— Pixy Misa Over the weekend, I became aware through some rather unsavory back channels there was a possible need for outside contributions to the Overnight Open Thread through this week. Naturally, after a few days of hoping all the slots would be quickly snapped up by a combination of other eager guest bloggers and maybe a cob or two, I jumped at the opportunity. After all, who knows when I'll ever get another chance to parade my haplessness before a mob of sadistic hecklers?
So, here it is:
Big rigs. Eighteen-wheelers. Semi-trucks. Tractor-trailers. Whatever you want to call them, if you were a red-blooded American boy at any point in your life, chances are you were infatuated with them for least part of it. They were big, loud, and often loaded with contraband. And, given the fact that women look for those very qualities in men, having command of such machinery makes you irresistible to them. They will do anything for you, including competing against large men in a pickup football game.
But, here come the Scandis, threatening to sap the last bit of romance out of the life of the truck-drivin' man by engineering away all its death-defying manliness. Could C.W. McCall have written his classic hit "Convoy" while observing the open road from the cab of a Volvo? To ask the question is to answer it.
So, now that northern Europeans are busily stripping away away the bad-boy sex appeal of the over-the-road trucker, boys and men are left to find alternative vehicular means of getting women to do anything for them. And that leaves only one option: Fast cars. If you have a couple-hundred grand that you were thinking about investing in a big rig in the hopes of securing a few dames and a chimp for companionship, you might consider the Lamborghini Gallardo, instead.
If your trust fund isn't quite large enough to afford such extravagances, then you're going to have to figure out a way to make the money yourself. Unfortunately, we're not all idea-men. Some of us have to get rich through hard work, grit and determination. Others have unusual talents that they're able to parlay into personally satisfying and financially rewarding careers. Fortunately, though, we live in an era where the lack of discernible talent or work ethic need not be a barrier to success.
For example, there's French hip-hop sensation Alex Du 76.
If he can manage to pull dames like this and get them to debase themselves in such a public fashion -- and without the slightest indication of rhyming or dancing ability, who's to say you can't be the next John Lennon. (Although, when it comes to pulling the birds, he may not exactly be the best exemplar. [Content warning: Salty language.])
Anyway, the point of all this is to observe the steady decline in the importance of manliness as a virtue among male role models and heroes. I suppose it all began well before I was born into the world, but it certainly seems to have taken a sharper downward trajectory in the course of my lifetime. When big trucks become as safe as a mother's nurturing embrace, and budding pop stars fall back on the notion of "swag" as a substitute for masculinity, it's a sure sign of a broader cultural emasculation.
At this point, it seems we can only hope the ultimate product of this trend doesn't end up on our grocers' shelves, like that of so many unfortunate lesser mammals.
Depressing as it may be, I guess I should have seen this coming a long time ago, when all my heroes of hard rock and heavy metal in the 80's suddenly found themselves confronted with the dilemma of staying true to the music and its testosterone-driven hard edge, or softening their image so as not to come off as threatening to teenaged girls. It was about that time, after all, when androgyny inexplicably became all the rage. Suddenly, groups started giving themselves names like Rose Bayonet, spelling the end of acts with such manly names as Jag Panzer.
So, for all the hype given the purported "War on Women", we men sure seem to have been making a terrible hash of things. The tough, fearless and slightly crazy heroes emulated by generations of men is steadily being scrubbed from the collective male consciousness in favor of lame, limp-wristed fops who wear machismo like a Halloween costume. I, for one, eagerly await the inevitable backlash.
Tonight's ONT brought to you by Childhood Heroes.

I've often thought that repealling 2nd amendment rights for non-violent felons was an overreach, and I am more convinced of it now. Second, I can't believe that "improper use of a telephone" is a fricken felony or that the judge could give you a felony sentence without you even being aware of it.

Seems Boston College had an ex-IRA thug interview other IRA thugs about their activities. Now one of the thugs has died, possible drug overdoes, who claimed Gerry Adams was her commander in her interview. Now there are people trying to keep this interview away from the Brits and thus prevent them from solving a few crimes.

