I'm also wondering if she's so adamant about this because she's trying to convince herself that she, as a single woman (I assume this) can be perfectly safe and fine as she is. I personally don't own a gun because before I do I'm going to make sure that I know what I'm doing, but the SO is law enforcement and carries everywhere. Oh, man, reminds me of one night in a Denver hotel room. I got up in the middle of the night to pee. I sneezed, and the green came out. I spent--honest to God--the next thirty minutes blowing my nose, and with every forced exhalation, anywhere from two to six tablespoons' worth of sick green goo came out of my nostrils.
Eventually, I felt safe enough to go back to bed.
Wasn't particularly unpleasant, as disgusting bodily fluid emanations go, but wow that was one weird experience.

Been windy all day, I've put the cover on the car several times already, the daughter and son in law have put it on a couple of more and the son has put it on once or twice as well. Finally put my old nasty ripped up cover over top of the new one because the old one is at least fitted, so it hasn't come off again.

elle- Thanks. I must confess I am not conversant with Dubliners. I sort of saw our story as being kind of a Walter Mitty type tale. Since we don't know for sure what happened to my F-I-L, each chapter sort of took on a "What if ...?" aspect as in "what if he went back to his first wife". Some of them are bittersweet or downright sad, while others are just plain silly. I particularly like the chapter where Seamus is kidnapped by aliens- (one legal, one illegal), and helps them fix their space ship. I'm going to have some free promotional days so it will be free on Kindle- sometime next week, maybe on this upcoming weekend.

That description fits to an extent. Walter Mitty was a character who was sort of henpecked, but while waiting for his wife to finish shopping would lapse into reveries where he was the hero, a fighter pilot or the like. So yeah, sort of episodic chapters. I do try to weave them all together with a thread of the truth, but each chapter can sort of stand on it's own as a short story. I certainly don't claim that it is a fine literary masterpiece and I don't know how much broader appeal it might have. It was just a story that kind of told itself- with a lot of suggestions and help from Mrs. Muldoon.

My give a shit meter for them went out a couple of years ago when tornadoes blew through western Virginia and the JEF denied the area aid. Lucky for us McDonnell decided to use some of our state's budget surplus that he created for aid to those areas.
And the meter finally got thrown away last summer during that big derecheo or whatever when we were without power for a week in 100+ heat. Whole region without power, lots of damage, we got nothing. Hell neither Bon Jovi nor Springsteen came to perform an acoustic set for a benefit concert.

My daughter got knocked up by a guy ten years ago. They have shared custody which means he stays high and my grand daughter goes to his parents house where they just spend money on spoiling her. My daughter pays all the real expenses of raising a child. He hasn't been allowed to visit her unless he was at his Mom and Dad's for the last year due to multiple dui arrests, drug arrests, smacking his girlfriend around. You get the drift. His mommy decides dope head son has been straight for a couple weeks and let's daddy have her alone. He gets hopped up on prescription meds, we think. And at 10 pm drives her to a restaurant. My granddaughter says he kept dropping his head and jerking the car. They ended up at a place where he took a couple sips of a beer and passed out on the table. He wanted to drive my grand kid home. Management wouldn't let him. Management offered a cab but dumbass has to get mouthy and the cops were called. My daughter was called and she picked up her daughter at the restaurant and is trying to get court ordered supervised visitation.

In my own situation, I've been trying to put together a retirement plan for some years where I can continue to live in the house we're in, because it's been such a good home for the BH and me. But as I was paying the $5K property tax bill in December, I realized that the reason things were impossible was because I kept assuming this house, this area, this state....and removing that one constraint opened a world of possibilities.

