35 This is pretty much what I counseled in the aftermath of the election, when people were looking around for high windows to jump from. To wait and see what transpired next.

Consider this while we speak of ratings: at last year's Democratic convention, who got the highest ratings? Not Obama. Bill Clinton did.

Clinton promised America's low information voters that if they were patient, and waited a little bit longer, a few more months, then Obama would have the economy just as broadly prosperous as it was in the late 1990s when Clinton was in office.

Total bullshit, of course. But the LIVs bought it.

Once they realize that they were played? That the magic Clinton economy is not in fact coming back this year, or the next, or the next? They'll be pissed. And it will be reflected in Obama's approval ratings.

What will Obama do? What he usually does when things aren't going his way. Sulk on an expensive golf course somewhere. All for the best. Meanwhile, we need to focus obsessively on turning in a strong performance in 2014. If the GOP take back the Senate that year, then Obama is an instant lame duck.

62 It's not "Obama fatigue". It's just the change in the way people today consume news. Each election cycle, there's a ~1.5% change in the electorate, as X people die and X+ people become new voters. That change isn't 'simple'; it has exponential features, like compound interest does. Thus, the additional numbers of new voters aren't accounted for by simply tacking on those who reached voting age; there's an accelerated effect on each age, up to ~37, whereupon it starts to decline, but very much more slowly than the accelerated rates of increase earlier. 'New voters' share much more in common with each other and with those in the range of accelerated rates than they do with those in the slower decelerated rates. Thus, the 'Generation' effect: not quite 20 years, and not all identified up or down, but most often in both directions. Younger new voters begin to identify more with older new voters than they do with those younger than they are but not of voting age; older new voters vice versa; and this starts to happen in the early 30s. The reach of the latter's identification tends to remain sometime into a person's 50s. So what's been happening in RECENT years is an accelerated resort to non-'traditional' news and general information gathering. That is: less to dead tree newspaper, less to TV network channels, less to establishment media and news, but still: ACCELERATED demand for information. It's pretty easy to reconcile those tendencies and trends with generally DECREASING resort to establishment network channel TV against a larger INCREASING resort to the Internet generally, but increasingly also to all manner of sources that oldies and more narrow-frame-minded people would regard as 'oddball'. For example: watching it off a site linked to a Twitterfeed, or an Instagram; watching it off Newsbusters, or Mediaite, or off a network being fed off a single-access feeder. That doesn't mean there were NO factors that could have had a depressive effect on top of all those (frankly far larger) factors. There's the matter of this being a re-elected president's first SOTU; there's the matter of the various components of the Fiscal Cliff having been broken off and segregated into what APPEAR to be more manageable bites for Congress; there's the impression from the election on and again from just after New Year's of a president who's 'got this' under control, which reduces worry, which in turn reduces interest. But mostly the effects THIS year are easily expected and predictable from the fact that for the 47% of information consuming voters whose favorite candidate LOST, it's not 'fun' to watch the SOTU, and not much more 'fun' to watch the reply (or replies; I think different numbers apply to the second one). Could ANY of it be traceable to "Obama fatigue"? Sure -- particularly to Republicans who've become enervated, discouraged and depressed from not defeating Obama. In sum, this phenomenon is more likely suddenly detecting a foul order emanating from your own bathroom while you yourself are taking a shit.