Hey savvy shoppers, anybody else notice a big jump in grocery prices since the beginning of the year? I don't know if this is a SoCal only thing, but I'm seeing a 10% to 15% increase minimum on most non-promotional items, with a few shockers here and there. The 32 oz block of store brand cheddar that's been steady at $5.99 for years was $9.99 tonight -- not that I'm buying at that price.

VWoA sold just over 26,000 VW Things in the US. Quick visual difference between a Kubelwagen and a Thing is how the spare tire is mounted on the front hood. The Kubelwagens spare was mounted in a depression in the hood. The Thing spare tire, there was no depression. IIRC 1974 and later Things had auxiliary air intakes mounted over the rear wheels - those square boxes. Things had a wider pan that came from the VW Karmann Ghia.

Well, the spirit of that motion was to extend the traditional denial of arms to felons, so that certain misdemeanors qualified as a "firearms disability" too. There were a lot of specific exemptions issued, state to state, to shut up the cop unions, but it started a movement to create "fifth-class felonies" and a host of new disabling misdemeanors. This was all part of the last gun-ban movement.

Weirddave. a short list of places to move to: Wyoming, the Dakotas (lotsa jobs there), Montana, Idaho (great tech jobs), Texas (natch), Utah (Wyoming is close for your liquor needs), even large swatches of places like Oregon, Washington (east of the Cascades), Nevada, Arizona. And, if your spirit of adventure is peaking...Alaska.
Interestingly, these are many of the same places where the male/female wage gap is most evident:
"Ms. Madden said the data show that "in states with larger non-urban populations, there are larger gender gaps." She explained that strength plays a bigger role in employment in rural areas so that men, who tend to be stronger, get jobs that pay more"
So, go there.
Read the article at my sig. It sets up the whole "pay inequity" schtick and then undermines it with "the disparity...is more a function of the jobs women are taking rather than pay for the same jobs."
No kidding.

Hobbit meal schedule: pre-breakfast, to be eaten before bedtime, to ensure really entertaining and often horrific dreams, which start out innocently enough, but then the walkers show up, and you spend the rest of the dream frantically crushing skulls and waiting to wake up, and you finally get a break, but then there they are again, and you have to bash more skulls...

I have the Glock 36 which is a single-stack compact .45, and I like it just fine. The G21 has a larger mag capacity, is double stack and larger in the grip. I liked the G36 better because of its slim grip, my hands are not overly large.
Shut the fuck up.

It'll give you some examples, the weather is a bit extreme, but not much more than in the lower 48.
With the new hours of service, and electronic logs, it's a different game.
and cross border operations has to be a pain since 9/11.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, seriously. Unless you have no other choice.
Adam Smith in his book 'Wealth of Nations' even addresses the circumstance where surplus labor goes into transportation; it was maritime when he was writing about it. But when people are desperate, it drives wages down to the point where everyone starves.
Even in desperate times there will be the one percent who succeed.

I had no problem getting used to it. I think what they're setting you up for is if it bugs you so you remove it in the night. I know now that the nights it stays on all night are better than if it or the hose falls off. So if it is not natural to you stick it out it is well worth it. Then again, that could be on purpose. Forget I mentioned it.
Weirddave, you need a criminal attorney to look into getting the record expunged. An experienced attorney in your state will know what, if any, hoops need to be jumped through. With a clean record afterwards, as well as the fact you didn't even know a judgement had been entered against you, this should be doable.
But it's the fucking east coast, so I could easily be wrong. Still, you need a criminal attorney with experience in their system. Good luck.

OK, more on the MS deal. The Microsoft Home Use Program is a long established program. Usually you need a corporate email and your company's program code to get in on the price, but every so often a code you can use with non-corporate emails leaks, like tonight.
I did this before with Office 2010 with no issues. Just save your installers and the email with your product keys and you should be solid.

There's only a finite amount of info a CPAP machine can gather.....and much of it is quite germane. For example, I upgraded my CPAP for one that could achieve higher pressures....which was nicely supported by the data on the card showing the auto adjustment was usually pegged.

Interestingly, having a CPAP has made my "going to bed" process a lot more formal. I normally hang out online until I'm tired, then get ready for bed, climb in, and strap the mask on......and usually I'm right out. 'Cause I've been trained that "strap on mask -> sleep".
Didn't used to be that way at all -- I used to joke that I was really good at the sleeping and being awake things, but had a lot of problems with the transitions. Used to have a tea and newspaper ritual in the mornings to kickstart the waking up thing, and then CPAP for the going to bed.

