Oh Man I Gotta Start Waching Lena Dunham's Girls
— Ace

Riveting stuff.

Responding last year to viewers who denounced the lack of racial diversity on HBO's Girls, its creator and star, Lena Dunham, told NPR, "I take that criticism very seriously... As much as I can say [writing four white main characters] was an accident, it was only later as the criticism came out, I thought, 'I hear this and I want to respond to it." She did just that in Sunday night's episode, choosing not only to cast African-American Community star Donald Glover as her character Hannah Horvath's new boyfriend, but also to address the issue of race as it manifests itself in their relationship.

Tell me more.

Glover's Sandy made his first appearance in the Season 2 premiere. A handsome, easygoing, responsible law student who doesn't go in for the awkward sex and excruciating mind games of Hannah's most recent ex, Adam, he has only one flaw (or what passes for a flaw among 20-somethings in Brooklyn): He's a Republican. His political orientation barely comes up in the premiere, but Hannah's roommate, Elijah, thrusts it to the fore in Sunday's episode, picking a fight with Sandy in the bathroom over his presumed opposition to same-sex marriage. Before the credits roll, Hannah is using his soft-spoken conservatism as an excuse to break up with him—although, in true Girls fashion, what's really bothering her is his dislike of a personal essay she's given to him to read.

Do they have a word for "too exciting"? Besides "too exciting," I mean. Because, I need that word to explain what I'm feeling right now.


It's in the midst of their final argument that Hannah and Sandy find themselves yelling at each other about race. "I also would love to know how you feel about the fact that two out of three people on death row are black men," she says.

This is amazing.

"Wow, Hannah. I didn't know that. Thank you for enlightening me that things are tougher for minorities," he shoots back.

It gets better. They soon deal with the issue of "exoticizing."

Soon, he's mocking her for exoticizing him—"'Oh, I'm a white girl and I moved to New York and I'm having a great time and I got a fixed gear bike and I'm gonna date a black guy and we're gonna go to a dangerous part of town,'" he scoffs. "And then they can't deal with who I am"—and she's feebly turning around the accusation on him. "The joke's on you, because you know what? I never thought about the fact that you were black once," Hannah says when it's clear the breakup is really happening, despite the fact that she's the one who introduced race into the conversation. "That's insane." Sandy tells her. "You should, because that's what I am." By the time he asks Hannah to leave, both have admitted they don't feel good about what they've said to each other. The viewer at home, witnessing such shrewdly observed yet ultimately unresolved racial and political tension, is bound to feel just as rattled.

I feel rattled just reading it! I felt the rattles all the way down in my man-box.

Holy crap. Holy crap. I can't believe I haven't been watching.

Just one question: If I put this program on, is there any danger of my television exploding? Like, are we sure that all tv's are able to handle this much power and excitement?

Is it only newer tvs that can handle the show? Do I need a special converter?

If I watch on an 3D TV, will it literally kill me?

I need answers to these questions. And I need to watch HBO's Girls.

It's not entertainment.

It's HBO.

[Update JohnE.] As if you needed any more reasons to drop everything and start watching this show, there's this too:

I didn't really understand how often Lena Dunham was nude on screen, or how often she did sex-scenes. If you take that in with the sex scene between her parents, what you have is one of the most democratic--and everyhuman--depictions of sex to ever exist in pop culture. The more I thought about this, the more important it became to me.

8 Slightly off topic:

Recipe: Bachelor Chow by CozMark
Ingredients
1 lb bacon
1 lb ham (steak)
1 lb sausage (preferably with jalapeno)
1 lb dried beans (I prefer black, like my assault weapons)
2 cans chicken broth
1 can diced tomatoes (preferably with chipotle,green chili, some sorta pepper)
1 tbsp black pepper
3 tbsp dried parsley
1 white onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, chopped
2 cups rice (I prefer brown, like my women)
1 bottle good beer (like Shiner Bock or Guiness) DO NOT USE AMERICAN SWILL PISS WATER LIKE BUD OR MILLER

Beans: boil them for 3-4 minutes, cover and remove from heat for 1 to 1 1/2 hours - OR- soak overnight
Bacon: MAKE THE BACON until it's crispy crunchy, eat half (optional) and chop up the rest.
Sausage: Cook the sausage and dice it up. Dice the ham too. Small pieces.
Rice: Cook the rice but NOT in the crockpot.
Drain the beans
Put it all into a 4 qt. crockpot/slow cooker. Pour in the beer until it's right below the rim, slam the rest, throw empty bottle against wall. Cook on HIGH for 4 hours and then low for 2 hours. Serve over rice (that you did NOT put into the crockpot)

104 I watched the episode and watch the show. She asks him to read her fiction, he criticizes it, and due to her innate insecurity, this is when she questions his politics via-a-vis his face. As with most of her situations, Dunham is revealed to be the insecure and/or immature moron, and in the process, she subtly sends up the myopia and parochialism of her Oberlin beginnings. His character is the most mature and intelligent of any on the show. I realize that her success coupled with her Obama ad has been unnerving, but I have been to the heart of the enemy "Girls" and that is my report.

The Obama video is unforgiveable, and I don't have HBO. Hence, I've never seen Girls.

