The Modern Totalitarian Religion

Again, it is my argument that American liberalism is a totalitarian political religion, but not necessarily an Orwellian one. It is nice, not brutal. Nannying, not bullying. But it is definitely totalitarian-or 'holistic,' if you prefer-in that liberalism today sees no realm of human life that is beyond political significance, from what you eat to what you smoke to what you say. Sex is political. Food is political. Sports, entertainment, your inner motives and outer appearance, all have political salience for liberal fascists.

Even pasta is political.

Two Miserable Decades

So are we better or worse off these days than we were in the dismal 1970's? Well Jonathon Last says yes!

So which period was worse? There's a strong case to be made for each. Superficially, you could argue the '70s, for all the obvious reasons: 58,000 Americans dead in Vietnam, Watergate, gas lines, the last helicopter leaving Saigon. But the deeper undercurrents suggest a different answer.

After all, American culture was fraying in the '70s, but for the most part, society agreed that it was fraying and that this dissolution was problematic. In the 1970s, the country retained habits learned during almost two generations of the strongest growth in American history. A 40-year-old in 1970 had lived through the Depression and the Second World War, and his parents had seen the Great War, too. These people were made of stern stuff. And they could plausibly look at the world around them and see it as a terrible aberration. They could believe that the normal state of affairs was much better and that a return to normalcy was possible. That's why the country responded to Reagan's call for "morning in America."

Our age is different. A 40-year-old in 2000 was a teenager during the maelstrom of the '70s. He saw the bright spot of the mid-1980s and the respite from history that was the 1990s. But to him, the economic and social patterns of the '00s look like the norm.

As for the culture, the social order of the 1950s may have been washing out to sea during the 1970s, but today it might as well be Atlantis-a world so lost that people no longer believe it ever really existed.

Yay! The Northwest Passage is Finally Open

Global warming has opened up an Arctic route mariners have been craving for centuries, making the journey from Canada to Europe shorter.

A large sea freighter has become the first cargo vessel to successfully navigate the hazardous Arctic Northwest Passage carrying - somewhat ironically - coal.

If other ships decide to use the crossing through the Arctic Ocean, along the northern coast of North America connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, their route would be 1,000 nautical miles shorter than the best alternative.

Global warming has opened up a route mariners have been craving for centuries - a shorter journey from Canada to Europe. A large sea freighter became the first cargo vessel to successfully navigate the hazardous Arctic Northwest Passage (pictured) between Canada and Greenland

The 75,000 deadweight-tonne Nordic Orion, built in 2011 and specially strengthened to cross icy waters, left the Canadian Pacific port of Vancouver in early September with a cargo of coking coal and is scheduled to arrive in the Finnish port of Pori on October 7, according to AIS shipping data.

Cosmo, RIP

In case you hadn't heard, Jonah Goldberg's internet-famous dog, Cosmo, died on Friday after 13 years of happily tormenting the local squirrels. After reading about him and his adventures for so many years I feel the loss as well.

Cosmo the Wonderdog is gone. He was the best dog I've ever known. He was a better dog than I had realized dogs could be.  He was a rescue with the odds stacked against him that came to our rescue in more ways than I can count or describe. We can only hope to love anything as unconditionally as he loved us. But we did our best. And his sudden absence feels like the soul of our home has been vacuumed out.  He went as gently as we could manage. Maybe I will write a proper farewell to him over the weekend when I have the emotional resources to do it. He deserves it (how many dogs can boast to having both chased wild caribou in the Canadian Rockies and to having peed in Christopher Hitchens's home?). For now, all I can manage to say without breaking down is he was such good boy, the best I ever knew.

Cosmo RIP

Researchers Believe There Are Just 10 Basic Smells

Professor Jason Castro  of Bates College in Maine, and Prof Chakra Chennubhotla, of the University of Pittsburgh, have been exploring the subject and detail their findings in a paper called "Categorical Dimensions of Human Odor Descriptor Space Revealed by Non-Negative Matrix Factorization."

...Using this data, the researchers have created what they call a 10-dimensional representation of "olfactory space" - in effect, the equivalent to the range of light wavelengths or soundwaves that affect what we perceive as color or sound.

Their theory is that it could be possible to categorize all smells as being a particular combination of 10 smell factors, namely:

  • chemical;
  • decayed;
  • fragrant;
  • fruity (but not citrus);
  • lemon;
  • minty or peppermint;
  • popcorn;
  • pungent;
  • sweet; or
  • woody or resinous.
The researchers say their next goal is to use this theory to explore whether its possible to predict how a particular compound will smell to humans, based solely on its chemical structure.

