

Obama has a lot in common with the scandals of the Catholic Church.
It seems that no matter if you overspend on a "meeting" in Vegas, or let an ambassador to Libya get himself killed by refusing extra security, members of the Obama Administration keep getting reshuffled from one job to another rather than being actually "let go."
You know .. just like what the bishops used to do with all those pedophile priests.

----
"The first Jesuit pope? Well, yes, in a manner of speaking. Bergoglio is an old-school Jesuit, formed by classic Ignatian spirituality and deeply committed to an intelligent, sophisticated appropriation and proclamation of the full symphony of Catholic truth — qualities not notable for their prevalence among members of the Society of Jesus in the early 21st century. I suspect there were not all that many champagne corks flying last night in those Jesuit residences throughout the world where the Catholic Revolution That Never Was is still regarded as the ecclesiastical holy grail. For the shrewder of the new pope’s Jesuit brothers know full well that that dream was just dealt another severe blow. And they perhaps fear that this pope, knowing the Society of Jesus and its contemporary confusions and corruptions as he does, just might take in hand the reform of the Jesuits that was one of the signal failures of the pontificate of John Paul II."

What the Catholic Church traditionally teaches about social justice is to work personally to help others.
One is a top-down diktat of theft while the other tells people to get out there and help.

I believe it's more of a matter of one's personal ministry (for the cleric involved). If you are familiar with the Jesuit order, you know that these guys do NOT take a vow of poverty, and lots of them live a rather ritzy lifestyle, especially those who have been attached to American Jusuit universities.
So if Pope Francis is living a social ministry, it means essentially, he's living among the poor. Living simply, and practicing what he preaches.

"Does the pope shit in the woods?" We admit to being pleasantly surprised at the number of times this scatological inquiry has been made, not only of us but as if it were an Eternal Mystery.
Gentle Respondent, we can confirm that we have done so in the past while we were still amongst the Worldly. However we are but one Blessed day Invested with the Holy Mitre and we shall hopefully not be so inconvenienced in the future.
Regards and Blessings to you All,

Well there is a superficial similarity between distributionism and redistributionism that would lead and ignorant MSM F*ck to make the error of mistaking one for the other. We'll get to see what His Holiness really thinks at this point. I'll tell you a couple of things that likely will not happen, Distributionism will not become Ex cathedra and therefore not actual cannon beyond reproach. AND You will not see His Holiness side with liberals in American Politics thanks to Obamacare.

Heheh. My senior year of high school they did a city wide high school fake congress thing. My best friend and I sat in on some "committee" where this stupid bubbleheaded chick introduced....I don't even know what it was, a resolution?...that was supposed disapprove/make illegal any form of "compulsory voting." I ask to be recognized and immediately start blowing holes in her little work. I can see her tearing up and I've proven my point, so I sit down, leaving quite a bit unsaid. My best friend immediately asks to be recognized and then she fucking lays out the girl on all the things I didn't say. Girl sits down weeping.

To regressives, social justice is as follows:
"Your race/gender/religion/sexual orientation/fetish culture/etc have spent centuries being oppressed by white male Christian heterosexuals. We will attempt to balance the scales for your years of oppression by making sure that white male Christian heterosexuals pay back to you -- either through money, housing, employment, or some other form of wealth redistribution -- everything they have taken from your race/gender/religion/sexual orientation/fetish culture for centuries. It's time to make them feel your heritage of pain. Let us help you."
Or, to put it more succinctly: "Fuck whitey."

What the Catholic Church traditionally teaches about social justice is to work personally to help others.
So for example, the Godly version of social justice would be running charity hospitals to give basic care to whichever poor you can help, as opposed to government mandated robbery of everyone in order to hand goodies to those who vote the preferred way.

It must have been junior year of high school we did something similar in my US history class. I can't remember all the details, but some of us were supposed to be members of a panel of 19th century individuals -- just average folks, like you'd get at a town meeting -- and the rest of the class were supposed to be other townsfolk. Each of us on the panel (I was one of them) had a character assigned to us; I got to be a teetotaler mother of three. Pretty cool.
I can't remember how the conversation got where it did, but at one point one of the "townsfolk" asked why our girls couldn't wear pants to school like the boys. The others on the panel gave typical answers for their characters -- the politician hedged, the sheriff muttered about law and order, blah, blah -- so when it got to me I was all excited. "They don't wear pants because you can see the V of their legs and its unacceptable."
"But why? If boys can wear pants, why can't the girls?"
"I told you why!"
"But shouldn't girls be able-"
"No, it's OBSCENE!"
The questioner just ended up blinking at me and then sitting down, since my teetotaler mother of three was clearly not goign to change her mind. The teacher gave me a thumbs up and chuckled out a, "Very nice, Melissa."
I like to think I was giving my classmate a crash course in what it's like to talk to a regressive. They'll never listen to you, no matter what you say, so the best you can do is try to get around them and ambush them when they're not paying attention.

