I Guess You Really Can't Quite 3D Print Guns
New Technology is So Cool - Except When It Comes to Guns
The Start of 3D Printer Control?

The British and Their Bizarre View of Americans
I think, at root, the problem is one of mirroring. They say "aluminum", we say "aluminium", but both can be shiny and reflective surfaces. So, no matter how intently we examine the US, we cannot help but see our own features staring back at us. This phenomenon simply doesn't occur when we look at the French, the Vietnamese or the South Africans - all remain properly other.
Only America and the Americans have this ability to derange us with their capacity to reflect our own image. Not that they do this intentionally, really, it's something we do to ourselves. And it follows that what we also do to ourselves is to relentlessly equate America with Americans, and the US government with its electorate - conflations we wouldn't dream of making in the case of the German or Greek peoples.
Have You Ever Heard of a Book called "The Master and Margarita?"
'Well, as everyone knows, once witchcraft gets started, there's no stopping it'
On a hot spring afternoon in Moscow, a poet and an editor are discussing the non-existence of Jesus. A polite, foreign gentleman interrupts their debate, claiming to have known Jesus in person and to have been present when he was condemned by Pontius Pilate. Moreover, he predicts the editor's death - a bizarre accident which happens exactly as the foreigner foretells. The Devil has arrived in Moscow and, along with his demons and a large black cat
The Master and Margarita is a wonderful book. I read parts of it in Russian as an undergraduate and it's been about 10 years since I've re-read the very well done English translation which means I'm past due. BTW the Rolling Stones' 'Sympathy for the Devil' is pretty much based off the first chapter
Stressful Jobs and the Value of Efficiency
There's something vaguely comic about everyone trying to brag about how stressful their job is. Personally, I blame television. Shows like ER, The West Wing, and Scandal have glamorized the notion that killer jobs are friggin' awesome and super-sexy. You know what's really awesome? Doing your job so well that you can relax on a regular basis.
Everything Wrong With Prometheus in 4 Minutes
Prometheus is one of those interesting but frustrating failures that had all the parts to be great yet steered itself into the ditch of sukk0r . You can enjoy this video even if you haven't seen the movie.

Chirstina Applegate and a mode of transportation: reasons enough to look in!
Also, deny though you may, you will meet Jesus when you die, then you will be judged. Try to get over it now then have to pay for it later.

Ah. How can I piss Maet off this night?
Nah. Its been too depressing a year so far. Things just suck too badly.
Enjoy the ONT, Horde. I am headed a few miles south to see what Mexico is sending north.
And maybe. Just maybe, the USBP or ICE will send someone to hit the smugglers coming north. But it hasn't happened lately.
See you thru the PVS-14s, 'rons and 'ette's. Its been freaking cold of late.
But I have my hate to keep me warm. And if AtC is nice, a few of her Ravage to make the smugglers scream. That warms the cockles, if nothing else.
Cheers.

It's a sad story but, at the end of the day, the twins were in their mid 40's, judged to be mentally competent, and decided to commit doctor-assisted suicide on their own volition. The libertarian side of me says, "so be it." That they are considering allowing minors to do the same, though, is pretty sickening.

I've seen the car before, lots of times. It looks like 12 other sports cars on the market now.
The C-6 looked dated, but the C-7 decided to mix parts from 10 other cars.
The Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro all hit home runs because they went the retro route. If the C-7 brought back the Sting Ray badge, they should have gone with a C-2 Sting Ray retro look
I was afraid the interior redesign would be one of those controls on three stalks and the steering wheel, leaving a barren looking dashboard, but they went too far the other way. A 767's cockpit looks less busy, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a button for turning the radio on and a separate one for turning it off

Materials availability and economy. A solid slug of metal of suitable dimension may not be available, or might be very expensive. The casting process allows you to use odd size scraps. Dead disk drives, aluminum cans, old ladders, etc can all be suitable raw material donors.
If the shit really hits the fan, the govt will be monitoring purchases of virgin bar stock.

Well, to just totally sidestep the point of the item on the British view of Americans, the reason we say aluminum and everyone else says aluminium is because some cousin in the Rambler big tree mispelled it on the patent application for his method of producing it.

