Of Course: Hollywood Remaking Leslie Nielson Classic "The Naked Gun" with... Ed Helms
— Ace

Or at least they're "eyeing" Ed Helms.

I like Ed Helms, but this is just Healthcare.gov: The Movie.

First of all, this movie is going to be awful. Obviously. I won't elaborate.

Second of all, Leslie Nielson wasn't a comic actor. He was a character actor known for playing straight-faced authority figures in melodramas. They cast Leslie Nielson in Airplane because they wanted him to deliver lines in his usual melodramatic serious way, but saying ridiculous things.

And then the cast cheeseball "dramatic" actors like George Kennedy and Ricardo Montalban around him. Then they cast people who couldn't act, like O.J. Simpson and Priscilla Presley. Because a movie like this, if it were played straight, would have that sort of a cast.

Casting Ed Helms -- a comic actor -- in the role is just wrong. Helms plays comedy like a comedy actor. They should be going for a melodramatic serious actor like Bruce Greenwood, or a comic actor that plays comedy deadpan, like Gary Cole.*

But this is part of the Stupid of Hollywood. People don't know offhand, who those actors are (though they know them and like them). People have heard of Ed Helms, and they remember he was in a big comedy trilogy, The Hangover.

So even though Ed Helms isn't a box office draw, we'll cast him in this movie, because then people will know it's supposed to be funny. If we cast Gary Cole, people won't know it's supposed to be funny.

I like Ed Helms -- but he's not Frank Drebin.

Hey why not just cast Jim Carrey? He's wild and crazy and people know he's supposed to be funny. Oh wait, it's because no one likes Jim Carrey anymore. Forget I mentioned it.

Third of all, this movie is going to be awful, seriously. Obviously. Although The Naked Gun itself was very funny, the sequel was very disappointing, and the third one flat-out stunk.

This Airplane-style humor is hard to do. It does get repetitive. It's hard to sustain for 90 minutes. Even the Airplane guys themselves have struggled to make funny movies using this sort of joke -- for every decent Airplane-style movie they made, they turned out two or three clunkers.

And so now a bunch of people who aren't terribly funny -- like the sort of people who write the Scary Movie movies -- are going to ripoff a lot of old Airplane and Naked Gun jokes and add their own Naked Gun style jokes. And they'll all be awful.**

But they're now determined to remake every single movie that earned at least $50 million in the past 30 years, so of course, they had to dig up the corpse of The Naked Gun and violate it.

* Actually, Ben Affleck would make a much better Frank Drebin than he would a Bruce Wayne.

** Actually, the article names the writers:

The studio has hired the team behind Night At The Museum and Reno 911, Thomas Lennon and R Ben Garant, to pen a screenplay for the new movie.

Yeah okay, they're not bad, but they don't do Airplane jokes.

14 Yeah, a copy of a copy of a copy pretty much guarantees an illegible mess. Unless they do something sort of novel - like was done with the Keaton/Batman switchover to the Dark Knight - it almost has to suck. I just don't see how you do that with a comedy redo.

Think Groundhog Day but with an alien invasion and Tom Cruise dies every day. So you can watch Tom Cruise die a lot. Before the wtf why would you make Groundhog Day but with an alien invasion Hollywood has no creative ideas, you're right, but for a different reason. It's based on a Japanese book called All You Need Is Kill.

Not true.

Is the world ready for a sequel to Twins? Universal and Montecito Picture Co. are hoping to develop a doozy of a follow-up to the 1988 hit comedy that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito that would reunite the two stars. But wait, thereÂ’s a twist: In the new scenario, Eddie Murphy would act as a third brother. Titled Triplets, the story would see Schwarzenegger and DeVito as brothers Julius and Vincent, conceived experimentally, who discover they have third sibling.

Some are suggesting GSP might be showing signs of brain damage. GSP, who is extremely bright and well-spoken, has said some odd things in the past, including talk of possible alien abductions and "missing time".

106 *does the Snoopy happy dance of OT-ness*

Went to lunch with a friend at a Chinese buffet place.  Good fun and fun chatting.  Then we got to the fortune cookies.  Mine read - "Your efforts in a critical area will soon be rewarded."

Told friend that I had to go buy Christmas presents and we parted ways.  So stop at Everyday Gourmet in Ridgeland.  Mom had wanted me to see if they had new Gail Pittman items.  So happy with food walk in say hi to the blond woman in the red sweater and go directly to where the Pittman ceramics are and pick out items for my Mom and SIL.

Go up to the cashier.  Chatting with her and another customer.  As she is ringing up my purchases she asks if I want Gail to sign them.  *pause*  I stutter out in a small voice 'please.'  So she calls out, "Gail can you sign these?"

So I turn to see who she is talking to, it's the blond woman I had walked past when entering the store.  Gail turns to us and says yes she can because I am smiling.  Its like totally wow and she asks for my Mom and SIL's names, I tell her, and she signs them with their names.  That is when I remember the fortune cookie and show it to her and cashier.  We all laugh.

As soon as I got out of the store called Mom.  She is absolutely tickled pink about the news and starts saying she will pay me for it.  I say you don't have to.  Usual tussle but I don't care if she does or doesn't.  I made her day and that is all that matters.  Even if I win the Mega Millions tonight, it will not equal how I am feeling right now.