I wonder where bacon falls in this scheme.

15 Underrated Movies From The 2000s That Are Really Worth Watching

Well of these I've only seen The Grey (which was pretty good) and parts of The Fall which has some amazing non-CGI visuals. I really should watch the rest since they sound fairly interesting.

Helium Crisis...Averted

The government may be shutdown but the Helium Must Flow.

"The U.S. holds vast helium reserves which it sells to scientists and private industry. According to NPR, a new law was needed to allow the helium to continue to flow. Congress passed it late last week, but only after a year-long lobbying effort and intense debate (and in the end, Senator Ted Cruz opposed the measure). Can a new bipartisanship rise out of this cooperation? Or will hot air prevail on Capitol Hill? (Insert your helium joke here.)"

4 The Cultural Marxist Origins of Modern Progressivism Most people when they think of Marxism, think of the Soviet Union and its abject failure. Indeed, most people feel that Marxism is not a threatÂ… even the Communist Chinese have embraces Capitalism, of a sorts. Marxism, though, is not only still a threat, but is on the verge of (if it has already not achieved) overthrowing the West. It is not the classical Marxism that focused on economic aspects, but cultural Marxism, which focuses in on immanentizing the eschaton by cultural and social upheaval. Shame is worth seeing if only for a complete and total understanding as to why Michael Fassbender had no problem at all with doing full frontal nudity.

Pandorum is a decent flick and I agree that Quaid is great.   I happen to like Ben Foster's hi I'm Ben Foster and I look like I'm going to have a psychotic break and kill everyone any second now thing and it works for the movie.

I wish you fast healing. Burns suck, and they take longer to heal than anything short of a tendon. Cooking means plenty of opportunities to be stupid about heat, and I think I've done them all: reaching into deep-frying oil to adjust something with my fingers, picking up a hot cast-iron pan, stirring a steaming pot with a short spoon (steam burns can be really nasty).

Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit Chelsea at October 01, 2013 10:31 PM (CA2NO) Well, my local airport has been shut down since mid afternoon. Apparently a guy in the security line claimed he had a bomb. He was arrested. A second man who had just gotten off a plane was arrested. The airport was evacuated due to two suspicious packages and they were searching for more. The govt tried to block WWII veterans from their Memorial. They failed. Some idiot on twitter suggested that the govt should reinforce the Memorial with pillboxes and elderly Germans manning them. Dave at Garfield Ridge had an excellent post just below this one. Longer than an Ace movie review, but well worth the read.

39 Yeah, American liberalism isn't really Orwellian (for the most part). It's more Huxleyan, if that's a word. It's all about "If it feels good, do it."

Where they do get kind of Orwellian is by adding "...and we'll be the ones to decide what feels good" to that slogan.

Today I watched the boy spawn take the oath as he was sworn in to service of the U.S. Army.  Kinda cool and kinda "Holy shit this mama is gonna melt the hell down".   I did fine though.  Hubbymayhem was okay also.  The 7yr old girl spawn is already drawing pictures to send to her brother and asking "When is bubby coming home?"  That may not end well.

Hope you all have a peace filled shut down.  Happy Oblabocare Day!

The Grey and The Descent are both fantastic.

I can't quite recommend Shame because it's brutal.   It doesn't pull any punches in showing the ugly side to addiction and to addicts.   The addiction in this case is sex and it has some of the least erotic sex scenes you'll ever see.   It's very very well done but very depressing.

I really liked Immortals but that's the kind of thing I like.   Depending on mood, I either love or hate Valhalla Rising.

The rest are all good though The Life Aquatic ratchets the twee up to twelvety.

111 The "decay" smell is that of pnictogens, i.e. nitrogen containing compounds and its congeners (P, As, Sb, and Bi). It is the smell that makes urine smell like urine, crap smell like crap, and chocolate smell like chocolate. Too much of is smells bad, but in small amounts it is a pleasing smell and is found in chocolate and in many perfumes. I've always had a theory that people with a piss or poop fetish may have it because the wiring in their brains recognizes heavy doses of pnictogens the same way that regular people recognize those more sparse doses: A pleasing smell.

169 Asked why the government is not releasing information on how many people enrolled Tuesday, Julie Bataille, the director of CMSÂ’ office of communications, said that the data is still being processed.