Joffen, how many hours a week do you work? Since you have trouble sleeping have you tried to do anything about it. Have you done anything to improve your financial situation. I live in MA and have a house that is too big, its not the time to sell it. I need some insulation in one area. MA has this program I had never heard of, Mass Saves. I had the man here from around 1 until 8:40 tonight. They'll give you 75% off insulation etc up to $2,000 per unit. We have a two family house. I also let him put in some of those CFL lightbulbs, only because some were out. We had a roof leak in 2009 and had it fixed. It's leaking again. I have to get that fixed and then they'll pay for the insulation.
This is an old house and I don't know things about stuff like this. One side of the house has the 3+ inches required for add'l insulation, the other side has 2 inches. I think it's over 100 years old.
I feel like I wasted my whole day, I didn't want to follow him around but wanted to know what he was doing.

Government programs for energy efficiency are by-and-large worthless. Could be worse, though -- in one famous example in Australia, http://tinyurl.com/bbhl7kk , people died and houses burned down. Instead, follow some common-sense procedures.
For instance, pick a cold night and walk around your house and feel the walls and windows. Any feel particularly chilly? If the window in one bedroom is cool, but another one is frigid, the second is probably a single-paned job that could use replacing. If a particular wall is notably cooler than other walls (especially on an old house), that's the one that needs insulation.
Write everything down as you notice it. You can prioritize it later -- because sensible people (unlike governments) look at both costs and benefits when setting priorities. If changing your windows will cost 5x what insulating your walls will, then you'd be better off doing the walls even if the windows are 2x worse.

We put six new windows in December 2011. I desperately need insulation in the back hall. My clothes dryer is there and if it's as cold as it was last week, the clothes freeze and so do I if I don't get them out as soon as they are done. I want the hall insulated first. There is no insulation in there at all. I leads to a porch outside on the second floor. I should probably put a door without a window inhere. I have estimate for the insulation only with the 75% credit I have to fix the roof first.
We were going to put a few new windows in last year but money is tight.
Thanks for the advice. I use my common sense. I know some people go for the free things but I want that hall insulated first. In this case, I am going to take the money from the state because our Governor is a short,stocky version of TFG and wants to increase income tax!

I should also point out that insulation isn't difficult....it's the damned drywall finishing that's a pain in the tuchis. You could get 12-year-olds to rip the drywall off, stuff the insulation in, and cover it up with drywall again, and it would be just as good as contractors......but then there's taping, mudding, and texture.....

Why ain't it jus' called "slop", same ways as everyone else says it? "Backlash" sounds like it's the tool creatin' tension in the worked material and the material relaxin' afterward, whereas "slop" sounds like the play between forward an' back'ard cycles, way them machinists use it.
Seriously, I had to go through all sorts of weird references until I got it (if indeed I have).
And for a follow up question -- let's say I was running a CNC mill and I wanted to minimize slop in x.....would preloading the table on x -- like with bungies or something -- reduce the slop, being as the loading would never shift from one side of the x travel to the other?
I completely realize that these may be ignorant questions, but ignorance can sometimes lead to insight. I once had a small part in a patent, where the head of engineering had been explaining "diff phase" to me regarding measured video a few days back and was later talking about how "dispersion" distorted signals in fiberoptics....and I asked, "wasn't one like the opposite of the other?"

GM has improved the fit and finish of their cars, but they were so bad for so long that anything is an improvement. The 5th gen Camaro does pack a load of torque, and it will certainly handle better with the IRS, but the hard manual gearbox is still a flaw that GM hasn't remedied unless they loosen up quite a bit in the breakin period.
The visibility issue is a turnoff to me too, but then again I tend to be a little claustrophobic

Problem is, machinists know their tools -- while CNC guys know their models. So thinking in CNC, it's natural to suppose that anything you dial-in will end up just like the CAD drawing. That's what I was initially thinking. Now that I know there's a difference, I'm trying to understand the parameters around that difference.
Incidentally, I did some research into 3D printers recently -- did you know you can tell which direction was "up" when they were printed by rubbing your fingernail on the face? If it goes "slish, slish", that was parallel to the platform; if it goes "zit, zit", that was perpendicular.

CNC routers tend to be gantry designs suitable for plywood. Affordable CNC mills tend to be more precise, for metalwork, with ranges less than 12"x12"x12".