Y5, 40 years ago my sister went to summer school so she could graduate early. Turned out, it was the same high school PJ O'Rourke went to (since closed). Her classmates were all recent immigrants from Africa, getting in synch to the US curriculum. They had the most awful things to say about American black culture, in their clipped English accents. And they spat out "the N word" with a ferocity I never heard from a hunky. I often wonder how things worked out for them.

That comment reminds me of an occurrence back in the day. We had a 13-year-old boy in the hospital being monitored for abnormal heart rhythm, on telemetry (so he was able to be up and around the ward and still monitored). One night, the nurse at the monitoring station saw his cardiac rhythm go all wackadoodle, and the team went rushing in to his hospital room. They stormed in on him in the bathroom in "fap"-lagrante delecto, IYKWIM. Poor kid probably never whacked off again.

Evening all. I have a question. We had a salesman swing by and make his pitch for blowing Mylar over my foot or more of insulation. He claims the reflectivity will result in a 33% savings in my energy bill. His price started out, including a 10% discount for being a Sam's club member, at $5700. I told him, I give a shit less about the saving the envirionment crap and I may be interested at $2000. He called his boss and came back with, if my wife would do a video testimonial and we put a sign in our yard, a price of $3000. I said not interested. He came back with, if in a couple years we considered having them paint our house with their super coating that costs 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as regular paint, $2500 (if I said okay today). I said I had a hard and fast rule that I never buy under pressure and I would contact him in a week after I checked out the return on investment myself. I mentioned "trust but verify."
I haven't seen reports of over 18% savings and that would be a long payback period. Need I ask, do any of you eggheads have an opinion on the efficiancy of blowing mylar over insulation in the Southern Ohio part of the country?

Then, again, it's not like the corpus doesn't occasionally come up with a new twist on things -- a couple of years ago, for instance, I didn't eat for four days. And then there was another time I slept for 14 hours straight. I have a feeling that such anomalies will become increasingly common as I move into my second half-century.

Blowing Mylar is crap, laying a Mylar sheet may be something. Think of how a broken mirror reflects light blown Mylar will do the same. There are paints that may be effective (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/nasalife/green_paint.html) Or just look into Mylar coated bubble wrap and compare price. http://www.radiantguard.com/bubble-insulation.html
Insulation is about dead air space Mylar is about reflection Blown Mylar is crap for both.

I have an almost flat roof over the back 2/3 of a second story. It heated all right, but on a 75 degree day, it would be 92 in the upper rooms at 5 PM. Sunlight on the roof (white roof FWIW) saturated the insulated airspace, and even with all windows open and a vent fan, it would bake. A building engineer called it "heat-shock." The lower part of the house would stay very bearable without A/C even at 90 outside.
I made vent channels out of foil-face hard foam and drove them between the rafters from outside, then built a shallow plenum on the roof deck, sized holes, and connected the vent fan to that passage instead of the interior rooms. Then I covered the deck with mirror mylar (stapled lightly, taped joints with packaging tape), covered that with 2 inch block insulboard, and installed rubber roof over that. That did it. Those upper rooms now stay at ambient air temperature.
They tell me the mylar is a hell of a radar target, from above -- one of the things that makes it so good for a survival blanket. Remember that if you're hiding out in the woods.
If you have normal attic insulation, you could just cover it with cheap mylar blankets. Unless you have a vapor barrier on the heated side, I would not seal them. I really think the best place to use it is under the shingles.

Although, if you filled your attic with inflated Mylar balloons you might get both dead air and reflective effects. I'd call it Blown-up Mylar.

I corrected the link and went there. It substantiated what I thought reguarding it being more effective in warmer climates to keep out the sun than to try to get a payback saving heat in the summer. My mind is made up. It's a no go.

One of the few things that has stuck with me from Heat and Mass Transfer class is that the vast majority of insulation occurs within a narrow boundary along the edge of the material in question. What you ideally want is a whole bunch of narrowly-spaced impermeable layers with air trapped between them. The better something approximates that, the better your insulation.
Tiny strips of reflective stuff jammed in overtop of existing insulation doesn't sound particular effective.

