On Healthcare Reform The GOP Needs To Embrace The Fierce Urgency Of Shutting Up
— DrewM

Each day seems to bring a new polling low for Obama and a new disaster for ObamaCare. The GOP is seeing a corresponding rise in the polls. From this morning's NRO Morning Jolt.

"Loyalty prevails among partisans, but among independents, 42 percent trust the Democratic Party more when it comes to handling healthcare compared with 58 percent who trust the Republican Party more."

Unfortunately some will see this is as a signal the GOP needs to offer an alternative approach to ObamaCare. People who publicly advocate this course of action should be locked in a basement until after the 2014 elections.

The public isn't suddenly enamored of the GOP, they just really hate Obama and the Democrats at the moment. As soon as you start offering detailed examples of what the GOP would do you make the conversation about which approach is better. You invite people to make a choice. And just because they really don't like the Democrats approach doesn't mean they will like the GOP's.

More to the point, why in the world would you give the Democrats an out on this stuff? Right now the conversation is only about how the Democrats have lied and made a hash out of a system, that while imperfect (though it looks better now than ever), seemed to work for most people.

One reason opposition to ObamaCare didn't really kick into high gear until now is the damage was theoretical. Democrats could talk about keeping people on insurance until 26 and outlawing pre-existing conditions and on and on. All opponents could offer was projections that most people didn't follow or really understand (I'm talking about mushy-moderate/swing voter types). These low information voters could just write it off to "partisian bickering". Well, now they can't hide from it anymore.

The last thing the GOP should want to do is take the focus off the real and concrete pain people are seeing and turn the conversation back into a theoretical He says/She says political fight over competing theories of governance.

Right now the GOP is standing firmly with the maximum number of people possible. Once they start talking about hard policy options with potential downsides (as all policy choices have for some), you start to peal away part of the existing number of ObamaCare opponents/GOP supporters. Nothing tangible has been won against ObamaCare yet, this is not the time to start forcing people to begin making choices again. They are choosing to hate Obama and ObamaCare, the GOP should let them do it in peace. Don't fall into the trap that just because people don't like ObamaCare they will like the GOP alternatives.

Yes, the Democrats will say "they don't have a plan!" So? The retort is simple, "Our plan is to undo the damage that Democrats have done with their unworkable scheme to take your health insurance away from you. We will fight to make sure you are once again able to have an insurance plan you like and keep the doctors you trust. We stand with you in your desire to be free from the incompetents in Washington who can't even make a website work but think they know better than you what's right for you and your family!".

The GOP's healthcare reform message is going to have to be carried by it's nominee in 2016. There's no point in trying to have hundreds of candidates for Congress running on all sorts of different plans that will never be signed into law by Obama.

A simple message (Hope! Change!) is what resonates with people. (Remember: In 2008 Democrats ran on "reform". In fact, Obama ran against the individual mandate. Details don't matter in campaigns.)The conservative healthcare wonks and Democrats in the media will insist on seeing the GOP's "detailed plan to do better than ObamaCare". Do not listen to them. You start talking about pre vs. post tax dollars, risk pools and things that make up an actual plan and you lose people. They. Don't. Care. They want to be able to go to their doctor and feel better. Promise you will make that possible and remind them that the Democrats are taking that away. Bash the Democrats over the head with each new horror story, pass symbolic bills that Obama won't sign like Upton's, then sit down, shut up and let the Democrats stew in their own mess.

16 They ARE doing something right. Today they're moving on an energy bill: http://beta.congress.gov/bill/113th/house-bill/1900 "Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act - Amends the Natural Gas Act to direct the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to approve or deny a certificate of public convenience and necessity for a prefiled project within 12 months after receiving a complete application that is ready to be processed." 22 co-sponsors, all GOP w/ exception of Jim Matheson, Utah's sole Democrat Congresscritter. (The one Mia Love will be challenging again.) I'd like to see the GOP move on more things like this, designed to help working Americans withstand the Obamacare Economy. Every time they propose something like this they need to tie it into Obamacare. Tell Americans that since Obama won't let them repeal Obamacare, they are going to try to help Americans' household budgets via energy price reductions, tax cuts, and the like.

