— Ace Autocratic for the people.
From @benk84's linkdump:
In his remarks Tuesday, Obama issued a stern forewarning on the upcoming debates, and reiterated that he will not negotiate with Republicans over the debt ceiling."As I've demonstrated throughout the past several weeks, I am very open to compromise," he said. "But we cannot simply cut our way to prosperity."
"While I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay the bills they have already racked up," Obama said. "We can not not pay bills that we have already incurred."
He's very open to compromise, but will not consider things he refuses to consider.
And:
Immediately following the remarks, Obama left the White House to return to Hawaii, where his family is still on vacation.
Well he's certainly earned it.

It's not just an observation. It's a law of nature. It's Obama's Law -- Whatever Obama says, the exact opposite is true.
From this we can conclude: "We can simply cut our way to prosperity.

They play for yards and we play for inches. Expect that particular argument to be made ad nauseam by the whole Progressive crew (yes that includes the MFM) right up until the vote.
Oh, and expect the ceiling to be thrown in with extending the budget 'continuing resolution', due to expire at the end of March. This is the fantasy budget that Dingy Reid refers to as 'we did pass a budget'.

I think the thing that the Founders would find most disappointing and offensive is the devolution of the press into a propaganda arm for one political party. They envisioned a strong free press fearlessly reporting the truth and debating big ideas. We now have a press that massages and manages the news and breathlessly reports the antics of Lohan and the Kardashians to distract everyone from the big problems.

NYE they had Ari Velshi screaming that the Debt Ceiling was antiquated. I understand the philosophical point of tying it to legislation (i.e. if you're going to pass a bill that raises the debt by X amount that bill automatically raises the debt ceiling.)
I think you could make the argument that it should be that way (so we have to actually fight about the spending, not this nebulous debt ceiling. Maybe people would take it seriously then.)
But then Velshi went off the rails saying "the US can't default, we'll just print more money!" (Yes, he said it, basically like that.)

How can anyone here disagree with him? He has the Speaker of the House, Baby Wetsalot, by the balls. Boehner and Mitchell have given him everything he asked for.
Remember: THEY came to him with the bill to sign. THEY came to him saying "here, we want to spend this money."
So how is he wrong? They said "we want to borrow $3.9T in debt." All he's asking them to do is pave the way.

"Mandatory" (entitlement) spending is roughly 2/3 of the budget. Discretionary spending is about 1/3.
The annual budget (to the extent one exists) is about $3 trillion. You'd need to cut approximately 100% of the discretionary budget to reach a balanced budget given the amount of tax revenue being collected.
This is why entitlement reform- the least popular form of spending cut- is so necessary. Discretionary cuts only delay the inevitable.

I disagree on your first points (if they could've envisioned an electorate giving any attention to Lohan and Kardashian it would've been an early Jonestown); the press at the time was mainly a bunch of pamphlets by anybody able to get their mitts on a small printing device. They were a bunch of scandal sheets that would print extremely biased shit with only an occasional regard for objectivity. That's why they never added a "shield law" which the MFM has been lusting for like Slick around young cooter; they knew that the press could be a bunch of turds that would sell the country out for a hit of blow.

The Left's counter-rhetoric will be that the GOP has poisoned the well on the value of government programs and people don't want to pay taxes only because they don't understand the value of what they get for that money.
To which the reasonable response should be "Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer, if you would rather pay an extra $2,000 more in taxes this year than take your kids on vacation this summer, vote for the Democrats so they can take that $2,000 and spend it in the ways they choose". At some point, it really does become a choice between having all of the money you make automatically earmarked for spending in ways the bureaucrats in DC want or making your own decisions on what you want to spend the fruits of your labor on. It doesn't really get much more complex than that.

Either the president is engaging in empty sloganeering, or he is a very sloppy thinker.
1) The first two sentences are about fairness. But what is fair? The president is obviously referring to his own prescriptions for fairness.
2) The last two sentences assert that what is most fair in the president's judgment will also be the very thing that makes the economy grow the most.
But why would that be? First of all, even if the president were right about what is truly fair, why would it logically follow that this would necessarily be the best thing for the economy? He offers no proof, and I don't believe he ever has, or ever will, or ever could.
So, does the president speak so dull-wittingly because he believes we are dull-witted, or because he in fact is such a shallow thinker?
Or is there a third option?

This is a reference to a lefty lie they've been pushing for a while now. Expect to see more of it soon.
Democrats are trying to portray the debt limit not as a limit on debt, but as a limit on the amount of debt obligations that that can be repaid. They want people to believe that increasing the debt limit is merely authorization to pay off debt already incurred.
They do this by assuming that unspent but budgeted money is effectively spent- that it represents debt incurred already, even if not yet spent.

Cutting spending is necessary, just not sufficient.
Its apparently also not particularly "easy" since nobody seems to be able to get it done.

