Professor Jacobson of Legal Insurrection isn't giving up:
I have not given in to all the doom and gloom, although it's hard not to. There is a deliberate effort to declare the Republican Party, conservatives, and the Tea Party movement over. Operation Demoralize never stops.
And often the effects of demoralization are far worse than any particular defeat. You can recover from losses but not from an internal defeat of the spirit.
And Joe Engel follows up on this:
As tempting as it is sometimes to compare our inept and feckless Republican leaders to Marshal Pétain and his Vichy toadies, that only highlights how unwarranted the demoralization is.Because for all our despair and disappointment, life in America 2013 is hardly comparable to life in Casablanca 1942. Those who were caught in hegemonic limbo never knew whether today was the day they'd be rounded up as one of the "usual suspects" and pay the ultimate price as an enemy of the German state.
Yet even while the movie Casablanca was being shot through the summer of '42, the Allied invasion of North Africa was being plotted, culminating that November in Morocco's liberation.
So here, be inspired. And sing loud-louder than they do. We're all Victor Laszlo now.
I'm shocked, shocked that demoralization is taking place in this establishment.
"Do not blame Caesar, blame the people of Rome who have so enthusiastically acclaimed and adored him and rejoiced in their loss of freedom and danced in his path and gave him triumphal processions and laughed delightedly at his licentiousness and thought it very superior of him to acquire vast amounts of gold illicitly. Blame the people who hail him when he speaks in the Forum of the 'new, wonderful good society' which shall now be Rome's, interpreted to mean 'more money, more ease, more security, more living fatly at the expense of the industrious.' Julius was always an ambitious villain, but he is only one man."
Attributed to Marcus Tullius Cicero but probably from a novel about him.
Prager U: Adam Carolla on the Ability to Change
And Bookworm explains her own discovery of the ability to self-change:
Believe it or not, the most important book I've ever read is Dale Carnegie's How To Win Friends and Influence People.
I picked Carnegie's book off my high school library's shelf when I was fifteen - a very awkward, unattractive fifteen-year-old, who compensated for social inferiority with a cutting wit that, while sophisticated and often funny, saw people (especially boys) backing away from me as fast as possible. How to Win Friends and Influence People was the first intimation I had that, by changing myself, I could change how people respond to me. I didn't become nicer overnight, but I made the decision then and there that I was a work in progress and that I had a lifetime responsibility to improve myself.
Based on their interpretation of an 1884 law and has already collected $100 million in 'fees'. Except a judge has just issued an injunction based on the fact that they don't actually have legal authorization to do this. Oops.
Black Holes and the 774AD Gamma Ray Burst
It was my understanding that only mankind had the capability to harm Gaia. Cause we're a plague or something.
Here they list five decent choices but I'm sure the horde can come up with plenty others.
The Most Florida Crime Ever: Naked Carny Poops & Masturbates Amidst Gunfire
Well gunfire tends to break my fap concentration but then I'm no FL carny.
Fort Myers, Florida - Gregory Matthew Bruni, 21, [a carnival worker] is facing charges of damage to property, burglary, battery and resisting an officer. The victims told the Lee County Sheriff's Office they were inside around 6:50 p.m. when they heard noises on the roof.
They went outside and saw a naked man, later identified as Bruni, on the roof, according to a Lee County Sheriff's Office report. They said the man then jumped off the roof and onto one of the victims, knocking him down.
The man then ran into their home and pulled a 72-inch television off a living room wall, breaking it.
...The victim told investigators he yelled for his wife to get a gun as Bruni continued to thrash around the house, knocking over a wet/dry vacuum and spilling its contents on the floor. The wife fired three shots from a .38 caliber revolver at Bruni, but missed and hit a wall.
Bruni then fell to the ground and began masturbating in the living room before he ran into the victims' son's bedroom and began rubbing his face with clothing, according to the report.
On the other hand computing power wasn't the main limiting factor then either.
The Yahoo AoSHQ group. Bla bla bla.
And my twitter thang.

America is not Rome. We still have a lot of tools to save the country, but people have got to want to be saved, and have to put forth some effort to do it.
BHO isn't Caesar, but he has millions of loyal followers who believe in him and what he is doing. It isn't stopping one man, it is stopping the wrong-headedness of millions who enable him.