I think it was linked here a couple of days ago.   A story about commie totalitarianism.  At the end of the article the author said that Robert Conquest was asked whether he wanted to re-title "The Great Terror" for its re-issue, and he said, yes, call it

"I told you so, you fucking fools!"

Which should be our OCare mantra.  You didn't need to be a policy analyst to know they would bollocks this up, you just had to know that the government couldn't do this well and had no business trying anyway.

Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at November 21, 2013 06:33 AM (A0sHn)

36 anyway just goes to show when govt gets involved in healthcare it's anything but healthcare. It was never about healthcare. I mean, even if you take them at their word, health INSURANCE != healthcare. But if you look at their actions and their policies, it's about power and control. Some of the scariest things in life are healthcare related- cancer, heart attack, stroke, other major illness. But then there are those chronic or long-lasting "minor" diseases- high blood pressure, high cholesterol, ADHD, psych issues (depression, for example). The Democrats played the demagogue game perfectly and scared people into believing that "at any moment, you could face these bills without help!" Well, now we need to do the same thing: "Thanks to ObamaCare, you could find yourself unable to afford insurance just when you need it most..."

Though I would rather the push be for full repeal and have that repeated over and over,   I don't  think simply sitting on the sidelines hoping that Obamacare will hurt enough people that it will  implode,  is the best thing to do in terms of political optics.     This is a case where the GOP  really  has to   play three dimensional chess.   They must appear to be  looking for a solution that will help people  without  stopping the momentum of the crash that crush the Democrats.     Whether they are competent enough to do this is to be seen.   I have to say though,  so far so good.

And back to my first recommendation to push for repeal,   this must be accompanied  by  the fact that Obamacare is applied  unevenly  and those that are forcing people onto Obamacare are they themselves exempt.    This is the LIV  dog whistle.

65 Make the Dems vote down trying to help alleviate working Americans' financial woes caused by higher insurance rates, higher deductibles, and less work. I really like this plan. As an added level of goodness, the Republicans can then stick the knife in a little deeper by saying, "The Democrats demand more time for ObamaCare to work. Fair enough, not everything works perfectly at first. Until then..." (Or something along those lines). Then the Democrats either have three options- the safest would be just to agree to Republican plans. The other two are: * Positively affirm their support for ObamaCare by saying "no such stop-gap measures are needed" * Actively reject helping "and the middle class"

81 The retort is simple, "Our plan is to undo the damage that Democrats have done with their unworkable scheme to take your health insurance away from you. We will fight to make sure you are once again able to have an insurance plan you like and keep the doctors you trust. We stand with you in your desire to be free from the incompetents in Washington who can't even make a website work but think they know better than you what's right for you and your family!".

Can you please put this on a chip and implant it into Boehner and McConnell's brains?  This kind of statement would simply bury the Democrats.  It would resonate strongly because the pain is here and people are so pissed.  And if they're not yet, they will be.

91 Drew is right for the moment. Of course we should milk this debacle for all it's worth. However, we need to learn lessons from the democrat playbook. You get your policies passed when people are scared and confused, begging for a leader and a plan to step forward. All you need to do is figure out what that plan is. Drew is also correct in advising that republicans keep promises broad and general at this point. Everything our side says should be geared toward saving the public from the terrible mess that Obama and his incompetent party have made. But in the background, at the think tanks and the wonk blogs, a plan needs to be established that we can live with. One that relies on free market principles and the eliminations of thousands of regulations. Never let a crisis go to waste.

Yeah I keep reading (especially from desperate Liberals) that the GOP needs to offer an "alternative" to ObamaCare or JUST SHADDUP or something.

Part of the problem with health care costs in this Country is that the Government is ALREADY the largest purchaser of health care, even before BozoCare came into effect. So of course the answer must be MORE Government involvement - right?:

WRONG! Government picks winners and losers, and distorts what little of the Free Market exists in health care.

The GOP "answer" SHOULD NOT be another new Government program.

