Books That Have Changed Your Life
I've been trying to think of particular books that have had a major effect on me but I've read so much over so long that after a while the sources of inspiration begin to blend together.
The only two I could quickly name off-hand would be Voltaire's Candide and Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach. I'm sure there are many others but dangit I just can't think of them when put on the spot.
Feel free to add in your own personal life-changing books.
MLK, Non-Violence, and his Arsenal of Guns
Most people think King would be the last person to own a gun. Yet in the mid-1950s, as the civil rights movement heated up, King kept firearms for self-protection. In fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
...William Worthy, a journalist who covered the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reported that once, during a visit to King's parsonage, he went to sit down on an armchair in the living room and, to his surprise, almost sat on a loaded gun. Glenn Smiley, an adviser to King, described King's home as "an arsenal."
Aaron Worthing points out that King wasn't quite as dedicated to pure non-violence as he always claimed in his speeches. This may make him somewhat dishonest but also more human and practical - and ultimately a better role model for real people than Gandhi was.

Just to be clear - the proposed "better role model" was a disingenuous, plagarizing womanizer. Awesome. Seems like he might have glossed over a few parts of Ye Olde Bible en route to becoming a preacher.

Life Changing books?
After Virtue By Alasdair MacIntyre. After I read it I began to understand culture's decay.
The "companion book" (as I like to say) is A Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter Miller Jr. Companion in that MacIntyre makes heavy reference to it in his opening chapters, so reading both helps you understand MacIntyre's train of though.

Yes, "The Fountainhead" was a bit of a life changing book. I read it over 30 years ago, and it got me to read a lot more that Ayn Rand wrote.
I have come to reject some of the things that she believed in, but reading her writings did make me realize that ideas have profound importance. People adsorb all kinds of stupid ideas through the vacuous culture around us, but I feel innoculated against a lot of this, because once you see the evil underlying the seductive stupdity, it becomes a lot easier to resist.
That, and "Starship Troopers" that I read about 45 years ago, and have re-read about several times since, and re-read occasionally when I have lost faith in the fundamental nature of man, and I see how far our culture has fallen, which Heinlein predicted.

Team we feed the beast who wants to devour us.
We watch their shitty films that undercut us, we watch their news that hates us.
If the Mexicans can have Telmundo, the african-americans BET, and the uber efette faux hoity toyts PBS where is OUR voice?
The African-American and Cuban, Chinese, and mexican communities have the answer we need to concentrate and grow our own economy and make those corporate bastards lust after our lost business.
Anyway I'm tired, cranky, and about to have a nyquil bomb with a kleenex chaser.
There is nothing more valuable to you than you or by way of honor and love your family and oath friends.
Everyone able has the potential to help, and we need to start working to have a renaissance in the Red States by using our political power to attract, create, or grow business, and fight like hell to thwart EPA stealing our land, water, and mineral use.
Run Red and let's get to work showing our model is better, teaching people to strive and dream and grow.
Time, skills, and mentoring are a resource....I am tired of the blue sucking us dry and hating us while they do it.

but other books that changed my life we odd, perhaps. Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy gave my my sense of humor.
A Princess Of Mars taught me what i wanted in a man (and a dog. I eventually found my Woola and named him Waldo)
Lucifer's Hammer made an impression as did The Long Arm of Gil Hamilton and Ringworld.
The Hero And The Crown and The Blue Sword likely put me on the path to my ethnic studies and taught me what manner of person i wanted to be.
and then i read Joseph Campbell and "Hero with a Thousand Faces" and realized WHY. He and Mercea Eliade changed how i viewed mankind and formed my worldview as it is today
Howard Schwartz also gets partial credit with Gabriel's Palace, but that was just the first book of his that i read and its been a love affair with his writing ever since.

Life changing type books? Can't think of much. Ones that made an impression, or influenced somewhat yes. No fiction, though. "Alive", perhaps. Suetonius' "12 Caesars" I've probably read more times than anything else. Maybe "A Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich". That's probably the closest that any may have had on actually altering outlook. But it was more of a sleeper thing.

kids learn a lot of reality on a farm, or a ranch, working hard to keep plants and critters alive so they can eat. Teaches you there are some problems that you can't talk your way out of, and can't be BSed over. Side benefits, you learn to shot and pray too.
I think is why the bad guys wanted all kids out of ranch and farm work ASAP.

