Well the good news is that most of the stains came out but I'm guessing Ace still won't be getting all of his deposit back.
But hey let's not quibble over who stabbed who or which moron/moronette broke the lamp - we're on to a new year here.
Here's where we are:
* U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
* Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000
* New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000
* National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
* Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:
* Annual family income: $21,700
* Money the family spent: $38,200
* New debt on the credit card: $16,500
* Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
* Total budget cuts so far: $38.50
Now most households would go bankrupt fairly quickly at this rate but then this household can print money and make you accept it.
I'm pretty sure the birds and the black cat had some kind of arrangement going on.

Your Government at Work: Spearmint
The USDA has some new rules regarding spearmint oil:
This rule revises the quantity of Class 1 (Scotch) and Class 3 (Native) spearmint oil that handlers may purchase from, or handle on behalf of, producers during the 2012-2013 marketing year under the Far West spearmint oil marketing order. This rule increases the Scotch spearmint oil salable quantity from 782,413 pounds to 2,622,115 pounds, and the allotment percentage from 38 percent to 128 percent. In addition, this rule increases the Native spearmint oil salable quantity from 1,162,473 pounds to 1,348,270 pounds, and the allotment percentage from 50 percent to 58 percent. The marketing order regulates the handling of spearmint oil produced in the Far West and is administered locally by the Spearmint Oil Administrative Committee (Committee). The Committee recommended this rule for the purpose of maintaining orderly marketing conditions in the Far West spearmint oil market.
How did we ever get along without the government regulating the spearmint oil market - it was pure chaos I tell you!
Richard Francis Burton was a hard-living combination of Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt. By 1853, he'd already swashbuckled his way through enough adventures for several lifetimes. The British explorer, writer, ethnologist, polyglot, and spy had spent his youth traveling Europe and drinking in its culture, learning as much about history and poetry as he did about sword fighting and bordellos. He'd worked undercover investigating his fellow English officers' behavior in Indian brothels. And he'd penned travelogues and anthropological studies detailing his adventures.
But Burton craved more. During an extended leave from the military, he began devising one of the greatest adventures of the Victorian era. Burton wanted to be the first Englishman to walk into the forbidden city of Mecca.
Read the rest to find out how he pulled it off and the rest of his adventures which include searching for the source of the Nile and translating the Kama Sutra.
These Fists Were Made for Punching
Human hands evolved so that men could make fists and fight, and not just for manual dexterity, new research finds.The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, adds to a growing body of evidence that humans are among the most aggressive and violent animals on the planet.
...Gorilla hands are closer in proportion to human hands than are other apes' hands, but they and no other ape -- aside from us -- hits with a clenched fist.
The researchers additionally point out that humans use fists during threat displays. There is also a difference in body size between males and females, particularly evident with hands and arms. This, Carrier said, is "consistent with the hand being a weapon."

This is the argument that needs to be made. Put it in simple terms people understand. Telling people we have a 1.6 trillion deficit is meaningless since 90% of public school graduates don't even know what a trillion means.

Heh. Epic Kitteh fight.
The white cat is the republicans right?
The first bird is the media (constantly pecking and nitpicking) and the second bird is obama and the dem party above the fray...
The black cat is the American public exercising its vote.... blindsiding the republicans.... basically kicking the sh*t out of 'em...
The two birds and the black cat then chase the republicans off into the abyss...
Poetry man, poetry.

Student apartment living, Isla Vista, California -- went away for Easter Break. When the first roommate got back to the apt, the windows were black on the inside -- from flies. Sewer line had plugged beneath our apt, anything that went into the drains upstairs came up in the kitchen sink and overflowed onto the kitchen floor. Never flowed further than the hallway, but created prodigious amounts of food for flies.

He tells her to take her pants, she does, and he starts rubbing her thighs.
"Do you know what I am doing?" asks the doctor?
"Yes, checking for abnormalities." she replies.
He tells her to take off her shirt and bra, she takes them off. The doctor begins rubbing her breasts and asks, "Do you know what I am doing now?", she replies, "Yes, checking for cancer."
Finally, he tells her to take off her panties, lays her on the table, gets on top of her and starts having sex with her. He says to her, "Do you know what I am doing now?"

Early on, they had dialogue to the effect that they couldn't open the gate for trivial purposes because the energy required was a horrific cost per instance.
I suppose that got a lot better once they had the Naquadah generators and a good supply. Sneaking Naquadah setups into some power plants around the country should have serve nicely to offset the entire cost of the program.

