Hey all - I'm back after a week in Chicago at the Automate Show i.e. lots of robots, 0 degree weather and sampling various ethanol blends. Still recovering...
And mucho thanks to all the fill-in hosts who kept the USS ONT off the shoals for yet another week.
We Took a Car to the Moon - Three Times!
Sure the Lunar Roving Vehicle's top speed was only 8mph but that's exciting enough when you're in 1/6th Earth gravity.
124:58:52 Duke: The suspension system on that thing is fantastic!124:58:54 England: That sounds good. We sound like we probably got enough of the Grand Prix. We're willing to let you go on from here. Call that a (complete) Grand Prix.
124:59:03 Duke: Okay. (Pause) Man, that was all four wheels off the ground, there. Okay. Max stop.
And took some dash cam footage along the way:
In just the last two months Americans have bought enough weapons to outfit the entire Indian and Chinese armies combined. And 67 million(!) guns have been bought since Obama took office.
Throwing Sand in the Gears of Obamacare
John Nolte is just following the law:
Here's the two plus two: Starting next year, you can wait until you're sick to purchase health insurance. And if you do so, you cannot be denied or even charged a higher premium price. Here's the four: Because the ObamaCare penalty to be uninsured is much cheaper than purchasing insurance, why not do exactly that?As I laid out in this piece, because ObamaCare allows me to game the system in this way, for the first time in over 25 years, I'm an uninsured-American. Going forward, my plan is to pay the annual penalty, which is ridiculously cheaper than insurance, and only purchase health insurance should I get sick.
As soon as the masses figure out this option under Obamacare - that there's even less of an incentive to purchase health insurance than there was before ObamaCare passed - that's how the system crashes.
Merimna and the Provocation of Weakness
The perfect metaphor for the situation created by president Obama was created by Edward Plunkett in his classic short story The Sword of Welleran. In it, a fabled city rich with treasure is defended largely by the memory of its past glory and strength. But now the brigands suspect that the great heroes standing firm upon the wall are but fakes. One evening a pair of raiders, their lives already forfeit climb the wall, and still sick with fear approach the figures whose deeds still struck terror in the hands of the bandits. And they find them nothing but statues.
All across the board a wide variety of people are beginning to suspect something similar to what Halsey found in 1944. That under the bombast and veneer of invincibility the Obama administration is a shambling, incompetent, hollow shell. It has self-admittedly lost control of its borders; it is unable to pass a budget and now for all the world to see it cannot even protect its own diplomatic missions.
Jim Belushi Doesn't Appreciate Chick Advice
.and Jenny was sitting in the passenger seat. Here comes the test, guys, for a successful marriage: She lifts her hand oh-so-gently, sticks her finger out, and points at the next street and says, "Why don't you turn here? It's shorter." I stopped the car, pulled over to the side, took off my seat belt, did a full, dramatic turn and looked at her in the eye. I said, "I think you're cool, but never, ever ever tell me where to go in a car. Never point to a street, never tell me which way is shorter, never talk to me about directions while I am driving my car. Never make a sound like an 'oof' when there is a car coming near us. I am the master of my car. I am in charge of machinery. This is my Batmobile. Robin doesn't tell Batman where to go. I will decide, right or wrong, which way we are going . But I still think you are cute. I like you."
On the other hand he's been married to Jenny for 17 years now.

You Can Have My Kittens When You Pry Them From My Cold Dead Arms
Environmentalists want to make New Zealand kitteh-free:
Morgan called on his countrymen Tuesday to make their current cat their last in order to save the nation's unique bird species. He set up a website, called Cats To Go, depicting a tiny kitten with red devil's horns. The opening line: "That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer."
And the good news is that you won't probably won't have to euthanize your kitty immediately:
He doesn't recommended people euthanize their current cats -- "Not necessarily but that is an option" are the site's exact words. From the Morons:

I like Nolte's idea except I have kids and I don't have this luxury. Also, isn't bankrupting private insurance his ultimate goal? Make everybody dependent on the government teat.
Hillary has blood on her hands and is seriously looking bad. Just seeing that bumper sticker picture of her is bad enough. Her voice is one that reminds every man what they hated about their ex-wife, ex-gf.