There are a few good things about ObamaCare and they should be kept, like the pre-existing condition clause. Otherwise the GOP answer should be to do as little as possible and utilize FREE MARKET reforms. PERIOD!

The G77 and China bloc led 132 poor countries in a walk out during talks about “loss and damage” compensation for the consequences of global warming that countries cannot adapt to, like Typhoon Haiyan. The countries that left claim to have the support of other coalitions of poor nations, including the Least Developed Countries, the Alliance of Small Island States and the Africa Group. Poor countries have demanded that the developed world give them $100 billion annually by 2020 to prepare for the impacts of global warming, such as heat waves and droughts. Brazil even put forward a proposal last week that would have made rich countries pay for historical greenhouse gas emissions. I saw that Movie it's called ARGO: Ahr go fuck yourself

Read that a recent survey had 1 in 5 registered voters either had their plan cancelled or knew someone who did.  Imagine what that number will balloon to when this is no longer impacting 'just' the 5% in the individual market.

From a purely cynical political standpoint the Repubs could do one thing, pass a 'fix' to O-care that requires a longer notification period of cancelled plans so those cancellations are going out in June/July next year.  Just might get a veto-overriding majority in both chambers with that one.

The Dems screwed this up with a grand all-encompassing federal level plan and the voters need to learn that the solution to all this damage is to another grand all-encompassing federal level plan from the GOP, but instead experiments in all fifty states. The only think i might suggest is that Republican governors ought to get busy crafting state level private market ideas for solutions in conjunction with doctors and insurers. Abandon the federal model entirely!

146 @110 - That's not a bug, it's a feature. If I were President, participation in this sort of extortion would be prima facie evidence that your little rathole (or in China's case, giant rathole) didn't deserve MFN, period. For that matter, participation in UN climate negotiations would be grounds for putting a giant sticky thumb on your foreign aid disbursements. The general trend, though, is favorable - while I'm quite sure that many of the west's cloistered ruling class including our own Harvardocracy would like nothing better than to cave to these clowns and shovel taxpayer money out the door, they're starting to sniff the winds of political change. The Canadians have led the charge, thank you Stephen Harper, and now the Australians have thrown over the green menace. Japan has cut its carbon-reduction target to something nugatory, the Poles have put a fence around their former environment minister and given most of his job to a gas-development guy.

148 Fierce Urgency Simple Retort (NOT Shutting Up) "Loyalty prevails among partisans, but among independents, 42 percent trust the Democratic Party more when it comes to handling healthcare compared with 58 percent who trust the Republican Party more." Don't fall into the trap that just because people don't like ObamaCare they will like the GOP alternatives. We stand with you in your desire to be free from the incompetents in Washington who can't even make a website work but think they know better than you what's right for you and your family!" -- Bravo! Now, for all that sweet talk to attract the flies as well as bees and wasps, beware hollow promises from every political quarter. You know full well which politicians masquerade their own corrupt interests as shared values. Someone trustworthy needs to be guarding the Constitution. And that isn't likely to be a virtue found in Congressional membership, let alone the White House or SCOTUS majority/Chief Justice umpire. Someone Monday posted a version of a current Republican House health care alternative Bill offered in place of ACA that had no summary yet online, but content looked like McCain had his hand in it (vitamins, mineral supplements under federal regulation).

150 Again with the 'kids' on policies until 26 is part of the problem BS?   It is a great way for young adults in beginner jobs with no employer insurance to have some coverage and the insurance industry must be thrilled to have those low risk young people in the pool.

They are not getting covered for free you know;  the parents must pay to add them to their polices, and one hopes most parents have their adult offspring reimburse them.  But in most cases it is a group policy from the parents' work with more competitive rates than the 24 year old buying an individual policy could get.   Its win/win as well as being popular with the LIV crowd.

151 Asking what you are going to replace Obamacare with is like asking someone what they would like their cancer replaced with.  They just want it out before it kills them.  They want the pain to stop.

The Republicans should say it will be impossible to undo all of the damage and return things to the status quo ante, but that they will try.  They should also say that everything Obama has done to "fix" it is both cynical and illegal.  They should point out he is still lying and misleading by offering fixes that are not fixes and by promising things he does not have the power to deliver.

