— Open Blogger Gee, what a surprise! Organic foods are essentially identical to conventional foods, except of course for the massive price tag. So all of the billions of gallons of gasoline pissed away driving to out-of-the-way hippie hang-outs just to buy that organic kale and celeriac were wasted. Women and children hardest hit, of course.
The health claims made by the willing fools are legion. Corporate farming is responsible for a litany of first-world diseases (ignoring the thing that they are most responsible for....old age!), and organic farmers were going to save us from their depradations.
So who or what are they going to blame their imagined health problems on now?

I try to eat natural. I read an article by an organic farmer, who went into it after his neighbor had a pesticide hauler break open all over him, and it paralyzed the guy.
We eat stuff grown in the in-laws' garden and farmer's markets. I don't think it makes me gullible to try to avoid chemicals.

Yeh, carrot, I usually try to avoid it.
I'm annoyed that to get sausage I have to choose between organic and "stuffed with HFCS" unless I can find that one brand that is "natural" but not "organic".
And this is why I just bought a big chicken and a big pork butt this week and am having leftovers for breakfast.

In fact, everything on this planet is organic. The only things I wouldn't call organic would be the meteorites that have fallen here from space.

The problem with "organic" is the definition. The rules are under constant change by the large sellers. We think of organic as grandma tending the garden. Some large groups want it labeled as such if they put organic fertilizer on it, but still use pesticides.

I like going to the local farmer's market because I can get stuff there that I can't get anywhere else. Though, I must say, seeing the "Eat Local!" sign up right next to the booth for the guy selling ostrich always makes me laugh and laugh. Ahhhh, yes. If only we could return to yesteryear when the great herds of ostrich roamed the North Carolina plains.
Annnnd back to whining about not having a Wegman's. Reason 12,398,332 I miss Wegman's, I could actually buy ostrich and buffalo there. No big deal, no muss, no fuss, just right there next to the ground chuck. Sniffle.
Though I will say I was taken aback when I saw scrapple at my local Harris Teeter the other day. I had no idea that anyone outside the greater Philly area even knew what that was.

They open the box, the emu will freak out and attack them and apparently they are vicious nasty creatures that would love to claw you to death. Person dies, emus runs off and wow how did that happen.

Hmmm,
How stupid are the liberals and hipsters who buy into this shit?
OK, fine, we need science to tell us about the nutritional value of the individual food.
EXCEPT I've been pointing out to people since I was highschool that modern farming has allowed us to grow so much more food, that this has to outweigh any percieved nutritional deficiency. (To put it differently, we're not exactly dying of scruvy over here. And we're better fed in general.)
People who want to undo that simply hate the poor. I really do think we'll be able to make a remarkably large dent in food shortages world wide in my lifetime, if people would just let us use all the tools in our bag.

Don't use Nutra Sweet. It will cause cancer and you will die. Real unbleached sugar is want you want. Being fat is healthy!
The nutrasweet cancer claims were overblown.
Turns out the way rats process the stuff is entirely different than how humans process it. Rats generate crystals that puncture their bladders (which lead directly to cancer because of the constant need for bladder repair eventually results in a miscopied cell.)
Humans don't do that. Later experiements in mice showed no likelyhood of cancer.
It's the "Andrew Wakefiled" of food science. Horribly horribly flawed study, constantly cited.

FWIW, I got a kick of Seattle getting all bent out of shape when their liquor prices skyrocketed when they allowed regular stores (non Gov't run ones) to start selling liquor.
Everyone yelled "see Capitalism doesn't work?!!" no one bothered to note the law included a 10% additional tax on liquor.
So the prices are roughly in line with what I pay in the midwest, until they apply the absurd (IIRC) 40% liquor tax.

