Please take it easy with your back (like you were going to play three sets of tennis -sure).
A former co-worker had a ruptured disk and then two additional ones.
First they put in a synthetic disk. Then with the other ones they did spinal fusion surgery.
My neighbor also had spinal fusion surgery for her ruptured disks. I think she is about the same age as you are. Very painful for you now, I am sure.

From the KU link:
Speaking previously about her most famous assets, she said: 'I don't really know what the appeal is about boobs. But I do know that when I was in junior high, I used to be made fun of - for being flat-chested.
'Everyone would go, "She's not pretty! She doesn't have boobs!" So I always had boob envy. And when finally I went through my growth spurt, and they appeared, and I just loved them. So that's why I like boobs, because I didn't have them, and then I got them!
Can I borrow them for a little while? I promise I'll give them right back. I'll even explain what the appeal is all about while I'm, um, using them.
Pretty please?

Jewells, I was lucky that I had only a single herniated disk about 7 years ago. Back pain is excruciating - no one can know unless they've had it. Sometimes I would sit up in a chair late at night because I could not sleep, and drink a beer with a valium and that would let me doze.
I had terrible pain in my left leg, and I had to walk all hunched over. I got epidural injections of cortisone, which helped when it got really bad. But there were only so many times they would do that. Eventually it healed on its own - I was lucky.

Former Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who led the war in Afghanistan, endorsed strong gun control laws Tuesday on Morning Joe.
“I spent a career carrying typically either an M16 or an M4 Carbine. An M4 Carbine fires a .223 caliber round which is 5.56 mm at about 3000 feet per second. When it hits a human body, the effects are devastating. It’s designed for that,” McChrystal explained. “That’s what our soldiers ought to carry. I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America.”

Wow, I had no idea that a herniated disk would do that. And I am filing it away in my brain because my experience with surgery is that, well, not to put too fine a point on it, it doesn't always "work," and sometimes you end up in worse shape. Srsly, that is epically good news.

We're settling in for some hard frosts, so I stapled plastic sheets to the eaves to protect the citrus -- which involved moving through some tight spaces, getting on off-balance ladders, and working near windows without falling through them. And running out of staples midway, so that I got to back out through all of it and re-insert myself again, just to stay in practice.

A few things to note this evening. I've decided to list the Bill of Rights on Facebook, one amendment each evening, putting them out there for education and discussion. I listed the first with a total of one comment and a few likes. I suppose being enlighted is not overly important to folks nowdays. I hope to spark in the 20 and 30 somethings. I hope it doesn't sit there floating like a turd in a punchbowl.
Second thing is my wife and I watched last night's Justified this evening. I had to laugh that Ollie, the $2400 a year constable, drove the same model and color babe mobile I drove when I met my wife to be, a bittersweet (golden colored) Gremlin. I busted a gut on that one. The first episode rocked and left me wanting more.

The herniated disk rubs on the spinal chord, and the irritation causes pain somewhere else in the body. Like Jewells, I had a herniated disk in the L5 lumbar, and the pain from the irritation was in my left leg. Even today, my left foot is partially numb from the irritated nerves in my back.
A herniated disk is no joke - the vertebrae bones are rubbing on each other after the disks rupture. The pain is excruciating at times. That's what got Rush Limbaugh in trouble with oxycodone addiction - back pain. It can be unbearably painful.
Pray for Jewells.

have all these guys forgotten what they were protecting?
Their oaths mean nothing. They value nothing greater than their own power.
And prayers to y'all ailing Morons. I had sciatica about a year ago and it was very painful, couldn't sleep and couldn't find a comfortable position. Sat on a bag of ice for about two weeks straight.
I finally rolled around on a golf ball on the floor where my spine hurt the most. That helped a lot. Accupressure, recommended by a guitar player bud of mine.

Er, no. No help, and not especially dangerous -- I merely got scratched by citrus thorns, jabbed in the back by a hibiscus branch, torqued my leg trying to get down from a plant stand on blocks.....but nothing serious.
This is the first year I've done it this way, because we consolidated the potted citrus in an area nicknamed "the mesa" by the window to the BH's sewing room. Before, we'd try covering them individually wherever they were. It's a southward-facing wall, and now -- with the plastic -- it's quite toasty. I think they'll like it.

