Our Devious, Incompetent President Has Lied Us Into Class War Open Thread
— Ace

If you like your hospital and doctors, you can keep your hospital and doctor.

Except you can't.

Oh well! Gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet!

Oh, and the Administration is, get this, still lying when it claims that only people in the individual market will be losing their insurance. In fact, more than half of all people in the employer markets will be losing their insurance, too. That's the mid-range estimate; it could be lower.

It could also be higher.

Mid-range estimate: 51% of employer-sponsored plans will get canceled

But CarneyÂ’s dismissal of the mediaÂ’s concerns was wrong, on several fronts. [This refers to Carney's, get this, false characterization of a Federal Register estimate as only concerning individual market policies. -- ace.] Contrary to the reporting of NBC, the administrationÂ’s commentary in the Federal Register did not only refer to the individual market, but also the market for employer-sponsored health insurance.

Section 1251 of the Affordable Care Act contains what’s called a “grandfather” provision that, in theory, allows people to keep their existing plans if they like them. But subsequent regulations from the Obama administration interpreted that provision so narrowly as to prevent most plans from gaining this protection.

“The Departments’ mid-range estimate is that 66 percent of small employer plans and 45 percent of large employer plans will relinquish their grandfather status by the end of 2013,” wrote the administration on page 34,552 of the Register. All in all, more than half of employer-sponsored plans will lose their “grandfather status” and get canceled. According to the Congressional Budget Office, 156 million Americans—more than half the population—was covered by employer-sponsored insurance in 2013.

Another 25 million people, according to the CBO, have “nongroup and other” forms of insurance; that is to say, they participate in the market for individually-purchased insurance. In this market, the administration projected that “40 to 67 percent” of individually-purchased plans would lose their Obamacare-sanctioned “grandfather status” and get canceled....

How many people are exposed to these problems? 60 percent of Americans have private-sector health insurance—precisely the number that Jay Carney dismissed. As to the number of people facing cancellations, 51 percent of the employer-based market plus 53.5 percent of the non-group market (the middle of the administration’s range) amounts to 93 million Americans.

The individual market insurance policyholders are the first victims of Obamacare.

But they will not be last.

My company switched from an Aetna HMO to an Aetna EPO with almost exactly the same benefits right after Obamacare passed so the grandfather status of our plan was moot from the beginning (not by accident, I expect).

I'm lucky because my insurance is still through my company, but the premiums for the same plan only went up $1200/year (pre-tax).

31 Megan McArdle has been writing some good pieces on the details of this stuff. One big takeaway -- In the 90s everybody ran away from HMOs and now Obama is herding us all back into them. And I still have a big question: Will lower-income people be forcibly enrolled in Medicaid? Will they have the option of paying for regular insurance? Can a poor person with a chronic condition choose to scrimp and save in other areas of life so they can afford to buy better-than-Medicaid insurance?

34 Senate Democrats facing reelection next year aren’t just fretting about a balky website and President Barack Obama’s misleading campaign statements on health care. Now they’ve begun worrying about another deadline a year away. According to an Affordable Care Act timetable established by administration officials, early next October insurance companies will announce their new menu of health care plans for the ACA marketplaces — plans that may be more varied and numerous than those offered this year, but that almost certainly will come with higher prices. The likely price hikes will hit the individual and small-business insurance markets only weeks before Election Day on Nov. 4, 2014. “What genius came up with that timetable?” asked one key Democrat, who declined to be quoted by name because he is involved in private White House talks.

43 Old people are allowed to buy supplemental insurance to Medicare. Will poor people be allowed to buy supplemental insurance to Medicaid? Pre-Obamacare they could. A poor person can buy an expensive Aetna plan, Aetna will take their money. Aetna doesn't care if that person is living in a hovel and eating beans every meal so they can see the best doctors. My understanding of Obamacare is that it will be forcing everyone who technically qualifies for Medicaid (ie have income below a certain threshhold) to be forcibly enrolled. Am I wrong?

The new one has about a 10% error rate and just jams shit in the box on the fly while rolling by slowly.  Now I'm getting other people's mail all the time, but it arrives by 11am!

163 A federal appeals court has reinstated most of Texas' new abortion restrictions.

A panel of judges at the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling Thursday evening, three days after District Judge Lee Yeakel said one provision serves no medical purpose.