Which has been done our whole history.
We have a lot of work to do.
I also suspect as i wrote earlier that we have to accept that we need to fight for the poor who want out harder and more openly and put the people who are so TRUCON they can't accept not all people are as hard as they are in their place to a degree.

Limbaugh's lifted stuff from here, or his staff has and fed it to him.
We should get a round robin "blight of the day" thing going where we push to abolish minimum wage.
That is how they are holding the economic recovery down....
extend jobless bennies and then raise the minimum wage in a down economy chasing off potential low level manufacturing or resource exploitation work.
None of this is rocket surgery.
prior to FDR no depression lasted more than a year and a half.
It took a socialist to make it a national hobby for a decade.

I actually liked "Footfall" a lot better than "Lucifer's Hammer".
Somewhat similar them, but a lot more twists and turns.
On Heinlein: He was a Methodist, as was Virginia, his third and last wife, the love of his life (she was a ginger, too).
He mocked the hypocracies of organized religion, but I think that he was a deeply believing man. He mocked religion a lot in "Stranger in a Strange Land", where Michael invents his own religion, and really mocks religion in "J.O.B. , A Comedy of Justice". Robert having fun again.
If you want to understand him a little better, find a non-fiction book he wrote back in the '50's called "Tramp Royale", where he and Virginia sail around the world on tramp steamers. A lot of fun, they had a lot of fun. And they loved to drink and have fun. People seemed to like them wherever they went, and made a lot of friends, because they were a lot of fun. Except in South Africa (which they loved because of the scenery and hated because of apartheid) and New Zealand (which they pretty much hated because is was a socialist nightmare, but then it has changed since then, I guess).

I don't find hookers adorable. Adorable is for puppies and children, not grown women who've gone back for third and forth helpings of the dick buffet while on camera.

There is J who seems to oscillate between passing college and not, while desiring to always be at a con or in a mosh pit. Then there is E, he is the sarcastic angry slacker who never does anything. H was wearing a dog collar while she busily did another furry sketch, asked her if she wanted to tackle book cover but she has shown no interest. Across the booth from H is S, she is blond with multiple piercings who just exists to orbit H. C1 is a big teddy bear of a guy, easily going nowhere. C2 is a smaller teddy bear but is always being dominated by H, E, C1, and others. C3 is probably the only one who will make anything of himself, amateur videographer who is studying Chinese in college. Finally for special snowflake mention is Brony Boy - skinny black guy with goatee who is living for his PS3 this Friday while wearing a Rainbow Pony hoodie [baby blue hoodie with a rainbow mane on the hood and little baby blue wings sewn on back].
This is the future it seems. I am going to pull the covers over my head and wish this world away.

I concur. No such thing as 'price gouging'. Raising prices keeps one customer from buying the entire inventory...and depriving all others. If the price gets high enough, other suppliers will move in and balance will be restored.

Has there been irrational behavior on their part? Damn straight.

Yes back then the KKK were Democrats. But if you look at the areas they arose out if, they are in Republican hands. There is a segment of the Republican Party that is based on White resentment. They don't mind welfare, they just don't want non whites to get welfare.
If it makes you feel better, I feel the Democrats are racists as well. In fact the v Racist wing of the GOP are Ex White Democrats. It's not a coincidence.

According to the Amercian liberal doctrine, back in 19XX (date changes per the topic), Democrats and Republicans all secretly changed titles...but staggered it over a couple decades.
Hence, Bull OConnor - who labeled himself a "Democrat" - was actually a Republican in 1961. However, two years later, JFK - who labeled himself a "Democrat" - was actually a real Democrat until he died in 1963. On the other hand, Klansman Robert Byrd - who labeled himself a Democrat - was actually a Republican, but never got around to changing his party.
This is actually what liberals truly believe!

We people in areas that don't get a lot of snow tend to freak out when it comes, so they go nuts at the grocery store by buying enough food for a month.