That's the essence of the 80% lower receiver. The part is usually forged of aluminum, then requires a small amount of final machining. I guess casting the rough part would work almost as well, but forged Al is higher strength.

No police exemption for the 7-round magazine? Really?
That was largely the point of many police departments switching from revolvers to semi-auto pistols. They were getting out-gunned in the streets.

Eh, you're probably right. I was just using the phrase pounded into my head during the Kevorkian craze. It was appropriate for his suicide machine where the terminally ill person would push the button and kill himself (assisted by Dr. Death).
This would be in stark contrast to his last "client" who indicated that he didn't wish to go through with euthanasia but Kevorkian killed him anyway unequivocally making his act one of murder. That little nugget of information was pretty much buried. I only know of it since I caught a segment on CourtTV many, many years ago when they played the actual footage of it happening.

Supply and demand can produce spikes, but sooner or later they equilibriate. In the meantime, any un- or under-employed 'rons should start looking into making stuff -- like 7 shot magazines with the form factor of 30 that use cardboard spacers for the 23 missing rounds. -- oh, and the same spring.

Oh, I'd spend about a year in the barrel if I try to post anything here.
It's a Springfield XD9 (4-inch barrel). It's not as sexy as an HK or some of the others, but it was more in my price range and felt perfect in my hand. And I came home and researched on about 4-5 different website comment sections and found A LOT of positive comments from guys who had dissed any Springfield handgun until they tried this one. Also read very positive reviews from gun mags.
It's not a Caddy, but it will be just fine for me.(So please don't groan too much). Gun shop owner was heard telling some gents who came in for auto rounds that he had sold everything he had and he had some on order which was also sold. He said that the manufacturers he deals with will take at least a year to catch up.

Make 30 round mag. Put cardboard around spring so you can only load 7 rounds before running into cardboard. Sell as 7 round mag. Customer takes home, throws on barbie, incinerates cardboard (or soaks in water if you make block out of soluble substance instead)....instant 30 round mag.

The Springfield XD is an excellent weapon and will serve you well. The important thing is that it fits you well and you are comfortable shooting it. Now, get some training. Take a pistol shooting class, not a concealed carry class (take one of those as well) and actually learn how to shoot. It will make a world of difference.
It's not that Delaware has restrictive gun laws. They're actually closer to Virginia as far as ease of purchase, open carry, etc. It's just that there are probably 15 gun shops in the whole state and maybe 2 gun shows a year statewide. Not much of a chance to stock up.

Yeah, the MFM completely glossed over the fact that the victim made it clear that he did not want to proceed. They re-framed the entire story as a "right-to-die" case and the pro-euthanasia crowd dutifully tied their knickers in twists. This is the same shit the MFM pulled with regard to Clinton's impeachment. It wasn't about perjury and obstruction of justice. Nope! It was all about "a stained blue dress." Assholes.
In the video, the victim was hooked into the chair, yelling incoherently (as he did when he backed out two times prior), and Kevorkian yelled back, "It's too late now! It's too late now!" No, it fucking wasn't, but he continued on to murder the guy. I had forgotten about his "artwork," though. Yech.

I wasn't trying to criticize the basic idea, just pointing out a flaw in the plan as outlined.
As long as the temperature didn't go over the temper heat for the spring, you should be fine - however, the difference is only a few hundred degrees and it would be very, very easy to get too hot with an open fire, the more so because the outside would get hotter than the inside, so by the time the inside was hot enough to burn up the paper completely, the outside would probably be too hot and residual heat would continue to heat the inside even after you took it off the grill. I make a lot of my own woodworking tools, so I have some practical experience with heat-treating metal using a torch, forge, or kitchen oven.
Putting it in an oven for half an hour at 500 degrees would work much better - ovens don't really get hot enough to temper springs, and are much more controlled than an open flame.