Ok, I agree he'd have done MUCH better to say that BILL clinton would've had the economy fixed by now.
It's a tactical botch, but I don't think we need to worry about Paul Ryan selling us out for Hilary, given that I have doubts about her health in 2016 given her recent serious problems (concussions are always serious, esp. the older you get), and elderly women's lack of popular appeal.
Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at January 27, 2013 10:15 PM (Y5I9o)
Actually the concussion is the least of Hilary's concerns, her alcoholism is the elephant in the room, pardon the pun. The media covered it up when she was in Arkansas and at the White House, but in the last year or so when there was chatter that she might challenge or not back the JEF, suddenly all the pictures of drunk Hilary started to surface.
Cat is now out of the bag, and it will be hard for the MFM to put it back in, but they will try.

On top of that he only experience is calling up the taxi company to shuttle poor patients from the emergency room of her expensive hospital to an inner city butcher shop. What else has she done besides dismember lobster at a breakneck pace?
She has no experience at anything and she doesnt have the charisma of Barack Jesus christo Obama. Once she opens her mouth its all down hill.
The only reason she is so popular is because the either keep her mouth shut or keep it stuffed with lobster so she cant talk. She is going to atleast have to be a senator for 4 years before she tries the Obama Returns bs. Hopefully by then she will have ass cancer and drop dead or aliens will land and put us all out of our misery.

I was out in Montrose the summer of 2011 for the first time in 19 years and could not believe how much it had grown. I think it's the California influence.
I still like Gunnison, it doesn't see to have changed too much. It gets freakin' cold there during the winter but I would move there in a heartbeat if I could find a job out there.
I like Cortez, because of the climate. My wife has allergies and when we were out there they completely cleared up . She was SOOOO happy. It's very dry and arid
\
Durango is another town that has grown a lot. I think it got Californicated, too.
My favorite little town was always Ouray. It's gotten a little more built up, but still seems kinda folksy when it isn't the weekend and full of folks from the Front Range.

Paonia is still small and is the western slope's pot producing mecca. A friend of mine hunts in that area and told me that he always carries firearms as you never want to get in between a Paonian and their weed production.
I came from Los Angeles and then NY so housing prices are all relative. You can buy a whole lot of house here in Junction for $200,000. I couldn't afford a drive way in California right now unless it was in some shitty neighborhood.
There are a whole lot of cowboys and girls here that will not take kindly to any gun grab. Liberals are minimal here and largely ignored.

Posted by: jeremiah God Damn Barack Obama the Mother Fucking SCoaMF wright at January 27, 2013 10:38 PM (+OTLF)
It was more than that. A large amount of people in the 80s thought Madonna was hot. No, I wasn't one of them, but it was way too many people to say they were just gay.
The reasons were:
1. It was the 80s. Different standards. Big hair and a lot of make up were considered sexy back then. She wouldn't be the only women from back then who was considered hot that was no big deal today.
2. She advertized that she was hot. She was considered cool and popular. Nobody was going to say "hey, she isn't really that hot."
3. She banged anything that moved. People confused this with being hot.

Hey, it's the ONT so I can rant about whatever the hell I feel like, right? So here goes, and don't get too offended, but I've been pissed at "good conservatives" what never have examined their own belief systems for inconsistencies for a good long time. And I use cigarettes and smoking as my example.
I'm no spring chicken, so I've been there every step of the way on the anti-smoking crusade, and it's classic Alinsky. Isolate, then ridicule, then demonise. And "good conservatives" fell for the whole thing, one step at a time. I remember being able to smoke any damn place I wanted to, even places where I though it would be stupid to do, like elevators (old ones still have ashtrays built into the cabin) and clothing departments.
Then it started. First by isolating, ridiculing, and demonizing the product, cigarettes. Then asking for "common sense regulations". Nobody objected. Next by isolating, ridiculing, and demonizing the manfacturers for the products. Following success in that, who could object to punishing the companies for making a legal product and profitting from it. Lastly, make smokers themselves into the "other". All along, I've watched non-smoking conservatives unthinkingly get themselves puffed up with indignation over having to share air-space with the likes of me. To the point where idiot "conservatives" will bring their children into a PUB and grille which is non-smoking by mandate, ask to sit on the patio (where smokers have been relegated to), and then give me the stink-eye because they chose to sit down wind from me. Waving their hands in front of their precious little ones faces in some overly melodramatic way to indicate to me their disdain.
All these years, I've been saying it wouldn't stop with cigarettes, because it is a process, not unique to smoking, but of social control. BAHG, FU, you're a smoker, of course you say thaaaat!
Lets move this process along to guns now. First, demonize the product. Check. Now let's demonize the manufacturers. Check. Now lets dehumanize and "other" the owners of guns. Check.
Welcome to the party, pals!