Fappy: Hi. I'm Fappy McFaperson, and I'm a troll.
Crowd: Hi, Fappy.
Fappy: It started out innocently enough. Posting goatse links on Slashdot as Anonymous Coward. But that wasn't enough. Soon I was posting porn links on Christian sites, and gay porn on kids sites.
Then I thought I'd found trolling nirvana, the Ace of Spades. I trolled mercilessly, day and night, under multiple names from multiple IP addresses. It was all I lived for.
Eventually, it took over my life.
I lost my job at the comic book store, my mom kicked me out of her basement. But I kept going, trolling from the Library, getting a quick hit off a stranger's laptop at Starbucks.
Then, one evening, it happened. I was trolling Ace's as usual, when there was a brilliant flash of light. For a moment I was completely blind. Slowly my vision returned. I could see that I had been badly burned, almost like sunburn and electrocution had a mosh pit on my skin.
Then I noticed the smell, a mixture of ozone and my own failure. I knew then that I had hit rock bottom, and invoked the wrath of the TB3K.
I gave up trolling that day. It's been six months, and every day is a struggle. But as God is my witness, I will never troll again.
Scene shifts to crowd as they rise and beat Fappy to death with their chairs.

On the other hand, Klansman Robert Byrd - who labeled himself a Democrat - was actually a Republican, but never got around to changing his party.
This is actually what liberals truly believe!

Of course, there is a certain amount of truth to the matter -- as in "Merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative."
According to Wikipedia (yeah, I know), "The Democratic Party evolved from Anti-Federalist factions that opposed the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton in the early 1790s. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison organized these factions into the Democratic-Republican Party. The party favored states' rights and strict adherence to the Constitution; it opposed a national bank and wealthy, moneyed interests. The Democratic-Republican Party ascended to power in the election of 1800."
So, yeah -- the Dems that currently believe in unbridled Federal supremacy, tramples on states' rights and the Constitution, has wholly compromised the Fed, and is peppered with Geithners, Corzines, and Lews.....originally opposed all those things and had "Republican" in its name.
Hearing Archie and Edith sing, "Mister we could use a man like Andrew Jackson again..."

The next time I run into a liberal spouting this, I'm going to have to grill them on how Democrats are able to give Republicans racism cooties in a way that makes Democrats pure as snow on racism. 100% of Democrat racists switched to the Republican party and infected them with racism? Really?
I actually ran into this on Facebook a few months ago. It was amusing.

where did you get what you got?
Posted by: yankeefifth at January 18, 2013 02:26 AM (Z9EHQ)
So I've been thinking about this for a while, and researching various stuff out there -- "Little Machine Shop" is a great resource, BTW, and I'd love to support them more if they didn't share my state. So I picked up an actual paper mag -- "The Home Shop Machinist", and it's got 4 Harbor Freight ad pages.....but they're wildly different from the stuff I'm used to seeing (and I live down the street from one). They've got a 20% off coupon -- 57325540 -- and a mini-lathe coupon -- 72859383 for $100 UNDER what they're big advertised sale is. So I saunter in to the HF store and they have NO FREAKIN' CLUE where there's a mini-mill in stock (confirmed with HQ later) but they have piles of the lathe. And, yes, the lathe is $100 off list (and it's a real list, I was pricing it for a while)....while the coupon is $200 off.
Then I look online, and the minimill is $100 off to $500, and it accepts the 20% coupon to $400. I spent $150 on a Hitachi circular saw a while back.....and here this is a precision metal mill for $400.
I know I'm going to get scrunged for the tooling, but for now I'm oddly gleeful.

Especially this part;
"In both substance and process, the bill which recently passed at the governors urging and with the support of our legislature will become infamous for several reasons. Notwithstanding the lack of a concise goal it will truly accomplish, these primarily include the lack of transparency, debate and comment from the governed they serve. Our government agreed to suspend those wise measures to pass and enact a law they deemed necessary and proper. Where did they get such power to subvert the people and our Constitution? Why did they rush it through and fear the peopleÂ’s review? Those are questions we should all be asking ourselves and legislators at the moment."
More frightening is the governor believes this type of behavior will appeal to a national electorate...
