Out: JournOList
In: WeigOList

— Ace

Groupthink.

Indeed, Journolist's only casualty was Dave Weigel's gig at the Washington Post; and then, almost immediately after departing, he founded a new listserv, one dedicated to promoting his writing. Ironically, Weigel's listserv morphed quickly into something Journolist wasn't: a forum in which writers of all political shades and depths talk to each other. Full disclosure: I'm on the list, but I mostly lurk.

To Cox, conversations among journalists are a necessary weapon against "groupthink," which she describes as "the biggest threat to freedom of the press." What she means is that by exchanging ideas, journalists can work together to resist conventional wisdom and the orthodoxies of those in power. Yet Cox does not seem to realize that such coordination among journalists also often creates its own form of media groupthink.

Given that the last list was given mostly to protecting Barack Obama -- thinking up ways to push the Reverend Wright story out of the media, for example -- one has to suspect of the new list of being fairly similar in tone.

Dave Weigel was asked if he'd be asking anyone from Breitbart to join the list. He said he had no such plans at the moment.

Bah,

Cox is an idiot.

In any self selected group of people, groupthink is the default, and all cases will eventually regress towards it.

In this case you'd just get repeated uses of the Heckler's Veto until anyone dissenting leaves out of frustration (alternatively they'll just ignore dissenters until the same happens.)

If you truly want robust debate to avoid groupthink I'm not sure it comes from self-selected groups.  It comes via groups put together by happenstance, who have to listen to the detractors.

Case in point, my own experiences.  The various professional groups I'm a member of are steeped in groupthink, and it's impenetrable to break in and make a dent in it (no matter how hard I try) because they simply won't listen to a noob as it were.

Meanwhile though my department can't get rid of me (without making themselves look bad) so I can tear it up there and the best they can do is argue with me (but they can't chase me off.)  And indeed they haven't. (The other department I worked for last year however, just ended my contract when I threatened to break the groupthink mentality.)

What she means is that by exchanging ideas, journalists can work together to resist conventional wisdom and the orthodoxies of those in power.

Couple of things:

1) Journalists shouldn't be concerned with resisting conventional wisdom and the orthodoxies of those in power.   That's not their  damn    job.

2) Their job is to write things down in a coherent fashion.  Full stop.      They are not supposed to be trying to influence the storyline,   which is what is implied by  "resisting conventional wisdom and the orthodoxies of thsoe in power."

3)   G-ddammit, I hate Journalists.

4) See numbers 1-3 inclusive.

Eh, that actually makes sense.

Many of us 'round these parts are more of the classic liberal type (and/or varying degrees of conservative)

As such we're pretty big on the free exchange of ideas and robust debate.

But that's bad for messaging.  Neo-liberals (and their progressive spawn) however are obsessed with "authority" and "expertise" which makes messaging easier because they just go to the "guru" who tells them what to believe.

Or, they've seen punks like him hanging out on a street corner, cursing and behaving like the punks that they are. I have great hope.

134 Journalists plotting to control the news according to their personal political proclivities is called propaganda.

By the way, propagandists are philosophical cowards. They have no confidence that in factual, honest debate their arguments will win. So instead they form private groups in which they share ideas with like-minded individuals and give each other accolades. They deviously control the media to be one sided in support of their ideas.

Which is why;

#1 People hate and distrust the media
#2 They consistently fail when the ideas and personalities they've pushed (ahem Obama, the PPACA, etc.)

Zimmerman's lawyer is putting the jury and Zimmerman to sleep.

Instead of a compelling, hard-hitting narrative that would set the stage for the evidence portion of the trial, Don West is droning on about minute details that no one in the jury could possibly understand at this point.

If Zimmerman's lawyers continue to be this bad, I expect them execute George with a bullet to the back of the head, and charge his family for the bullet.

For some reason getting pandas to mate in captivity is like pulling teeth. Like they get all fat and happy and decide that humping just isn't worth the effort. Then when they actually get some offspring (after absurd levels of effort on the part of zookeepers) they do something strange like roll over on it or ignore it or something. No wonder the damn things are endangered.