“I would just point to historical experience getting data and what we have seen with other implementation efforts over time,” Bataille said. “And what we know that it takes some time to pull accurate data and information together so we will be able to do that for you as soon as we can and we’ll make sure we let you know what that schedule will be."

Secondly, hearing and vision are analog, not digital (or decimal as the case may be). Thirdly, people are not identical and some people have smell (or taste) deficiencies (or surpluses) that others do not. Fourthly, that's just stupid. A billion possible chemical combinations that don't necessarily relate or have common components and they fall into ten scent categories? Fifthly, what about dogs? Did they interview dogs?

206 "Fragrant" is a bullshit descriptor if you're trying to include it on a short list of the few smells that supposedly exist.

All "fragrant" really means is that it smells good.

As for where bacon comes in on that list, well, if I really have to choose one of those categories, I guess I'd say "woody/resinous". The main component of bacon's smell is smoke, which I'd put in the wood category.

   It's funny, what mike said about being a vet, and giving special recognition to those who have served.

   Funny, and so true.  Hard to describe this without seeming elitist, and I do NOT intend to give that impression.

   It's a brotherhood that must be experienced to be understood.  A commonality, that holds whether you were in the mess hall or the sharpest point.

  That bond, or brotherhood, transcends time and distance. I marvel at it sometimes, and feel great pride in belonging to this select company.

BTW, it still amuses me to think back to pictures I've seen of nuclear subs surfaced at the North Pole - with open water. That was in the early 1960's, and we haven't seen that in decades.

253 Problem is the arrest threat just might intimidate the aging vets into changing plans. Many are in failing health and can't stand to get over-heated or exert themselves much. These HonorFlights are incredibly fast for that reason. They keep them in climate controlled comfort thru the flight and buses and just wheel them out for a very brief trip through the monument and then whisk them back into the climate controlled bus quickly. Being out in the elements for hours -- even just a sunny early fall day -- is really hard on them.

255 Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio has a trip scheduled to depart from Toledo next Wednesday, October 9. “We will make the call this Friday to determine if the flight is still a go, or if we will have to re-schedule,” Armstrong explains. He says they are considering going ahead with the trip even if the government is still on shutdown, but when he called the parks service, he was told they would face arrest. Armstrong says, “I said, are you kidding me? You’re going to arrest a 90/91-year-old veteran from seeing his memorial? If it wasn’t for them it wouldn’t be there. She said, ‘That’s correct sir.’” When he asked for her name, he says she did not give it to him and then promptly hung up the phone. http://tinyurl.com/p93jt8r See the update at the bottom.

359 Re. "Dove for Men"... last winter I went to buy some lip balm and saw a new brand "especially for men" made by a major cosmetics/lipstick manufacturer. (I've forgotten the maker now.) So I buy a package to test it out and get it out at home and the top comes off like a freakin' lipstick tube---the cap wasn't just a little knob right at the top like on all the other lip balms like Chapstick or Blistex but went almost the full length of the tube like a lipstick; and the balm tube part twisted up just like a lipstick too! The only thing not lipsticky about it was the balm head was flat like Blistex and not rounded like a lipstick.

So some brilliant suit said, "Hey, we've got this new product we want to market to men and we've got all these lipstick tubes we're making already. Why don't we save a crap-load of money and just put the men's lip balm in the lipstick tubes we already have?!"

370 Maet and underrated movies! Of the ones listed, 2x thumbs up for "The Guard". See it, see it, see it. "Life Aquatic" is defitely worth a watch. The summary covers it pretty well. "The Descent" is a reasonably well done flick, better than it deserves to be. "Pandorum" is... eh. I wanted to like it, but, there were things that bugged me about it. Starts off strong, though. "Moon" is frustrating. Rockwell's great, it's an entertaining flick on first viewing. But, it's got a few "why the hell's?" in the story that drag it down big time. Normally I give entertaing scifi a pass on implausibilities, but the holes were so integral to the logic of the story that it implodes.

The last paragraph of the article about the woman who got the letter from her father 69 years after he died in WW2, my added emphasis, close-tags don't fail me now: Eddington-SmithÂ’s father is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. He was among the more than 400,000 Americans who died in World War II. Of the some 16 million U.S. service members in the war, less than 2 million are alive today. The Veterans Administration estimates that by 2036, there will be no surviving World War II vets.

