Every time I see @MileyCyrus slap that black woman's butt, I think about the way that enslaved blacks were whipped for white entertainment.
— Aura Bogado (@aurabogado) August 26, 2013
And then there is this bitter racialist.
1) Macklemore won best hip hop music video for his popular single ‘Can’t Hold Us’ over Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky among others. He also won best song with a social message for ‘Same Love’, a ballad in support of same-sex marriage that reflects on the relationship between his queer uncles. And yes, while ‘Same Love’ is beautiful, it has received attention and sold albums mainly because Macklemore is a white dude. Many young, queer women who are artists of color—like Angel Haze and Azealia Banks—have stepped into the spotlight over the past couple years. It’s difficult to shine when you’re in always in the white, heterosexual man’s shadow.2) Miley Cyrus’s minstrel show ‘Can’t Stop’ filled the room with the sounds and sights of the cultural appropriation of working class Black culture. Her music video, which has been criticized for using Black women’s bodies (her backup dancers) as accessories for white profit by major culture blogs on the internet, proves once again that she needs a racial justice consultant. She finished her on-stage performance by triggering me (and from the looks of it, the Smith family) by “dancing” with rape anthemist, Robin Thicke.
3) Justin Timberlake, who has been busy whitewashing R&B for over a decade, walked away from the VMAs with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Video Award as well as the top honor of the evening...
So, it's racist if Black People Don't Win at the VMAs. And also, it appears black people have some degree of ownership over R&B, such that anyone white who works in that medium is "whitewashing" it and stealing from the black man.
People shouldn't think this way, but they do. That's what makes them racist. They have little reason for valuing themselves apart from their race, and therefore they view everything in terms of Stuff My Race Made, rather than Things I Myself Made, which is of course what actually matters.
It is strange and horrifying to see that those who are the most stridently "anti-racist" are in fact those most infected with racism. "This belongs to our tribe. We, The Collective Based Upon Our Slightly-More-Similar DNA, have collective ownership rights to this."
Noah Rothman found another example of this idiocy at Vulture magazine, perpetrated by some no-account named Jody Rosen.
“[T]he shock that Cyrus was peddling wasn’t sex. It was all about race,” Rosen wrote, priming his readers for maximum shock.“Cyrus has spent a lot of time recently toying with racial imagery,” he adds, revealing the disturbing fact that he sees racial imagery everywhere.
“Cyrus twerking her way through the video for her big hit ‘We Can’t Stop,’ professing her love for ‘hood music,’ and claiming spiritual affinity with Lil’ Kim,” Rosen continues. “Last night, as Cyrus stalked the stage, mugging and twerking, and paused to spank and simulate analingus upon the ass of a thickly set African-American backup dancer.”
It's interesting that she (or he, I don't know) is fixated on the racial angle and overlooking the somewhat more present angle of "Lesbian Analingus Pantomime for Tweeners." Oh and by the way, it was performed on a bear.
But of course no judgments on that.
If you’re keeping score, Cyrus is “toying with racial imagery” by virtue of her being a fan of and collaborating with African-American artists and by performing hyper-sexualized dancing with one of her black backup dancers. But this workmanlike presentation of damming evidence continues:“Her act tipped over into what we may as well just call racism: a minstrel show routine whose ghoulishness was heightened by Cyrus’s madcap charisma, and by the dark beauty of “We Can’t Stop” — by a good distance, the most powerful pop hit of 2013,” Rosen adds.
By the way I've never heard that song. I'm just saying this so those of you thinking "I've never heard that song" know that you're not alone.
Rothman analyzes this through a prism similar to one I've suggested, the notion of the tribal shibboleth, the exchange of passwords and countersigns indicating allegiance to a tribe or cult.
And you can read that take at the link. However, it occurs to me that another useful analogy is to the idea of connoisseurship. These three sad mugs are all connoisseurs of Racism You Guys..
What is the point of connoisseurship? Well, as a primary matter, to develop a refined, cultured, and sensitive palate for detecting the most subtle effects of a thing. The wine connoisseur trains himself to pick out "smoky notes" and "hints of blackberry" and wines that profited from "good ash in the soil."
Of course connoisseurship is not restricted to the physical sense of taste; art connoisseurs are fond of saying things like "It's the colors that aren't present that really stand out!"
And connoisseurs of music are given to saying things as "What wonderful silences are in this piece, where you can simply enjoy the room's tone, the vibrations and echoes in the walls themselves."
The connoisseur is trained to sense things that no one else can sense, or, at least, no one but an elite cadre of dedicated Detectors of the Subtle and Sublime.
The secondary value of connoisseurship is, of course, impressing other connoisseurs, intimidating non-connoisseurs, and, by these effects, gaining a Social Advantage which maximizes one's chances for financial and sexual success.
I actually think the secondary value is really the primary one but let's be generous and just say it's a nice unintended consequence.
Now maybe I was goofing on connoisseurship a little bit there, but I have to admit, I'd like to pick up that kind of skill. So long as it does not take a great deal of time and effort, I mean.
But of course it would take that. One can fake these things, as one can fake most things, but there's nothing more embarrassing than a fake connoisseur outed as a poser.
I am suggesting, of course, that people of little talent and little liking of hard work and training have created a new connoisseurship, a connoisseurship rather easily achieved, requiring, as it does, so very little practice and so very little reading; they have created a connoisseurship of Racism, savoring (or so they say) each note so delicate as to be imperceptible to the proletarians whose sense are too unrefined to detect anything but the boldest, most obvious flavors.
And by demonstrating their connoisseurship of racism, they gain a social advantage, that of impressing the other would-be racist connoisseurs, and the various stooges and goons stupid enough to be impressed by this shabby parlor trick.
And, as with any fake connoisseur, as with any bluffer, they gain the most when they make the most ludicrous claims: "I can virtually taste the post-war global depression in this wine; there's a character in the sweat of the grape-stompers that imparts to it a sadness that is almost transcendent."
For connoisseurs, noting that a wine has a chocolate aftertaste is rather elementary and crude. No, to really impress people -- or to really bluff -- you have to really commit to it and claim that your tastes are so refined that they can perceive flavors which exist only on an atomic level:
"Mmm.. those d-orbital electrons are really a kick, aren't they? The complexity of flavors he's managed to achieve while working within the confines of just a few electron states is simply magnificent."
And so it is with the Connoisseurs of Racism.
By Jove I Think He's Got It! @empireofjeff is now expert in the New Connoisseurship:
The peanut was invented by George Washington Carver, a known black man.I go to the store these days, and what do I see? Cans of Planter's peanuts. You know where Planters do their business?
On plantations. When I pop the top on that can of peanuts, that hiss of air sounds to me like the sharp intake of breath made by an enslaved black, as he clings to the whipping post and bears down on the pain the lash inflicts on his tortured flesh; rebelling in the only way he knows how - by denying his cruel overseer the music of his screams.