I'm wondering if you go to a public range will they be doing spot checks?
Will "perps" get felony busts?
Posted by: sven10077 at January 16, 2013 11:58 PM (LRFds)
I was wondering that myself. I'm pretty close to joining a gun club so that a couple of my toys would have access to a long-distance range. However, Frau Fienstien would have said toys registered/confiscated, so I'm surmising that a "spot check" with them and me on the range would immediately render me a federal felon. Thank you, Democrats!

Here's what he accomplished. He dropped his drawers on national television and invited Congress to wipe his ass with the Constitution. It's an embarrassment to the office, an offense against his oath, an insult to the citizens, and an erosion of our national character. The big debate is whether to point and loudly scoff or stay silent and allow decorum to prevail -- but any idiot coming forward to support this odious perversion is walking into a potential free-fire zone.

Actually, LinuxCNC CAN account for the backlash, as can MACH, the windows equivalent. A serviceable 2-axis CNC machine can be built out of one of these mini-mills with just a couple of stepper motors and their controllers.
That said, the vertical (Z-axis) on them uses a rack-and-pinion arrangement, and the stability is notoriously bad. If you are doing anything with even medium tolerance, you pretty much have to put some kind of lead screw in there. The horizontal lead screws are not very good quality, little better than a chunk of all-thread bar. And the screw pitch is neither metric nor conveniently imperial, so the math gets ugly fast.
So you're going to have to replace them sometime anyway, you need to add the vertical leadscrew regardless, replacing the whole set at once is less trouble, not a lot more expensive, sets you up more or less permanently, and saves you trouble down the road. Why not?

Think of a cheap Chinese vise and the best vise you've ever used. The cheap one will take a 1/4 turn before the vise face moves a good vice will immediately move with the turning handle. Or like slop in a steering wheel of an old car. Electronics have a hard time accounting for that slop because they read this many spins clockwise this many counter. If there is a 25% error to start movement you are fucked.

You cant climb cut on a machine that has backlash. You have to conventional cut. The flutes of the endmill have to be pushed into the material . To negate backlash on a precision job you have to approach in a + move for the axis involved.

Posted by: t-bird at January 17, 2013 01:01 AM (FcR7P)
Last year, I did a couple of field-trips up to Type A Machines in San Francisco -- great folks, BTW, very friendly and helpful -- and if you're thinking of a standalone 3D printer, theirs would be an excellent one to get. As a result, I got a feel for what objects I would prefer to make with 3D printing and what objects I would prefer to mill -- the G-Code for both is very similar (the inside and the outside are separated by one "pixel"). Hollow, nested objects -- 3D printing, hands down.
But mechanisms? For one thing, 3D printing is "iffy" on scale. The whole lingo of machining involves part-to-part interoperability...3D printing is more geared to one-offs.

Again, I'm new to this, but http://littlemachineshop.com/Info/MiniMillUsersGuide.pdf has "On light mills like the mini mill, use conventional milling for all but the lightest cuts. Then, take your final cut of one or two thousandths of an inch using climb milling for the best surface finish." -- I had figured that and a bit of experimentation would do well for me.

Most everything that was done in the past just took a guy that really knew his crappy by today's tolerances machine. If you spend enough time experimenting what errors your macine produces (assuming they are reproducible) you will be able to do most anything.
Like shooting if the aim is off to the left and you have the ability to compensate for it you'll always hit the ten ring. Though if the errors are random in nature you are fucked.

"Isolate and Concentrate." This is how you start these things I'm guessing without pouring over the history of 1930's Germany and the USSR for obvious references.
Isolate all gun makers and bullet makers, concentrate them in defined states that at 1st blush want them doing businesss there then...... take out all family owned industries across the country, then you can have total control over the remaining major producers thru your crony state that you have bought and paid for in the meantime.....dang, we be boned........

If you're thinking of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKWj_ppMoyo, it does nicely highlight their extended bed dimensions.
If anyone is really interested the problem with 3D printing is that you're essentially trying to build dimensional, measurable items by squirting toothpaste. It's a big deal when software has a feature to randomly start loops with the plastic instead of having them all aligned at a seam. Bridging gaps by letting extruded plastic droop and building more plastic on it actually works.
The only big criticism with Type A is that they only do PLA because ABS needs a heated stage. ABS is what legos are made of -- food grade possible, stable for decades. PLA is some BS pseudoplastic the greenies worship because you can compost it. I've sent them info on quick-and-easy heated stages, but haven't seen it.

