Obama Graduation Address at Ohio State: Damn, I Love Government
— Ace

Apologies for lifting the "Damn,..." joke from Hot Air.

The era of Big Government is wonderful.

: Unfortunately, you've grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that's at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They'll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can't be trusted.

We have never been a people who place all our faith in government to solve our problems. We shouldn't want to. But we don't think the government is the source of all our problems, either. Because we understand that this democracy is ours. And as citizens, we understand that it's not about what America can do for us, it's about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but absolutely necessary work of self-government. And class of 2013, you have to be involved in that process.

I seem to remember a lot of concern expressed by the Founders who gave ups this "unique experiment in self-rule" about the omnipresent threat of tyranny and a government that rules a people rather than the other way 'round.

It should be noted that the government isn't much in the business anymore of acting as a collective pool for national accomplishment. By which I mean: Going to the Moon is obviously something none of us could have achieved ourselves, but we authorized the government, with our dollars, to make that happen.

Obama talks in vague terms which seem to suggest such matters but his chief concern is using government as a catspaw by which to extract money from Citizen A and give those dollars (minus the bureaucrats' vig) to Citizen B.

But no president before Choom Boy has made government something to be feared. Yes, we've had crooks, grifters and layabouts, but President Historic First© has taken executive power several frightening steps forward.

His goal is to change a constitutional republic into a third-world shithole in which the favored few reap the benefits and the rest suffer. He is a mean-spirited, racist thug worthy of inclusion with the likes of Idi Amin, the Kim family, Papa and Baby Doc.

What we can all hope for is that the voters will finally get tired of socialism after 8 years of his shit.

But they won't Vic.  See, the problem here is that socialism sounds good, and (for those it benefits) it's way better than any alternative- at least in the short term.

But it's not just the makers vs. the takers.  You've got a huge number of people who are *technically* makers, but don't really see the world in those terms.  Those people like to think of themselves as "level headed" and "moderate."  Mostly they're just asleep at the switch- but they'll never admit that.

To them, people pointing out the evils and ills of socialsm sound shrill.  This is especially the case when, a few years into it, the Socialists can say (smugly), "See?  We still have money.  If they were right, we'd already be out of money by now.  We can keep this going forever."

And so the takers actively like socialism, and much of the middle can't be roused to fight it.

DOOM.

As the weakly protected U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, came under attack the night of Sept. 11, 2012, the deputy head of the embassy in Tripoli sought in vain to get the Pentagon to scramble fighter jets over the Libyan coastal city in a show of force that might have averted a second attack on a nearby CIA complex.

Hours later, according to excerpts of the account by the U.S. diplomat, Gregory Hicks, American officials in the Libyan capital sought permission to deploy four U.S. special operations soldiers to Benghazi aboard a Libyan military aircraft early the next morning. They were told to stand down.

Hicks, a veteran foreign service officer who is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday, told congressional staffers that he and others in Libya thought that flying U.S. military jets over Benghazi during the early hours of the attack could have had a deterrent effect.

Never thought I'd say it, but Woody Wilson comes off as Ike when compared to FDR, who in turn is like, oh, Gerald Ford when stacked up against the Chicago Jesus.

All of the previous presidents (even Bubba Clinton) are to Bark Obama as Tepid Air's Poppin' Fresh is to Vito Corleone. Just no comparison.

It should be noted that two of the government 'sucesses' that he mentioned are Teach for America, and the Peace Corps. He did mention veterans, neglecting to mention that Defense is specified as a Constitutional imperative. Curiously absent was any mention of Head Start, Americorps(e), or Dept. of Energy loans

Or any mention of the Tuskegee experiment, or the internment of the Nisei. Must've slipped his mind.

Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They'll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. "Glitz, glamor, and all those things we use every day" you mean.  Going to the moon was psychologically valuable (and don't turn up your nose at that), and it also had a lot of ancillary benefits we might never have realized except for the moon missions.  And, yes, the private sector is doing it *now* but they weren't doing it then.

And, if you believe in space colonization (which I think would be cool, quite frankly), the moon has a lot of benefit- as a stepping stone to further out in the solar system if nothing else.

And I'll take it further: if you gave private companies some interest in the moon (mineral rights, for instance), or the same for the astroid belt, I bet we'd have a fully functioning moon-base in the next decade or so.

He ain't gonna have no choice.  Michelle will burn through their $10M net worth in a couple of years of living large.

His $400k/yr retirement ain't gonna cut it.  This is not a guy who knows how to live within his means.

He'll be doing $20k speaking gigs round the clock to maintain her spending habits.

All politicians use strawmen arguments at some point.  But I've never seen a president do  it so often as this man.

you've grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that's at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They'll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner.

That's a real healthy understanding and respect for roughly half of the electorate, jackass.

281 Althouse pointed out before that Obama's view is that: "Government is not to be regarded as in need of limits, because the government is us. Anything we — the government — want to do is never tyranny, but freedom." Obama sees the government as simply the collective will of the people working together, and that the government is the people; the government can’t be tyrannical because the people would never tyrannize themselves. This is the ultimate collectivist view: There is no separation between society and state; one blends softly, casually into the other until they are concomitant with each other. More on his speech here: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2180 More on his wider totalitarian view of the unity of society and state here: http://politicalhat.com/?p=1905

This is a cycle that needs to be broken and they only way that can be achieved is a by creating a permanent progressive majority.