You want to talk shitstorm? The guy who campaigned the idea of the WWII Memorial was from NW Ohio (no, did not live to see it finished), and his Cong., Marcy Kaptur, treats it like her personal property. Being the best of the good democrats, no way will she get maneuvered into knocking down the barriers. My bet is on her "people" getting some unions and Legion posts together with a tad of sweet sweet grant money to do a local celebration at which she will speak on wicked Republicanness being why the guys couldn't go.

She will be safe in asserting this, as there are no Republicans in her district. There are, however, two Independents running for mayor of Toledo and no Democrats. And two of the big suburb cities have Independent mayors who in another dimension might be recognized as Republicans. But not there.

The people showing up at doctors' offices and emergency rooms, telling the receptionist or admitting nurse that they want their ObamaCare, that they have ObamaCare, that it's covered by ObamaCare---when they have never bought a policy. The low-information welfare-class voter is going to just assume they can get ObamaCare when they need it--no matter what PR campaigns are run for it. (And the "I'm covered" TV campaign they're running? That just tells people that they're already covered, as far as the low-information, not-very-careful-listener citizen is concerned.) Mark my words: It will become a common sight at ER admissions desks to hear arguments from the patients when they're told they have to give their insurance or payment information: "Gimme that ObamaCare, don't be hasslin' me for that. ObamaCare's gonna pay for it."

460 If it happens, you better act quickly, bcause the little fascist and his friends will crack down hard and there is plenty enough hate on the other side to follow through to allow things to be crushed before moderate heads prevail. The American Revolution was really won in 1775, when royal control was lost and local Patriots made it very plain to local Tories that the only two options were to either get lost or support the new program. Most got with the new program, because there were no Brits nearby to help out. After that, only one time did the Brits ever really have reliable locals in numbers--South Carolina after the fall of Charleston.

So the small business owner either goes along with the Park Service's demands, or someone else steps in. Last deployment - '08-'09, FOB Lightning, Gardez.  No Marines, but we had Army, Navy, Air Force.  Everybody lived in b-huts - shitty plywood buildings with half-finished cubicle rooms.  Pretty much the same accomadations, regardless of rank or branch.  Except the AF got $100 a month for "substandard living conditions."  I think they stopped that a while back, but it's a long-running joke.

He's reorganizing and reprioritizing....with a bit of going Galt. He is dead nuts spot on with his healthcare posts, though. The Feds have clusterfarked this to the point where costs rose 25%, then they said "oh, my, it's clusterfarked -- we need reform" and munged it a bit more, which raised costs another 30%. Then they claimed that "the little guy" needed relief and kludged it again. They've been doing this since WWII ( http://tinyurl.com/nnopzta ) and the result is that healthcare now costs roughly FIVE TIMES what it should in a free market -- and that's exactly the same healthcare.

Because they freak if there's something that's not under their control!

I think the result of that would be driving up vet costs more than anything, and the AMA would start burning down veterinary colleges or something.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at October 02, 2013 01:30 AM (qyfb5)

Probably both if it gets too popular.

Actually, I think the solution is obvious, simple, easy, fast, and can potentially fly under the radar -- allow vets to work on people, if the people sign a release. I know there are some I'd trust more than most doctors.

Posted by: cthulhu at October 02, 2013 01:27 AM (T1005)

oh hells yes. they are more observant and more creative problem solvers too. i would totally let the vets i work with work on me. i like them better as drs than most of the folks with MD after their names. You HAVE to pay attention when your patient cant talk. i think that vet medicine is still more of an art, and that medical drs are becoming technicians

and you know what? i think the little girl does think the big roping cows are something like goats. and you know what that means? She probably thinks THEY ARE ALL HERS!!!!! and if she doesn't already she likely plotting how to take them all over. I have my friend who looks like a skinny mean santa ride her with them and it was hilarious. she wanted to meet them and resented that he was asking her to pay attention to the fact he was on her back and wanted to ride. I got on and she was all rainbows and lollypops, carried me as careful as an egg. i think she knew i was sick and was taking care of me.

It all starts fitting into place when you realize that all the money spent on "healthcare" in this country is not actually about healthcare -- it's actually a protection racket where you pay "insurance" money to not be wildly astronomically overcharged if you should ever happen to be sick or injured....which is pretty much inevitable. And when I say, "wildly overcharged", I'm talking about 40,000% markup -- http://tinyurl.com/p7kdyou .

