The Top 102 Non-fiction Stories of 2012

As collected by Conor Friedersdorf (yeah yeah I know). Some of these have already appeared on previous ONTs. And even ones that I just picked out at random were all pretty good reads.

Warning: Some of the stories in Conor's list may contain <gasp> liberal views. If that freaks you out, best to move on and spare yourself the anger and tears.

No. 15 Why Things Fail by Robert Capps
From tires to helicopter blades, everything breaks eventually.
Wired, October 2012

"In our Moore's law-driven age, we expect devices to continuously be getting smaller, lighter, more powerful, and more efficient. All this is great for innovation, but it's terrible for reliability."
No. 57 The Meme Generation by Matt Labash
Hide your kids, hide your wife, hide your husband. The end is nigh.
The Weekly Standard, Jun 2012

"Rarely in history have so many truly smart people applied their intelligence to something as dumb as aggregating and propagating LOLcats."
No. 58 The Expendables by William Langewiesche
It's the dark romance of the French Foreign Legion: haunted men from everywhere, fighting anywhere, dying for causes not their own. Legionnaires need war, certainly, and Afghanistan is winding down. But there's always the hopeless battle against rogue gold miners in French Guiana . . .
Vanity Fair, Dec 2012

"An old legionnaire told me about a lesson he learned as a young recruit, when a veteran sergeant explained dying to him. He said, 'It's like this. There is no point in trying to understand. Time is unimportant. We are dust from the stars. We are nothing at all. So fuck off with your worries about war.'"
No. 85 The Landlord's Tale by Bert Stratton
A member of a maligned class explains, among other things, how he keeps up the neighborhood.
City Journal, Dec 2012

"I used to feel guilty about charging rent. I hadn't done anything to deserve it, other than maintaining a building-a building I hadn't even built. Now that I'm middle-aged, though, I feel fine collecting rent."

Against Autonomy

Now you might think that the benefits of liberty and freedom would be pretty much self-evident to all Western educated people but you'd be wrong. In fact Bowdoin professor Sarah Conly thinks personal autonomy is a bad thing and has written a whole book, Against Autonomy: Justifying Coercive Paternalism, arguing against it.

No this is not a joke:

I argue that autonomy, or the freedom to act in accordance with your own decisions, is overrated - that the common high evaluation of the importance of autonomy is based on a belief that we are much more rational than we actually are. We now have lots of evidence from psychology and behavioral economics that we are often very bad at choosing effective means to our ends. In such cases, we need the help of others-and in particular, of government regulation-to keep us from going wrong.
A classic example of Kip's Law.

And guess what her next book is about:

I've now started on my next book, tentatively titled One: Do We have a Right to More Children? We tend to think of regulating the number of children people may have as morally reprehensible.

And given her previous book you can predict exactly what her opinion is. #NotEvenPretendingAnymore

Someone Alert Clueless Joe: Even shotguns use AR-15s in self defense

Deputies say Mendoza took several items and fled from the home on foot. He returned to the farm and placed the stolen items behind a barn. They say he then stole a pickup truck belonging to the farm and returned to the home he burglarized stealing more items and a shotgun and AR-15 rifle.

Det. Williams with the Polk County Sheriff's Department tells KOIN 6 News that they believe a piece of the shotgun was caught in the trigger area of the AR-15. While crossing the field the truck hit a bump causing the weapon to fire once striking and killing Mendoza.

5 Clearly Fake News Stories The Media Told You Were True

Deadly alar, the coming epidemic of heterosexual AIDS, and a lion killing 42 midgets in a Cambodian ring fight are just some of the media's fake stories that don't appear in this article.

"Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward-reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know."

"..the grocer's apostrophe is a weeping pustule on the shining face of English."

You know who loves grammar pedants? Their mothers. Well mostly, but not always.

Yes, I know, the grocer's apostrophe is a weeping pustule on the shining face of English, and people who don't know the difference between "less" and "fewer" should be marooned on a small, ice-covered island in the Arctic Sea. You, as a person of intelligence, are entitled to that opinion. I will defend to the death your right to think that "less" and "fewer" should only be used in very specific ways (even though history proves you wrong), and I will even agree that I don't understand how the grocer's apostrophe came to be (though apostrophes can be tricky, and we know all how weird English plurals can be). What I cannot defend, however, is asshattery in the name of grammar.

You may think you are some great Batman of Apostrophes, flitting through the dark aisles of the Piggly-Wiggly, bringing Truth and Justice to tormented signs everywhere! But in reality, you are a jerk who has defaced a sign that some poor kid, or some poor non-native English speaker, or some educated and beleaguered mom who is working her second job of the day, spent time making.