People LOVE conspiracy theories and even cling to them for comfort. The most obvious example is the JFK assassination. It HAD to be a conspiracy, otherwise the worse fears of a nation that couldn't protect its leader from a lone nutjob with a cheap rifle in the midst of the Cold War would unsettle the children. If there was a conspiracy, surely the conspirators would someday be exposed and brought to justice, right? Just like in the movies!
During that same Cold War, the USAF created Project Blue Book to investigate UFO sightings. Not so much to cover up or confirm, but to make the Russians think we were hiding UFO existence from our people, not experimental aircraft.

A classic followup to the misdirection used against the Germans in th ebuidup to D-Day. Or the claim that British spotters were detecting German bombers at extraordinary ranges due to high consumption of carrots rather than having much more advanced use of radar than the Germans believed existed.

The far-reaching agreement will have lasting implications for the tax code, future budget battles and the balance of power in Washington. It raises income-tax rates for the first time in almost two decades and fulfills Mr. Obama's signature campaign promise to prevent rates from rising on the middle class. Not since 1991 has a Republican in Congress supported such a move—a challenge to its brand as the antitax party.

Acetone and Dry Ice slurry works real well. We used that all the time in cold traps and cold baths in the lab. I think this gets down to -64C (dry ice temperature)
Also Methanol and Dry Ice slurry. ( I think this gets down to -30 C). IPA is actually a little expensive for this.

Well, I wasn't happy with the party picking Mitt, and I wasn't happy with Mitt picking Ryan, and I'm entirely unsurprised to find Ryan turning squish at the last minute.
As I've said before, anyone thinking that a Romney-Ryan victory would have meant anything other than minor polite technocratic tinkering around the edges of Fedzilla was succumbing to delusion.
However, there's a whole large bloc of unelected people who get to vote, who can't be vetoed, who haven't voted yet, and whose votes will be very consequential. You may be hearing their hoofbeats in the distance shortly.
Who are they? The bond market vigilantes. Same bunch who blew the British out of the ERM in 1992, same ones who flattened Argentina in 2000, same who put paid to Greece in the last three years. They're on their way here.

Does the author of that sentence understand that the conjunction "but" is used to introduce contrast, not agreement? If gorilla hands are more like human hands than other primate hands, you would expect - not be surprised - to see them used in similar fashion. All research is bullshit.

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who made him their president"

On an individual, "micro" level I agree with you. Individuals can and do use credit responsibly. But on a cultural, "macro" level I can't agree. Our reliance on credit has led us to where we are today. If we are serious about wanting to change the culture, then this is one thing that we have to change about ourselves and stop relying on credit to finance our lifestyle, because that is essentially what is happening in DC right now.

The way I look at is that debt has its uses, for example taking out a mortgage to buy a house, or taking out a loan to buy a new piece of machinery if you own a business. In the latter case you expect the machine to make money for you, which would help you pay back the loan.
Agreed. My credit card bills are from my time unemployed and the first month of my job when I hadn't yet received a paycheck. Other than that, I keep the credit cards for emergencies like car repairs, or I pay it off at the end of the month.

People like to use household budget analogies with the federal budget. Okay, that is fine. But it also cuts both ways. If I have a salary of $50k but I have $250k of mortgage debt, student loan debt, and consumer debt, and I am "okay" with this level of debt burden, why should I consider it "outrageous" that the federal government has approximately the same ratio of tax revenue to national debt? (which it does, BTW) The point here is to trigger a shift in the way people think about debt. If people aren't willing to tolerate a 5-1 debt-to-income ratio in their own lives, they are going to be less willing to vote for people who don't mind such a debt burden on everyone.

Debt spends just like cash or savings, but it is really a different animal. If debt is "in-lieu-of-rent", like a mortgage, it's no big deal. If debt is explicitly against reasonably assured future earnings -- like STEM student-loan debt, equipment financing, or stock portfolio margin debt -- it's no big deal. If it's debt for some transient pleasure -- like blackjack, gender studies PhDs, scoring drugs, paying off gangs, widescreen LED TVs, or hookers......well, son, you've got a problem.

But it *is* a big deal, even for "good" debt like a mortgage, because it promulgates a cultural way of thinking about debt. The idea is not to debate the merits of a particular type of debt, but to nudge the culture away from debt in a general sense, with the idea that over time it will result in the election of politicians who actually do want less debt, not more. Now I'll be honest, I have a mortgage myself, I have a very conservative mortgage (15 yr fixed rate), so I am not morally opposed to debt, but I think that if we are to change the culture so that we actually get to a sane position nationally, we have to stop promoting debt as just another financial tool. It's not.