Poem Reagan quoted in his speech
The poem
"High Flight"
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward IÂ’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. HovÂ’ring there,
IÂ’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
IÂ’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

On this date the crew of the shuttle Challenger were killed just seventy seconds after launch. Rest in peace brave men and women.
I remember exactly what I was doing. I was standing in G-1 AG Central Processing as a Second Liuetenant reporting into Ft. Riley, KS.
I remember what I was doing when that happened. I was at my acute care psych rotation for nursing school at Chester County Hospital. I was with my patient in the lunchroom. They had all the tv's on so the patients (a lot of whom were admitted because they tried to kill themselves) could watch the shuttle launch. We were all absolutely flabbergasted as we watched the explosion. I always wondered if any of those already fragile people succumbed later to their demons because of this trauma.

If we are to pick nits, that would be Morocco's transfer. "Liberation" is a loaded term. Poll the average Moroccan today and ask if he prefers American policy today over Nazi policy in the early 1940s.

Yes. But not enough time so I'll just give you the outline:
1. Nothing lasts forever - even socialism/communism.
2. The fallacy of linear prediction. If you extrapolate today's state in a straight line beyond a few years, whatever you predict is almost certainly wrong.
3. National cultures don't change in the short or even long-term. Italians are still Italians, Germans are still Germans. Americans will still be American.
4. The American people aren't ideological - they're fickle, low information but ultimately pragmatic.
5. You may be able to predict certain events in the future but nobody can predict the future. Anyone who claims they can is bullshitting themselves and you.

runningrn, did you go shopping at the gun buyback this weekend? I guess a bunch of people used it as a chance to sell weapons to others, including a missile launcher! Of course the authorities are investigating that sale. I think it is hilarious, they did manage to get 700 guns turned in, but I wonder how many more changed hands on the periphery
No we didn't go, we did a 10 mile race in Tacoma. It was the first time ever I had a collision with another runner. Out and back course, and one of the top ten guys took the corner to sharp and ran right into me (I was staying on my side as far right as possible as we were instructed at the start of the race). I almost think I got a mild concussion, my head hit him in the chest, I saw stars and I felt like throwing up. Luckily, somehow, I didn't fall on the ground, and I manged to finish the race. He was in the top 10 men, and he barely slowed down when he asked me if I was ok. The two guys behind me passed me when I stopped. They ended up beating me, but they waited at the finish line to make sure I was ok. I never saw the guy who ran into me again. I've been laying low the last couple of days. Have a headache and a sore neck and shoulders. Luckily, I already had a massage scheduled for tomorrow!

The problem is "the American identity" has thus far relied on a modified Anglic legal code and the integration and synthesis of disparate cultures...there is no "American" there is a hybrid....
the loyal to an ideology other than American ideal US left just decided to add 1/7th or so the US population in illegal immigrants who are not at all interested in integration and synthesis.
This is unprecedented, because to even imply they need to learn our language and adapt is "racist."

The closest thing to a FSA in Canada are some of the First Nations communities. Some of the Chiefs are like Democrat mayors, only worse and more corrupt, running their reserves like African dictatorships (with a similar level of corruption) while the aid continues to flow in. I give the do-gooders credit for brilliantly putting them in those ghettoes/Bantustans, out of sight. (It's hypocritical, considering Canada was mostly settled by people who left home to try to improve their lives.)

I had to deal with some Inuits about 10 years ago, and holy shit they bitched about everything. My company sent a framed gift to one family, and the UPS store screwed it up and they had to pay about $20 in taxes. We had no idea about the taxes since it cost us about $120 to ship it, so we thought it was okay., but this family bitched like they had been screwed out of their entire life savings because UPS screwed up, but somehow that was our fault.
Since that day, I knew they were in the frontline of the F$A.

A Rome, NY farmer was working in his fields one day, and came upon a berry that eclipsed the silhouette of a SCOAMF. He took it home, polished it up, and set it for display in a case. Word of the giant berry traveled far and wide, and people swarmed to see the exhibit. He charged admission and became a two percenter.
One evening at closing time, the IRS came to his farm. Not realizing who they were, he greeted them warmly and said, "Have you have come this way to admire my exhibit as well?"
"No," they chided. "We've come to seize your berry, not to praise it."