Not true. They work fine. We had an old Lucas boring mill retrofited with CNC controls. Ran it for 15+ yrs. You put in a .0005 move and it does it.

The preferred way to minimize backlash on, say, the table on a mill is to have 2 machine nuts on the screw that drives the table.
One of the nuts is fixed, and is not allowed to move or rotate. The other one is to allowed to rotate, but may be moved towards or away from the other nut. This way, one of the screws is in contact with one side of the screw, and the other nut is in contact with the other side.
Note that when backlash is zero, the table cannot move. A small amount of backlash is therefore needed.
CNC mills generally use ball screws ... the screws contact the nuts via some recirculating balls. The backlash can be reduced even further, since the friction is very low.
The downside is that an 8TPI screw can be pushed through the nut ... holding the nut in one hand and using the other to push the screw. CNC machines have no trouble with this, as the servo motors are usually quite powerful. A manual machine with ball screws is an ugly accident waiting to happen. Climb milling is a poor choice with a mill larger than 1/4" ... switch to ball screws and there is real danger. Conventional milling is the plan on manual machines.
"Calligraphy Pen" ... may I introduce you to MasterCAM? It is possible to use the fonts organic to MasterCAM and an engraving bit ... select "Edwardian" script.
Alternatively, the pattern you desire may be drawn in SolidWorks or Pro-E, then imported into MasterCAM.
Have you considered rolling up to DeAnza and checking out the program there? Parking is $3.00.

Such is the state of my education (so far) that I grokked better than 90% of this.....and six months back, I was but a lowly CPA.
On the other hand, I was managing production at a company with several CNC mills in the 80's, and moved on to be the Controller of an industrial robot company (that used ballscrews for Z travel [although they moved radially and not XYZ]) in the 90's. There's a reason that I have the peculiar combination of familiarity and ignorance that I'm demonstrating.
For backlash, someone had a diagram of a milled circle with little points where the positioning screws shifted from forward to reverse that made it click for me -- I just hope I clicked the right way, mentally. I had been looking for material flex or tool bending because of the implications of the term "backlash", but the little points indicated that it was more "slop from coming off the left shoulder of the leadscrew onto the right shoulder".
And that's why I was asking about bungie cords.
And, BTW, we may have a fascist git in the Oval Office and the economy is circling the drain....but in a lot of ways, we live in a world of wonders....where we can chat about this stuff at midnight.

When you cut a circle or an arc on a CNC mill the machine moves in a straight line from one point to the next unlike a boring head which cuts a true circle. It will cut a "circle" but the points can be so fine as to be called a circle.

OK, true story.....
In about 1984, I was working at a small accounting firm in Encino. One of our audit clients was a condominium complex in Beverly Hills -- very, very, very high end. I did my work on the glass dining room table of a penthouse unit -- the owner had occupied it for a total of three days some years back and instructed the management to keep it ready for him but otherwise use it for "whatever" in his absence.
So the drill was, I'd go down to the office, grab a bunch of records, haul 'em up to the penthouse and go through 'em, get a list of questions, go down and get documents to answer the questions (and return the original records)....and write-up my findings.
So, one day, I'm getting off the elevator on the penthouse level, and there's a guy coming out of a unit in one wing and another guy walking the corridor of the other -- and the walking guy goes, "George! George! Is that you?" The other guy goes, "Fred?" And Fred says, "George, I can't believe it! Last time I saw you was almost 20 years ago with that load of carpets in the Hindu Kush!"
At which point, I'd gotten back to where my work was, opened the door, and passed inside. And sat there, in shock, at that glass table in the swanky penthouse -- marveling that two people could cross paths in a caravan in central asia one decade, and in a sixth-floor corridor in Beverly Hills two decades later.
It's a small world, indeed.