I think you can already get a federal tax credit for energy savings improvements. No doubt an attic full of Sponge Bob Squarepants balloons would qualify. Might be fun to claim that as an itemization on your return this year.

Evening all. I have a question. We had a salesman swing by and make his pitch for blowing Mylar over my foot or more of insulation. He claims the reflectivity will result in a 33% savings in my energy bill. His price started out, including a 10% discount for being a Sam's club member, at$5700. I told him, I give a shit less about the saving the envirionment crap and I may be interested at $2000. He called his boss and came backwith,if my wife would do a video testimonial and we put a sign in our yard, aprice of $3000.
Posted by: Ohio Dan at January 25, 2013 12:23 AM (JKNDp)
I'd be very leery of "new" things in the insulation side of the world, in that they very often have odd side-effects. One of the more common is mold. It seems that having big fluffy insulation where air is trapped but still moving slowly wicks moisture out over a variety of temperatures and humidities, but having insulation where air is trapped completely tends to build up moisture on surfaces as warm moist air is cooled.
You may want to chew on some of the stuff here: http://ornl.gov/sci/roofs+walls/insulation/ins_06.html

I was bitterly amused back in the 70's energy panic, when govt pamphlets told everyone to install multi-pane airtight windows, and then they came along a season later and told you to leave them open 1/8" for air circulation. The jackoffs did not know shit. They were guessing. And spending your money.
I did all that energy-saving stuff (well, all that made sense) and got pretty good paybacks. But I never once qualified for their great huge tax credits. Every once in a while, I get one of these snot-nosed greenies between my teeth, and I don't let up until the bones stop cracking.

139 Rommel's PzKw Mk IIIs had radios so the commanders could easily relay orders.
The French were still using little flags to signal commands. Which meant the TC had to stay exposed, in battle.
-------------------------------------
Rommel's division was using captured Czech tanks, actually - the Panzer 38(t). Nice reliable tanks, though not quite as heavily armored as the Panzer III. For the French, I'd favor the Somua S35, as it was armored heavily enough to freak out the Germans, had the same turret as the B-1bis (but not the hull-mounted 75mm gun), and was much faster. And it didn't break down nearly as often.
Of course, the best tanks during the early stages of the war belonged to the Soviets. The T-34 was probably the best all around tank until around late 1942, and the German Panther looks suspiciously like an enlarged and over-engineered (it's German, after all) T-34. The T-34's armor was comparable to the French B-1bis and the British Matilda, it's speed was much higher, and it had a much more powerful gun mounted in the turret. The Soviet KV-series heavy tanks were even worse. Reportedly a single Soviet KV heavy tank got onto the supply line of one of the Panzer Divisions in 1941, and basically shut the line down until the tank finally broke down a week later.

The KV is often overlooked and underrated. The thing was a beast that could roam the battlefield with near impunity. The Red Army fucked up with it, by not using it properly, until late in the game. They were hell bent on maintaining an "infantry tank" type role for it, which by and large kept most of them away from the tank on tank fights where they were most needed. The Red Army was married to speed in it's tank corps and when they tried to include the KV in the ranks with the T34's, T26's and BT's they got frustrated and threw the baby out with the bathwater.
When they finally woke up and put KV's into independent heavy regiments, to get the most out of them, they proved to be a much bigger problem than even the T34. It resulted in the Tiger tank. Also, the russians had a bad habit of sticking just any Ivan into the KV's and not training the crews to wring the most out of actual campaign turner. The KV crews (again until the Red Army woke up and took the KV seriously as a specialist tank killer) were prone to bail out when taking hits, assuming it would brew up like a light, or medium. The Germans would machine gun them escaping from a perfectly good tank. The hits they were taking would barley scratch the paint, let alone destroy it.

Now come on?
I would do nothing but home based BBQ sauce, though I do add some J.D to the finish and I pump up the garlic/shallots with a bit of "Orange Rind" aka SOL-CAL finish when doing my ribs!
Yes, I Be a BBQ MASTER!!!

