— LauraW Four years without a budget, vastly spiraling debt, credit downgrade, Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the sequester...you can ask an Obama supporter about numerous recent actions and events of this government and they will deny that Obama had anything to do with it.
Then if you ask this person if Obama is doing a good job, they will express giddy support for all his good work for which he cannot be held responsible.
Previously, Janet Napolitano smarmily said that sequester cuts left the administration no choice but to release waves of illegal immigrants who had been detained for breaking other laws.
Then when that decision sparked a backlash, she said it had been made by some faceless drone "...in the field."
And now that the decision to close White House tours has been called out as a similarly obvious (but less dangerous) ploy, Obama again deflects responsibility.
ItÂ’s your sequester and you live in the White House, but you have nothing to do with childishly cutting off tours to punish people? Please.
President Obama said his administration was looking at ways to resume White House tours for school groups.“This was not a decision that went up to the White House,” noted Obama in an ABC News interview aired on Wednesday, saying the directive came from the Secret Service.
The Secret Service says the White House made the decision to cancel the tours. The White House says it was the Secret Service's idea first.
This game is getting f*cking stupid.
It's the major press, of course, constantly reframing everything and keeping Obama's own actions from tainting his record.
They cannot report on an issue without also building in an excuse or cover for Obama within the same article.
It has become reflex now to look for the excuse or fall guy in every news story about this administration's dysfunction.

What're the odds that textbooks and other media of the future will feature "lightened up" images of the First Black President? Just like the MFM lightened up pictures of Trayvon to make him seem less like a punk, history will "lighten up" pictures of Obammy to make him look whiter. Because it would be unseemly for the Mocha Messiah to be associated with the record for Worst American President In the History Of Everything Ever.

To put this in perspective, we used to have very healthy back and forth discussions about conservatism vs left-liberalism (I deny them the pleasure of being called liberals, when they are nothing of the sort) back when Bush was president, but after Obama got elected he lost his marbles. Any news story now must contain a paragraph to explain how it advances The Narrative. Has anyone read an article about the weather recently where there is a storm, and there is not a paragraph toward the end somehow linking it to global warming? Or a shooting that doesn't link to gun control?

I have no qualms about who the majority of Enlisted Folks will want to side with.... its the Officer Class that I worry about.... and the Military does Program you into following orders (even though they pay lip service to the idea you don't follow an illegal order, the baseline is to always follow orders).

Yep. I remember I had a "moderate" Democrat friend. Been friends with her since High School, even once thought about dating her. She hated Obama in 08 (was for Hillary) but voted for him because of the economy. It didn't bother me, considering the conditions of 2008 I could see why a Democrat would vote for Obama then. By 2012 she had spent 4 years bashing him as a horrible President and said she opposed Obamacare. I thought she was a Reagan-Democrat like voter who would vote for a Romney type figure. About 2 weeks before the election she told me Obama was a horrible President but that she rather be "financially broke" then "morally broke" and would vote for Obama again. I flipped out. I couldn't believe it. Our friendship ended that day. The only libs I deal with now are family and I make sure never to bring politics up with them.

Following orders is part of the military creed. Having the integrity to decide that it is an illegal order and not to be followed is a personal characteristic. Hiding that level of personal integrity from the commissars is not easy in today's military!

A Russian news report clains a trio of "armed" dolphins have escaped into the wild (Australian AP)
No, itÂ’s not a promo for the latest Syfy movie. There are claims circulating that three dolphins, trained to attack humans, have escaped from a Ukrainian military training facility armed with head-mounted guns and knives.
Could this seemingly outrageous claim be true? Unfortunately, the U.S. media have nothing on a number of international publications that publish completely fabricated tales, often to score political points. And for its part, the Ukrainian government has denied the claim, calling it a “fabrication” and a “gross provocation.”
The Russian publication RIA Novosti says the Ukrainian dolphin program is two-fold: training the dolphins to detect and mark mines and equipping them with weapons to attack enemy human swimmers who may pose a threat to Ukrainian naval vessels.
Interestingly, Wired points out that some Russian soldiers are actually trained to combat dolphins in case they are attacked by them while on a mission.
And as sensational as it may sound, itÂ’s not like this story simply appeared out of thin air. As several news outlets have reported, the former Soviet Union engaged in similar training practices with dolphins and the sea-faring mammals have been used by countries around the world in various naval exercises, including in the U.S. Navy.