..The reality is that many of the bits of grammar that we think of as wrong are actually just a matter of preference.

And aren't even grammar per se - they're just preferences in usage that are mostly arbitrary, often regional, and rarely make any difference at all in terms of meaning and communication. But they do help keep those ignant hoi polloi out of your fancy soirees and such.

Oh and then you have PJ O'Rourke's guide to speaking proper English:

A) At the present, I am impecunious.
B) I ain't got me more than no three nor four million in the dang stock market.

One of these statements will open the doors of society and culture to you and one won't.

Rob Lowe Isn't Sorry to See Hugo Chavez Gone

And calls him what he was. After watching Lowe in Parks and Recreation I've realized that he's naturally funny and should have gone into comedy much earlier in his career (Tommy Boy was an early hint).

Oh and one of the horde makes an appearance as well.

11 Words and Phrases Popularized by Teddy Roosevelt

1. Nailing Jelly To The Wall
Definition: An impossible task.
"Somebody asked me why I did not get an agreement with Columbia. They may just as well ask me why I do not nail cranberry jelly to the wall." -TR, 1912.
4. Weasel Words
Definition: Soft and ambiguous language.
"One of our defects as a nation is a tendency to use what have been called 'weasel words.' When a weasel sucks eggs, the meat is sucked out of the egg. If you use a 'weasel word' after another, there is nothing left of the other." -TR, 1916. (According to a 1916 New York Times article, Roosevelt was accused of plagiarizing the term, which appeared in The Century Magazine in 1900. Roosevelt said he heard it from a friend years earlier.)

10 Good Evening Horde, Once again here in Massachusetts they have made a tiny storm into a huge blizzard. I went to get my hair done this afternoon at one. The shop was empty except for one other client. Everyone else was afraid to drive. It was a very light mix of rain and snow. The weather forecasters have nothing else to do but to try to alarm the entire northeast. I looked out my window two minutes ago, it's so light I cant' tell if it's rain or snow. I'm watching FNC, Greta had Rand Paul on. I am so glad that Rand and the other young conservatives have stood up for liberty!

11 Grocery signs.

Kroger used to have signs over in the bakery with packages of their cookies saying "10¢". Everyone thought they were ten cents per package, but in very small letters it said "per cookie". Of course Kroger didn't sell them by the cookie, only the package for about 2 bucks.

20 Good evening. So...autonomy is overrated? Well, people do frequently make bad decisions. Doing drugs, drinking and driving, becoming college professors and the like. What you have to understand is that people are capable of learning. Yes, we might stick the knife in the electrical socket once in our lives but never after that first time. Usually never. True, some folks *never* learn. Some people spend their lives being dependent on drink, drugs and tenure but the vast majority of us are perfectly capable of learning from our mistakes and becoming better for it. In other words...life, how does it work?

I'm convinced that a BIG reason young adults make such poor choices today, is that they were sheltered from the consequences of bad decisions as children...

We are so concerned about them getting hurt, that we don't let them do even wimpy stuff anymore... thus they don't learn that mistakes can suck....  until they are adults when the consequences are much greater....

And with many... by then.... its too late to learn.

Ding ding ding.  Mom and Dad have always bailed them out of trouble so they never learn from it, or even become convinced that they will never suffer for their behavior.

I think it also creates risk adverse adults.  If you've never experienced negative consequences, you don't know how to deal with them, or with failure.

Rob Lowe, from Dayton, Ohio  (as was Martin Sheen).

Rob's Dad was a Captain in the city police force when he retired.  We are about the same age, and I might have briefly known him (?) when we were teen agers, because we were attending a public school financed arts program at the same time.

He used to be somewhat of a jerk  (but then, that's true of a lot of us), but seems to be maturing nicely.

Alas her flying saucer uses Tesla batteries and a Fisker-Karman transmission.  So as she hops into it to subjugate Washington DC, the anti-water seals made by UAW allow in sea air which corrodes the battery terminals and dissolves the transmission.  So when last seen the flying saucer was trailing smoke and parts as it crashed into Lemuria.  Thus capsizing and sinking Lemuria, again.

Wasn't there an actor that said there was an actor in Hollywood that gave every public appearance as being a Dem, but in private was a conservative? This actor even said the "undercover actor" would contribute to Dems because he didn't want to have his career destroyed. What Sarah-types don't realize is that there are a lot of people a lot smarter than her, who would end up as "deciders for everyone else" before she would, if such powers were ever granted to the government. Right now, she's just competing in the "who can write the most asinine book" job market. If she got her wish, she'd be competing in a much more cutthroat job market and she would lose.

