Obama Loses Majority Support with Important Swing Demographic, White Women

First he lost young voters, now white women. Over Obamacare.

Polling provided to National Journal by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that white women have soured considerably on the law, especially in the month since its botched rollout. The skepticism runs especially deep among blue-collar women....

The Kaiser poll, which has been conducted monthly since ObamacareÂ’s inception, shows the law has never been a big hit with white women. But this groupÂ’s opinions took a sharply negative turn in the November results.

According to Kaiser, 40 percent of college-educated white women hold a “very unfavorable” view of the law—10 points higher than a month ago. An additional 10 percent view the law “somewhat unfavorably.” A month ago, those two groups together totaled just 42 percent.

ThatÂ’s not damning in and of itself, but this is the one slice of the white electorate where Democrats usually perform well. President Obama won 46 percent of the group in 2012, and even that was an underwhelming showing compared with recent Democratic presidential candidates.

And that’s not all. Democrats should be far more worried about white women who do not have a higher education. The numbers are astounding: In the latest Kaiser poll, 50 percent have a “very unfavorable” view of the law—9 points higher than in October. An additional 13 percent view it “somewhat unfavorably.” Indeed, antipathy among blue-collar white women runs even deeper than the most conservative white demographic group, blue-collar white men (59 percent of whom hold an unfavorable view, Kaiser found).

Remarkably, only 16 percent of blue-collar white women have a favorable view of Obamacare. They disapprove of it by a 4-1 ratio.

Democrats typically do not win the white women vote, but they do fairly well, picking up somewhere between, say, 40-45% of that large section of the vote. They lose white women, but narrowly enough that minority women (strongly Democratic) push the whole of the women's vote to the Democrats.

Because white women make up such a large fraction of the voting population, a few percentage points shifted from Democrats to Republicans will have an impact at the ballot box.

Maybe pro-Obamacare Happy Hours will do the trick.

My thinking goes that women like security and prefer the party that delivers security.  The Democrats deliver security in the form of social safety nets, so women prefer Democrats.  The Democrats were promising to remove the insecurity surrounding health insurance and they were thinking that this would make them even more popular with women.

 

Problem:  The Democrats hired Barack Obama to do this and he hired his wife's college cronies.

 

Problem:  They screwed this up so badly even the MSM couldn't really cover for them.

 

Problem:  By   screwing this up so badly they created even more insecurity surrounding health insurance, which was what they wanted to avoid and is driving women away from the Democrats.

 

Problem:  I have been having the giggle-fits everytime I think about this.  No wait - that isn't a problem - for me.

I'll case study myself.  White woman?  Check.  Loved my ob/gyn of 20+ years? Check.  Well, she took an early retirement because of this oncoming freight train. 

This has very deep and far reaching consequences that I've always felt will leave the Dems quivering in their Bruno Magli loafers.  We are losing our preferred doctors, we are worried about the healthcare our families are going to receive as resources dry up like a tumbleweed blowing through a Clint Eastwood film and...we are going to be losing a very substantial chunk of our discretionary money to pay for what's akin to a new car payment without the new car that never gets paid off. 

There's going to be a whole lot of pissed off going on between now and a year from now.

His problem is that he treats large groups the way he treats small ones.

When you're a   ::: cough :::   "community organizer" you work among people in relatively small groups.  People who feel crapped on by life in general, so there's always this built in lack of trust to anyone who's trying to "help."

Obama was probably a raging success at quickly building rapport by tossing off some "preaching to the choir" type of jokes or comments to gain trust.

But that doesn't extrapolate to all groups everywhere.  What you'd say in confidence to a group that you already KNOW thinks like you is not what you should be saying to larger and more (dare I use the word?) diverse groups.

In short, TFG is a one trick pony. 

He's not smart.  He's practiced.

The average person will be bankrupt either way.

222 LIV voters were fine with spending other peoples' money on health care.  It was a cheap way to express their virtue.  However, what the Dems actually did by redistributing healthcare is create a lot of losers.  Furthermore, the process of buying insurers and hospitals off further constrains their moves henceforth. 

What you are seeing is the rebellion of the losers because Obama promised them they would all be winners with no downsides.  Both youths and white women now are reflecting their view that they are losers.  White working class are losing secure health care, youths are getting screwed on rates.  Asians and Hispanics will be the next group to move when they realize no coverage for illegals and working class losing their existing health care.  Last to move will be Blacks, especially Black women who have been statistically the strongest supporters of Barack Obama.

Kicker: because doctors are poor businessmen and are not legally able to organize, their contracts with insurers bind them to whatever. I cannot believe this. All the gifting is tax free, so a regular income would be well over 100K. She'd have a heart attack if she knew of the no-interest mortgage loan (that never needs to be paid back) and some of the other things.

If you read the fine print, you'll find that anyone who wants a subsidy needs to sign up for the Silver plan. They can't take the lesser Bronze or upgrade to the Gold. However, if you get the subsidy and sign up for the Silver, you automatically get the deductibles and max out of pocket as the Gold plans. I didn't write the law so I don't know why, but that's what it says.

I have a PPO where I pay co-pays for everything, I don't have a "deductible" of a certain dollar amount.  If you have to pay a $2,000 deductible before coverage what does the co-pay thing even mean? 

Does it mean that after spending $2,000 on doctor visits you get to pay $10 co-pay after that, or does it mean, if there's a co-pay listed for the item then it's exempt from the deductible?  I'm confused.

You can claim people are going to have a lower premium all you want, but they are going to have to pay for EVERYTHING until they hit their deductibles in most of the plans. Then they are still going to pay 40%. For a 100,000$ hospital bill they are paying close to half of that with the deductible, coinsurance, hospital copay, etc. You may as well not have insurance. The average person will be bankrupt either way. I had a heart attack a year ago and it racked up a $72,000 bill in two days. A 20% co-pay would be over $14,000 on that.

398 The exchanges were not designed to entice those with employer coverage into getting subsidized, although when you read into how they were designed, they are an attempt to beat the employer into providing a minimum of coverage if they were an oddball provider that didn't have coverage that made the 60% threshold. It's the rare insurance policy that was that low. And of course now, they have to offer all these diamond deals of no cost preventative care, no limits, no preexisting conditions. So either an employer is going to dump all their employees onto the exchanges and pay the fine, or they are going to up the policy and pass as much cost onto the employee as they can without reaching over the 9.5% threshold. However, this is exactly why it is predicted that most employers will be dropping health insurance and simply paying the fines(which they can probably write off since they are a "tax"). Simply charge the employee more than the 9.5% to cover premiums and they will either go to the exchanges or go private. Or if they stay with the company plan, the employer will avoid the tax penalty and get a fairly high percentage of the premium paid.