In The Gondoliers, there is a lyric reading, "when everybody's somebody, then nobody's anybody!" Just the same, when everything's "raycisss!", then nothing is racist.
If nothing else, at least the complete devaluation* of the racism card will be a worthwhile legacy of the dog-eating crackhead's term in office

This has been one of the things taht has annoyed me for years. Have you ever noticed when a new black music star jumps onto the scene, he or she is always - ALWAYS -- placed in the R&B section? Always. It doesn't matter if their music isn't remotely "rhythm and blues." It's because "black people sing R&B" while "white people sing pop."
PISSES. ME. OFF. Talk about stereotyping!

I'd also note this: Several of the authors seem mad because whites have taken over "traditionally African-American" categories or some such.
That's just math.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, and so, if someone does something popular (like R&B or Hip hop) people will start to emulate it, and because there are more white people to emulate it than there are blacks, there's probably a higher chance that one of them will be good.
Kinda like the game Risk, where one side rolls more dice than the other. That person has a better chance of high numbers.

This stuff slays me. White people doing rap and R&B is a compliment to Black culture, not a ripoff! Sheesh. White audiences and black audiences love this music, why the heck should white artists NOT want to do the kinds of music people of all races want to hear and will pay for? (I myself was a serious funk/R&B/disco fan in the 70s, never listened to the Eagles or Cheap Trick or Springsteen or any of those white rock bands. My first concert was The Isley Brothers.) Miley Cyrus is trying to act black because she thinks black people are cool. Why is it always deemed a "minstrel show"? Macklemore has black singers on all of his songs and uses black musicians. His video WAS the best this year, it was very inventive besides being a good song. Black rappers really don't put much effort into their videos, except for Kanye.
Jay-Z has done shows all summer with Timberlake. Does that make Jay-Z a minstrel or a race traitor? Anyone wanna say that to his face??
Good grief.