I was trying to think of something else snarky to say, but since I can't think of anything else libertarians are getting out of this, I can't really come up with anything to add.
Obama might easy go easier on pot smokers, though he didn't in his first term, and will maintain a pro-choice administration (though I'd argue that shouldn't count as a libertarian issue).
In exchange, we get gun control, Obamacare, tax increases, and his failure to see that spending is even a problem.
And over half of libertarians voted for this guy. Fantastic.

If he's in the primaries, he'll immediately unify the squishes and LIVs (he's the most famous Republican now), rack up wins against a fractured conservative field, and keep you icky racist cracker-baggers from having anybody to vote for. That's how Romney won.

the "M-16/M-4" he was on about.....
The M-16 was born as the AR-10 Eugene Stoner's competitor against the T-33 to become the m-1 garand's replacement......
Stoner cranked the design back from .308 to 5.56/.223 and wound up selling it to Ranchers and gun enthusiasts.
The original AR-10 design was used by some foreign military contracts but the USAF adopted the AR-15 for its security police after Curtis leMay got a demonstration from Stoner.
The Military build up in Vietnam saw the design shift to Army hands as well. the marines adopted it nearer the mid phase of the war.
Colt made the rifle under license as Armalite
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ArmaLite
The notion that the "M-4 is a weapon of doom" is rich....
it is the fucking ammo they are pissy about and it is just as deadly coming out of a bolt gun as a fucking semi-auto.
What Pissy mc Crys wants is us stuck with .22 LR ammo.

Posted by: ette- at January 09, 2013 07:13 PM (nqBYe)
Yeah McNamara, that fuckin' Whiz Kid.
He didn't want to chrome the recievers on the original M-16's used in Viet Nam, even though the institutional people in the Army knew from WWII that a rifle without a chromed reciever would corrode in a jungle environment.
Those early M-16's would get corrosion overnight in the jungles in Viet Nam.
And the early ammunition used in Viet Nam had a different powder than Gene Stoner's design, which made the mechanism more dirty after firing, leading it to jam faster. I think Stoner's designs used a "stick" powder, which burned cleaner, rather than the cheaper "ball" powder which made the action in the M-16 dirty fast. All the rifle experts in the Army knew better, but McNamara over-ruled them, until there were a lot of "problems" in the field, i.e., guns jamming and men getting killed.
That guy - what a freakin' bastard. McNamara.

Well Stoner's design with ammo built to his specs was by army standards 'damn near perfectly clean" in a NATO environ not 'nam....
and the AR-15 is more lethal in ways that matter than the M-14 pound for pound.
1) more soldiers are WAY more accurate with the AR than the M-14 hour for hour of training
2) from a military standpoint a wounded opfor is more useful than a dead opfor minute by minute.
You wound one fucker it takes one or two to carry 'em.
A soldier who is HOOAH TROOP will be more lethal wwith the 7.62*51 but Avergae joe handles the 5.56 MUCH better.....
and I went in believing the opposite.

"But though the scheme of disciplining the whole nation must be abandoned as mischievous or impracticable; yet it is a matter of the utmost importance that a well-digested plan should, as soon as possible, be adopted for the proper establishment of the militia. The attention of the government ought particularly to be directed to the formation of a select corps of moderate extent, upon such principles as will really fit them for service in case of need. By thus circumscribing the plan, it will be possible to have an excellent body of well-trained militia, ready to take the field whenever the defense of the State shall require it. This will not only lessen the call for military establishments, but if circumstances should at any time oblige the government to form an army of any magnitude that army can never be formidable to the liberties of the people while there is a large body of citizens, little, if at all, inferior to them in discipline and the use of arms, who stand ready to defend their own rights and those of their fellow-citizens. This appears to me the only substitute that can be devised for a standing army, and the best possible security against it, if it should exist."

Posted by: chemjeff at January 09, 2013 11:08 PM (BBWjt)
Blood orange, lime, and a dwarf lemon. They're all really small -- like about 3 feet -- in containers of about 25 gallons.
Most of our plants are actually in containers rather than in the ground, and so a lot of our garden infrastructure is "staircases" so we can display 'em all ranked up. And then you get to try and pair things so that you have "droopers" and "standers" in the same pot -- we have trailing lantana and bird-of-paradise in one pot out front, for instance, that's worked particularly well. When we initially got some of the citrus, I thought it would be cute to have the lemon tree growing with a groundcover of lemon thyme, and the lime growing with a groundcover of lime thyme -- but it turns out that this is a bad idea because the thyme outcompetes the surface feeding roots of the citrus.
The last time the BH and I visited London, we stopped off at Kew Gardens. They have a cafeteria in a building that was originally an "Orangery" -- a heated building where they could grow oranges in England. Having grown up in California, where you can generally grow citrus outside, it's disturbing to think of places where you have to do that.