89 From one of McCain's aides: "Senator McCain is obviously well aware of the politics of this - he just doesn't care," said one McCain aide. "He's doing what he thinks is right. Unlike many of these guys, he's actually been involved in a few national security debates over the years. He knows that jumping on the Rand Paul black helicopters crazytrain isn't good for our Party or our country, no matter what Twitter says." Fuck. John. McCain. ******************** He likes the attention. In his eyes he wants to viewed as a moderate 'negotiator' between the two extremes. He has no principles - they change like the wind. He cares about one thing: himself. Now that he has stolen the microphone back from Paul, he'll try to steer the GOP to a compromise on the financial mess. Hey Morons- Mrs. Muldoon and I coined a new word when we were in Durango earlier this week.

(background briefing: Durango is a small mountain tourist town with a small town college and a ski area, so it is largely populated by and the restaurants staffed by ironic hipster type trustfunders.  There's a whole sort of insouciant, ski bum, mountain biking enviroweenie vibe going on.)

So, we came up with a hybrid term for the mountain version of the ironic doofus-    "hipsterbilly"

Yeah, McCain really is sore about not being the center of attention.

His whole "maverick" act , stabbing other Republicans in the back,  all his famous reach-across-the-aisle nonsense, it's all clear now.  It was all about being the center of attention.

What a pathetic egomaniac.  Really.  And Lindsey Graham is his enabler, his co-dependent.  Their con is playing this game to get asked onto the talk shows, the Sunday morning TV news.  And now, all of a sudden, Rand Paul does something really dramatic and has electrified a lot of the base like nothing in years.  And McCain is jealous like a little school girl.

What a small man.

Keep in mind that Dr Amy Bishop was a respected colleague until she spent too much time in the real world

The Durango-Silverton narrow gauge train does not make its run in the winter.  We were there  this week  for work  so no real time for tourist activities.  My grandfolks lived in Durango  BITD  and I took the train ride when I was 8 or 9 years old.  Not since. We did take the drive over Red Mountain pass north of Silverton this week. That's always a fun knuckle clenching trip.

169 DENVER (AP) — NORAD headquarters in Colorado were evacuated for about 4 1/2 hours Thursday after employees found five suspicious packages, but the command's control room team was working at a backup location about eight miles away at the time and no essential missions were disrupted, officials said. Employees became suspicious because something about the packages looked "out of place," said Jeff Bohn, a spokesman at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, where the North American Aerospace Command is based.

181 Children Forced To Support Transvestitism in Massachusetts The Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Dept. of Education has proclaimed that boys must be allowed to use girls’ bathrooms or locker rooms, and visa versa. Their purported excuse for this declaration brings up the currently popular fear-mongering about “bullying.” In other words, those who believe that boys are boys, or that girls are girls, are necessarily considered to be wrong, and the state via the public education system must correct that; the idea that boys are boy, or that girls are girls, should not be considered “normal,” but simply “cis-gendered” and “cis-normative” as opposed to “trans-gendered” (or any other new “gender” they come up with). 186 I certainly learned, back in my public speaking days re nuclear power, that the media NEVER correctly reported what I, or others, said about the issues.
I guess it has become obvious to me that professional politicians use PR professionals to actually write the press releases for the media.  That way they get it right.  They also publish the unabashed biased information.
I'm not sure conservatives are doing this as consistently as the libs do.  They should probably start.
I know, for a fact, that Senators (etc) plant news in the major papers, just so they can offer some pet legislation and debate it.  I personally witnessed that multiple times during my time as a senate staffer.

Now, he will get his day in COURT?  Question... CIA is NOT a Law enforcement entity.... can they even arrest someone?  If not, then if the CIA grabs someone and hands them over to the FBI, in an illegal operation (ie kidnaping him from another country)... does that not constitute an illegal arrest?

Back in the day, I was startled to hear someone say that 40% of all videotape produced ended up as porn. So I asked around. Anecdotally, at least, anyone involved with selling videotapes nodded and said, "yep, 'bout that".

Posted by: cthulhu at March 08, 2013 12:18 AM (kaalw)

The reason why VHS beat out Betamax in the 80's was because of pron. So Sony made sure to sign up the pron studios for BluRay whereas Toshiba didn't for HD-DVD. Guess which one won the high def disc race. Pron is the King of Video.

.....a good salmon run off of Ventura......

How was it last year?