Rifle = part ranching community, more recently services for the oil shale district
Parachute = Bedroom community, half retirees, half oil field workers
Debeque = Truck stop, not much else
Palisade = Fruit orchards, wineries (my dad used to raise apples out there)
Grand Junction= the junction of the Gunnison River and Grand River (aka the Colorado River). Natural crossroads for commerce on the E-W route from Denver to points west. Tourism, agriculture, agri-tourism (wine), not so much of a destination, more of a gateway.
Fruita = place I was born, mountain biking, dinosaur fossils

As I laid out in this piece, because ObamaCare allows me to game the system in this way, for the first time in over 25 years, I'm an uninsured-American. Going forward, my plan is to pay the annual penalty, which is ridiculously cheaper than insurance, and only purchase health insurance should I get sick.
As soon as the masses figure out this option under Obamacare - that there's even less of an incentive to purchase health insurance than there was before ObamaCare passed - that's how the system crashes."
Yes. And then we get Single Payer, which was probably the intent all along, because Leftists are never content to go only half Communist. They always have to go full Communist.
Later, all.

I read something interesting in C.S. Lewis's "Miracles". He discussed the situation when an author has written his characters into a horrible "muddle" and then rescues them by winning the lottery or some other "deus ex machina" thing. Lewis called it "bad art". We are naturally repulsed by such things. They are unnatural. While winning the lottery is not unnatural, it should not be thing that cures all ills.
I am hit by two examples of this "bad art" recently. First, I am re-reading "The Fellowship of the Ring". Who the fuck is Tom Bombadil? Is he God? Is he a god? Is he immortal? Holy fucking shit! He certainly showed up at an opportune moment.
Secondly, I have be watching "Downton Abbey". Did Matthew Crowley just save the estate from the incompetence of Lord Robert by inheriting a fortune from Reggie Swinson?
Bad art.

There's a helluva lot to be said for the past. The past is where a ragtag bunch of colonists, including an outright penal colony, threw off they yoke of their faraway lords and conquered a continent. The past is where a land far away from esteemed universities became the major source of discovery and invention for a planet. The past is where a nation who could barely keep its borders secure bailed out besieged nations all around the world for a period of years.
The trick is to know which parts of the past were responsible for the good things, and keep those -- not wholesale say, "I can do better" because you're some starry-eyed nincompoop with a ginormous ego and no sense of history (and big ears besides).

This functional alcoholic shit is just that, shit. People can drink and work. The drink Nazi's and the social workers want to classify anyone who drinks more that three drinks a day as an alcoholic.
That would mean most every fucking worker at US Steel is an alcoholic. Every fucking British naval officer, and the list goes on.
They people have a reason for these classifications, they get paid to "help".
Total fucking bull shit. I need a drink.
Posted by: Billy Bob, Pseudo Intellectual at January 27, 2013 10:55 PM (wR+pz)
That is not a "functioning alcoholic". Being an alcoholic has nothing to do with how many drinks you have, it is having to "have" those drinks. It's not about the guy who has a few beers after work, but the guy who has a few beers before work. You can't tell they have been drinking because that is the way they always look. Their job performance doesn't just drop way off one day, it starts a very gradual descent until one day you look at them as a pretty bad employee.