By the way I've never heard that song. I'm just saying this so those of you thinking "I've never heard that song" know that you're not alone.
I have heard it, but didn't know who was to blame for it until last night. It is a fairly unremarkable piece of drivel about how the singer and her friends are gonna party and nobody can tell them not to, like, 'cause it is their body and stuff. It brings back unpleasant memories of living next to a frat house and a few hundred yards away from a Mexican dance-hall (until there was a shooting and it was closed down) back in my grad school days.
Also, Miss Cyrus does have a really raspy, unpleasant voice, like folks were saying.

It explains the obsession some cable newsies have of constantly beating that drum. And they all seem to be white. or whitish.
Only thing is, wine can be made again and again, art can be created with a new and unique value, but racism loses by repetitive declamation.

And here I used to think racial justice and harmony were being advanced by white artists like Timberlake who pay homage to black music, and Daft Punk and Robin Thicke using Pharell Williams in their songs. Hall and Oates did "blue eyed soul" 30 years ago and when I go see them I see plenty of black people in the audience. I saw Stevie Wonder a few years ago and marveled at the integrated audience. Everyone likes R&B music that has a great beat. Doesn't Beyonce have millions of white fans? Millions of young white people like black rap music too. They don't just wait for the next Eminem album.
This is a GOOD thing!
People who argue against this are racial separatists who do not want justice and equality and harmony.

The "stealing from black artists" complaint/allegation/charge has been leveled for decades. I want to note that the ultra-liberal by-no-means-racist entertainment industry has completely ignored that also.
Why? My guess is that it is too profitable to do otherwise; and in the Entertainment Industry moral posturing and sanctimonius preaching definitely take the back of the bus when it comes to money.

Amanda Catherine Hein can face murder charges in Allentown, PA. She was at a sports bar and excused herself after saying she felt back pains. She vanished into the bathroom for 40 minutes. When she rejoined her three male friends she asked them to ignore the blood on her. Ms. Hein had delivered in the bathroom a baby boy and then stuffed the baby into a garbage bag before placing the body in the tank of a toilet. She and her friends stayed another hour in the pub and only later was the dead baby found as the bathroom was cleaned.

Unpacking a bit here: white actors in black-face dancing and singing in a highly ritualized manner (minstrel show routine) whose morbid fascination with death (ghoulish) was amplified by Cyrus' amusingly eccentric (madcap) natural charm (charisma).
Does that make a single bit of sense? Her eccentric charm amplified the morbid death fascination?

Miley Cyrus’s minstrel show ‘Can’t Stop’ filled the room with the sounds and sights of the cultural appropriation of working class Black culture. Her music video, which has been criticized for using Black women’s bodies (her backup dancers) as accessories for white profit by major culture blogs on the internet, proves once again that she needs a racial justice consultant.

I appreciate art connoisseurs. I had a show a few weeks ago and a very knowledgeable lady examined one of my paintings for a very long time. I approached her, introduced myself, and asked her opinion of the piece (this one: http://tinyurl.com/ljjd5tu ). She proceeded to break down, in detail, everything I was striving for in that particular painting. She was able to pinpoint artistic influences, identify the golden section compositional arrangement, and essentially follow my thinking throughout every stage of the process. She was uncanny. We talked for a long time about art and politics and life in general. I felt at a disadvantage since I was clearly getting more from her than she from me.
So yeah, connoisseurship is sometimes a very good thing. We can learn from such people. Racial connoisseurs? Not so much.

I parodied it some but I mostly intended to parody the bluffers, the duffers, the poseurs and les frimeurs.
I do think that people are too quick to denigrate any learning they themselves don't have. I think that's a natural and understandable ego-driven response, but it's not a GOOD response.
I happen to know a connoisseur. I won't say of what. I will say it's the sort of connoisseurship you guys would respect. And given he's an acknowledged leader in his field of expertise, I could never say, "Oh, he's just FAKING his refinement of taste."
He's not. I could never tell him, "Oh, that's JUST your taste." Well yes it is his taste. But not JUST his taste. There is a great deal of work involved in it.
And not to get credentialist but he's got the credentials, including from (this isn't the case but I'm trying to hide his identity) people who call him up for his opinion to evaluate their wares.
I have to think when different people keep coming to the same conclusion about his taste and ability to craft the thing he crafts, it's a real thing, and not some massive con.
That said, there is a high, high bullshit factor in much of this. And particularly in the case of Fields of Expertise that don't actually exist, like Detectin' Dog Whistles and Minstrel Shows.