244 OT - in Walmart at midnight on Saturday while they were stocking. There was a actually 1 box of 9mm (50 rds of Winchester) and about 10 boxes of .223 (TulAmmo 20 rd)

Last saturday, my "local" gander mountain had boxes of 9mm (it lasted about 1/2 hour), including boxes of 350 rounds, and the smaller 50 round boxes.
There was also some .22 LR

That gander mountain has had .223 for a few weeks in a row now too.

248 A Davenport man who describes himself as a high school dropout who used to do illegal drugs and drink too much has a website declaring a bid for the seat that U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin will leave open next year. Jay T. Williams, a 57-year-old cab driver, said he has not yet officially filed paperwork with the state to confirm his candidacy, but he intends to do so. Williams isn’t currently affiliated with any political party but he has been “a lifelong liberal Democrat,” Williams says he got his GED on the same day as his youngest son, has managed several small businesses, and honors truth – including his own past. “I wasn’t much different from any other confused, hurt and angry young man,” he wrote on his website. “Yes, I did use illegal drugs, drink too much, lose my temper, go to jail overnight a couple of times and get some probation." “I’m running for Iowa’s US Senate seat in 2014 because our country needs me.” All in all he sounds like a step up from Tommy "the commie" Harkin.

No need to feel left out.  I suspect that we will all get to share in the fun.  A lot of media professionals worked very hard to crank up emotions in order to increase black turn out in November.  Now a jury can either ignore facts and the law to send an innocent man to prison for defending himself or we will have a lot of unfortunate things happening all over the country when the verdict is announced.  I am not making any predictions which way it will go.

I know we have some teachers and teacher's spouses on the HQ, but I feel sorry for y'all.   You're surrounded by some of the stupidest people ever churned out by a Liberal Arts education.

Teacher Training's Low Grade

WSJ: http://tiny.cc/jo06yw

U.S. colleges of education are an "industry of mediocrity" that churns out teachers ill-prepared to work in elementary and high-school classrooms, according to a report by a nonprofit advocacy group that represents the first comprehensive review of such programs.

The study, by the National Council on Teacher Quality, which has long promoted overhauling U.S. teacher preparation, assigned ratings of up to four stars to 1,200 programs at 608 institutions that collectively account for 72% of the graduates of all such programs in the nation. U.S. News & World Report will publish the results Tuesday. They are similar to the magazine's rankings of top colleges, undergraduate engineering programs and business and law schools—which are widely followed but whose methodology some education officials have criticized...

...The council included criteria such as the selectivity of the teacher programs, as well as an evaluation of their syllabi, textbooks and other teaching materials. It said fewer than 10% of the programs earned three or more stars. Only four, all for future high-school teachers, received four stars. About 14% got zero stars, and graduate-level programs fared particularly poorly.

As    has been stated here at the HQ many times,   Education degrees are where the kids go who are too stupid to major in anything else.   It sounds harsh, but it is honest-to-God the truth.  I pity anyone who pursues an education degree because they actually want to be a successful teacher or administrator who can help shepherd young people through their youth and into productive lives beyond grade school.   They're just going to find themselves stuck in classrooms with idiots who can't even spell "binomial," let alone teach it.

293 OK, I realize that I am a little late to the party. I do not buy ANY of that BS about lazy reporters and news organizations. No sir; everything they reported could have been then, and is currently now being dispelled as either an outright lie or gross negligence. Personally, I think that Captain Affirmative Action and his minions are hoping for a little civil unrest resulting from Zimmerman's farcical charges. And I would add that the SCUM is every bit as complicit in this stupid trial having assisted forming and promulgating the narrative, delivered by race baiters and fear mongers like Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakahn, and Holder. I'm not trying to sound like some kind of conspiracy nut, but then again I never thought I would see aggressive undermining of basic rights in this country willingly aided by the GOP either. If your own government is spying on you and is intimidating people based on their political convictions and aspirations, then crafting and promulgating a narrative using the SCUM is not unbelievable. Fuck'em ALL. Whew! I feel better now. Thanks for letting me vent. I need to go have a scotch before the NSA minions get here.