Yeah, total crap, so says the 237 studies all magically funded by major food corporations. Have to disagree with this one. Watch Food, Inc. My wife suffers from celiac disease, which isn't actually a disease, and I see this stuff on a daily basis. It's not a joke. Some are more sensitive than others, but it's rather well established that mass produced food contains a lot of bad stuff. I've got a sister-in-law that can only eat grass-fed beef. If she eats any meat that isn't grass fed she has what amounts to an allergic reaction, her face swells up, she's in extreme pain, etc. It's no joke, if you saw pictures it would freak you out. A rare case of course, but others have reactions too, just on a smaller scale without realizing it. Why is it that we have higher incidence of mental health issues than compared with 100 or 200 years ago? Why more allergies? Why do populations in 3rd world nations who eat more normal diets have lower incidence of these conditions than we do? Why other health issues that we didn't have before? Yes we live longer, but it's got nothing to do with what we eat. It's in spite of what we eat. Biologically we were meant to have high meat high fat diets with smaller amounts of veggies and grains, this is how we lived for thousands of years. And we certainly didn't eat all these processed foods or vegetables covered in pesticides or meat from animals juiced up to make them larger who are also eating corn and other things (also covered with pesticides) that they weren't meant to eat either. It's a bit foolish to dismiss even the idea that all this might have side-effects. I had the exact same mindset about this stuff until I got married and saw what my wife goes through. It's real.

Perusing the first news thread of the morning, it looks like lots of 'rons and their families have some sort of bug going around. I humbly offer this recipe for Hot Ginger Lemonade, which always makes the adults in the RB household feel better. (I think it would be tough to get little kids to drink this without a gallon of honey in it.)
This home remedy that was printed in the Richmond Times-Dispatch more than a decade ago. It's suggested for "chilly weather colds, flu, general aches and pains, nagging sore throats and just plain blahs. Hot ginger lemonade makes everything all right again." Hot Ginger Lemonade 2 Tbs fresh, grated ginger root (no need to peel) 2 cups boiling water 1 Tbs honey * 2 Tbs freshly squeezed lemon juice pinch cayenne pepper Put ginger shards into boiling water. Cover pot and let steep for 5 or 10 minutes. Strain out the ginger, add the honey, lemon and pepper. Stir, drink, get well. From the article: Ginger lemonade tastes best in a tempered glass or very thin china mug for reasons I don't quite understand. * I need way more honey than this to be able to drink this. Hint: Wrap knobs of fresh ginger in foil and store in freezer. It keeps a long time.

HAYEK
You see slack in some sectors as a “general glut”
But some sectors are healthy, only some in a rut
So spending’s not free – that’s the heart of the matter
too much is wasted as cronies get fatter.
The economyÂ’s not a car, thereÂ’s no engine to stall
no expert can fix it, there’s no “it” at all.
The economyÂ’s us, we donÂ’t need a mechanic
Put away the wrenches, the economyÂ’s organic

Note, this article also doesn't really address the issue. Yes, a banana is a banana. Nobody said an "organic" banana has a higher nutritional content. A banana is still a freaking banana. Organic simply refers to how it's grown, the environment, pesticides, etc. E coli? WTF does this have to do with anything? People aren't afraid of getting E coli or Salmonella from non-organic fruits or veggies or meat. If anything I would think you are less likely. I have never heard this argument anywhere. Organic beef simply means it's grass fed cows, not cows juiced on various drugs, not cows fed corn or milo that is covered in extra-strength pesticides that they won't even use on the mass produced food meant for human consumption. Often illegal actually. So instead the cow eats the bad pesticide, it goes into their system, into their meat, and then passed on to you in the form of a steak. Those same chemicals are in the steak.
And if this is all a load of crap, explain to me how my sister-in-law magically has a HUGE reaction from eating beef that isn't from grass fed cows? Not a joke. Put two steaks in front of her. One is grass fed, the other from the regular meat section at your local grocery store. She will have an allergic reaction to one and not the other.

I have to laugh. Most of the "farmer's markets" are guys that go to the state farmers market and buy produce there, load it into a pick up truck and pass it off as local. Check the box the fruit is in. Comes from FL 90% of the time. I even asked a "farmer" if his fruit was local. Sure is. The shit was from Plant City FL. I guess he had a big definition of "local".

