Obama Administration: ObamaCare Is So Successful We're Going To Make Sure It's Impossible To Measure Just How Awesome It Is
— DrewM

You'd think that with all the victory laps Obama has been doing over hitting his numbers on "sign ups", whatever that means, he'd be eager to have hard data to back up his claims.

Surprisingly, that's actually not the case.

The Census Bureau, the authoritative source of health insurance data for more than three decades, is changing its annual survey so thoroughly that it will be difficult to measure the effects of President ObamaÂ’s health care law in the next report, due this fall, census officials said.

The changes are intended to improve the accuracy of the survey, being conducted this month in interviews with tens of thousands of households around the country. But the new questions are so different that the findings will not be comparable, the officials said.

An internal Census Bureau document said that the new questionnaire included a “total revision to health insurance questions” and, in a test last year, produced lower estimates of the uninsured. Thus, officials said, it will be difficult to say how much of any change is attributable to the Affordable Care Act and how much to the use of a new survey instrument.

So look, you'll just have to trust Obama and people like Ezra Klein when they tell you all is well and ObamaCare is the best thing ever. You have a problem with that?

Related enough...the head of NBC News political coverage knows why ObamaCare is so gosh darn unpopular.

Let's unpack this nonsense for a second.

I like how they pick March as the cutoff deadline for counting pro-ObamaCare ads. It lets him ignore all the money HHS spent promoting it prior to that. In ads. On TV.

It also ignores all the friendly media coverage people like him give it.

But mostly it ignores something very important. The reason candidates, Democratic campaign committees and PACs aren't running pro-ObamaCare ads is that it's unpopular and running on it would be suicide.

If simply buying ads would make the thing a winner for Democrats you can bet they'd be spending tons of money doing just that. They tried using taxpayer money (Happy Tax Day!) and failed.

But chin up Mark. Socialism will be popular someday, it just needs a bigger advertising budget.

I've actually been paying attention and I haven't seen a single anti-ACA ad on the television.

But I do see shitbiscuits on ABC, NBC, and CBS "news" programs uncritically regurgitating Administration claims about Obamacare.

Not sure how that got turned into "ACA opponents have sole control over the airwaves."

The only thing I see is this assnugget forces himself to believe it so he can prosletyze in favor of the ACA and thereby convince himself he's providing "balance" and "equal time."

12 And, of course the media is helping. Obamacare Stories Ignore Taxes, Penalties 88 Percent of the Time But there’s one big tax story the broadcast networks practically ignored this year: the Obamacare taxes that just took effect. The network evening news shows have aired 40 stories or news briefs that mentioned “Obamacare” or the “Affordable Care Act” between Jan. 1, 2014, and April 13, 2014. But 87.5 percent (35 of 40) of those ignored the taxes associated with the legislation by failing to mention any taxes or penalties related to Obamacare. 126 Speaking of ads, I saw a Covered California ad last night that had nothing to do with signing up. It was an ad telling people to talk to their little children, because that will help them develop. Who doesn't know that?? And why is our money being spent on that??

Once you look at the ad you will know why. I wish I could find it on line, but it has various parents of various ethnicities talking happily to their children.  All parents except one were good, involved parents except one: the white woman. She was ignoring her crying baby for her smart phone. All the minority parents and the white male were good. White woman, bad.

The Social Security Administration announced Monday that it will immediately cease efforts to collect on taxpayersÂ’ debts to the government that are more than 10 years old.

The action comes after The Washington Post reported that the government was seizing state and federal tax refunds that were on their way to about 400,000 Americans who had relatives who owed money to Social Security. In many cases, the people whose refunds were intercepted had never heard of any debt, and the debts dated as far back as the middle of the past century. . . .

Got  billed $2700 for anesthesiology for my  teen son's eye surgery.  Challenged it and kept asking   (nicely)  for a corrected  amount.

As in, "I'm not paying for both a DR  and a Nurse/Student at the same rate."  Then reqested a discount for being self-pay  and not a big pockets insurance company.

