Obama's "Cloud Castle" of Brazen Lies
— Ace

Sorry, I was tweeting this buscrash of a presser when I should have been blogging it.

I'll sum up my take-away later.

For now, maybe give this Jonah Goldberg piece a spin: Obamacare Shadenfruedarama. Despite the funny title, it's about something more important.

The hubris of our ocean-commanding commander-in-chief surely isn’t news to readers of this website. He’s said that he’s smarter and better than everyone who works for him. His wife informed us that he has “brought us out of the dark and into the light” and that he would fix our broken souls. The man defined sin itself as “being out of alignment with my values.” We may be the ones we’ve been waiting for, but at the same time, everyone has been waiting for him. Or as he put it in 2007, “Every place is Barack Obama country once Barack Obama’s been there.”

In every tale of hubris, the transgressor is eventually slapped across the face with the semi-frozen flounder of reality. The Greeks had a god, Nemesis, whose scythe performed the same function. It was Nemesis who lured Narcissus to the pool where he fell in love with his own reflection....

Every day, the supposedly conspiratorial right-wing smear that Obama cared more about economic redistribution than he did about the middle class or economic growth looks more reasonable. Surely we’re allowed to say, “We told you so”?

[A]s a political and ideological matter, this is beyond fantastic. For years we’ve been told that Democrats were more “reality-based,” that “facts have a liberal bias,” in the words of Paul Krugman, and that if they could just have their way, they could fix all of our problems. No one represented this arrogant promise more than Barack Obama himself. But, with an irony so rich it would be made of Corinthian leather if it was a car seat, the only way he could get his signature legislation passed was to baldly and brazenly lie about it, over and over and over again. He created a rhetorical cloud castle where no one would lose his insurance, every family would save thousands of dollars, and millions of the uninsured would suddenly get coverage. Anyone who doubted this was called a fool or a liar, or even a racist...

And all of this — every bit of it — is their own fault.

Tax cuts for the Middle Class, corporate tax cuts to get job growth, and measures to bring energy prices down. Winter is coming. Families are hurting. Something positive needs to be proposed by Republicans.

112 When she was last a candidate for president in 2007, Hillary Clinton unveiled her own health care proposal, which, like Obamacare, included beefed-up benefits and a catchy pitch: "If you have a plan you like, you keep it." Obama went on to defeat Clinton, but he adopted her tag line to help win support for his own health care plan -- making the same promise, for which he recently apologized.

"You can keep the doctors you know and trust. You keep the insurance you have," Clinton said on Sept. 17, 2007, at the Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. "If you have private insurance you like, nothing changes — you can keep that insurance."

Clinton's campaign website echoed that claim. "If you have a plan you like, you keep it," it read.

193 You have a Type 99. My stepson just got one himself. How the frak do you find ammo for it????

Posted by: EC at November 14, 2013 01:14 PM (GQ8sn)

No, I have a Type 30, 6.5x50, and I reload for it. Otherwise ammo will set you back approximately one of each type of limbs that you currently have two of (Midway has 7.7 Japanese for 41 bucks a box of 20).

And on that note, a scope mount made for a Type 99 might fit on a Type 38, but it won't fit on a Type 30 carbine. fml

212 Have been batting around a hypothesis here.

To wit, that Obamacare is an identity-politics trap for many old-line Democrats.

Consider the position of a typical cynical senior Democratic pol inside the Beltway when suddenly Obama comes out of nowhere, and blazes across the firmament, and ends up in the Oval Office.

Any cynical old pol will tell you that whether it's show business or politics, novelty acts usually have a short run. And that's probably precisely what they expected. For Obama, the novelty act, to be in office for one term. And then a return to something more like politics as usual under a different President.

So when Obama proposed a radical takeover of one-sixth of the economy, the cynical old Democratic pols said, "This is a complete goat rodeo in the making. But, if full implementation is delayed till after 2012, we can go in and repeal the worst parts before they kick in. And if we've got a Republican president by then, that's our top cover. That lets us do it, but claim that we're doing it under duress."

Because having that top cover is very important to cynical old Democrats who have to keep their identity-politics hustle intact. It was absolutely politically impossible for any of them to say directly to The Historic First Black President that his plan was a goat rodeo. It was impossible to water down any of the worst provisions of Obamacare.

But, they figured, that's okay, because Obama is one and done. We'll pass the thing just as he wants it. Then later on, once Obama is out, the identity-politics bomb of open disagreement with The Historic First Black President is defused, and the goat rodeo can be averted. They could tell the progressive and black voters that, gosh, Obama was brilliant and Obamacare would have been great, but, darn it, he lost and now the awful Republicans are tearing down his legacy. (A legacy which the cynical old pols in reality could not wait to get rid of lest it endanger their slots at the trough.)

Then the unthinkable happened. The GOP coughed up a stiff, tin-eared zillionaire Mormon android who couldn't actually beat Obama. One and done, as predicted and expected? Didn't happen. The opportunity to shiv Obamacare in the back and blame it on the Republicans? Didn't happen.

So now the cynical senior Democratic pols are in a total panic. The goat rodeo is busting out of the gate in total disarray. It's a polling disaster for their entire party. And yet a genuinely substantive fix, involving major massive changes, effectively scrapping most of Obamacare as we know it, means a public conflict with Obama. Telling him to his face he was incompetent and wrong. And it means potentially pissing off the crucial African-American voter base which votes Democratic by 19 to 1 margins. Identity politics are a double-edged sword.

219 FWIW, in a gentler time Grafs and Sons had 7.7x58 for 28.99 a box of 20, for Hornady, but apparently there was some problem with it and the factory has recalled all of it. You can get brass from Norma, anything with the Norma name on it is probably twice what it is actually worth but at least you can get it.

On the up side, 7.7x58 is actually a bit stronger than 30-06 or .308 either one, and even the late war models of the Type 99 that aren't very pretty cosmetically are solid rifles. My advice is to have a good gunsmith check it out before you shoot it.

How bad has it been hacked up? Is the scope mounted with a scout mount (a scout mount requires the removal of the rear sight and the mount bolts on in it's place, no permanent modification of the rifle) or is the receiver drilled and tapped? If it has a scout mount, is the rear sight included with the rifle? Mum ground off? Bolt handle bent? Stock cut up?

236 Anyone who thinks the insurance companies are going to suddenly turn on Obama now are blowing smoke up their own butts. Remember the behind-closed-door meetings when this thing was getting written up?

They're doing what they feel is in their best interests.  Some version of Obamacare was going to get pushed through with or without their support.  It would've been foolish of them not to try and advance their interests and grab as many goodies as they could in the process.

From their perspective, there's a lot to like- mandatory participation, subsidies, higher premiums, and the competition can't undercut them with cheaper plans that cover fewer claims (birth control, drug treatment, etc).

That's not to say the insurance companies are the Good Guys (they're not), but in the end the blame lies 100% with the Dems.

But is the handle bent over to clear the scope, or is it straight? The reason I'm asking all these things is to determine if the rifle is pretty much stock or if it has been "sporterized". FWIW, if it's pretty much stock (or can easily be turned back that way) a collector will value it more. If not, it's an interesting hunting rifle.
