Of course, knowing my place around the HQ, I eagerly acceded to wishes. So, here goes . . .
PERSPECTIVE
As some of you may know, when I'm not slinging hooch down at my local watering hole, I take pictures. And one of the key elements in composing photos is perspective, which also happens to be a key element in navigating life. So, in a sense, photography has a way of helping me to see the world through the eyes of people who experience it differently from the way I do simply because they approach it from a different time and place. As conservatives and libertarians, we're often called upon to try and reason with people with whom we disagree, such as idiots and lunatics. This can be extremely stressful at times, but it helps to keep in mind that those people's perceptions of a given situation are vastly more influenced by the angle from which they view it than they are by the facts surrounding it.
Sadly, not everyone who holds a given view on a matter of controversy does so forthrightly. In the case of idiots and lunatics, you're somewhat obligated to forgive them as their opinions have been brought on by mental infirmity, and thus, can't be helped. On the other hand, some people will adopt and maintain a controversial position for the sake of controversy itself. That's because they're outrage-peddlers and publicity whores, motivated by nothing more than whatever attention they can garner from stupid people by saying stupid things loudly.
OBJECTIVE
Fortunately, there are people in the world whose views haven't yet been solidified by bone-deep stupidity or craven opportunism. They're generally too young to have been thoroughly browbeaten by the domineering, hate-filled adults in their lives, or are too intelligent to be jawboned into accepting and parroting purported wisdom that doesn't accord with their own thinking. As such, they're able to remain objective when confronted with choices and are capable of cutting through the hooey of identity politics and cheap emotional ploys to arrive at sensible solutions on their own.
EMOTIVE
Now, none of this is to say that there's anything inherently wrong with emotion or unstinting loyalty to ideas. In fact, that's the foundation of the very notion of patriotism -- a trait celebrated by conservatives of every stripe. And I'm hard-pressed to come up with a more rewarding aspect of the human condition than the heart-swell brought on by unconditional love and unblinking devotion.
DESTRUCTIVE
Unfortunately, human beings are prone to all manner of failings, many of which are brought on by an overweening love of self. The desire to indulge our appetites and validate our sense of vanity in defiance of all commonsense has been the downfall of countless great men and women down through history. People are infinitely capable of convincing themselves that their greatness precludes them falling victim to such things as basic human physiology:

If, on the other hand, you manage to overcome your fear of heights by riding a pneumatic swing over a 1,300-foot cliff, you will have proven that you have more balls than the Cubs' bullpen:

I have McGyyver amnesia. I made this thing a couple of years, per internet intructions, to help me do something and it worked - just an old electrical cord carefully separated partway into two lines, with the plug remaining on one end, and alligator clips affixed to each of the separated wires.

Gingy -- Very happy for you. Went through a lymph node biopsy a few years ago. All I could do was try to keep telling myself I wasn't too worried about it. It almost worked. Thankfully, I got the all-clear, too. Still, it took a day or two to finally relax.

Ohio (Obama by 166,272 votes out of 5.59 million cast) I know about 15 of those missing "voters"...
That's the crisis we no longer make the case as Reagan did to a better educated generation of students that prosperity is earned and a rising tide lifts all boats beyond paying it lip service.
There is a populist sounding case to be made for the free market, and I feel we have not made it for 13 years.

yankeefifth, my moms neighbors are the stereotypical welfare parasites; gangsters to boot. Crips specifically. I've drank beer sith them and spent a few hours on several occasions talking with them. They are not stupid. But, they are caught in a 'system' that has a very compelling incentive to join and a very severe punishment for leaving.
My point is that you should never underestimate someone, especially a potential adversary.

All of them mix nicely together and pop flowers out of the greenery....except the passionflower, which runs up to the top and attempts to cover the entire surface of the vines in a dense mat. So, every so often, I have to get on a ladder and tear off everything that looks like a passionflower.
The problem is, every time I've tried to do that this year, these humongous black bees show up and start hovering around the passion vines so I can't just tug them off. They may just be trying to gather one last round of pollen out of the soon-to-be-yanked flowers, but they're intimidating (in large part 'cause I'm up on a ladder). We jokingly refer to them as "guard bees".
Well, CDR M's sequestration story made me think, as the afternoon faded into evening -- "what if the guard bees are facing sequestration cuts?" Right after my last posting, I zipped out, grabbed the ladder, and went tearing through the passionflower.....and nary a guard bee showed. Boy, won't they be surprised tomorrow.