That being said, I watched her movie, Tiny Furniture, and enjoyed it as some messed-up character study of people who are completely far-removed from my moral sphere. For instance, the mother castigates the daughter for letting a boy stay in their apartment when the daughter "isn't even sleeping with him!"  And in the movie, she's fodder for a creep who pulls a "pump-and-dump" on her in a truly sad scene. How terrible would it be to have a "love" scene in your movie where the character loosely based on your own life is casually used and cast aside? She must have had a certain level of self-knowledge to write that, which makes it pitiable.

There was something inherently... fascinating about the film. I didn't sympathize with anyone in the film, but I still thought it was interesting. Just like how most of the characters in "Kids" are execrable, but the movie is interesting.

I wouldn't mind a show with an intelligent black Republican so I'll withhold judgment. She probably had no other choice but to have left-wing politics given her parents and environment, and maybe there will be a flicker of sentience years down the line.

All I could think was: 

1)  Every kid in the class knows what's what.  You've just indoctrined them to be afraid to point out something obvious.

They relish the double standard enough they don't care I think.  The other thing is combat arms work is hard, and it is a high impact lifestyle even in peacetime.  I got hurt bad enough my first term was my only term b/c of the drawdown.

I ran a lot prior to service and it kicked my at peak 162 pound high% muscle body up enough there were weekends I went to my bathtub drank some schnapps and slept for 18 hours.

My point is, there are plenty of men who can't hang and I've known women who barely meet the passing male standard but my Tow Gunners' Ruck doesn't check your crotch for what it weighs.

380 Eh, what Hoke Malokey said. I was very pleasantly surprised by the characterization of the Republican character. And the write-up Ace quotes from totally misses the point, the dynamic and the humor of the scene.

It's clear if you actually watch it (as opposed to relying on the description above) that most of what her character says in this scene is BS (and we're meant to see it as BS). The argument actually isn't about race or politics-- the trigger is her hurt vanity (he criticizes her writing). And in the context of the scene, the liberal talking-points she spouts appear especially glib, empty, silly. The Republican character clearly appears (and is meant to appear) as the rational & sane one here.

I actually like this show. Dunham is as (or much more) brutal on her character, and the female characters in general, as/ than the men. In ways that (I must confess) I sometimes relate to, looking back at my foolish youth.

Believe me, I have every reason to dislike Dunham (especially after that cringeworthy Obama ad), but I like her show. The worst and most hateful thing about it is the hype-- and e.g. write-ups like the one above that make much more of it than is there (e.g. strive to find some deep political significance), and thus miss what is there, what's charmingly and insightfully self-deprecating about it.

386 HBO has strong credentials. The Wire, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Band of Brothers, John Adams, The Larry David Show, are as fine as anything ever to air on TV. Barbarians at the Gate, Path to War, The Pacific, Flight of the Conchords, Girls, Rome, Deadwood, Extras, Angels in America, From Earth to the Moon, Veep, The Corrner, Luck. It's a little strange how Bill Maher and now Dunham makes people so emphatic. Lael is correct n Girls. Dunham may be your worst nightmare, but it doesn't really do to read about her show and then create a fiction about what she is conveying. Ace's riff is funny but it also reeks of the wounded conservative bemoaning being left it of pop culture and slashing wildly at his cooler tormentors. Does Dunham know she has written a skewering of knee-jerk urban lefty groupthink, as well as a send up of her character's narcissism? Of course. Does that in any way comport with Ace's review of some things he read about the show? Nope.

Oh the woman who made the initial report wound up hiding in a bush and left her team shorthanded and was reprimanded.

I know plenty of women who are far better soldiers with a lot more and harder stick time than I have.

My wife is one of them.  She has a nice little device on her chest called a Combat Action Badge that means a lot more in the scheme of things than any EIB or such.  Psychologically what the infantry has to do is hard, and it impacts women a little differently than men from what the MPs I know say.

The reprimanded Caracal female broke because she couldn't fire on the youngsters they had just been handing out water to, and she broke.

I am not saying I am better, or that she sucks, or that it means the women have no role there I am however saying that that break in the line impacted mission force protection profile and cost dead.

I am not really in love with cavalierly gambling lives of men and women I love and revere many of whom that relationship is personal so feminists who are not ever in harm's way get to feel 'special."

Look, I have no doubt that Dunham is an Obama fan. But-- just speculating here-- I wouldn't be surprised if some part of her motivation in making the Obama ad was to prove her political bona fides (as a progressive liberal Democrat), and thus immunize herself (and her show) from political criticism from the left-- e.g. for daring to provide a positive (or not totally evil) portrayal of a Republican, and a black Republican at that (he's also shown to be non-homophobic). I assume much of the writing and maybe shooting of this season's eps was in the can before she did the Obama ad.

After all, every liberal knows Republicans are racist bigots! In her interviews (and in the Obama ad), Dunham assures everyone that, of course, she's on the political good side and has all the correct opinions.

But that may give her more artistic license to mock and puncture the foibles and self-delusions of the (liberal) characters on her show.

I do really like some of these characters, and give some of these shows credit for that. (Though yes, it is a little like being grateful for crumbs.)

Another good character I can think of was Claire Fisher's Republican boyfriend.

It does seem silly of me to defend Dunham here. But I think it's worthwhile to credit (or at least be fair-minded toward) TV shows that-- whatever their faults-- go against the grain in portraying smart, likable, "cool" Republican, conservative, or right-wing libertarian characters. I'd think Ace of all people-- who for good reason is so aware of and engaged by the issue of pop culture's political influence-- might be a little less knee-jerk hostile to this aspect of Dunham's show.