well, look, I have done this an awful lot myself, but I think it's just kind of dumb to DENY that entire sectors of human learning or expertise exist at all. Like:
Psychology? Bullshit.
Art? Bullshit.
Music? Bullshit.
Theater? Bullshit.
Literature? Bullshit.
And so on. I mean it's kind of fun pose, but... eh, I don't think it's a good way to think. I think the lure of Denying Everyone Else's Abilities and Education is too strong, too comforting, too delicious, and should be resisted.
I don't know how serious you are and how much an act you're putting on (as I don't know how serious I was when I used to do this all the time), but I do think this is something that hurts conservatives, because conservatism winds up being sort of pro-philistinism and pro-know-nothingism.
At some point skepticism turns to cynicism and cynicism turns into a wholesale denial of entire swathes of learning and experience.
Anyway I'm not really ragging on you per se. As I keep saying, I've done this a lot. I still do it.
But I do think there's an ego-based temptation to sort of say "Any skill I don't have is a crap skill and maybe not really a skill at all."

I think it's a double-edged sword. From my observations, the connoisseurs become mocked and discounted when they adopt the attitude that due to their connoissuerism, that deep understanding or knowledge of a single topic, they are thus not only somehow innately better humans than the unwashed ignorants, but that they are also inherently deeply understanding or knowledgeable of all topics.

an art form.
very true, but then, medicine is an art form.
Not everything can be reduced to hard science. In many fields, there are simply too many unknowns and too many things which cannot be measured.
In such areas, we have two choices:
Do nothing at all, for we will never understand the area with a scientific level of rigor;
or at least construct a system of guesses, observed tendencies, syndromes, etc. A much "fuzzier" form of science (that's why it's soft science), but then, all actual hard science began, long ago, as soft science.
What I'm doing right now -- arguing with you -- is not a hard science but that doesn't mean it's without value.

Um, really? They really want to claim this embarrassing attention-whoring cesspool spectacle and say it represents a white artist stealing Black culture? That's what they consider "working class Black culture"? Which means that if a black person had performed that horrific little number it would have been okay and somehow not a tasteless mess? That's honestly one of the saddest things I've seen in recent memory.

The quick way to tell the difference is that the connoisseur will say things like "it takes a refined palette" where the expert says things like, "here, let me show you..."

I don't think that's it. The expert is able to do; the connoisseur is able to identify the expertise of the expert.
Being a connoisseur is an expertise of its own, but it is different than being an expert in the field of question. That doesn't mean the connoisseur is useless - he's acting as a sort of information broker.

I don't think so. I would view an expert as someone who has a great deal of knowledge, whereas a connosseuir is one who has a great deal of insight. The two are not mutually exclusive, of course, but I expect that you would find an expert to tell you about great works of art, whereas it is the connosseuir who finds the NEXT great artist.

i think another big driving factor is rejectivism. We are speaking, largely, of industries/areas of learning in which almost all of the workers are actively hostile to us, so it is natural to reject that which gives them power in a blanket way.
But that kind of rejectivism is sort of the reaction of the weak against the strong. I think rejectivism is underclass blacks' response to a dominant white culture they see as hostile to them, or at least unfair, which then leads them to reject half (or more) of the habits that create and sustain the middle class.
I think you see this in the Muslim world. The White Christian West has become good at making things, having a secular government, advancing pluralism, etc. But that's the White Christian West way; we must Reject that, and find Our Own Way.
Blanket rejectivism is often a crude tool where a scalpel is required. Reject the stupid and evil, appropriate the good and smart. But to simply write off entire categories of human learning as wisdom as Something The Other Tribe is Good At almost always results in bad outcomes.

To feed the troll a little bit. In the real world, parents have influence (respect/authority) with their children, even adult ones.
If they love their child, they will tell them, "this is a really bad idea" and even do anything within their power to influence the child to do otherwise.
The parents that don't have screwed the pooch already, either through apathy or cowardice.

You cannot write a proof to explain why the Mona Lisa's smile has fascinated onlookers for centuries. You may be able to break down the mathetmatical angles and geometries of it, but that's not a reason. That's just Leonardo's talent for capturing his subject's features on display.

whatever dude, you constantly campaign for the same proposition: You, and other mathematicians, are the only people who have Real Jobs.
You sound like Sheldon Cooper.
As you will. I don't want to continue to argue this with you, this idea that you and your cadre of mathematicians are the only people in the world engaged in worthy work.
It's a childish solipsicism and I just roll my eyes when you do it, usually, but I have to tell you, the passive-aggressive putting-down of all other people is noted.
I am a writer. Apparently what I do is shit, because Only Math Counts.