So a buddy of mine went with me to a fun show back in late Nov last year and we both picked up some precious metals. Later on, I bought a thousand rounds and urged him to do the same. After hearing that he only got 200, I highly encouraged him to get more (this was right before Sandy Hook happened). So, this past Monday I asked him if he got any extra mags too. He told me that he wasn't going to buy anything else because this wife had intercepted his ammo package and hid it from him. LOLOLOL!!!! He said he spent this past weekend looking everywhere for it and he still had no idea where she hid it. He didn't want to risk any more shipments being "hijacked". I told him to go ahead and order the mags while they were still available but have them shipped to my house instead so his wife couldn't fuck with it.
Today was the day for delivery. I come home and the first thing my wife asks me is "Why are we getting Bill's mail at our house?" I started to tell her the whole backstory and she said she had a suspicion about what was in the package and was tempted to hide it from me herself! LOL!!!!
WOMEN!!! WTF is wrong with them?!?!!?!?!
So now, it isn't safe at my house either for him or me! I gotta worry about TFG and his goonsquad coming to my door, I can't spare any more paranoia on my own wife! Holy shit, what is going on in this world?!?!

I'm going to have to take exception to that about Rummy -- "The Once and Future SecDef", and the only man to have been both the oldest and youngest SecDef when he held the post. I think he got stuck with the old "you didn't give me the solution I needed; you gave me what I asked for" rap -- and that he was technically competent to the point where he could make the convoluted and difficult guidelines he was given look plausibly doable. Some reasonable people, maybe more than anybody ever realizes, have a heater in their pocket while drinking at the bar, for example, and nobody ever knows it. And have for a hundred years of laws promising felony punishments for doing so.
Stupid is as stupid does and a parade of brandished firearms in the middle of a city is an asinine example of political counter-productivity.
Argue the points of the law. Brandishing firearms only scares people and provides excellent photographic propaganda for the other side to demonize your dumbass as a loose cannon.

2. this is all part of the LIB folks. Did anyone think you could just sit back and not be affected until the rest of the country woke up? if you care about certain things/ideals then anything this regime will do in the next 4 years will outrage you and be very dangerous to you personally. even those in so called red states.
3. each step that is taken towards tyranny is logical and foreseeable. Only the timing is in question due to events.
4. the states are the last bastion. Those that fall or have already fallen will provide the human resource to begin the return.
5. strong desire or cold logic isn't enough to overthrow any regime. It takes passion. Passion derived from fear for self, fear for family, fear for others. until they have created that fear, not enough will be passionate enough to overthrow the regime.
They know this and their plans will take it into consideration.
The only thing that can save us sooner would be an "event" of some type. could be anything.

Oblivion - Tom Cruise and the dude that directed Tron: Legacy. Looks okay but I can never remember a single detail and still don't know what the movie is about. Meh.
The earth is trashed by aliens and Cruise is some sort of janitor trying to clean up the planet. He thinks he's the only one left after everyone left for greener pastures. Wrong.
Some people have already speculated that Cruise's character was brainwashed and is really working for the aliens, trying to find the last remnants of humans still hiding on the planet. Things get even more tense when a spaceship crash lands, filled with humans who left many years ago.

not just guns but our opinions and actions in other things.
this is aided and abetted by the State Media.
they refuse to cover rallies that would show the rest of the country how strong our opinion is (which is why they don't show them).
They don't cover or distort what we have to say (which they don't/won't understand).
And they deride daily who we are and what we think and even if we should be allowed to exist. (they'd like to see our elimination or surrender).
If the country blows up, a primary cause is the State Media's war on conservatives.

In comment #95 chemjeff suggests 'civil disobedience', further saying 'what are they going to do, arrest one million people?' Also on this thread, someone suggested carrying empty magazines to DC.
Now, you can (and did) argue that no one advocated breaking the law, but there have been cries right here on this blog to prosecute Gregory for waving around an empty 30 round mag in DC. Is it or is it not illegal in DC to possess a magazine capable of holding more than 10 rounds? I'm not saying saying that chemjeff strictly advocated carrying guns to DC, because he didn't. But you could infer that. Now maybe that poster was saying bring legal magazines, but again, there is that pesky inference thing going on.
So I took a position saying that going to DC and breaking the law would be a bad bad idea. That is still my position. Any useful suggestion at this point needs to be fully within the law.
For now. No one knows what the future holds.

