And that's an improvement- it's only taken the proggs 75 years to stop calling any economic difficulty "All Hoover's Fault"
I wonder how President Bush feels about being the 21st century's Herbert Hoover?

Which is ironic, because they will then go on to explain all of the reasons why it happened, and why it is not Obama's fault. And all of the things they will mention could have been. Wait for it.

First, he gets 99% of Bush tax cuts made permanent while getting Obama to own the economy with his “victory” Meanwhile, there have been some bad signs in Europe.
Today, Drudgereport announces: “GDP Shows Surprise Drop for U.S. in Fourth Quarter” and “GDP -0.1%…”
$165 billion in Q4 stimulus could not even generate a positive GDP return
I suggest that Republicans stay in disarray so Obama can own DC and the economy.

Here's the release from the American Bankers Association:
The decline in the fourth quarter was driven primarily by reduced government spending, inventory drawdown and drag from exports. Federal defense spending fell at a 22% annual rate in the fourth quarter, producing a 1.3% drag on GDP growth. The cuts came primarily from outlays other than military personnel, suggesting that the military has been preparing for the looming sequestration.
The drawdown on inventories provided a 1.3% drag on growth in the fourth quarter, however is a positive sign for growth going forward. As inventories decline, it means more is being consumed than is being produced. This means that in coming months production will need to be ramped up to meet demand and rebuild inventories.
Finally, net exports provided a 0.3% drag on growth as continued weakness overseas hampers our growth.
Despite the strong declines in a number of categories, the fundamentals actually improved in the third quarter. Personal consumption added 1.5% to GDP growth, up from 1.1% the previous quarter. Fixed investment also improved notably, rising to 1.2% from 0.1% the previous quarter. Both residential investment and non-residential investment improved. These two areas are where we can see sustainable growth and will be the pillar of a sustainable recovery. Their continued strength suggests the fourth quarter results are unlikely to be repeated.

It is early (to me). I work from home, self-employed, and until recently used to stay up really late (2, 3, 4 am). Got by on 4-6 hours a sleep every night, some days better than others. But starting Jan 1, I decided to make sleep a priority and I try to get to bed by midnight now. Have to say it's great to feel well rested every day. Anyway, I'll always have empathy for the late nighters.

1Q 2013 probably won't show a contraction, so it technically won't be a recession, even if the -0.1% holds up for 4Q 2012, which it probably won't after the inevitable revisions.
That being said, it's also fair to say that this is no long a recovery, but is simply a "new normal"... the stagnant staggering clusterf*** of a miserable failed economy.

185 - Re genuine request for elaboration.
Just a gut feeling. My gut tells me that the uncertainty of the fiscal cliff coupled with the uncertainty of sequestration caused a lot of pull-back in the private economy and slow-down in defense spending in 4Q 2012. I don't think it bounces back in any big way, but I'd expect some bounce due to slightly decreased uncertainty, with slow growth in 1Q 2013.
That's short term, of course. In the long term, WE'RE BONED.

I can't speak for Sven,
But the bailout of Blue states is going to subtly happen through things like "Medicaid expansion" and "High Speed Rail."
We're already seeing this. California wants to hand out healthcare to everyone, it can't afford it, so the Federal government steps in and offers to pick up the "expansion tab" for 4 years (or in Government speak: Forever really, we're just lying about the limits.)
Do I think Obummer's going to jump down and say "Bam, here's 20 billion to you blue state, and 20 billion to you!" No, but he's going to use the federal budget to plug holes in states budgets, which is just f'ing wrong.

"Zimbabwe"-related stuff won't work, because people have heard "Zimbabwe" too many times. An obscure slur would work best. The media loves to teach its fans what's racist--and people love to be told what's racist. Remember "macaca."
So, pick one. There are lists of all the world's slurs on internet, because the internet is helpful. Take one off a list, make sure it fits, and weld it to an economic term. Then say that shit a million times.
Eventually, the OUTRAGE!d will mention your idea. Right now, you don't even have that. Only OUTRAGE! can get conservative words (e.g., "death panels") through the media's filter, and you haven't generated any OUTRAGE!. People have no idea (except their own lying-eyes idea, which doesn't count, because they can't join it) that the world is econo-boned--or that anyone admits it's boned.
Tell them.
And laugh.

Yes, this country would be much better off if we followed libertarian-conservative views. Happy to promote them. Quite confident I have never promoted any anarchist viewpoints. I much prefer a government that is more libertarian, particularly with respect to the private sector. And I much prefer a populace that is conservative with conservative values and respect for all forms of life. And I think the red states are basically leading the way. Obviously the federal government has not followed this path. But I ultimately think that the success of the red states, the failure of the blue states will cause the federal government to change its ways. We will have a lot to undo, but it can be done.

Of course, that would cause more GDP contraction in the short term because the government is a large chunk of GDP, but it is the most worthless chunk.
I doubt we'd see more than one quarter of continued decline once that started. Most people have no idea just how big a drag this administration is putting on the economy, or government in general.
F'rinstance, by the time one tax dollar manages to make it's way back into the economy, it has already lost some 40% of its value. Add in the increasing cost of compliance of tens of thousands of new and largely unnecessary regulations (look at the price of groceries since ethanol was mandated) and you'll start to see the tip of the iceberg that the MFM refuses to tell you about.

As for bailing out California, you guys have been doing that for years. Bush bailed out our ERs, going broke thanks to illegal aliens, and we borrowed $10B so far for unemployment.
Thanks!

It isn't about the chickens. It's about the inhumanity of it, the depravity. You're okay with a spectacle that features a fight to the death and excites bloodlust in spectators? It's cruel, vicious, and mean, just plain wrong on every level, and degrades all who participate in it. And hey, if you're okay with roosters killing each other for public enjoyment, how about dog fighting? Is that okay? They're just dogs, after all.
And before you say 'boxing', stop right there. I've boxed (as an amateur). It is a sport, and it ain't called the 'sweet science' for nothing.

That being said, it's also fair to say that this is no long a recovery, but is simply a "new normal"... the stagnant staggering clusterf*** of a miserable failed economy.

They always revise "down", never "up". That -0.1% will drop to a -0.5% when they revise later on.
2012 Q4 retail sales were "disappointing" and barely budged over 2011. Just in my neighborhood half of the restaruants have closed in the past month, and these are long time ones, not new ones, and no new ones have opened. Hell, even the Hooters in town closed, and when sleezy skanks in tank tops and too small shorts can't sell warm beer and mediocre wings, the economy is in the shitter and not getting better.