Adjusted/corrected bill was $850.

Self-pay    FTW.

The "beauty" of the current system is that those who are connected can abuse the system to  pay little to no tax.

A simple system like a flat tax or a national sales tax would make that impossible.

The fairest system would be to compute the budget and the # of citizens divide the former by the latter and send everyone a bill.

It is beyond odd that fair is now defined as not only charging people different amounts, but flat out different rates.

It would be as if Comcast didn't charge everyone $120/mo (or whatever), but instead gave one guy who was friends with someone at Comcast $60/mo, charged some random guy $120, and then for some pure schmuck that the Comcast CEO didn't like charged him $1M/mo.

And this...is fair?

208 You know what my healthcare cost me in the past year? $175. Total. Got an eye infection. - Went to the doctor- $100 - Bought prescription- $75 If I had Obamacare, the same treatment would have cost me over $3600 in premiums plus $175 since it was under the deductible. Next year it will cost me 1% of my total income. (side note: another compelling reason to go Galt. Can't tax what I don't earn) I understand that I am fortunate to be healthy and don't have to take thousands of dollars in medication and don't need hundreds of thousands in medical treatments. You know who else doesn't need thousands in medication and hundreds of thousands in medical treatments? Illegal aliens, people going to the doctor for stubbed toes and sniffles, people who want birth control, people who are curious about their blood pressure... Insurance IS NOT and SHOULD NEVER BE welfare. It should cover catastrophic illness only. Otherwise, pay your damn bill. Guess what? When people stop deciding to go to the doctor because they stubbed their toe, demand AND PRICES go down. The reason healthcare costs have and will continue to skyrocket is BECAUSE of "insurance", not in spite of it.

"always thought the census was some kind of estimate -- they poll maybe 5% or 10% of the people and guesstimate the rest. Is this not the case"

The 10-year census attempts to contact everyone via mail and other means. Most people just give names and ages etc. A small portion (maybe 5%) get a longer form with more detailed questions.

in addition, the census bureau does periodic detailed samples of people in what is called the American Community Survey.

In fact, we not having any dependents, we're likely paying more in taxes proportionally. (Not that tax payments = value.) But we don't get no love in the media. Only the oh-so-hardworking single mom (who for all we know is not absolutely certain who the fathers of her offspring are). In generally, I agree with what you said prior to what I quoted. That said, unless we're talking about rape, NO ONE is pregnant through no fault of their own. Even then, there are plenty of people who would give everything they own to adopt a child that someone else did not want and/or cannot afford. There is absolutely no reason on earth that we should be subsidizing people's children. You know what birth control is free and 100% effective? Don't have sex. Following objections by Bill Clinton, a warning letter from 35 Republican senators, and critical congressional hearings, the administration now says the change won't happen for years, if ever. "We can extend the contract for up to four years," Assistant Commerce Secretary Lawrence Strickling told Congress last week, referring to the agreement under which the U.S. retains ultimate control over the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, known as Icann. I tell her "First off, I'll be the judge of what's "OK."  Second, if you're asking me to do something, you're soliciting.  Didn't they teach basic vocabulary in whatever bumblefuck junior college that has the misfortune of claiming you as an alum?"

That would only happen on the tax on incomes derived from property, such as rents and dividends.  Income taxes on things like wages would be unaffected, since the SCOTUS ruled that those taxes are not direct taxes and thus have no apportionment requirement.  Pollock v Farmers' Loan and Trust co.

340 Hmmm, I wonder if this happened to us? Canada Police Asked Tax Agency to Delay Word of Heartbleed Breach The announcement Tuesday by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police indicates investigators feared that early disclosure would have jeopardized their probe into the theft of about 900 social insurance numbers—akin to U.S. Social Security numbers—from the Canada Revenue Agency's systems. ... Most Canadians now file their taxes online. Last year, 20 million out of a total 26.1 million taxpayers filed their returns electronically, up 17% from 2012, while the number who filed paper returns plunged 29.5%, according to CRA figures. great

344 The Federal government tried to implement an income tax several times between the 1870s and 1910s. Each time it was challenged in court and thrown out as unconstitutional. The 16th Amendment was passed specifically because it was the only way to make a national income tax legal.