Is it wrong for me to be incredibly frustrated that we are not doing a better job separating the 2nd Amendment from crime?
The two have nothing to do with one another.
You can certainly deprive me of my rights, after due process. Period.
The second amendment is not about hunting, crime, sporting clays or any other stupid thing. That's why we as conservatives do a disservice when we keep connecting it to a criminal conversation. Nothing to do with Sandy Hook.
Its the concealed carry permit for the American people. It serves the same purpose of deterrence for the Federal Govt that the uncertainty in a community that has concealed carry has for a criminal.
This is more of a 4th amendment issue, is it not? can I be deprived or my rights without due process?
When you yell fire in a theater, that is protected under the first a. If it causes harm, e.g. no fire, and people get hurt, then you can be punished for that AFTER due process..
Am I wrong to keep trying to separate the two issues?
Oh, and sven, keep in mind that the chain of command has NO "sway" on forcing your wife to do something that is unconstitutional. If she is an officer, she takes an oath to the constitution, period. If an enlisted troop, she also has to obey the orders of those appointed above her, including the president, but the officers oath is purely to the Constitution.
I've taken both of them.
Comments?

Yeah, I am amazed that Portlandia does such a great job of skewering liberals! That show is funnier than shit, and I can't believe Lorne Michaels is the producer, when SNL stays far, far away from lib ridicule, with rare exceptions. Anyone who hasn't watched, because you think it will be liberal tripe, watch it. It is liberal tripe, but as the object of ridicule, for a change. Refreshing. But I can't figure out why libs like this show. I guess for the same reason cons like shows like Duck Dynasty? I am not saying they're the same. I am confused by the whole thing.

Well, she was fairly attractive but had horrific style. The first time I really found myself paying attention was the Material Girl video where she was doing a Marilyn Monroe impression and also had a more natural style in the other parts of the video where Keith Carradine wins her over with an old pickup truck rather than something ostentatious. She looked best when the purpose was to imitate some past beauty, like Bridget Bardot. Although I hated the Dick Tracy movie, she looked pretty good in 1930s costuming for that.
She could have been a less memorable Playmate but not Playmate of the Year.

I respectfully disagree. Drinking is a function of will power. Drinking can be addictive and some people are more prone to become addicted.
Classifying addictive drinking as a disease has fostered an entire industry of "helpers". The success rate of those "helpers" is ridiculous. Drunks go back to rehab repeatedly, because the rehab is a joke, but insurance will pay for it.
Labeling people "Alcoholics" is simply away to get insurance money for "treatment".
People make choices in life, drinking, smoking, sex addiction, drugs. Some make the wrong decision, that about it.
I am tired of the prohibitionist and I am out of wine. Good night Sir.

Being stuck here in Calibonya, at least for now,
I am at least in front row seats for the coming slow motion train wreak that started when the apparent "Intelligencias" of this great state (read illegals and their democratic handlers) stole a voting process that at one time was the hallmark of a nation that has had a bloodless exchange of power every four years since it's inception. That said and with the voting in of "Jerry BATH HOUSE Brown.....AGAIN???" I am convinced that this process is so corrupted that nothing short of this entire land mass being tipped into the pacific and swallowed whole will ever correct this abortion of the voting booth.
"Civility" is no longer an option. It is either we take back the democratic process by destroying "quickly" the commies and Socialists that have slowly degraded our system to suit their goals, or we suffer even greater fates.
We do not have decades to fix this...Action is a real time application.
Commit to an ACTION....deny them their victory and taking a page from their own play book...."By whatever means needed."

And they somehow manage to bend the laws of physics to do so, since the three lanes between them and the exit are packed.

The first time I saw a man wearing a pistol in a holster:
In 1984, I worked in Tempe AZ. Some friends turned me on to the "tubing down the Salt River" thing. So. I am floating down the Salt river in an inner tube and I see an Indian (feather, not dot) wearing a Cowboy outfit with holstered pistol on the land. Prior to this I was pretty much an urban creature. His expression was peaceful. Part of growing up. When will Obama grow up?

An alcoholic is functional until he isn't. Then it gets interesting, and by 'interesting', I mean increasingly nightmarish, dark and desolate, with options narrowed to zero. And no, no one can classify an alcoholic as an alcoholic with any certainty. Only the alcoholic himself can make that assessment with certainty.
When I tell people I'm a recovering drunk with (thankfully) many years of sobriety, many make the assumption that I'm a prohibitionist of some sort. Not true. Drink all you like, have fun, enjoy. I only know I can't safely touch the stuff. If you pass out, I promise not to steal your wallet.