153 You should be able to do things "orthogonal" to Obamacare as "patches" though.

An individual health account (think: IRA-like), for instance. Tax free in-AND-out ... unless withdrawn for non-health-issues. Inheritable, and "yours".

Adding little details like "If you shove $5000 into it, the penalties are waived..."

-> Just putting more stakes into Obamacare. That is, it doesn't "fix" any specific problems with Oc, it (a) starts a path that could be a fix, and (b) draws even more people out of the "crucial to the plan" exchanges.

156 More to the point, why in the world would you give the Democrats an out on this stuff? Right now the conversation is only about how the Democrats have lied and made a hash out of a system, that while imperfect (though it looks better now than ever), seemed to work for most people. --------------------------- Because for the dipshits that run the GOP, the urge to have their name in the press, which they figure will enhance their electability, is Job One. They need to do something. Because they think that if they're not seen to be doing something, then they might lose their bullshit jobs. So they jump in with the first stupid idea that comes to mind - to "fix" an unfixable shitpile of a law that has failure hard-coded into it from the beginning. Stupid In, Stupid Out. That's today's GOP, of which super geniuses like Gabriel Malor are staffers. Which is why their ideas always suck. Always.

157 #93 - the one Government program I have seen work even reasonably well is Australia's Medicare. It's the closest thing to free market socialised medicine you will ever see. And it works. The standard of care for all is at least adequate, the truly poor do not fall through the cracks, and with the exception of the junior doctors (hospital interns and residents, who follow their specialists' directions in any case), the government **does not** employ the doctors directly - the docs bill the government or the private insurance company on a mutually agreed schedule for services rendered.

And remind people that NOT ONE REPUBLICAN IN  EITHER CHAMBER OF CONGRESS voted for this shit sandwich.

And that the bill which ultimately passed was not even originally a healthcare bill, but some harmless piece of legislation which was taken up on the Senate floor, only to have every last bit of it - up to and including the name of the damn thing - completely gutted and replaced with the democrat Senate's version of a healthcare bill.

How did that shutdown work out for us, huh?  Remember those of us who promised O'Care was gonna be so fucking bad that all we needed to do was shut the fuck up and let them self-destruct?  No, of course you don't remember.

Leverage, to me would mean majorities in both the House and the Senate.  You still don't fucking get it do you?  We can't pass anything.  We can only block legislation.  Anything passed in the House dies in the Senate without even a consideration.  Yes, we have some popular opinion AGAINST the Dems.  But once we start pushing shutdowns we will lose any advantage.

Give us the Senate.. and please please give us Reid's nuclear option, and we'll pass repeal in both houses and dare that mother fucker Obama to veto it.

Players take on the role of Adam Lanza, the perpetrator, and text boxes prompt them to pick up a Glock pistol, move into the bedroom of LanzaÂ’s mother, Nancy, and shoot her four times, just as Lanza did in real life. They are then directed to pick up an AR-15, ammunition, and Nancy LanzaÂ’s car keys. The game then moves to Sandy Hook Elementary where players have an 11 minute time-limit to kick in classroom and bathroom doors and slaughter students and teachers as they flee or cower on the ground. There are no voices or music; the only sound effects come from gunfire and bullets impacting bodies. When prompted, players may also end the game by committing suicide.

Republicans need to defeat individuals - so incompetence matters.  Liberty needs to defeat Coercive Compassionate Tyranny - so the message ought to be "Poor man is failing because no one could - or should -  do what he's trying to do."

218 We don't need to shut up completely.  There are a couple things that can be openly discussed.

1.  We need immediate legislation to end this ongoing disaster before it does any more damage to the country.

2.  In order to solve the problem we need a change of leadership in the White House and the Senate.

3.  After those two conditions have been met maybe we can "have all the negotiations around a big table. We'll have doctors and nurses and hospital administrators. Insurance companies, drug companies -- they'll get a seat at the table, they just won't be able to buy every chair. But what we will do is, we'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies. And so, that approach, I think is what is going to allow people to stay involved in this process."