By what logic is a tax on my income *NOT* a "direct or capitation" tax?

------

Because "direct tax" in the Constitutional sense is not a tax directly levied on a person.

For background, check out Madison's Notes of Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787.  Also useful is to understand that under the Articles of Confederation, the States were required to supply the centeral government with its money, and yet each state only had one vote in the Confederation...This meant that larger states had to contribute more but were outvoted by smaller states as to how to spend it.

Further, the Federalist Papers are replete with references to "direct tax" being a tax on wealth, eg Federalist #12 and #21.  Briefly, "direct tax" is and always was meant to reference a tax on wealth (eg land) and capitation/poll taxes.

The income tax is not either of those.  It is a tax on the transaction, eg you do something and you get money for it.  It is not a tax on the money itself, ergo it is not a direct tax.  Even the Pollock decision got it wrong by saying a tax on the income derived from property is the same as a tax on the property itself, being that the Court studiously ignored precedent to get to that conclusion.

And for backup, I would like to reference Hylton v. United States, a case heard by the SCOTUS in 1796 where someone was contesting a federal tax levied against someone.  The contention was that it was a "direct" tax.  Justice Chase wrote:

"I am inclined to think, but of this I do not give a judicial opinion, that the direct taxes contemplated by the Constitution, are only two, to wit, a capitation, or poll tax, simply, without regard to property, profession, or any other circumstance; and a tax on LAND. I doubt whether a tax, by a general assessment of personal property, within the United States, is included within the term direct tax.”

Further, Justice Paterson wrote:

"Whether direct taxes, in the sense of the Constitution, comprehend any other tax than a capitation tax, and tax on land, is a questionable point. ... I never entertained a doubt, that the principal, I will not say, the only, objects, that the framers of the Constitution contemplated as falling within the rule of apportionment, were a capitation tax and a tax on land."

And since Paterson was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention I'm inclined to take his word as to what "direct tax" means over someone like Neal Boortz.

Simply put, since the 16A was put in place to remedy a stupid decision by the Fuller SCOTUS, removing it would put the state of affairs back to Pollock - namely that the Feds can tax wage income without apportionment, but must come up with some goofball mechanism to apportion taxes on rents, interest, and dividends.

The Federal government tried to implement an income tax several times between the 1870s and 1910s. Each time it was challenged in court and thrown out as unconstitutional. The 16th Amendment was passed specifically because it was the only way to make a national income tax legal.

---------

Also incorrect.

For instance, the income tax existed pre-Pollock.  The Pollock decision did not rule the income tax illegal, only the parts of it that taxed income derived from property.  It did not hold that the remainder of the income tax was unconstitutional, only that it could not be severed from the overall tax law  without the burden being shifted unduly and unfairly to "professions, trades, employments, or vocations" and therefore the law had to be changed.

Oh, and prior to that the Springer v United States decision upheld the income tax.  That was in 1880, btw.

364 As for the change of questionairre: Remember when they changed how to calculate GDP last year which raised the new number by 2% or more comparatively. Posted by: Guy Mohawk at April 15, 2014 12:14 PM (hUf/y) ------------------------------------- Same as SAT scores have been declining EVERY year since DOE was established in 1980. How to correct the problem? Simple, actually....Just change the way you GRADE the exam. (Until this year, the # of wrong answers were subtracted from the # right to prevent 'guessing') Under the new grading system, you're credited only with the # of right answers. (And these FOOLS will convince themselves 'education is improving...Look at the scores!)

365 Easy start of reform. Require all government transfer payments to send a 1099 at the end of the year. Next year, restrict all 1099 transfer payments to the median income. Above the median income be sent back on April 15. Hits everyone from urban poor to farmers. Sit back an watch folks argue that they personally should take more from their fellow citizens than the median income.