Posted by: Robert at January 10, 2013 12:29 AM (LUnTP)
Some more detail from Merovign.
A lot of speculating and guessing have been going on on the internet about it. They're saying that Cruise's character has been duped/brainwashed by the aliens into thinking he's just there to fix shit and clean up earth in his little home in the sky. He thinks that he's the only person on earth as everyone else is either dead or offworld somewhere else. He doesn't know that Morgan Freeman and his band of underground humans have been there the whole time, hiding from Cruise and his drones.
Then, a spaceship crashes with humans on it, but the markings on the ship look like they're from our near future. They have different flags for some of the passengers on their "pods" and it looks like the spaceship may have been traveling "relativistically", i.e. traveling close to light speed away from earth, time slowing down for them, but years passing by on earth.
Cruise's boss betrays him by trying to kill the passengers and him and the game is on.

"All You Need Is Kill".
Again, the earth is invaded by especially lethal aliens and Cruise is drafted as a soldier to fight them. His first contact with them lasts only seconds and he is killed. Then somehow, he wakes up again and is again fighting the aliens, lasting only seconds before he is killed. He wakes up yet again, and the cycle keeps repeating, each time he lasts a little longer against the aliens, learning how they fight, adapting his tactics, to last longer against them, until he's holding his own and defeats the alien that has killed him a thousand times before.
Emily Blunt is also in it as a ninja-skilled soldier chick. Cruise somehow gets involved with her.

My $130 SKS has never jammed.
The commie guns are the canned food of a revolution. You don't buy them to be pretty or to hunt with you buy them as a tool against the govt. They were cheap and their rounds were cheap in comparison to other military style guns.
All that is too late likely for anyone that wasn't a paranoid bastard in the past but I have a squads worth to play with and their feed.

Whatever it is, Thomas Friedman will praise it lavishly and lament that we could build one too if we'd only give up our silly freedoms that get in the way of his personal pleasure.

Don't be afraid of mini 14s . The newer ones are more accurate. You can shoot them until the barrel melts off. There are some easy ways to get the older ones more accurate. ( a little device called accu strut ).
In California they are not classified as evil black rifles.

I have a piston myself. Noveske does not prefer the piston at all for the AR-15 platform for some reason. He says pistons are fine, and if you want a weapon with piston then go get an AK, SKS, or M14.

It may be true but how the hell does a piston affect accuracy?
I does affect jamming I believe though.

I've got the book on my Kindle. It is very much Groundhog Day crossed with Starship Troopers. The book, not the movie.
I have no doubt they're going to fuck it up. In the book the protagonist is a young Japanese man drafted to fight in powered armor against the aliens and get caught in a time loop mechanism the aliens use to warn themselves against new human tactics. The female lead is an American soldier who is a legendarily effective against the aliens because she has been living in the time loop for a long while already.
The stills I've seen of the movie production are not promising. Cruise is obviously not Japanese and is easily twice the age of the book's hero. A Lt. Col. where the book revolves around a buck private grunt. Cruise is shown in armor that only partially covers his limbs and torso, more like the experimental HULC exoskeleton. This is one of the great failings of Hollywood, refusing to cover up the face of an expensive star.
Good book, little hope for the movie.

Does it make any sense to try the .223 cal or is it better just to stick with the 7.62?

Unless you plan on having to hump the rounds in battle go with the round that costs less.

Noveske explains it.
I am told that Noveske guns tend to run smoother, a little quieter, and with a little less wear, by people who handle lots of guns (I don't have one). I think they tune the gas system rather than just slap components together.
He's talking about piston vs DI running with suppressors which I will never be able to get through the legal channels.
Posted by: EC at January 09, 2013 09:52 PM (doBIb)
On mine, there's a "regular" and "suppressed" setting. It's either or.

prolly not all the studios/producers fault.
Actors are actors because they want to be seen. They're exhibitionists.
Plus they want the face time/audience recognition of who is doing the acting. For star power negotiation with the producers.
I always enjoy watching them when they're in spacesuits. Most Hollywood spacesuits are LIT FROM INSIDE the helmet. That's so the audience can see their face and expressions but it's stupid. In the REAL the glare would be obstructive and it wouldn't be of any use as any readouts inside would be self lit.
Dumb dumb dumb. Seeing one of those always ruins my suspension of disbelief.