I have been ranting about this for two and a half days. Quanell X, leader of the New Black Panther Party in Houston is planning a protest on Sunday at 4 through River Oaks, a neighborhood with 20 million dollar mansions and their own private security, but not gated. Most Posh neighborhood in Houston. A second group want to counter protest. The mayor, a huge prog, is silent. The chief of Houston PD is sympathetic to the protesters, at least in the press. It has the makings of a huge riot. Or not.
I was thinking today that people wont show up, and whoever does will be watched pretty carefully. I mean, who would willingly put themselves in harms way like that? Now rumor has it that they have imported 2-3 bus loads of NBPP people. Counter protesters think they may draw as many as 1,000 people from across Texas.
I am not in River Oaks, but I am about 5 minutes away and I do not want the spill over by me. We are not gated, and do not have private security. Trying not to be alarmist, but it is pretty alarming

kalneva, I don't think size has much to do with birth on the whole. It took 26 hours for the first one and 34 with the second with back labor and I'm no where near DP's size. And, as far as I know, she has no kids, only dogs.
Think I weighed 170 when I had the first one back in the day. Can't remember on the second.

Framing (fuckin hard work) roofing, elastomaric (sp) decks in SoCal, building Morman churches, worked on the re-do of the city pool here, heavy equip on the mill tailing project. Then got smart and went to school and started working for attys. I hate those fuckers. Now just looking forward to retirement.

So, as best I can tell, it's essentially a paperweight unless I put smaller OS on it. I'm thinking of putting a Linux distro on it, but wonder how much of a pain in the ass that's going to be, since there's no CD/DVD drive (it does have an SD slot and a few USB ports, though). And, frankly, I don't have a clue when it comes to kernel hacking/recompiling and all that wacky stuff Linux users seem to know.
Yeah, it's ancient and obsolete as hell. But, the thing actually runs pretty well, is in good shape, and could conceivably come in handy with the right setup.
Anybody got any suggestions as to how I might be able to extend its life and get some use out of it?

IIRC, you can load a LINUX distro off a USB thumb drive and reboot to that distro....so there's that. A greater question revolves around what you might do with such a beast.You might investigate its annual power requirements and see whether it might power a home automation system or something.

Jean -- I think it does allow that. I was looking around to see if there was a way to do a clean XP install from a USB drive, and there are ways to do that by loading certain software on to the thumb drive. I couldn't definitively tell any possible deaths from the trailer. I just watched it a second time and I think they probably revealed too much about at least one bad event that happens at the prison in which some people die but it didn't look like any main characters did, just possibly some of the Woodbury castoffs. Then again, the show's whole premise is about death so we have to expect various characters to be killed off every season (except probably Rick and Daryl).

My friend did have an HP mini tower and it didn't even last a year before it went to shit. I agree with you. It just ended when I think everyone expected some huge battle between the prison and Woodbury, with the Governor being killed during the battle. Instead, it just ended. Then again, the second-to-last episode was very good. I think the season finale should have incorporated parts of the last two episodes of the season instead of splitting them into two different episodes. It would've been much better, even with the same ending.

You're probably right about it not being worth the hassle in the long run. HP/Compaq are notoriously proprietary about a lot of their hardware. I've probably already wasted more time on it than its worth. But, well -- I'm one of those people who do that sort of thing.

Are you sure of that? What about getting a new hard drive and then cloning it. It will take everything on the old drive and copy it to the new drive and will work just like the older smaller drive. I did that with my old computer with a 400 gb drive to a 1 tb drive.

Yep. I was actually selected to be part of the jury pool for the trial of the ringleader, Lemaricus Davidson. He's the one who got the death penalty. I wasn't selected for the jury, though I had to complete a 25-page questionnaire on which I stated matter of factly that I thought he was guilty based on the evidence I had seen reported by the Knox News Sentinel (though I also wrote that I could put that aside to judge the case fairly).

I really doubt that the tech has changed that much. I'm going to assume that even the minis were using SATA connections since the older IDE cabled were kind of bulky. I'm going to guess that its either got a full size hard drive or a laptop hard drive in it. And if not then HP is even fucking dumber than I give them credit for.

I'd recommend it, as I've lived in the area for 6 years after living in the Northeast for the rest of my life. If you do, I would just suggest that you live in West Knoxville. You can even go to areas outside of the city limits, like Farragut, Oak Ridge, Powell, etc., but homes can get pricier in some of those areas, especially Farragut.

No media members outside the area want to be blamed for fomenting racial strife when the perpetrators are black. Uhhh...he has been sick, but his recent scans were ok. He lost his job a while a go to and it really punched him in the gut. Can't say I don't sympathize, but he was warned and had all the signals the ax was dropping for a few months. My sister and I wanted to get him to go back to Charleston, where he'd be closer to family. Since I'm drunk I'll just let it all hang out.
He never got over Mom's death. I was her primary caregiver. After she passed away, he was diagnosed with colon cancer, also stage 4. I was also his primary caregiver. I was out of work for about 4 years taking care of them both. As tough as it is for me to say, the whole thing changed me, and not for the better.

He didn't have to change the bandages on my Mom's chest wound, which went all the way to the chest wall, that was visibly growing every 6 hours.