The panel says that the law requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital can take effect while a lawsuit moves forward.

186 Truth is that the American people have been gang raped. The perpetrator is now going around trying to convince any who will listen that it was the victim's fault or worse that it was good for them. The people will probably survive the rape. The sad part though, the really sad part is that the people have now been infected with a virus, thanks to the perpetrator. Like Aids, it will never go away. It will always be there. There may be remedies to manage it but there is no cure. Sadly it did not have to happen. The people turned to the authorities for protection but the judges said no crime had been committed. Yet. Then the rape happened and everyone was surprised.

As you know, the original lines were "Tax the rich, feed the poor, until there are no, rich no more."

Even as a teen, listening to that, I thought: "then what?" The only reasonable answer was that the point was to tear down the rich, and the poor were just a means to that end. I wasn't a conservative yet, but that song was part of the path I used to get there.

Flatbush Joe,

I don't think anyone can be forced into Medicaid. It's just that someone who qualifies for it can't get subsidies on the exchanges. You can however, buy a plan from the carriers directly if you like, you'll just pay the full unsubsidized premium for an O-care qualified plan.

If someone is well off, but doesn't make much income on paper, but could easily afford one, that's the way to go. Or if you're really well off, and can stand the risk of a few $100K hit lump sum if something really bad happened, forgo insurance entirely.

My advice is to stay off the exchanges no matter what. Don't enter any personal info into them. You'll regret it.

422 #306 re: amargi, "freedom" as a general or abstract concept isn't quite accurate; the word means amnesty, freedom from debt.  The Sumerians would make chattel slaves out of others but not themselves.  However, they had no problems with indenturing their neighbor.  So many citizens became debt slaves that the king decided to amnesty everybody, at which point the newly freed began the slow process of building up so much debt that they'd become indentured again.  So the kings used to wind up having to do this every 50 or so years --- it's the basis of the "jubilee" in the Bible.

Ama-ar-gi means, literally, "return to mother".  Ha ha.  I love it when I see bikers with go home to mommy tattooed on their arms.

504 Posted by: Jane DÂ’oh at October 31, 2013 09:17 PM (lVPtV) Jane I almost had a heart attack a few yeas ago when a frigging squirrel was in the house and my older brother, who lives downstairs wasnÂ’t home. I finally trapped the SOB with the vacuum cleaner. Any pet I have ever had hated vacuums. I turned it on and kept it pointed at the sucker trying to climb up behind my late motherÂ’s curio which is full of HummelÂ’s. I take Valium as a muscle relaxer, enough to sedate a horse according to some doctors. That thing ate part of a box of blueberry muffins I had on the table. I pulverized three tablets and sprinkled on the three remaining muffins, hoping it would go back to them and kill itself on Valium.

Scared the bejeesus out of me until I figured out what was causing all that noise.

445 I found some dry unsweetened cocoa in the pantry. Surely I can make something out of it.

Melt a stick of butter in a double boiler. Add an adequate amount of cocoa powder. Add sugar to taste. Add vanilla or bourbon for more flavor. Drink warm or let solidify to a bar.

If you add eggs, flour and pecans and bake for 30 minutes you have brownies. Too much trouble.

518 So I'm house plant sitting for neighbors years ago, and I open their door in the dark.

Something shoots across the room and I notice a broken vase near the door.

I slam the door shut and drive our golf cart like a mad woman home and yell for my husband to come help me get whatever the fuck is in the house out.

He grabs a crab net and we run back to neighbor's house.

Turn on the lights, and there's a squirrel in the kitchen and den.  It has torn the shit out of the mini blinds.

Husband instructs me to open the front door while he tries to drive the rodent out.

As rodent flees towards the front door, I went full-Biden and decided we had to capture the squirrel, and shut the door.  (I literally have no idea why I did it.)

Anyhow, husband nets the thing with the crab net and we release it outside.

Tore the hell out of the crab net.

This goober had a pet raccoon he had raised from a baby.  Told my husband, "I even had to teach it how to shit."

Husband:    "How'd you do that?"

Goober:  "You lick them."

Husband:      "Whaaaa????"

Goober:  "You lick their bellies and they poop."

Husband never visited Goober at his home again.