I was checking out of the barracks at NAS Memphis, on my way to NAS Oceana to begin Tomcat avionics training. I was turning in my linens and watching the launch, and when I hollered the girl doing the paperwork turned around just in time to see it all come apart. Several years later we studied the whole thing for my Aircraft Mishap Investigation class.
BTW, for those who saw Correia's video, the scrunt he was trying to remember who said the barrel shroud was the "shoulder thing that goes up" was Carolyn McCarthy (not former Congresscritter from GA, Cynthia McKinney). No surprise to me that she didn't know an AR-15 was, in fact, a rifle...that has a "shoulder thing that goes up"...
And "Casablanca" is in fact the best Bogie movie ever made (followed closely by "Key Largo"), and if you don't agree you are worse than Hitler.

Certainly, America has faced other dark days in her history. The difference now is that the leadership on our side is so abysmal that it's hard to feel hopeful. Pols we once had high hopes for - Palin, Christie, Rubio - have either been trashed and sullied by The Enemy or turned out to be sell-outs. Consider the parade of idiots that have either been elected or were candidates since Reagan left office. A country of 300 million - and they're the best we can do? And what is even worse - millions of our fellow Americans are OK with such mediocrities ruling them.
The characters in "Casablanca" were fighting against a tyrannical power they had not chosen. We - not us, but our dimwitted and venial and lazy fellow citizens - CHOSE the thieves, pervs, and turds who now want to run our lives. Hard not to feel demoralized.

I don't begrudge others trying to find a silver lining behind 11/6 but count me out.
Events subsequent to 11/6, especially from our GOP stalwarts in DC, haven't done a single thing to put a drop in the glass.
On the brighter side, I want to hang around just to see how bad it gets. Call it morbid curiosity.

• Rising Sun - Taiko Drum Opening: Seiichi Tanaka and the SF Taiko Dojo

• Batman (1989) - Theme: Danny Elfman
Listened to this non-stop for years. Set the standard for superhero movies (and pretty much every other Elfman soundtrack.)

Yes, Al, I know how you feel. I went through an agnostic phase - and found the idea that Anne Frank and her murderers are exactly in the same place - dead, with no justice in this or any any world - to be an unbearable thought. Being a Christian is hard and I'm not very good at it. Being an atheist is harder - that is, if you think through the implications.