Why thank you for putting your fucking knowledge on me. To think for all these years I was wrong until you pointed it out to me. I am cured!!!!!
Sorry to rain on your parade chief, but it isn't all about "willpower". I drink, and I sure as hell am not a prohibitionist. I pretty much doubt you have ever really been around a real alcoholic and had to deal with them. Have you ever had to deal with someone on a bender going into detox? No? It's not fun. There body has become use to the alcohol and needs it, at that point it isn't about will power, it's about survival. Without the alcohol, their body starts to shut down. If you haven't had a medical doctor tell you to make sure that you give the person some alcohol on the way to a treatment facility so they don't die in the car, then you don't know that there really is an addiction to alcohol.
Go to an AA meeting sometime, you will be shocked at how addictive alcohol is, just as addictive as heroin, or crack, or nicotine.

Yeah, anyone who had ever known an alcoholic, after the fall, wouldn't argue this point. It's not just a question of willpower, though that goes. It's not just a question of it affecting their work, though it obviously does. A full blown alcoholic can be stuck to a hospital bed because his internals are essentially kaput. Forget the kidneys for a second. I mean a person just past middle age who is having difficulty controlling their muscles and is mentally disappearing
2-3 years before, that person can seem perfectly fine. Alcohol takes it's toll gradually.
For the record, no I'm not a prohibitionist by a long shot. I drink socially and enjoy single malt scotch.
This is a genuine problem to watch out for, though, and anybody arguing otherwise needs to understand that before he gets in trouble.

And besides nicotine, much easier to get. And no, alcohol isn't just 'willpower.'. First and second time i was in the emergency room they said i was near death. And this wasn't binge drinking, it was withdrawal and detox that is the threat. Could have powered a small city with how much imwas shaking.
Posted by: RWC at January 28, 2013 12:09 AM (sqp6o)
Back in 09 we had to take a family member to treatment. They would not go to the hospital, even though the doctor wanted them to go. Hospital won't take them unless they go in voluntarily, or are passed out and dying. This person was shaking so bad that they couldn't get drink the alcohol that the doctor told us to keep giving to them. When you have to hold the bottle to someone's lips so that they can drink, you know there is an addiction.
Cheri, the best thing you can do is nothing. If you go behind them and clean everything up, they never have to face the consequences of their drinking. The second they do, they are more likely to hit bottom and try to get help.

I know my limits most days yet....I have had many a friend who has dove too deep into the bottle and drowned there....bad endings always.
Sometimes you just have to walk away. Your friend will hit the bottom and recover or....you can never save anyone from themselves. You cannot save them......ever.
Very sad but true. I wish I had something more uplifting to say....
Bless you for trying.....yet the toll on you will be far greater in the end.

Mrs. Guevara and I were (and to some extent, still are) thinking about fleeing to AZ (we've actually been out there house-hunting), but we're worried about the leftist infestation extending there next. If so, there's not much point in moving from a leftist-infested place with nice weather to a leftist-infested place with blazing summers.

No, they aren't ignoring it Al. What they've done is allowed what happened in Santa Monica in 1968 to become one of their focal points about how eeeeeeeeevil off-shore drilling is. Never mind that the stuff bubbles up naturally all along the Los Angeles coastline.

There was a "huge" oil well blowout in the Santa Barbara channel that was all over the news in 1969 -- same crap as the Deepwater Horizon, but in SoCal. Thing is, though, there is a city just south of SB called "Carpinteria" -- which got its name because, when the Spanish discovered it, the native Indians were building plank canoes and ***caulking the seams with tar naturally washed up on the beaches***.
I hate those lying bastards so much. "History begins when Progressives take over, and not one moment before."

Would that be the Chowchilla Express? That'll let people commute at high speed between Merced and Chowchilla, thereby removing a big bottleneck for lettuce pickers. And cheap at the price, a mere $100 billion. But what the hey, we've got lots of money anyway.