Posted by: EC at January 19, 2013 10:15 AM (doBIb)
Late to this discussion, but that is nonsense. Neither naturally-occurring uranium ore, or spent fuel rods are "organic" in either sense of the word "organic". The proper meaning of "organic" in chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds, and the only carbon that might be found in uranium ore would be carbonate, which is explicitly not "organic" in chemistry. As for the BS meaning of "organic", as in "farmed naturally", well that is totally inappropriate, too.
And, for the record, spent nuclear fuel contains numerous short-lived isotopes not normally found in nature, because their half-lives are so short that they essentially decayed away to nothing over the life of the Earth.
By the way, Canadian blogger Kate McMillan's excellent conservative blog Small Dead Animals has a recurring topic title: "Organic is Latin for 'grown in pig shit'".
Hope this renders properly, that barrel looks nasty.

Screw a boatload of 'organic' food.
I grow a large garden every year and I try to use chemicals to improve the production any way I can. Manually pulling weeds sucks ass but this year I have it dicked because I'm going to use mulch to cover every square inch of ground along with an irrigation system to water everything I plant. RapidGro and Peters will see a heavy rotation as I try to get the most out of the soil and plants in it.
No more weeding, heat can't kill off my plants like it does yearly means higher yeilds and a longer growing season.
Organic farming my aching ass, "A better way of life through chemicals" has always been my motto!

This economy is not robust or free enough to allow casually abandoning houses.

No overpaying is though.
Freshness is largely only an issue if you eat them raw, if being used in food prep the gain is there but hardly overpowering. Bebe I don't think anyone is supporting outlawing anything so far as "freshness local happy" but there are economies involved. Economies of scale are real, as is wholesale v retail price structure to ensure profit margin.
Can you buy local?
Yup and I do for Corn, watermelon, and apples because truth be told I rather enjoy driving by the local farms that cannot realistically compete with corp farms.
Often the main thing is that they hold back the highest quality yield to take advantage of the retail margin of profit room rather than take the wholesale "guaranteed money."
Nothing wrong with it I think we're just discussing the market dynamics vs nutritional vs the God help me "food safety" gain.

So when I do black, it's a frock coat and trousers, though the waistcoat will be jewel-toned or something. Depression? Nah. INTPs don't get depressed. Actually, I've just commissioned a 1730's Court (that's royal, not judicial) outfit in a beautiful burgundy taffeta with raised criss-crossing. I may avoid black altogether. So the distribution of fat/muscle may be different which affects the quality of the meat, but in terms of there being a difference to the animal eating that meat - in terms of "allergens" or "contaminants" or whatever it is these folks think they're detecting - I don't see the basis for that claim.
Posted by: Y-not at January 19, 2013 11:49 AM (5H6zj)
It's really quite simple. Cattle are grazing animals. Grass is what they eat, along with some other small plants (and some plants they avoid). Most beef cattle start out on grass, or hay, which is "preserved" grass, but they are usually "finished", i.e. fattened up, on corn or grain. It adds mostly fat to their mass, and not much muscle. Here in Canada, we mostly finish our cattle on barley, although corn is starting to see some use. Cattle "finished" on grass give you much leaner meat, which is sought after by many buyers, and more expensive, because you get less meat per carcass.

We raised a steer a year for a while, then butchered it and split the meat with some friends of ours (who would raise a couple of hogs, butcher them, and give us one). The butcher we used for our beef made us sign a waiver to age the beef beyond 14 days, and the packages we got were all clearly stamped "Not for Resale." Man, that was good beef.