The problem is not that debt is just another financial tool -- it's that handguns are just another security tool, table saws are just another woodworking tool, and dynamite is just another earthmoving tool. Tools are not toys -- they have impressive abilities to get things done but must be utilized in an educated and sensible fashion.

"Right on a state highway" is not on my list of desirable places to be.
Not even way out in the sticks.
In an Argentina scenario, once the federal teat ceases to flow, the ugly urban masses are going to explode outwards in looting, raping, killing rage. On stolen fuel, running on adrenaline and stimulant drugs, some of them will get all the way to the sticks. You will not want to be found by them.
I went to a party at a rural place being rented by a co-worker. If I had not had his written directions, there would be no way in hell I would ever have been able to tell that there was a house or a driveway. THAT is the ideal for which to strive.
Note that overhead imaging is fucking up everyone's privacy in rural areas. You have to plan around that now, too. Ask some careful questions.

The point here is that we'd like to create a class of citizens such that, if tempted with the idea of taking out $100k of student loan debt in order to pursue a degree in Central American Cultural Studies (or whatever), that they would refuse the offer, finding the very thought appalling. We aren't there, and we aren't going to be there in the short term, but we *can* be there in the long term, by treating things like student loan debt and other types of debt much more skeptically and harshly than we have been treating it in the past. That's the point.

I've never seen snow fall -- and I turned 50 a couple of months back. I've seen snow on the ground -- even outside my house -- but I wasn't awake to see it fall.
And you probably missed my snow story, so I'll tell it again. My mom was a professor of mathematics at a JC in the LA area, and was on the textbook review committee -- so we had science texts for bathroom reading during most of my "formative years". In just about every single science textbook, there was a module about "phases of matter" -- and every single one of those suckers had an illustration of snowflakes......magnified to be about 3" across.
Since I was growing up in Southern California, I had little personal experience with which to evaluate this -- so from the age of six to about the age of 20, I figured that 3" snowflakes came hurtling out of the sky like the throwing stars in the "Kung-fu" television series, and it was a damned good thing that I only saw the shattered remains laying on the ground in the morning....'cause those suckers looked dangerous.

Can you imagine paying upwards of $1,000 to take a class on "The History of Pornography and Prostitution", which at minimum wage will require about 100 hours of labor, which for a part-time job amounts to about 5 weeks worth of work, most likely unpleasant work, and then the grade for the class that you worked so hard to pay for, won't even show up on your transcript as a legitimate grade? That's not really what I'm arguing for - I'm arguing for a more skeptical view of debt, that is all. Again I'm not morally opposed to debt. I do want to nudge the culture away from debt-financed lifestyles though because I think it will lead to a more fiscally sane government in the long run.

First time I saw snow falling was Manhatten in 2000. I was there for 48 hours on my way to Germany to do some work for Byte at CeBIT. Growing up in Thousand Oaks, snow was something that you grabbed some altitude for but never expected at home.
December 2011 was the first time I ever saw snow falling where I lived. First time for snow in Castaic since something like 1948, because warmening.

One of the worse things about Episode III is Obi-Wan's final battle with Anakin. Anakin is crippled and on fire. If Obi-Wan was really true to character as a Jedi and thought of Anakin as a brother he would have mercifully killed Anakin. Instead because of what has already been filmed, Obi-Wan has to go against character and leave Anakin there. Which makes Obi-Wan a real bastich.

Naw, it was entirely intentional sabotage of the Empire. Obi-Wan knew Palpatine had a serious stiffy for Anakin and would go to great lengths to keep him at his side. But Anakin was a serious bad luck charm. Anybody that embraced him would ultimately regret it, even if it took a couple of decades. Because it turns out that bring balance to the Force is best expedited by completely fucking up the shit of any major Force adept.
Letting Anakin live was playing the long game.

It's kind of like the commie ideal of absolute fairness. If you cannot make everybody rich, make everybody poor. Ergo, if you cannot give everybody the high midichlorien levels to be a Force jockey, eliminate the Force using population.
Balance.
This is how you know Valdemort wasn't a commie. If he was he would have had wiping out the whole magic using population as his goal, making everybody a muggle and thus all fair. But his ambition was just the opposite. That this would be better achieved by improving fertility among magic users and encouraging incorporation of mudbloods rather than killing many of them outright was a fatal flaw in his plan. His real problem was one of demography and failure to recognize that was his undoing. That and entrusting his soul to an idiot snake and an assortment of random objects.