By comparison, when we have the fish club over for BBQ, it's usually chicken bagged with Kraft "Mesquite" flavor overnight, and thrown on the grill. But when we do BBQ ourselves, it's sometimes wokked with purchased Korean BBQ, sometimes slow roasted, with on-the-side purchased BBQ sauce, and sometimes popped in a slow cooker with secret (read: made up on-the-spot) ingredients. Each has its own appeal.

Yes,
Or, pain that comes from an honest heart...who stabbed is hurting at the thought that the life flows out and there may not be an option to stem the flow for a second chance....

The line's from Moby Dick.
"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hellÂ’s heart I stab at thee; for hateÂ’s sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!"

I haven't even read Moby Dick in its entirety. I just know that particular line from the original copy with this shirt -- http://shirt.woot.com/offers/o-rlyeh .

Man, on the one hand that's awesome Ed Heasley and Jack Atwater were both really excited about the move, on the other hand....

Last month I went to buy a gun. I filled out all of the paperwork, was very careful to read all of the questions thoroughly and answer truthfully. Sent it away with nary a thought, figured that it was just a matter of time, those State Police boys are swamped with applications right now.
So Today I get a letter from the police, saying I’m declined. It seems that I am “Prohibited from purchasing a firearm!” and because I signed the form saying I wasn’t I had committed perjury, my case was being submitted to the AG for criminal investigation, and oh, by the way YOU ARE PROHIBITED FROM POSSESSING FIREARMS, please contact us if you have any so we can assist you in disposing of them (riiiiiight).
What.
The.
Fuck???
There’s a number to call, so I do so. I’m thinking it’s probably a mistake, “oh we got you confused with..” kinda deal. Nope. Seems that there’s a record of my being charged with “unlawful use of a telephone” in 1989. Huh? I don’t remember that (I didn’t). No clue what’s going on. Talk to the guy some more, nope, there’s nothing more, some minor stuff that was stetted or PBJed (probation before judgment) back in my youth, but that’s it: unlawful use of a telephone, and not only does it sound like a joke, it sounds like a dirty one. I did finally figure out what happened. Way back in college, after a breakup with an old GF, she took me to court charging me with harassing her. I denied it, the judge said leave her alone or I’ll throw the book at you, I said I never wanted to see the crazy bitch again and that was the end of it. I hadn’t thought of it in over 20 years, truthfully since maybe a week after the time in court. I’ve figured it out. What must have happened, in order to ensure that I never contacted crazy ex-gf, was the judge found me guilty of unlawful phone use, suspended sentence, and stuck me on unsupervised probation so that if I did call crazy ex-gf, she could find me in violation and impose the jail time. I, who had no desire to see her again, counted this as a win and went on with my life, forgetting the whole sordid episode. NOW, however, I’m in a great big fur ball of shit because of it. In no particular order:
A) Wife is mad. Not because of some bullshit harassment charge decades before we met that I never told her about, but because she was looking forward to having the gun. She’s developed a liking for shooting and was looking forward to doing more of it, now she can’t even go buy the gun herself because that’ll scream “STRAW PURCHASE” to the cops, even if it’s not. I have no problem not having access to the weapon, but we’ll have to look into that, it may be tricky. Can’t do that until next week because:
B) My lawyer is in Nevada until Monday. I sure hope the Md. AG doesnÂ’t take it in his head to do anything tomorrow about:
C)The fact that I now have a FUCKING PERJURY CHARGE hanging over my head. I put no trust, none, nada, zero in that the guy on the phone said “Well, they’ll be no charges, but there could be”, so to make sure I’m damn clean I no longer:
D)“Possess” any firearms whatsoever, and no, they’re not buried in the yard. There isn’t a firearm in the house, on my property or within miles of me (except what other people may own, of course). I possess and have access to not one single firearm, so:
E)Hope nobody breaks in and, to top it off:
F)In order to get this cleared off of my record I have to begin the process of petitioning the Governor for a pardon for my unlawful phone use, a process that starts with a 30 page document that must be exactingly filled out and ends in 1-2 years, at which point the only guns allowed in Md. will probobaly have “NERF” written on them.
ARRRRRRGH!!!!!!!FUCKITY FUCK!
So how was your day?
