Obama's Blather About Income Inequality Is Just His Most Recent MacGuffin
— Ace

On Friday I wrote about the MacGuffinization of American politics, a state in which the things we talk about in the national conversation, and pretend to be important, are not at all important to those pushing them upon us (the Left). Like a MacGuffin in a movie, these things are merely plot devices to motivate an audience's interest in the Hero -- Barack Obama, of course.

Mickey Kaus talks about this a little in discussing Obama's latest distraction, income inequality.

4 Things the MSM WonÂ’t Tell You About ObamaÂ’s Inequality Speech:

Now that the excitement has died down You have to admire President Obama for choosing to give a speech declaring that the fight against “growing inequality”–specifically economic inequality–is “the defining challenge of our time” and the “focus” of “all our efforts”–given that:

a. Five years into his presidency he so far hasn’t done anything to stop growing income inequality–the problem has gotten worse on his watch.

b. He doesn’t have any proposals (“It’s time to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act”) that come close to solving the problem as he defines it.

c. His one big previous initiative to reduce inequality–the Affordable Care Act–may now be hopelessly screwed up due to his own inattention and non-competence.

d. His remaining big domestic initiative–”comprehensive” immigration reform–would almost certainly make inequality worse by vastly increasing the number of unskilled workers bidding down wages at the bottom of the income scale, with the profits from the cheap labor going to business owners at the top.

Kaus observes that income inequality is the perfect MacGuffin for a long-running melodramatic serial: Because it's a MacGuffin that can never actually be attained.

Greater income equality–quintile shares, Gini coefficients and the rest–is the Great MacGuffin of the Democratic base. It’s a goal they will never reach. Deep down they know they will never reach it. But that doesn’t matter because the goal itself holds their coalition together and gives them a reason to go on.

So the audience will just have to keep coming back, week after week, to be eternally teased that satisfaction is finally at hand, only to discover, once again, that the Cigarette Smoking Man's identity has once again been obscured.

2 You should link to the Insty thing:

"Sutirtha Bagchi of the University of MichiganÂ’s business school and Jan Svejnar of ColumbiaÂ’s School of International and Public Affairs studied how inequality correlates with economic growth. In general, more inequality meant slower growth, and less inequality meant faster growth.

But in many countries, over various time periods, growing inequality had no effect on economic growth. The new study suggests that an increase in inequality hurt the economy when the rich were getting rich through political connections."

And boy howdy have the politically connected gotten rich under the JEF.

11 This kind of crap never ceases to astonish me.  I'm always explaining to people that income inequality is meaningless; what matters is what you can get for your $.  The average middle class person lives in Heaven compared to even the wealthiest tycoons of yesteryear.  All those kings and queens living in guilded palaces -- flush toilets?  Automobiles?  Aircon-funking-ditioning?  Relatively safe child birth?   Puhleeeze.  Besides, all those super-duper expensive gadgets that the rich can buy and you want?  You know how 3rd gen stuff is so much better and cheaper?  That's because the rich are the beta testers.  It goes on.

So another term for this, besides MacGuffin, might be 'Flash Gordon serial'.

41 They want to focus on income inequality to mask real inequalities in power and wealth. Most people face high swings of income inequality against themselves over time (ie, periods of unemployment, periods of low wage earning, some time of highish earning), but the left is actively against having a person equally distribute their income over time (ie be responsible and plan ahead). Where power and wealth are concerned, this should be obvious. People who are not particularly wealthy (almost everyone) focuses on income since they rely on it to survive, whereas a wealthy, powerful individual has oodles of cash and influence such that they are never in want of the basics (they can always get someone to pay them for being a member of the correct tribe). In short, Obama is a SCOAMT.

Rachel Maddow will be talking about it for weeks and going on an on about how wonderful you are." "You think? They'd really go for that?" "Yeah! You know, something really inspirational, like my race speech. Let's make sure we knock this one out of the park." "Mr. President, have you ever seen yourself throw a baseball?" 61 Income inequality is exactly like that old joke about the cause of accidents. A bunch of scientists create the greatest wiz bang computer to solve complex problems. Insurance experts note that the number one cause of accidents in the home are people tripping on the top and bottom steps of a stair case. They feed the information into the super computer for analysis. The computer recommends they remove the top and bottom steps. Liberals want to remove the top and bottom steps of economic stratification.

96 So the audience will just have to keep coming back, week after week, to
be eternally teased that satisfaction is finally at hand ...

Ace nails it again, except for one small detail that really bugs me: Choom Boy is not exactly alone in doing this. Every member of Congress who opens his/her corrupt yap about every problem the current government has caused, for the most part all on its own, gives us the same "message" by saying, in effect, "this is a Bad, Bad, Not-So-Good Thing." They view with alarm, and predict disaster ahead.

Even at election time, the only "solution" they offer is: "vote for me! I will go to Washington and drain the swamp!"

Same goes for the Pundits, Theirs and Ours alike. Think about it: when was the last time you saw a comment from a columnist or blogger that proposed a concrete solution? Who has gone through the three-step process of identifying a problem, formulating a way to correct it and actually advocating that step?

After five years of President Historic First's© arrant nonsense, we are all pretty well aware that he is an incompetent, arrogant jerk. We know if there's a mess hall, he's gonna set up a latrine right next to it.

And yet we do nothing. Not only do we go through the endless cycle of rehashing his incompetence, but we also, time after time,  tolerate it through inaction. It is as if -- to use a Conservative Poster Boy -- John Galt were to spend the length of Atlas Shrugged ranting about the company he worked for while continuing to draw his paycheck.

Is someone going to break this cycle? More and more, I think the answer is "no." It's all such good theater, so the members of Congress have their pay, perks and privilege, and all the Astute Political Observers sell articles and watch the web hits come in.