Borders Group Inc. has gone into the book banning business. Actually, the company is only banning a single issue of a rarely read magazine, Free Inquiry. (Never heard of it? Neither had I until this past week.)
Borders will not stock the upcoming issue of this magazine, which some of its stores regularly carry, because it contains four cartoons. ThatÂ’s right, cartoons. The four cartoons depict the prophet Mohammed, and the religion Islam forbids all such depictions.
Wait a second, you say. If Islam forbids depiction of the prophet, then surely the practitioners of that religion can honor the prohibition by refraining from buying the magazine in question. Why does that necessitate keeping the cartoons out of the hands of others? Roman Catholics never insisted that Protestants eat fish on Fridays. None of my Jewish friends have ever begrudged me my BLT. No matter. Islamic law apparently applies to all of us, whether we believe in the religion or not. In fact, these four cartoons and eight others commissioned by Denmark's Jyllands-Posten newspaper were used to spark a wave of deadly protests by Muslims in a number of countries, with violent behavior aimed at non-Muslims.
Having seen the 12 cartoons, I can see how a follower of Mohammed would consider them blasphemous. On the other hand, I’ve seen plenty of South Park episodes that were more offensive to organized religion than all 12 of these cartoons combined. Word in the blogosphere is that the Danish Imams “juiced up” the Danish cartoons with a few of their own to rally their followers to riot level.
A spokesperson for Borders made it quite clear (at least as clear as corporate spokespeople ever make anything) that the magazines were not being stocked in an effort to ward off violent attacks by angry Muslims. “For us, the safety and security of our customers and employees is a top priority, and we believe that carrying this issue could challenge that priority,” is the money quote from Borders spokeswoman Beth Bingham.
There are over 475 Borders stores and 650 Waldenbooks stores in the United States. The citizens of this nation should launch a loud, long, and effective boycott of each and every one of them. But not for the reasons you might think.
1. America will die if we do not take a stand against intimidation. The bully that is Fascislam will grow stronger on appeasement. As a nation, we must stand up for ourselves and refuse to live in fear. The only way to do this effectively is to stare down the intimidators and be ready and willing to take the consequences.
2. Government can only do so much. The citizenry must lead on a moral basis. Remember the scene in Casablanca when the French expatriates in Rick’s Café could have gone either way – allow the Nazis to drown out their culture or sing Le Marseillase at the top of their lungs? Do you recall watching the movie and knowing that the free French would win the day, not because somebody had spoiled the ending by telling you how World War II came out but because you could see their courage in the face of possible imprisonment, torture and death? Those patrons of Rick’s could have easily become cheese-eating, surrender monkey Vichy French (as their sons and daughters have proven), but instead they prevailed over their oppressors. We Americans are at a similar fork in the road. Will it be mandatory burkhas for the ladies and prayer rugs for the men or will we stand up and sing the Star Spangled Banner at the top of our Velveeta-eating lungs?
3. Borders Group Inc. is a New York Stock Exchange-listed company. The corporation, its employees, its executives and its shareholders have all reaped benefits from the American legal system and the moral underpinnings that keep that system working. They may have the legal right (hell, IÂ’ll even concede them the moral right) to leave that dopey magazine off their shelves and issue a statement that signals to Muslims around the globe that Borders is deathly afraid of them and will back down in the face of intimidation. ThatÂ’s what the musicians in Rick's Cafe did when the German soldiers began singing their volksongs. But the American people, like the free French, have legal and moral rights of our own. We have the right to stand up and start singing Le Marseillase if we choose. The question is whether we will choose to do so.
Rumor has it that Borders Group is up for sale. If the company sells for a premium price after what it has just done, then America will have lost a golden opportunity to send a strong message to the fascists of our time. If, on the other hand, Borders is dealt a serious economic blow by a full-bore, placard-waving, bumper sticker-sticking, button wearing boycott, then the prospective buyers of Borders Group may come to the public hat in hand, promising to change the companyÂ’s tune once they purchase it. If we can make that happen, we will have shown ourselves and the rest of the world something important about Americans. Like Rick Blaine in Casablanca, we will have advised the Nazis that there are some parts of America that they would be ill-advised to try to invade.

After the second season it became Moore's idiocy over plot and coherent storylines. Had to shove in his liberal agenda over everything else. Even the finale suffered from it horribly. I remember participating in a live blog of it, and thinking it was very good. And then the last 20 minutes of it happened with a the taking of mulitple big old liberal shits all over the place in completely nonsensical ways.

Note the date on the payout slip Rick OKs in the opening scene (December 2). If I calculate the days right, the final scene at the airport (where he saves Lazlo, shoots Strasser and lights out for Brazzaville with Louis) is December 6. It's early Saturday morning in Honolulu. Not snark I am really dying to hear your view.
I followed it hard the first 3 seasons own every piece of Moore's agitprop and he asmuch as admits he was 'using current events to make a point."
What the point was beyond "the bad guys are really the good guys or we are the badguys but the goodguys are not so good and let's just chuck technology and uh....stop the er cycle by restarting ah fuck it on to the next project!'
Really the above little mini rant aside which is mostly a "I love you" to the ending....

I wish Battlestar Galactica 1980 had been better. The Colonial Motorcycles left something to be desired. But still they had a dilemma, Earth was primitive and Cylons were still chasing them. So they had to lead the Cylons away from Earth while trying to figure some way to get Earth ready.

I used to live in DC and can attest to that. Not just the pols themselves, but their staffers - crap, everyone there, because everyone there(including yours truly, once upon a time) works for businesses which depend on the government, even if they're not government workers themselves. The important thing becomes getting invited to the "right parties," getting your name (or your bosses' name) into the WaPo, getting the kids into the "right schools" (ie not DC public schools). And if you're in "private" industry there, business grows if the government does - so those pesky tea party types out there beyond the beltway are a real threat to you - no matter what party you're in. I started to move right while I was still there, but I had to live away from DC for awhile before I realized what constantly breathing in the air of Big Government does to you. And I was making an effort to resist it - of course, most people there don't.