My teacher did a "living under a totalitarian regime" practical exercise for two weeks where she was dictator and had a small group of the class watch and report any illicit activities of the rest of the class.
I successfully staged an Operation Valkyrie.
Good humor she had. Not the first revolutionary was I; others had, had various resistance movements in some of the years past. Got a candy bar and an "A" for the unit out of it. For that year though, I was the only one who had the bright idea to resist. Scary.

Since Ratzinger announced his retirement, the only people in my personal network who followed the new pope selection assiduously were the fervent anti-Catholics or anti-religionists.
I don't understand the intense interest from the non Catholics, since most of the world hates us anyway. I said this to BF, he got defensive. Catholics are used to the papal succession thing, one pope dies, another one is elected. It's happened since the time of St. Peter.
The only thing I can conclude is that despite all their (MFM) protestations to the contrary, the Roman Church is still relevant. Otherwise, why all the attention and...concern from commie media?

Best defined by exemplary contrast.
Lawful justice is what will happen when, belatedly, and for a second time, George Zimmerman is allowed release/relief from a murder charge.
If when people first heard about him on the news and they thought he was some Florida Jew like my grandma, a black mob conjured by false reporting and incited by the president (and other white assholes) had murdered him and dragged his crushed Jew corpse around on TV--that would have been social justice, a justice premised on other than the facts of any specific case.
Unmodified capital-j Justice would be if everyone who tried so fucking hard to get Zimmerman murdered and/or railroaded were themselves murdered and/or railroaded. On TV. By people who won't stand for that kind of evil shit.
But Justice is not for this world.

You're right. Many protestant churches have given up on the Bible and instead read from the likes of Galil Gabran or the Communist Manifesto. Unfortunately, many Catholic churches do this also, but not on the scale of the so-called "free will" churches.
If I were to ever return to religion, I think I would become a Catholic. Except I would have go get over the disbelief that I had to have an intermediary (the Pope) to talk to God.

@149Social justice is to justice what military music is to music .
---------------------------------
I heard a story once involving music and a game of 15mm Napoleonic Wargaming (using the Napoleon's Battles rules, for the curious). Both players deployed their army, and the player running the French put an odd collection of figures off on one side of the table.
"That's the military marching band," he explained.
Then, after the game started, he turned some pre-recorded music on. That was the band playing. And he had the band march up along the table edge.
Apparently round about turn two or three, every single Coalition cannon on that side of the table swiveled to face the band, and opened fire.

Ugh. Not again. Yes, that is the way it works in practice.
No, that's not the way the Church means for it to work.
Here's the definition - Catholic Church style: "The virtue that inclines one to co-operate with others in order to help make the institutions of society better serve the common good. While the obligation of social justice falls upon the individual, that person cannot fulfill the obligation alone, but must work in concert with others, through organized bodies, as a member of a group whose purpose is to identify the needs of society, and, by the use of appropriate means, to meet these needs locally, regionally, nationally, and even globally. Implicit in the virtue of social justice is an awareness that the world has entered on a new phase of social existence, with potential for great good or great harm vested in those who control the media and the structures of modern society. Christians, therefore, are expected to respond to the new obligations created by the extraordinary means of promoting the common good not only of small groups but literally of all humanity."
This DOES NOT MEAN "let the government do it." The reason it does NOT mean "let the government do it" is the principle of subsidiarity which requires the problem be addressed at the lowest level capable of handing it.
This concludes today's lesson in Catholic theology.

-----------------------------------------------------
Not really. The issue is that the terms are intentionally confused and twisted by the LIVs' would-be masters. It's kind of like how the most repressive countries in the world all tend to have either the word "People's" or "Democratic" in their names.
The problem is so wide-spread that even TV Tropes has a page entry on the country name thing.
In short, the other side is intentionally confusing things as much as possible by co-opting words and phrases to mean things that the words and phrases have no business describing. Kind of like how the word "gay" meant something completely different back in the '60s.

"Didja hear there's a new pope? Yeah, he's anti-gay marriage."
What the hell do these people think he's going to be?? I mean, he's the friggin' pope!

If I were ever to become a Catholic, I'd want my first confession to be with the Pope. That would be the requirement for the Church to get me.

I know you're not being sarcastic. You're always good with me.
Jesus passed his authority to Peter. He did that for a reason. For a practical reason, someone had to continue to spread the Gospel, and run the Church, and make general decisions about the faith. He did that because we're not angels, we're men. We're imperfect and we need a leader. If we were all angels, we wouldn't have needed the help.
Hell, just look around at ANY human group. Sooner or later a leader emerges, even if its a group of 4-year olds on a Kindergarten playground. If Jesus had not passed on his authority, Christianity would have ceased to exist by about 150 A.D.
If you believe that Christ did things for a reason, then you just need to ask, why did he even bother to PERSONALLY pass on his authority to "bind and loose" to Peter? What was the point?
There's a website (I forget the name) where you can trace the lineage of every single Catholic bishop who ever lived back to Peter.

