Yes, alas, it's an Open Thread, and not a liveblog. I don't really feel like listening to this imbecilic gasbag. I asked around but no one else has much interest, either.
I proposed liveblogging the Derp song for as long as Obama spoke but that idea sounds cuter than it would be in practice.
Meanwhile, Ben Carson says he doesn't care if telling Obama the truth is found by some to be "offensive."
By the way, supposedly MSNBC is prepared to do the old split-screen if there's some breaking news in the Chris Dorner matter. They don't want to, of course. But they claim they're prepared to do so.
CNN/Chris Dorner Update: No, Anderson Cooper did not ask if it's harder to find a black man at night. See the "red flag" at the end.
I only say this because for five magical seconds I believed this was true, and I briefly lived in a wonderful world in which Cooper would be fired or suspended or at least painfully embarrassed tomorrow a.m., and then I realized "Wait, that's ridiculous, that couldn't possibly have happened," and then I was rudely torn from that magical place.
I watched 15 minutes of it (before the tweet) and he didn't say that at least in that timeframe.
So I wanted to spare you from similar disappointment.

Anyone who over their life receives more in government benefits than they pay in taxes is by definition a net liability.
And the sort of low-skilled, low-literacy immigrants it's being proposed to legalize are NEVER going to pay more in taxes than they get in benefits. They can't possibly do so. Obamacare alone will bloat in size enormously the instant that they become citizens and able to draw upon it.
The only immigrants who are likely to not be liabilities are the ones who already speak English and who arrive with useful skills. That's a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of the pool of prospective applicants for amnesty.
I give up. It was a nice country while it lasted. I don't recognize it any more and I especially don't recognize the modern GOP with these sorts of insane proposals.

In one of them he asks the kids, is two better than one? One little black boy says yes, and demonstrates that he can wave his head around and his arms (two things at once). There are two simple cases that any of our political leaders should be able to make within a span of couple minutes:
1. Tax revenue are continually increasing. The problem is that spending has increased a lot more. All you need to do to make this case is to compare the amount we were spending and collecting ten years ago vs. today. While you're at it, show that defense spending only accounts for a 1/5 of our budget, so people can't blame it on that.
2. Even if you increased taxes on the rich by 100%, that wouldn't solve the problem. While you're at it, show the rate the rich are currently taxed at, which is much higher than most people realize.
I've seen barely any of this--in the Presidential campaign, on the Sunday shoes, or in interviews with our leaders. Saying "we can't spend money we don't have" and "we're $16 tril. in debt" is not sufficient. That does not explain to anybody why increasing taxes won't solve the problem.
Instead, our leaders have been bitching about "fairness" and a "balanced approached." They have done barely anything to explain why a balanced approach or spending cuts are necessary as opposed to just taxing a few rich people.
And, yes, it should be obvious by now that this requires a lot of explanation to a majority of people...or at least two minutes worth of it.

He definitely mentioned the Constitution at least two times that I remember, and not in that vague way all politicians do. He specified Constitutional requirements and spoke directly about how government is the problem. So kudos to him.
As for the unfortunate part, the GOP needs serious, competent, help with stagecraft, presentation, and poise.
1) The lighting for both the Rubio and Paul speeches was amateurish, at best.
2) Both men were visibly nervous.
3) Both men were in a hurry.
4) Rubio suffered from poor physical preparation. You don't get flop sweats and dehydration if you plan properly for a speech. (Hint: it's EXACTLY the same routine singers go through. This isn't something new and unknown.)
5) The Tea Party backdrop for Paul's speech was inelegant, noisy, and distracting.
6) Rubio looked like he was backed into some corner by a producer to get the window shot. It looked like he was crammed into a nook.
7) Audio tweaks (like they ALWAYS use on Obama) would help. Especially for Rand Paul. We don't need the God-reverb that Rush and Beck laugh about, but a tiny amount of compression, some EQ, and a hint of reverb would have helped both speeches.
STOP DOING THESE REBUTTALS SOLO! Put these men (or women) in front of an audience! Nothing looks as dorky as a political speech done solo. The only time those should be used is for grave, executive announcements to the people. Period!I've noticed that even such a dynamic speaker as Allen West looks diminished and nervous when speaking into a camera in a closed room. Put him in front of an audience, though, and the difference is amazing!
Because the GOP never takes presentation seriously, you end up with the water grab that will live on in Saturday Night Live infamy.
Sarah Palin, Allen West, please take note! Get some pros to help with all stages of production and presentation. This is coming at least a decade late, already. The Dems are years ahead on this score.
(BTW: Yes, I heard Rubio's calls for immigration reform. I just see this as a positive step in his getting himself fit for the national stage. I'm not suddenly a Rubio guy.)