It is kind of like British Public School educated Second Lieutenants reciting Ovid or Juvenal to each other in an underground bunker and wondering how their expensive educations were supposed to prepare them for their current job. Perhaps a better analogy would be Russian intellectuals in the Gulag trading poems by Pushkin or Gorchakov to keep up each others' spirits but realizing that this skill is not going to do much to help them survive in their current circumstance.

I know. It's painful to realize this, but sometimes, people discard books.
*closes AtC's mouth, which hangs agape in disbelief*
Usually they're given away, or sold, or donated, but however it's done, people feel it necessary to clear space on their bookshelves.
Now, the good news is that this is usually done to make space for MORE books, which replace the old ones that have gone on to find new homes.

You are making a lot of assumptions. Quite possibly her parents were as surprised as the audience. The world is telling her this is a bad idea doubt her parents are going to pile on. There are parents, who when you become an adult, do not step in and shield you from the repercussions of your mistakes. Miley will either learn from this or she won't.
This is a lot like the Oprah pe**s dress debacle. You can be so powerful and overwhelming that everyone is afraid to tell you anything, including the fact that the designers sent over a dress that looks like a giant male member and you are about to wear it on the letterman program making a spectacle of yourself and when you are fat, nothing can make you look thin. Even a dress that you thought was color blocking to make you look real thin.

Im almost fifty..... and I guran-fricking-tee you if I behaved like that in public..... my mother would most definitely be yanking me off stage.
Did anyone see the Open Letter to my Daughter about Miley Cyrus out there? It's from a mom's blog:
"Yes, this is what happens when you constantly hear everything you do is awesome. This is what happens when people fawn over your every Tweet and Instagram photo. This is what happens when no responsible adult has ever said the word “no,” made you change your clothes before leaving the house, or never spanked your butt for deliberate defiance.
"If you ever even consider doing something like that, I promise you that I will run up and twerk so you will see how ridiculous twerking looks. I will duct tape your mouth shut so your tongue doesn’t hangout like an overheated hound dog. I will smack any male whom you decide to smash against his pelvis – after I first knock you on your butt for forgetting how a lady acts in public.
"Why would I do that? Because I love you and I want you to respect yourself. Miley Cyrus is not edgy or cool or sexy. SheÂ’s a desperate girl screaming for attention: Notice me."

It's like the old joke where the mathematician only needs pen, paper and a wastebasket and the philosopher only needs pen and paper.
Posted by: AmishDude at August 27, 2013 02:20 PM (T0NGe)"
In the real world, we have to make decisions based on incomplete information all the time. The choice is usually either act in time with the information available or wait until you have all the information and it is too late to act.
It's like the old joke about a convention where an engineer, a physicist and a mathematician stay up late in the hotel bar and then stumble up to their rooms, fall into bed but light a cigarette before falling asleep. The engineer wakes up, smells smoke, realizes what is wrong, fills the wastebasket with water, pours it on the burning bed and puts out the fire. The physicist wakes up, sees the fire, makes some calculations, goes to the sink and fills a cup with 98 ml of water, pours it on the fire and puts it out. The mathematician wakes up and sees the fire, makes some calculations, proves that the fire can be put out, rolls over and goes back to sleep and is burned to death.

The biggest cognitive dissonance I'm seeing, that has me scratching my head, are those people who are proclaiming that twerking has its roots in African tribal dance, so when blacks are twerking they are tapping into this primal, deep form of artistic expression. BUT, when skinny white popstarlets twerk, it is a crass, trashy display. Um, NO, it was always trashy; you are displaying your shaking hindquarters for men, like an animal in heat. In what way is that deeply artistic?
Obviously teh racism, it runs deep within me. I will run to the barrel now. /sarc

I once knew a woman who put herself through school to get a degree and certificate to council drug addicts. After years of effort and sacrifice she tried to find a job in the field that she had trained for only to discover that one of the requirements for that position is that you have been addicted at some point in your life and have overcome that addiction. During the years that she had worked and studied and denied gratification in order to earn her degree, nobody had ever pointed out this basic fact.
Now I realize that she could certainly be faulted for not having done enough due diligence before the fact, but it does seem like kind of a cruel joke that reflected that the attitude of academics towards their students is not real different than the attitude of workers in a meat packing plant towards the animals that arrive each day.