Yeah essentially England's "sin" was teaching people about the benefits of capitalism without the requirements....and that is not whitewashing the excesses of imperialism. I think if the locals care about prosperity at all they care about counting coup more. I simply do not see a happy ending, until they get enough blood out and the next set of imperialists do a better job schooling them.
The Chinese and Russians seem to be interested in stepping up.
Gonna be hard to have a good economy letting China corner Africa's assets and have an Asian hegemon but "hey" SMARTPOWER! baby....
that means our economic gain will have to be in energy resources we refuse to use because of leftist religion or cheap labor they won't allow until they've destroyed our liberty and culture.....

The networks think that anything that has to do with space/sci fi needs to have some cute little kid/critter/robot in it to appeal to the kiddehs. Once they shove it into the show, the adults stop watching it, and the kids see right through it, the ratings tank, show gets cancelled.

Oh and Ultraman was pretty awesome too. My first tv show I ever watched that was dubbed (it took me a while to figure out why the characters' mouths were moving when they weren't speaking and vice versa). Ultraman got to fight monsters plus there was Fuji, the female, Japanese character that looked like me! (Well, was Japanese, and let's face it, in the 70's there weren't a lot of Asians on tv!)

Hey Jordan I know which characters are "real" and fake because I read the historical analysis of the period.
How's about you lay some neo-Marxist Maoist bullshit on me about how Cao Cao was a proto-socialist, or a cpitalist pig dog....then a true nationalist depending on which version of "history" the party is int he mood for?

UPS is about the worst possible shipper to use for cross-border shipments into Canada. I will attempt to explain. Most goods from the USA can enter Canada duty-free now, but practically everything is subject to GST (goods and services tax), now 5%, would have been 7% at that time. Send something by mail, and the post office at the receiving end collects the GST, and a flat fee of about five dollars for doing the paperwork. UPS also collects the GST, but charges a "brokerage" fee based on a percentage of the value of the item. That's a damned ripoff, since it doesn't take any more effort to calculate 5% of 200 dollars than it does to calculate 5% of 20 dollars. And UPS has real problems finding a rural address, like me. When I order goods out of the USA, I specify U.S. Postal service. If the shipper refuses to do that, I will take my business elsewhere, or else have the goods shipped to a friend in a border state, and make a visit to fetch them later.
Your Inuit folks rightly had a beef with UPS, and wrongly took out their frustrations on you. Of course, they might not have understood that the shipper was merely hired help. The first time I got screwed over by UPS, I was some pissed off, but I realized that the sender couldn't have possibly known about the issues with them here in Canada.

Back then we shipped a lot of stuff back and forth over the border, and what we shipped was a gift, not goods, so there should not have been any tax. We had no idea that they had even been charged anything until a local tv station did a story that made it look like we shipped the gift to them COD and postage due. Looked just like a VW engine, but cost 3 times as much to fix when it broke, which it did with appalling regularity. If I found one of the old split-windshield Transporters for a reasonable price, I'd snag it in a heartbeat, but I wouldn't have one of the newer ones if you gave it to me.

But the GOPers in DC don't. They want to give them piggyback rides across the creek, and act shocked, shocked I tell you, that those scorpions have stung them once again.
But why would they do that? We were helping them out.
Then they make fun of the GOP for being so trusting.
Everything the Dems does has one of two goals -- to increase their voter base or make Repubs look bad. So look at their latest action and figure out which of the goals it serves.

@726 That Casablanca thing sounds like an internet rumor. Got a reference?
--------------------------------------
I don't know about the majority of the cast. I do know that the actor who plays Major Strausser (the head Nazi officer) had fled the Third Reich.

That one was directly shoplifted off a Space:1999 episode in the 70s. 'SF Jesus' was one of the obligatory episode themes for a long time and turned up in lots of places but the similarity to that particular script makes it pretty blatant.

Katla, come soon. Drop the world over the edge. All is lost, so cause suffering for all.
This ends my cheerful message for this evening. :-)

Ed Morissey is doing a GREAT impersonation of a Whig.

Nothing like a dose of bad Latin to get me going in the morning.
I disdain you, sir. Consider yourself forgotten.

No reference - but I've read more than once that Hollywood was full of Germans, both gentiles and Jews, who had fled Nazi Germany - and many of them ended up playing Nazis in the movies.
One reason Hollywood was still pro-American in those days.

Oh, yes! I was only in grade school then - but McCallum to me was the male counterpart of Mrs. Peel. Too cool for words.