Detect and mark mines, okay.
Knifing enemy swimmers? Um... yeah. I kind of don't think so. Anyway, if a dolphin wanted to kill somebody they could just hump them to death.
If you're going to make up stories, Ria Novosti, you're supposed to replace the knives and guns strapped to their heads with laser beams. Okay? Sheesh. Frigging foreigners.

Here is some humor from my local paper comments section. Hilarious that these people still have Bush derangement syndrome. This is from the comments on an article about the deficit:
It's a matter of fact that we had a budget surplus until Bush took office. It's inconvenient that you don't like that fact but it doesn't cease to make it so.
We shouldn't forget that Bush was an absolute unmitigated disaster as a president. A m.o.r.o.n. of the lowest order. He allowed us to be attacked. Allowed his venal Vice President to take over and destroyed civil liberties at home, started two ridiculous wars, got us into debt and precipitated a major financial collapse, allowed a major US city to be destroyed with barely a smirk and a shrug.
What more do you want? The. Worst. President. Ever. Horrible. A disaster. Incompetency to the point of evil. A monster with the face of a smirking chimp. A killer clown. Awful. Rubbish. Human garbage.

“He shouldn’t have tried to wife that b****, man. She’s not that type of a h*. She gets around, man.”
In Snoop’s view, Kardashian being a “ho” doomed the business arrangement, sorry, marriage from the start. And the rapper hadn’t finished there with his opinions of the reality TV star who he’d never met:
“She’s cold-blooded. I’m pretty sure she’ll have a book in a month talking about all the n****s she got and how she played ‘em. [...] So my advice is, look, you can’t make a h* a housewife. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Let her do what she was born to do. H*.”

From the sidebar, naval experts are starting to catch up to me on policy.
"In my view, unmanned aviation will create a new golden age of aircraft carriers. In fact, the day is fast coming when we design a carrier from the keel up to launch and recover primarily unmanned aircraft. When a UCAV returns from its mission, it will recover, be re-armed, refueled, re-greased, and re-missioned on an assembly line that will enable high sortie rates even with the extended range of the missions they will fly."
The F-35 is a waste of money and any program advocating manned aircraft is a throwback to horseback cavalry charges.

to quote Snoop Dog, you cannot "wife" a "ho", to wit

I'm assuming a switch to unmanned aircraft would coincide with a policy of redundant communications - not relying totally on the pair of Radio Shack walkie talkies for the full data flow.
Also, that fraction of a second delay may kill the lead UAV, but the crew will simply push a button and be in control of the next one in line, then the next after that. All of that while maintaining situational awareness.
Data overload is one of the biggest problems facing old time fighter pilots. With enough people handling separate areas, the problem is solved.

And drones are great against the Third World... but agianst a First Rate Military with any type of adequate EW capability??? Broadband jamming is pretty easy with sufficient power.... and all you need to do is point it at the satelite... ie, you can do it from your home country if we are projecting power...
And then add in the Transmission Lag of Drone to Sat, to ground station for sensor data.... then ground station to Sat back to drone for Control (ie firing info?)... Will bring a whole new Truth to the Online Gamer 'Lag Death'. Just basic propogation delay is 1/4 of a second... and with any time spend in Que at the Sat end (it will have limited bandwidth due to power and bandwidth restrictions)... 1/4 of a second is the MINIMUM time...
Man'd Aircraft are not done yet... IMO.

Except that all that Data will still have to flow to the Operator of the Drone... which will take a butt load of Bandwidth.... and bandwidth is NOT that big... The useable spectrum for this is pretty small...
Also, you must understand that the Power of the transmiters used to uplink that info to the Sat is very limited from the drone.... making it pretty easy to jam.