It's a good time to be in debt and a bad time to be a saver.
So on the balance, I guess I'm doing OK. (I've got my emergency fund, but also a new mortgage and my student loan debt.)
When Hyperinflation sets in, as long as I can keep my income roughly at inflation (that's the hard part I suppose.) I should be able to pay off my mortgage early (assuming things rise roughly equally on average the only thing that won't go up in my mortgage cost.)
The wife and I sat down on NYE to discuss having children. (Anonymous Internet moron friends, keep you mouths shut, we didn't tell anyone our plans.) There were 99 economical reasons to keep putting it off, but we settled on "You know what, playing the game conservatively (watching our budget, not having credit cards until the age of 25 and paying them down every month, saving 10% of income/month or so) has gotten us nothing but heartburn. While people who flaunt the system (giant ass mortgages) are getting ahead.
So fuck the economic analysis. Let's jump in feet first and just swim our way out on this one.

When this is your best argument, you've lost the debate, at least among rational people.
Most of the unfunded debt is either linked to inflation (SS payments) or tied to fee-for-service (Medicare and Medicaid), so "printing more money" does nothing with regard to the bulk of the debt. You think doctors are going to let themselves be paid in dollars that lose value by the minute? No, they'll stop taking Medicare and Medicaid patients.
Not only that, but even for the parts of the debt that can be inflated away to some extent, you can only do that once. Even then, most of that debt is held by US citizens, although the proportion of foreign holdings is growing, so that you are screwing your own citizens for what purpose? What happens after you communicate that intention to the market and then can't borrow on favorable terms for a generation? Are the people in DC suddenly going to get fiscal responsibility religion then?

Fine let's go with the "Obama Care Fees" (and make no mistake the increased fees on things like Medical devices might as well be a tax.)
Posted by: tsrblke (work) at January 02, 2013 08:31 AM (4F5x1)
If you wait for the 'perfect' time to have kids, then you don't have kids, plus it doesn't get easier to have them as you get older.
Don't make that mistake. People a lot poorer and less responsible than yourself managed to do OK with kids.

Then he figured out that it was a sticking point, and that he could just demagogue it to death like he has done so many other times on so many things.
The thing is, will the GOP wilt again in the face of negative press and the constant harping (including a big dose in the SOTU address)?
Sadly, I think I know the answer to this one too.

To the left, the fact that some people make much more money than others isn't "fair". You see, they only got rich by being lucky, through the benevolence of the federal government, and exploitation.
They didn't build that, you know.
They view wealth and income as a piece of a finite pie. If the wealthy had less, there would be more wealth an income available for the poor. It's and absurd, economically illiterate worldview, yet it's one of their core principles.

Fine. But don't mix up these taxes with income taxes related to paychecks. The average person has no clue about the medical device tax. Telling him your taxes are going up because the MRI machine now has a $80K tax on it, means nothing to him.
This is what the right always does. We talk about shit that the low info voter has no idea about and worse, muddy the waters. You tell him, Obama raised your taxes for Obamacare. Then he gets his paycheck and it's teh same as always and he thinks, WTF are these Republicans talking about, there are no tax increases.

This is the problem though. The new way to increase taxes is to hide them in corporate taxes and "the rich." Thus masking the cost from the average Joe Blow.
(Also there was IIRC an "investment tax" in Obama Care, I'm not sure how that will play out with 401Ks (and similar plans.)
But that might effect Joe Blow.

In fairness one of my wife's Phobias is ever having even the slightest financial problem. It's hard to explain, it really is.
I had trouble getting her to take a 0% financing offer on a new couch (which she wanted, at lots of money.) because she was afraid we'd lose our jobs and not be able to pay it off. Which was strange to me, because she wanted to pay it out of savings, so clearly even if we lost our jobs (over the 4 month course of payments BTW) we could have paid it off (because the money was there.)
When it comes to "same as cash" I'm a bigger fan of taking that offer, keeping my money and then dispensing it in smaller chunks.
So yeah, the thought of doing something where potential cost equals ???? scares the ever loving shit out of her.
Sometimes I think her thought process is that if we make sure to save enough money, and never do anything that ever puts the budget in any sort of tension, there were never be any money fights (which is strange, because all it does is shift the money fights up one level.)

Again, only applicable to $250K+. Joe Blow won't feel shit. Which is why all these "GET READY FOR THE OBAMACARE TAXES" type stuff doesn't do anything to move the needle for Joe Blow Shmoe. It doesn't affect it at all directly.
Indirectly, sure it does affect him. Good luck explaining to him though. They did Obamacare very smartly. Lots of pain, but all hidden pain that nobody can actually point to specifically and say, damn it O-care is costing me money.

Since no one in the MSM will state the truth that this tax increase without any spending cuts does nothing to reduce the deficit and ever-growing debt, it's up to us to talk this up. (How does Obama even say this is balanced with a straight face?)
Does Boehner/the RNC even have a press office? Putting out talking points on the tax hike and the sandy relief bill that is loaded up with lard should be easy, but I hear NOTHING from our side, other than on some blogs.

The debate is not about bills they have already racked up. That has already been done and will not be paid for this generation.
The debate is about CONTINUING to rack up bills that we can't pay for.