Although I hated it at the time, the money that eventually sent me and my sister to college came from building five houses, moving into them half built, and selling them once complete. I didn't appreciate getting rousted out of bed on weekends to pound nails or mix mortar, but I have used that experience about as much as (if not more than) anything I learned in school.
I don't know every trade -- but I generally know enough about each trade to ensure I get good value. For what I can't do entirely by myself, I can prep for the specialists to work efficiently.
When TSHTF, I intend to be well ahead of the "Gender Grievance Studies" majors -- and even the other CPAs -- in the "going to make it to the other side and prosper" sweepstakes.

Do both. Learn as many things as you can. If you have to choose, I recommend "Electrician" first.
Learning to be a good carpenter takes time, but learning to be even a passable electrician takes a bit more. You will face less competition, and will be in greater demand.

I'm willing to do all sorts of electrical work, so long as it's not in a "hot box" -- I know a bit too much about the service from the utility, and I'm not at all comfortable with working upstream from a master breaker. Subpanels and circuits, though -- pfui! BFD.
I had to correct a handyman's two-switch, two-fixture circuit one time after he'd floundered around on it for a couple of hours.

I got an X2 for $400 from Harbor Freight -- I'll unbox when I'm ready to CNC....which will probably cost me another $400+....and tool....which will probably cost me another $400+.....but the upshot is that CNC is poised to take off -- just take a look at http://www.thingiverse.com/ or http://defcad.org/ .

There's a million code legal ways to accomplish almost anything. Some elegant, others nasty and crude looking, but still "legal".
The electric code isn't about beauty, its about safety.
I like to do thing neat, tidy and thought out well enough that it looks elegant, even though and inspector and I may be the only ones to ever see it.
Inspectors like elegant and neat.
That being said, a lot of the clowns slinging Romex and plastic boxes for residential work are pretty damn crude.

If you decide to "rebuild" it, and you might want to, go to arceurotrade ... here:

and look around for their rebuild .PDF. My belief (I don't have one) is that this will transform your HARBOR FREIGHT thing into a mill of good quality.
HF quality control is ... OTOH, their 8" lathe (internet only) is reputed to be a very good copy of the old Austrian Emco 8" lathe. Even for $999.99, it's a good buy.
Also, I recall a site from about 3 years ago, where the guy was using an X-2 and found that the column wasn't quite stiff enough. He added weight to the top at certain times, and claimed it worked. If your mill does indeed have such an issue, I'd see about making a "chair" from 4x4 square tubing, something that supports the mill and the column with a few 3/8-16 bolts to clamp and adjust the column.
If you are cutting plastic, and I think the X-2 is a very good choice for this, then you might never see this issue. If you decide to cut a lot of aluminum, you might see it.

It is my understanding that X2's aren't so much production mills as more like DIY mill kits. I expect to be building and rebuilding the unit a few times -- much like a beater starter car -- while I learn how to get results from it. If the results need faster/more repeatable volume, I'll have learned what I need to scale up -- whereas if I'm making a few novelty items per day, I might be ok. It's not a toy, but it's not really a professional tool -- much like the rest of stuff available at Harbor Freight.
One mod I already had in the mental file was a slab of fence-post-concrete with cast-in wooden rails, where I could stand the thing on its edge and use threaded rods against the rails to brace the center post.
Again, I know there's nice stuff out there.....but I'm looking to simulate it cheaply with low-tech fixes.

I have a confession to make -- that will probably make sense to you and a couple of other folks, but not to the great outdoors.
I over-wire. If something needs 14-ga, I'll use 12; if something needs 12, I'll use 9.
So, I'll stub out into the boxes with THICK mf'ers, and have to wrestle them around to work. So I'll pull the plates to paint, but not dip into the box -- 'cause there's enough solid metal in there under tension.....that I could face serious downside risks.

Arc Euro Trade has many interesting things, besides free downloadable .PDFs ... like a vernier protractor, accurate to 2 minutes (most are only accurate to 5 minutes), and for about $80.00, delivered.
I have one of these, and I like the quality.