The F-35 might be a waste of money. I'm no expert in aircraft development. However, I think you're in error when you wrote, '...any program advocating manned aircraft is a throwback to horseback cavalry charges.'
Take drones, for example. So far, missile-equipped drones have only been used against pre-industrial age enemies who no doubt think rifles and mortars and IEDs are a kind of divine gift, assembled by Allah's elves in a magical workshop in paradise. None of those targeted has had the wherewithal to jam or shoot down a drone. I'm betting the Russians do, as well as the Chinese. Drones are limited-use, in my view. They only work against enemies lacking resources and technological sophistication.
I guess we'll find out how drones fare against modern countermeasures soon enough. President Obama's feckless foreign policy invites aggression. Any hostile foreign power must be tempted to act while Obama's in the White House, Hagel's in the Pentagon, Brennan's at Langley, and Kerry's at State. They'll probably never see such weak American leadership concentrated in one administration at one time ever again. The smart move for bad guys would be to go now, while the window's open.

By redundant, I mean different types of communications. We already know the lag time is too great to use satellites, so radio, microwave and laser signals would be bounced off drones (or possibly manned) communication aircraft circling the area at 90,000 feet.
If communications are lost, the UAV can be programmed to turn, evade and return to base or to fly into a pre-arranged target. No pilot, no problem.

If you have 5 people assigned to each UAV, one would be running the show and most likely piloting. Others would be monitoring the systems, operating the weapons systems, navigating and running for latte refills.

Yeah.... because teh LCS is SUCH a success! It goes FAST... right up until it breaks apart due to the stresses from that speed.... and it has GREAT missles and firepower.... at least once we finally get around to building the weapons we are supposed to put on it....

2nd Bn, 61st ADA. Been there, done that.
Half the problem we have in this discussion is that most people believe all UAVs need to be flown by people in trailers parked on a runway in Arizona. From there, simple signals are bounced off a satellite for a 500 mile round trip with the resulting lag time.
The real discussion is wasting hundreds of billions on old methods when we should be generation skipping to the next big thing.

I'm not saying that the possibilities aren't being explored. What I'm saying is that technologically it is simply not viable for the foreseeable future. And by "foreseeable future" I mean in the next twenty years.
The bandwidth problem alone is too much. Frequency deconflication is already a nightmare and as much as we'd like to, we cannot bend the laws of physics to our whims.

Even if you lit every oil well in Iraq on fire, that's a lot of smoke.
So, everytime there is an engagement, as the wing commander for the manned forces you would deploy your gigantic smoke machine to obscure everything for miles. That done, what do you do about the microwave data stream?

I'm a commercial artist who happens to be an infantry veteran, so I'm sure others are far better qualified than I am to answer that question--like, say, the Russian, Chinese, Indian, et al military scientists currently working the problem.
Bottom line: The drone-only strategy you advocate is untested in modern battlefield conditions against an enemy with advanced technological capabilities roughly near or equivalent to our own. Uproven technologies should not be the linchpin of any war-fighting strategy anywhere unless and until they are proven.

Allen, instead of 12 F-35s coming in, you've got 120 UAVs bearing down on you.
That's 120 individual, independent thinking pilots just as sharp and motivated as the guys they used to stick in cockpits. Out of this group, who are "flying" in essentially a bubble with 360 degree visibility (with magnification if they like), you're going to put up enough tons a chaff that it would block line of sight communications for long enough that the pilots would abandon their missions and auto-home the UAVs.
Good plan. I guess the future of aviation is still silk scarves and leather helmets.

Wait a sec. I thought you said a drone was being run by a committee of 5 guys. So that's 600 pilots.
Furthermore, I thought you said the problem with losing a plane was losing an expensive pilot, which are hard to find.
So now, suddenly, we need to find 600 pilots who are every bit as good as the 12 guys we would have needed if we were flying F-35s.

You just can't bring yourself to grant the validity of opposing viewpoints, can you? So there you are, a giant, a visionary, surrounded by all of these pesky little people. If only those unsuspecting fools whom you encountered every day knew your real genius. Little do they know. You laugh at their narrow-minded stupidity--Ha! One day, one day you'll show them. You'll show them all.
I bet they love you at parties.

Yeah, but it's Ace's website so I make allowances.

Truth be told, furloughs were instituted last year to try to deal with some serious budget problems.
A state where the law makers strike down voter's desires and where they are now making up ways to circumvent voter's input on tax raising. Sigh.

It's like tic-tac-toe with 2 retarded monkeys with red crayons. Nobody wins, but the walls are all marked up anyway.