183 The real problem with Hollywood is summed up by my brother's critique of any creative endeavor I've ever undertaken (and the reason he's not a beta reader for my book, despite him being the best resource I'd have)- "It's derivative." Now, his point is this (and it's a good one): EVERYTHING is "derivative." You didn't come up with that idea in a vacuum. So *since* it's derivative, you have two (good) choices you can make. Embrace the fact it's derivative, and pepper liberally with "fan-service" jokes, or go about still telling the best story you can, ignoring that you're derivative (as best you can) and hope to be judged on your own merits. Hollywood takes the two opposite options- they either accept that they're derivative (remakes) but try to "put their own spin" (which is to say- change things to the point they may as well not be the same story) on it, or they reject that they're "derivative" and make stupid choices just to prove how "original" they are.

185 The faster George Lucas' prediction of a series of multimillion dollar movies flopping and causing Hollywood to implode comes true, the bettermovies will be creatively. --- George may have been onto something, but he doesn't have a lot of room to talk. Movie theater employees had to deal with enough of his prima-donna bullshit when the prequel trilogy came out that he has lost the ability to trash anyone in Hollywood for out-of-touch bullshit.

Some in Hollywood see this, hence the rash of remakes from more innocent times.  Hollywood is a slowly dying entity, and they know.

This is why    my    film    library   is almost entirely action movies.      Any good action movie is going to have elements of comedy and elements of drama to give it some heart and soul (in addition to the 'splodey and T and A).   Same with fantasy and/or sci-fi, though the latter    is    usually dripping with so much leftwing propaganda that I can't stand    it.   See "Avatar" for exhibit A.

261 Actually, Ben Affleck would make a much better Frank Drebin than he would a Bruce Wayne.

And he wouldn't even understand why.

Now I think I know how the old people felt when they heard Tiffany cover Tommy James and the Shondells when I was kid.

265 What made  "Airplane" so funny was talking about it after seeing it.  There were so many one-liners and  back-staging humor that it was always fun to either see it again, or try to re-create it from memory.  "Airplane" in it's original  filming is a classic that  will never be able to be re-made  with the same  affect.

269 The live-action Tick TV show was OK, but the cartoon was much funnier to me.

It's a shame that it lasted only one or two seasons; that, Reboot, and Beast Wars were the only cartoons worth a damn in the 90's...

270 267 Posted by: garrett at December 13, 2013 03:24 PM (OIl4c) I'm still trying to figure out who would play Arthur and who would play DeflatorMouse. --- Reuse the cast from the live-action TV show with Warburton. Der Fliedermaus and American Maid are Batmanuel and Captain Liberty in that version, IIRC, due to copyright issues.

274 Haven't had a chance to read very far into the comments, but has anyone mentioned that The Naked Gun was a continuation of a much, much funnier TV show called Police Squad!? It was a parody of all the previous cop shows, most pointedly M Squad, but with a Quinn Martin-type structure and opening. The theme was in fact a sideways version of M Squad's.

One running gag was that the Special Guest Star got killed in the opening credits. John Belushi was one of these guests, but his opening never ran, because he died (as I recall) the day before it was to air.

Another funny thing about the opening credits: Abe Lincoln is shown at Ford's Theater getting shot at. He stands up, wheels around, takes a stance and fires back!

I had to go see it again because the theater was packed the first time, and the laughter was so loud I missed half the dialogue.  I've never seen an audience reaction like that to a comedy, before or since.  Just raucous, sustained laughter.

@182 I think I might have to deal violently with the responsible parties if there were to be a remake of The Princess Bride. That's one IP that needs to stay as is, in all its pristine glory.

Now that I've said that, there will probably be a raunchy-as-all-hell remake with Westley being a drunkard, Buttercup being a whore, and Inigo Montoya talking like 50 Cent.
---------------

That one's based on a book (by William Goldman), so any remake would probably stay at least marginally true to the original...

284 AtC: "I love how he portrayed Satan in that. The whistling as he's dragging Keanu off is grand."

Yep. Fantastic take. I've never seen Satan as all quirky, cocksure, reticent, and freaking evil in the same scene. Brilliantly done. Whenever I think of Satan, it's no longer a deviled ham silhouette. It's a tattooed orderly with tarry feet.

285 You'll never hear me say this again and if you try to pin this quote on me I will declare jihad on you, but Alec Baldwin does a good deadpan. He'd actually be perfect for the role. Or maybe the guy who plays Ron Swanson, Nick Offerman.

288 Hollywood is remaking these movies for a couple of basic reasons
1: They're terrified of anything new because they aren't making the money they used to.
2: The market is international now, so they are recycling old blockbusters made to get them to places like Bangkok and South Africa.
And yeah, I liked the Constantine movie, even if it had virtually nothing to do with the comic book.

290 Unfortunately, he just passed away, but Dennis Farina would have made a great Drebin. He was after all a real Chicago detective before turning to acting.

303 Sorry, but I can't stand Ed Helms. In anything. Having said that ... another remake? Really?! Have you just completely run out of ideas and given up? If it's not a remake (or a reboot, or a "re-imagining"), then it's a sequel or an old TV show brought to the big screen. It's rare that I can find even one movie per year that I'd pay to see in a theater.