If someone can refute this, I'd like to see it. But more, I'd like to see someone who has played this game through five-plus years of choom-smoke stand up and offer us a possible way out.

99 The question is not if there is income inequality, or even if it has gotten worse... because it has... The middle class is getting hammered... and its even harder to break into the middle class... Average household incomes are down... the buying power of the dollar is down... There are enclaves of prosperity in various industries.... Banking and such... But the reason for this, is the Government itself... The dollar is weaker because of them printing dollars. The economy sucks because those who Create things are hammered by Government regulations, while those who just move money around are given deals which help them by the Government. So the only way the Government can solve the Income Disparity, is to get the hell out of the way...

To a certain class of Obama fan, it doesn't matter what Obama's doing. Just the fact that he's doing it means that we support him, and we cheer his progress.

--Sure, he ran against the individual mandate, but once he was in office and he was fighting the GOP over what would become Obamacare, it didn't matter what was in the bill. All that mattered was Obama's victory.

--Gay marriage? He was against it, but he was on a journey. A quest towards righteousness. We knew he'd get there. He'd triumph over his own limitations and the evil of the GOP. So even if he was a flawed hero, we knew he'd do the right thing in the end. So we cheered him even when he took a position that normally only bigots take.

129 The "Two Tribes" thought experiment is something that should be pounded every single time this comes up.

One village full of happy little peons weaves excellent baskets. Everyone uses their own basket to gather berries. Income: zero.

Another village makes excellent fishing spears. Everyone uses their own spear to catch fish. Income here also zero.

A dastardly forward-thinker spends his free time wandering around thinking "There -has- to be something other than fish!" and discovers the berry-village. He trades his spear for as basket.

1) Example of a true trade - both sides of the spear-for-basket trade happier with the result.
2) Instant income inequality, even if the explorer does nothing else.
3) Massive income inequality if he hires his son-in-law to make excess spears to continue the trading.
4) An example of something that (most likely) can -not- be fixed by explaining to everyone calmly "You should all make a basket and a spear, here's the manual." (Because 20% will always tell them to piss up a rope, they -like- making baskets. Or spears. Or whining.)
5) Forcible retraining also -not- going to make people happier here.

The part that's crucial is that this is a wealth-creating step. And every -other- wealth-creating step has the same key points.

Liberals seem firmly attached to the idea of a fixed-size pie. It drives more than half of the insanity. The mere ideas that the two parties to a trade can -both- end up happier (without one being delusional/deluded/exploited) and that wealth can be actually produced is pretty much fatal to the entire worldview. If they can be tricked into thinking about it.

165 The only place you will ever find equality is in the grave. It is also the only place where you are free from insecurity, from fear and hunger, from being offended, from being fatter or uglier, from being stupider or poorer, from being discriminated against or feeling inferior. Everything the Left professes to strive for can be found in death and death alone.

169 Liberals seem firmly attached to the idea of a fixed-size pie.

The irony is that in a state that owns all property and means of production, it is essentially a fixed-size pie.  The only wealth that can be created is what can be grown or mined, processed and sold to buyers outside of the country.  The state "selling" goods to its own subjects just moves a finite amount of wealth around; it doesn't create any new wealth.

185 Growing income inequality is largely or entirely an artifact of inflation. Incomes of the successful tend to go up if for no other reason than the cost of living, meanwhile it is always possible to earn and have nothing. Thus the gap between top and bottom is continually and artificially stretched. At the same time, we keep redefining "poverty". There was a time when a king had no access to clean water, or safe food, or a competent doctor, or even indoor plumbing. He certainly didn't have a telephone, or TV, or internet, and he likely never traveled more than a few miles from the place he was born - and that by horse. The poorest among us is rich beyond the wildest imagination of kings of old, and would even be considered rich by the standards of my grandparents. Very few can honestly be considered "poor" by the standards of the bulk of humanity or the witness of history.

224 income inequality.

Apparently utopia is too big a step all at once and we have to get to heaven one baby step at a time. So income inequality can easily be achieved if we all just work for the Federal Government at prevailing union scale wages with generous benefits and high quality Cadillac health insurance coverage. Then we will all be equal.

No reasonable person would actually want some people to be forced to work for less than union scale. That's why everyone supports the minimum wage. Everyone should all be paid equally for the work they do.

We should also be well aware of housing inequality. There are simply too many people who have more house than they need. Either they should be required to share some of that living space, or perhaps pay a house tax that would equalize the disparity between those multimillion dollar estates and the poor shanty towns the homeless have to live in. That could be easily solved by simply abolishing private property. So if you wanted to live in say one of those big multimillion dollar mansions, you just move in and claim your fair share. That would be fair.

"Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has dropped yet another bombshell allegation: President Obama wasn't honest with the American people when he blamed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for a sarin-gas attack in that killed hundreds of civilians.

...

Here's what Hersh alleges:

The administration buried intelligence on the fundamentalist group/rebel group al-Nusra. It was seen, Hersh says, as an alarming threat by May, with the U.S. being aware of al-Nusra member able to make and use sarin, and yet the group – associated with the rebel opposition in Syria – was never considered a suspect in the sarin attacks. "

295 Every candidate for anything in any coming election should highlight several facts that have been purposely ignored by the press. The main fact concerning income inequality should be how fast Obama eliminated school choice in Washington D.C. They should highlight the fact that for the money spent to set up Obamacare, each citizen could have been given at least $50,000. That would have been a big step towards income equality. If every candidate for everything says the facts- and there are lots- the word will trickle down to even the lowest LIV's. We have to inform people of what has been going on. The NSA crap got through to the youth, and the rest of the people can be reached, too, if they are made aware.