Yeah, and that's out in Buttfuck County. But acquiring the necessary right of way in LA and SF to complete the goddamned thing will no problem at all. Probably cheap, too.
I'm waiting for some eco-assholes to find that the route goes over the habitat of some endangered cockroach or something. By the time the litigation ends, the cockroach will have evolved into a Democrat Senator from CA.

My sister was shocked when we went around our mom's house looking for her hidden stashes of booze. It really sucks when that is the person you have to put the booze into what is essentially a "sippy cup" for them to drink.

Speaking of which, and more of an aside -- the LA Farmers' Market is actually fairly close to the aforementioned tar pits. I nearly busted a gut a couple of decades back when someone tossed a lit cigarette too close to a crack in the sidewalk there -- and touched off a natural gas explosion that damaged a wall.

NoVA here in Virginia. When West Virginia flipped from Dem to GOP, we started to change from GOP to Dem. In state elections, I am pretty confident that we will be GOP, but the DC teet gets suckled by NoVa pretty hard.
It is almost as if they want big Federal govt, then a small state government to offset the cost.

The libtards are now freaking out in Virginia because McDonnell has decided to scrap the gas tax and increase the sales tax. It is supposed to raise the same amount of money, but instead of having the gas tax bumped up to cover improved MPG, the sales tax will just be able to raise more money based on inflation.
The libs are going on about how it will hurt the poor blah blah blah, and we need money dedicated for the roads. Somebody forgot to tell them that they have been raiding that fund for decades to build all kinds of airports, seaports, choo choo trains, and bus terminals instead of using it to build and maintain roads.

Been by, but not stopped -- thing is, current Progressive dogma is that hydrocarbons are De Ebbil!!! and most likely discharged by that Satan, "Booooosh" (although some of his other demons, like Cheney or Henry Ford, might also be responsible). This makes the mental disconnect with "hydrocarbons are naturally occurring substances that have been around for millenia, can be burned or degraded by bacteria, and form yet another carbon pathway in our complex and robust ecosystem" that much more poignant.
Fumaroles are just naturally occurring smoking pits that emit smog worse than ten thousand automobiles or coal power plants. No mental gyrations at all, there.

I ask the hippie eco-swine why they hate petroleum, because it comes from mother earth packed with organic wholesomeness and junk, so what's not to love? Oh, right...it allows the masses to access freedom of movement and a bit of independence that they seek to curtail. Goddamned useful idiots.

It's one of the things that I'd recommend any visitor to LA to see, 'cause otherwise you just don't "get it".
Another favorite is the juxtaposition -- go in the morning to see the Assyrian reliefs at LACMA, go in the afternoon to the Citadel Outlet Stores in the old Uniroyal plant off the 5.

I used to commute from LAX to Los Feliz every day with one job I had 12 years ago. The 110 N is a crawl anytime during business hours from the 405 to the tunnels north of Downtown
I didn't want to do stoplight traffic through da hood, so I suffered the 110 to 6th ave, up a few blocks on Fig to cross over, went to 1st to Glendale. Once I got north of the 101 overpass it wasn't bad. This was mid afternoon though

Head out to Palmdale, and the SR-71 crystallized a dream into a real object -- a plane whose controlled flight was faster than a bullet. The U-2 was close to a satellite in the atmosphere.
Nothing was impossible, materials and processes were to be conquered or just worked around. That was California in her prime.
Way back then. When I was a kid.

There are quite a few Japanese gardens downstate. The one at the Huntington is outstanding ( http://www.huntington.org/huntingtonlibrary.aspx?id=512 ).
The one in Saratoga -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakone_Gardens -- at 18 acres is much larger than the one in Golden Gate Park -- http://japaneseteagardensf.com/about-us.php -- which is about 5 acres. It is also of much finer construction, being less of a public exhibition and more of an enthusiasts' creation.

Remember reading a while back that the reason there's a short tight jog in the 101 freeway near Union Station in downtown LA is because there used to be a huge brewery right there, the Brew 102 brewery. Supposedly named because the owners had tried 101 recipes before hitting the right one.
Holy Cow. Mom and Dad used to drink that. I think it was pretty inexpensive back in the day. Anyone remeber Appfells coffee? Dad was a coffee salesman for most of my childhood.