Certainly Trevor but I wonder if you understand the notion of utility cost?
I'm not talking down to you sincerely.
You have X mount of arable land, x amount of potential water for agri use, x amount of acceptably yield per acre, x amount of maintaining quality for harvest cost and on and on.
Yes there is a price to be paid in utilizing chemicals for maintaining quality(ie pest control and nutrification) but there is also gain in yield per acre, reduction of manpower, hardiness of crop vs elements etc etc.
If the conundrum facing us was "it must be one or the other in usage of land" I would be more amenable to your arguments that "it is also what we add versus what we lose' with regards to pesticides and chemicals.
That is not what is in play here, we have the liberal version of Tardasil going on, and I am NOT accusing all of you have a preference for organic of being nuts.
I am saying overhyping the "dangers of frankenfood" and such artificially harms the ability to feed the maximum number of people as cheaply as possible when the hysteria uses regulatory fiat and law with bad data influencing the demand matrix when low information individuals analyze and compute utility cost for foodstuffs selection.
You gain some utility and ease of mind from the presence of "chemicals", and I will grant for the sake of argument that my use of "frankenfoods" has a real health cost.
So long as I do not legislate away your ability to have organic, so long as I do not hide data on the production methods and handling as a citizen I should be able to analyze and decide what the optimal intersection of maximum utility and cost i will bear to meet my nutritional needs.
If by eating "frankenfoods" I free up a higher portion of my income for say skills training, entertaining contacts, etc etc I have made the choice I will bear what risks I must to navigate this mortal coil in my food intake.
I think we cannot legislate a free lunch for the "maximum utlity" of pure organic with NO costs, and the altered yield, and manpower ARE costs.
I happen to like free markets regulated as minimally as is needed for genuine safety for the population at large.
"safety" meaning "will not kill high %s of users and all data is available" rather than "let Mikey Bloomberg plan your dinner for 72 years."
No offense or evil intent meant to be imputed to you.

I like to piss off hippie eco-douchers by pointing out that crude oil comes directly from mother earth, chock full of organic goodness.

I agree....they will be starving best case for us the third world, worst case for us us....
I don't want anyone to starve, I want to fight to sustain as many as safely possible if need be.
The 3d world hating us is justified they understand we want them dead if they can reason, and i am not the asshole who thinks a 35 year old graduate economist in Kenya is a child who can be conned.

Do people honestly believe we spend billions of dollars developing pesticides, herbicides, preservatives and manufacturing processes just to make life worse for people? Liberal hippies are going to get us all killed with their emotional arguments.

I want to puke everytime I hear about how we need an "adult" conversation about certain topics. No, we don't, unfortunately we're not a nation of adults, at least not the ones that decide our elections.
Romney should have played Obama like Trump did, like a carnie barker. I would have made Obama's academic transcripts the centerpiece of the campaign. The ObamaPhones should have been front and center instead of MediCare.
I'd love to live in a different nation that had intelligent voters, but we don't.

A few yrs ago- my husband and i-3rd gen farmers(@ least, who knows what the tree before us was all about) decided to transition over to organic since the $$$$ was better- and steady/stable. Not going w/out saying- the costs are for sure more, too. Our main reasoning was not having to be @the mercy of the conventional market anymore- which is a scam for the farmer- where a paycheck can vary every two weeks by hundreds of dollars- and thousands if a farm is really large.
It's a shift in mindset, but it's a lot different than conventional, let me tell you. No more hormones to clean out cows, to make them come into heat(you all know about the ~heat~ part, right?)no antibiotics to settle a small cough- or a runny eye or any infection- unless we wish to forfeit the future genetics- as we have to sell treated animals... it's way more than a load of bullshit, but really- i don't much care anymore what people think.
Pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, etc are not bad- but, IMhumbleO, they are rarely used the way they are meant to on a farm- by which i mean- overkill is natural. There are so many management practices that can be improved upon besides ~raping and reaping~ to the greatest yield- which can be detrimental to the health of our land-this monoculture mentality-...
I'm way happier w/our milk being organic and since Bernie-freaking-Socialist- Sanders hasn't helped the VT farmer survive(we have so few farms, the other kids call my kids weirdos for living on a farm)becoming an organic farmer was it- other than some low income job- both folks working, etc etc...
I'm proud to be a ~f**king Republican~, as a local crotchety carpenter building our small heifer barn recently called me. "Didn't your Father teach you better than that?!" "Sure- where do you think i learned it from?" "Whaa... he's a f**king Republican, too?"
One last thing- i didn't read through the entire thread- surprised the grousing went on for so long over organic farming... but, the comment #419 in no way speaks for me, as a VTer. Bratt is a long way from the Kingdom- that's all i have to say.
ps drink milk- it does a body good- and as the Co-op garners our pycks for both national and local advertisement- it's all good(but, ours is better:0)).