When I still lived in CA, I went out several times a year, either on party boats, or with a friend of mine that had a commercial license out of Moss Landing. Sometimes we'd hit em, sometimes not. Even when the slamon weren't playing, hooking shark, or mackerel was always fun. Salmon, of course, was always a thousand times better...if you could pull them past the gauntlet of hungry sea lions.

Going to be an interesting legal question.  When he made those speaches for Bin L and Al Q, America had already declared War on them.

He made speaches in a foreign country... dong the EXACTY same thing Politicians were doing in America.... making speaches saying we are going to kill the enemy, and trying to get people on our side.

Speach is Protected.... sooo.... can you Prosecute, under US Law, an ENEMY for making speaches saying Kill Americans?  Outside of America...  AFTER you have already declared War on them?

I think we jumped the Shark on this one.... UNLESS they have evidence he actualy planned an op.... or carried a gun.

After WWI, they got the bright idea to make war illegal, so it'd stop -- and we got the League of Nations. After WWII, the LoN was looked at as an ineffectual stupidity, so we got the UN instead. The problem is that there is such a thing as an "outlaw" -- one who puts himself outside the law, or "laws of war" -- and the only way to ensure compliance is to be ready to go in and get 'im -- and when someone does, they're bound to break the "laws of war" themselves because they're unworkable by design.

I would love to see your works in person.

Two years ago, the BH and I went to Saint Petersburg, Russia -- partially because of the inspiration from an art exhibit. It seems the Musee d'Orsay in Paris needed huge refurbishment (it is a repurposed train station, after all...) and was persuaded to send some of its best stuff on tour. Not the usual attic-gleanings and mold-covered crap from the basement -- top-drawer masterworks -- everything from Whistler's mother to Van Goghs to Monets and Manets and Seurats (who really could paint, who knew? -- they had the studies for his pointillist works). And one that just took my breath away was a picture of a train station that just pulsed with life and light and energy....but you look at the reproduction in the catalog, and it was merely beautiful. Something about the brushstrokes caught the light and changed with your position....even your breathing....and made the actual painting something magical.

The experience impressed us with a renewed focus to see actual works and not just browse the internet for paintings.

A boast? An deflecting insult to put you on the defensive?

Many gays seek to obfuscate morality by magnifying their own persecution complexes.

God has plenty with which to judge me already, but sodomy will never be one of them.

Doing more searching, I think it's the right work -- but the drab, blurry picture would certainly make you think otherwise. With the actual painting in front of you, there are little glints and sparkles to suggest movement -- and, where there is blur, it obscures the sparkles like steam attenuates reflected sunlight. A beautiful, beautiful painting....but, sadly, not so photogenic.

We hit it at the perfect time -- our last full day was City Day -- and the weather played along very nicely. It was gloriously, heart-achingly beautiful the entire time we were there.

Where are you staying? It's a capital city, so there are restaurants from the whole of the empire -- dining is superb. And there was a very interesting tension between being open about the evil empire and the current regime.

the world passed me over,  and, I so small in the day to day stories, was left to be missing.

Try to make it to City Day (in May). To give you some idea of how wacked the seasons are there, tulips are fully in bloom and lilacs are just starting.

There is a whole lot more than just the Hermitage there -- although it was one of the reasons we went. Prepare for total overload, BTW, at the Hermitage -- for example, there are 15 known works by da Vinci and 2 are in Saint Petersburg [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Leonardo_da_Vinci]. Even more wild, there are central asian nations and empires that you never hear of represented in the collections, and they've got stuff from Egypt and Greece that isn't run-of-the-mill. You thought you knew European art? Ha! You thought you knew major antiquities? Ha! You thought you knew civilizations? Ha! The Hermitage blows through all that.

And make sure to do the Russian Museum -- home of a painting of one of the most glorious "FU"s of all time, the reply to an Islamic Sultan's "submit or die": "So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won't even be herding Christian pigs. Now we'll conclude, for we don't know the date and don't own a calendar; the moon's in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day's the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!" First, do not go in early spring -- a couple of people get killed every year or two when the blocks of ice fall off the faces of buildings. Second, do not go during the actual white nights (when the sun doesn't set), because the city is full of drunken Euro assholes. Third, regard official statistics as being extremely suspect. Fourth, take some time to explore the Peter and Paul Fortress on Hare Island.....especially the prisons, used in czarist times, used in soviet times, and now exhibits.

St. Pete is an extraordinary city -- just amazing.

There's so much strange there.....it's a city designed for conspiracies. Each city block is comprised of a couple of buildings with an atrium and limited (controlled) entrances.