Yeah, I'm beginning to wonder if I made a dire mistake by breaking my rule about buying a new platform in its first year. This time next year I may feel differently but meanwhile I could have gotten away a lot cheaper if I just wanted to play Wii games in the backward compatibility mode.
It would be a lot cooler if you could play the Wii games that don't need motion input on the GamePad screen. That would make it handy for using on the treadmill.
But I've blown larger amounts on more worthless items in the past.

well, more than likely Iwata loses his job (though Yamauchi is the one who should be getting the boot) and Nintendo goes the way of 3DS in Panic Mode which worked out quite well for them (as it rules 70% of the game market in Japan). If nothing else, you'll probably get some free Ambassador games

I saw that. Corn plastic. Kind of rules out anything of value.
I just haven't caught the 3D printing bug yet.

There's some undeniable coolness there -- including the off-patent lego thing -- http://boingboing.net/2005/11/17/judge-to-lego-your-p.html .
But there are also significant limitations, which many folks are glossing over.

Bob Beers is currently on the Las Vegas city council, BTW.

Former Ohio Democratic congressman Dennis Kucinich has signed on with Fox News to be a contributor, the network announced Wednesday.
“I’ve always been impressed with Rep. Kucinich’s fearlessness and thoughtfulness about important issues," Roger Ailes, Fox News' chairman and CEO, said in a statement. "His willingness to take a stand from his point of view makes him a valuable voice in our country’s debate."
Stop giving these people paychecks and platforms, you stupid Fox fncks!

I don't think they can duplicate the 3DS rescue with just a price cut and some eStore goodies in this case.
The 3DS really had only one serious negative: the price. Otherwise it's a pretty nice little machine for its target market, much as the DS was back when it launched in 2004. Developers see plenty of opportunity there to do stuff that is unique to that platform.
But while the Wii U has some unique features, especially the GamePad, a console is going to be judged much more by developers on horsepower. The Wii U has a more modern GPU than the existing consoles but is only on par or somewhat below them on the CPU side. Leaving aside the GamePad second screen gimmicks, the consumer isn't seeing anything he cannot get on the competition with massively greater libraries. (The Wii U can draw on the Wii library but that isn't saying much beyond the Nintendo franchises.) This is only going to get worse as the new competing platforms launch.
Looking at the GameStop site listing of upcoming Wii U titles, the number of items that are either exclusive to the Wii U or will be best played there is rather short. It isn't as bad as the N64 launch, which was easily the most barren of any successful platform in gaming history, but I suspect the market is far less tolerant today than back then.

I'm very much a entry-level machinist, so I'm looking to test the waters with a CNC'd SX2. If I were to have a production demand, I'd ramp to an SX3 (or more) immediately.
Would you go some other direction for proof-of-concept machining?

2TB is the max for something-or-other, so it's best to do multiple 2T.

It has quite a lot of capability I'll never use at home. I'm wondering if I shouldn't sell it for something less loaded but populated with at least a pair of 2 TB drives.

The problem seems to be that under current standards, it maxes at 4T -- but if everything in development works out as planned, you might get 8T.

I'm pretty confident a 3 TB drive will work. The HCL lists several with an admonition that a firmware update may be required.
Posted by: epobirs at January 16, 2013 10:59 PM (kcfmt)
The best price I've seen so far but I'm holding out for it to get down around $100. The 1 TB models will be coming out soon and that should drive down the prices of the existing models a bit.
Also, Western Digital is getting into the hybrid drive business, so there will finally be some competitive pressure.

So, after rebates I should have 6 TB of NAS for about $215. Plus whatever I attach to the USB ports down the road. Especially if I upgrade my printer. And I'll have a pair of 3.5" USB 2.0 enclosures to reuse if they aren't too resistant to opening and resealing.
Not bad. Thanks for the research, Dude and Dark Lord.
Which means I've got a lot more anime to download!