361 About moon/mars bases. I suffer from insomnia. But I have hours of science programs DVR'd. So this one I'm watching last night is cool. NASA has a satellite already 'up there' which is looking at potential future planets. It can't use actual light, because the light from the star will obscure the planets. So they use IR or something -- which also gives an indication of the temperature of the planet. They are looking close -- but 64 light years at this time is pretty formidable a challenge -- but anyway they're discovering something like one new planet per week. The 'money' quote was from some astrophysicist sorta almost babe who said, 'We're looking for heaven and all we've found is hell'. In other words bad news, very bad news. Hot, hot, stinking boiling hot planets intolerably close to the star they orbit. We (our Goldilocks planet) are very much the exception in the universe so far.

Collecting the tax involves interaction with 1500+ taxing authorities and Amazon sells software to businesses that facilitates this.

380 NFL Official: Gay NBA Player A “Role Model” Who Is “Redefining Masculinity”… In an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Domonique Foxworth, president of the National Football League Players Association and former cornerback with the Baltimore Ravens, said NFL star Jason Collins’ announcement last week that he is a gay will make him a role model. “So not only is Jason going to be a great role model for young athletes who are gay,” Foxworth said. “These overall role models, kind of the epitome of masculinity in our society, are our athletes. “And they – people trump up their masculinity because they’re so strong and so fast and so tough,” Foxworth said. “But that physical strength is nothing in comparison to the level of strength that they show when they stand up for an oppressed minority, or they stand and they make a stand when someone says something that’s offensive, and I think that’s, setting that example is starting to change. “And I’ve been so proud to be a part of this segment of athletic history because we are taking this on and we are redefining masculinity and showing a new dimension of masculinity that I’m so proud to be a part of,” Foxworth said. 400 Government money is addictive. It's a drug more potent than heroin. It hooks itself into your mind, corrupts you, turns your best impulses against you, and builds a false reality around you. It eventually becomes a prison that you can never escape, one that you will even fight to maintain, because you will not see the bars. This country is doomed. When a President can say this sort of thing openly, praising government, and decrying anyone who dares to impede him, and not instantly turn his audience into an angry mob, but be cheered by thousands of people already in the thrall of government addiction, there's no way out. Not through elections, anyway.

Well..., if *were* an over-pressure, then the valve (IF it is the valve that is leaking) would just vent, making for water in a place where it might not be convenient. If you have a water pressure regulator in your system (likely, if you are on city water) then it may be that the regulator is failing and creating a pesky-but-not dangerous problem. Any how, it's best to figure out what is going on.

429 But don' you think that it might occur to him that nobody is taking a poll asking. "Do you support the violent overthrow of our government", if people were we would hear about if from homeland security, that people woudn't answer a poll that way, much less 45% and that had Paul, Cruz and Bachmann said any such thing they would be brough up on charges of treason. This is not rocket science.

430 374 Can someone tell me, in one sentence, why Amazon supports the online sales tax? In addition, part of their business model is as a site for other retailers to use to sell stuff. So smallstartup.com and smallcraft.com and smallmanufacturer.com all sell through amazon. The more complicated the tax compliance issues, the more reason to sell through amazon, and the higher their cut will be. They see online sales as the future, and are more worried about competition from other online stores than brick and mortar anyway.

431 "Uhhh, yup, yup, Thanks for calling. I do support the violent overthrow of the government, Yup, Yup and I guess you have my phone number, but if not it's _________ and I live at____________" Glad to help you in your poll." This is Bob Smith speaking. LW loonbats.

434 I think somebody like Howard Hughes COULD have gone to the Moon, except if he set up a rocket base in Florida, the zoning board would take it away from him; he couldn't buy enough insurance; he'd have been prosecuted after the first fatal fire; and if he were ordered not to make money harvesting anything up there, I doubt he'd have bothered. Apart from that, it should be remembered that modern rocketry was born as a civilian hobby and became a government enterprise when artillery geeks got hold of it.

436 Who the fuck does he think he is?  God save us from this self-important, unintelligent, nattering popinjay.

Sorry for the Dr. Smith talk at the end there.  I really don't think this level of hate I have for the JEF is healthy, but how can he have snowed so many people?  Even with the MFM covering for him, are people really so blind to their own situations?  To those of friends, co-workers, and families?

Maybe the producers of 'The Bible' knew exactly what they were doing casting Old Scratch ...

437 Remember when we sent our children to college to teach them how to think? Yeah, me neither.

438 I gotta disagree that we authorized the government to go to the moon. The government decided we were going to the moon, because it was in a pissing contest with another government. Once our government clearly won, and ran the requisite victory laps, it quit. Last moon mission? 1972. Most morons here weren't born yet. I remember it as if it were yesterday, the thrill of it, the limitless potential it decried, the excitement of where we might be by 2012: A Space Odyssey. Nope. We. Just. Quit.

"Unfortunately, you've grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that's at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They'll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can't be trusted."

This should be labelled, early and often, as Obama's "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain" speech.