There are 3 sources of authority in the Church: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium.
The last is the teaching authority of the Pope and all the bishops acting together.
Protestants do the same thing, they just don't call it the same thing.

291I think one thing it took me a while to understand, and is a concept foreign to most Protestant, is the Authority of the Catholic church. If I am not mistaken, the Church authoritatively interprets the Scriptures and as such is sort of(?)/almost on par with the Scriptures. The view of the Church is very different.
------------------------------------
If I understand it correctly, it's pretty similar to the Latter-Day Saint doctrine of "continuing revelation". i.e. the Prophet of the Church, by virtue of the fact that he's the head of the Church and God's spokesperson on Earth, can receive revelation and guidance from the Heavens that provides insight into doctrine, scripture, and the latest passing social mores fads.

Very Different.
In the RC Church we believe that there is no such thing as continuing Revelation. God has said all He needs to say, and all He is going to say.
It's our job to get the interpreation right. And that requires constant effort and that's the reason for the Pope and the Bishops acting in concert.

When did the Bible as we know it now come into existence?
About 300 AD....although it began forming in bits and pieces and fragments around 150 A.D.
Didn't you ever wonder what Christians did before there was an authoritative Bible? They didn't just hang around and wait for Barnes and Noble to get around to it.
THAT'S why there's such a thing as Sacred Tradition in the RC Church. We recognize that gap and how it was filled.

No, Islam believes that the Koran is the literal Word of God.
That's not what we believe.
We believe that the truth is in the Bible, and we may, or may not have uncovered it correctly. That's why there is a lifelong process to try to understand it. You need to read the Bible in all four senses: literally, allegorically, morally and anagogically. Even then, you still might not be getting it right.
The RC Church teaches that, yes, there ARE historical and scientific errors in the Bible.
Try telling a Muslim that about the Koran.

Praying to dead Saints, (The term used loosely, anyone in heaven, even in the Catholic faith is a "saint" there are just some that have been recognized) is an act of humility. God is the only God after all. But when you are asking for stuff, (and that is what praying to saints usually entails, "Please grant me X") it is sort of acknowledgement that your pathetic desires are that of something very small in Gods view. It's more of a "well I don't want to bother the big guy with my little problem, can I get a hearing from you?". As Catholics maintain a vision of the Father in line with the OT, prone to a sort of bad temper when plagued by the complaints of the miniscule. So Saints just provide an outlet for these appeals that is, more appropriate I guess is the best way to say it. Kind of like asking your brother for help because you don't want to bother your dad, because he'd be irate that you bothered him for such a small problem.

Remember when the liberals in the media used to call George W. Bush "uncurious"? Of course it comes out later that he was a big reader of serious books, mostly on history, and would often invite the authors in to have serious discussions, all off the record and out of the sight of cameras. Meanwhile, has anyone ever read a story about what Obama reads? The supposedly "smartest man to ever be President"? I haven't.
The vast majority of reporters are uncurious and uneducated, childish careerists. Their attitude toward the Church's 2,000 year old positions on life, marriage, the family, sexuality, contraception, the priesthood, etc., is essentially that the Church is a "bunch of meanies." Don't they know that the catechism actually has a fully-formed coherent explanation for the Church's positions? You can disagree, but you ought to actually know what it is you're disagreeing with. But none of them show any indication that they've every bothered to do the least research on actual Catholic beliefs. It's about two or three clicks away. But they can't be bothered. The Church should just blithely reject the wisdom of two millennia in exchange for the liberal banalities of a college resident advisors' bull session.

In Islam, as Sean said the Qu'ran is the literal word of Allah. Even though it was not codified until about a century after the Prophet's death and even then its of questionable authenticity since inclusion rested on two or more people hearing the Prophet say such. Not what was written down, but heard. Going further back to the revelations of the writings to the Prophet by Jibriel, Mohammed was in an ecstatic state when he supposedly received these revelations that is wife wrote down. So we have two different ways the Qu'ran was written and codified. But again try to tell a true believing Muslim of those issues, better be ready to duck and run.

One of the big complaints about Catholicism I get is about confession. The "I don't want to have to confess to anyone but God" types. No one is making you, but if something really bothers you, that you carry with you, nothing is better than confession to another human being, whose heart is committed to forgiving you.

352One of my friends asked me a question the other day. Her church on the bulletin has written "a Vatican II church". She asked me if I knew what that meant and why it was there.
Do you sean or mike or anyone else know why a Catholic Church would put that on it's bulletin front?
-----------------------------------------
I'm not Catholic, so I might be off. But my recollection is that while Benedict was Pope, there was a move to allow elements from both pre- and post- Vatican II. I suspect that the notice on the bulletin indicates that the leadership in the church adheres strictly to the changes that came about as a result of Vatican II.