616 A busy news day of combative Congressional Obamacare hearings and Presidential speeches did CNN no favors in primetime last night. The Jeff Zucker-run cable network hit its lowest primetime time result among adults 25-54 in over a year Wednesday despite all the cable newers being up double digits over the day before during Health and Human Services Sec. Kathleen SebeliusÂ’ morning testimony. Between 8 PM and 11 PM last night, CNN had a mere 67,000 viewers among the key news demo. ThatÂ’s the worst its done in the demo since August 10 last year. With the Olympics were on NBC last August, CNN drew just 62,000 among the 25-54s that Friday. Not only was CNN behind rivals Fox News Channel (396,000) and MSNBC (127,000) but also it did worse than sister station HLN (93,000) and CNBC (79,000). The most watched show on CNN last night was Piers Morgan Live at 9 PM which got a soft 83,000 in the demo and 340,000 viewers overall. Overall CNN had 285,000 viewers in primetime last night compared to MSNBCÂ’s 683,000 and FNCÂ’s 2.312 million

A friend of mine had surgery last year, a relatively minor routine surgery. The surgeon screwed up the second part of it. Now sheÂ’s been out of work for a year and her leg is 21% healed as of September. She has three kids under 11. SheÂ’s gotten other issues due to al the side effects of her leg being screwed up. She is in a lot of pain. After so many months, someone talked to her & told her she was slurring her words, etc. SheÂ’s been stuck in the house most of the time, camÂ’t drive except in her city & next one over and canÂ’t be in a car for an hour ride. She stopped taking all her prescription pain meds last month. She had a seizure in front of her middle son. I think heÂ’s 8 at the most and he picked up her cell & called his father. One of the pills she stopped was Valium. She broke part of her face, sheÂ’ll have to or may have had surgery to correct it or sheÂ’s in danger of doing more damage to her face, which is a beautiful face.

663 Look at how many employers just cut back hours or told people they weren't sponsoring insurance anymore.  There has to be some kind of loophole for them to get out of paying any fines.  Part of the law was the decoupling of insurance from your work situation so their attorneys will say that it's unfair that an employer would have to pay any fine if they offered insurance.  When they figure this out, when their lawyers get into court, they'll be able to drop insurance sponsorship completely and pay no fine.  Or they'll be able to offer insurance, the employee will pay for all of it and the employer will have no fine for those who don't take the insurance.  The fines will be paid by individuals.  It's probably a pain in the neck that corporate America would not like to be involved with, they want out.  It was way better when there was major medical for emergencies and everything else you paid for.  With our capitalist system doctors and hospitals would have to compete and they would lower their prices.  Maybe the new monolithic hospital corporations would have to break up as they are now a monopoly.  Maybe the price of medical care in the US, 50 bucks for an aspirin, might then go down to areas everyone could afford.

Note to self: Never ever read Noonan's column before bedtime. She's peeing her pants over The Awesomeness of Chris Christie and what a wonderful speaker he is, how terrific he makes her feeeell, how a nice moderate from a deep blue East Coast state will save the GOP from those nasty Tea Partiers. And an entire flock of moderates in the comments section are agreeing with her "Oh, Peggy, you're so wise! Yes, we need someone who can 'reach across the aisle.'"

It struck me that the Establishment GOP are like self-hating Jews who go out of their way to criticize Israel and are embarrassed by the Orthodox Jews with their funny clothes and religious faith. They have bought into the media stereotypes of mean, cold-hearted, women-hating Republicans and they want so desperately to be loved and hip and cool. "Let's not talk about abortion - we'll offend people! Let's not say mean things about the Dems - we can't hurt their feelings! Let's make fun of the Tea Party! Jon Stewart will like us then!"

I'm going to bed disgusted. Just needed to vent.

665 52 @18- Behavioral study groups are written into owecare. All those question about you will be submitted to these panels . You will henceforce be asked about everything you do. Posted by: Ben Had at October 31, 2013 08:02 PM (MH+80) "Behavioral study groups", i.e., we now have medical SOVIETS. We are living through a Revolution, and I mean Revolution with a capital 'R.' To paraphrase a Russian general's comment to Whittaker Chambers during WW II, conservatism is no longer enough; one must be COUNTER-revolutionary. Counter-revolution is the only adequate response to the Revolution. Nota bene, I am not advocating violence. There are still numerous non-violent avenues open to us. It is, however, important to call things by their right names, and REVOLUTION is the proper name for what we are living through.