So, where you could pay for medicine like a service and get mildly ripped-off because you had to be treated today and you hired a doctor on a weekend and he charged you $250 for a quarter-hour visit....you instead pay money like a protection racket and are charged $250 for every month where you might not be charged $83,046 for something that is readily available for $200 in areas the protection racket doesn't control....but which you might really, really need badly some day.

And they honest-to-God really intend to crush you with those $83,046 treatments because you dared to show their racket up as extortion. Kind o' brings to mind one of their heroes: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/v/vladimirle125951.html

Yeah, 'cause havin' babies is so much different now than the way it has been for.....uh.....the last tens of thousands of years.

And before someone comes in and talks about deaths during childbirth....for every 1000 mothers, there were 6-9 deaths during childbirth in 1900 -- to 7.7 deaths in 100,000 mothers in 1997 -- with the overwhelming majority of this drop occurring prior to 1950 [ http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm4838a2.htm ] Problem is, all this health insurance hoo-hah kicked in during WWII....after the maternal mortality had already dropped.

But nobody does unless they step out of line. Illegals don't. Workers with health insurance don't. Medicare and VA recipients don't. The only people who would remotely pay that much are people who are reasonably successful and are not paying protection money.

It's like the "rack rate" for hotels -- Orbitz doesn't do that, even if you book that afternoon. Travelocity doesn't pay that crap. Idiots driving by on the interstate don't pay that; neither do AAA members. It's an inflated price designed to enhance the value of middlemen.

Posted by: Baron bon Mot at October 01, 2013 11:07 PM (JBLt6)

693 ....and let's be really, really, really clear about this. If there is a 1-in-1000 chance that your $300,000 home will burn down in the next 10 years, insurance is when you pay $100/year in fire insurance.

Mathematically, this is worth $300 over the 10-year period, because that's 1/1000 of $300,000 -- so if they really knew the odds (1-in-1000) and the value of the home is really $300,000, and if they insured all the homes in the area (so no cherry-picking), that would be the cost to the insurer. The premiums -- $1000 over 10 years -- would have plenty of room for brokers' commissions, administrative costs, taxes, unexpected coincidences, and profit.

In fact, you'll note that 70% of each payment is skim, admin, taxes, unceratainties, and profit. So, what happens if you insure against lunch, or your phone bill? You know that both are going to happen, mostly.....and you know pretty much what drives them and what their costs are. Would you pay for an insurance policy, 70% of which would go to things that weren't on your plate, that provided you with a midday meal every day?

If you

Especially given things were open on previous shutdowns, as I know by personal experience.

Sorry.  I have to respond.  Prez Fuckface and his band of Walking Colostomy Bags are not "this nation."  They may be running the show for the time being, but they will never have the power to dishonor people with honor.  The only people they are dishonoring are themselves.

If they link up with Riders, and show up with half a million escorts, and are taken through the memorial with reverence and respect, brushing aside the SCoaMF's minions, they will not be dishonored. On the contrary, they will know that a grateful nation values their service, no matter what petty bullshit the despicable douchenozzles in the governing class say or do.

I don't think I can talk about what I thought it was.  But rumors and hearsay indicate that the BSA negotiations are going about as well as the SOFA talks in Iraq.  Which would be the best possible outcome.

707 Just heard that at a meeting this morning, the AFG side got so pissed that they kicked our guys out.  Hoping this carries over to the other 60K over here too.

709 People will probably be fussing about this today. Obama has repeatedly reached Boehner by phone - not to negotiate, but instead to remind him that heÂ’s not negotiating http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/this-time-its- different-negotiations-have-no-place-in-latest-fiscal- crisis/2013/10/01/d0ef78b6-2aba-11e3-8ade- a1f23cda135e_print.html Obama is trolling Boehner.

713 The 70s for me were flat green fatigues! Went into the service in Sept of 70. My late Father was a WWII vet, I would like to see a Park Service puke keep him away from that Memorial.

714 Being irresolute, and also non-essential, I shall now  go back to what I was doing. It WAS productive ... honest it was!    Oh, hell, what was I doing before I got plugged in here for the millionth time...oh, wait, now I remember! It was something about asteroids causing an extinction level event, and I kind of remember clapping wildly and yelling something like "burn, baby burn!" ... well, that's pretty wishy- washy, but I was probably influenced by seeing an image of the Hulk. Smash!!

715 Your "is govt a bit bloated" stat of the day....

95% of Dept of Education staff are "non-essential"...

I think they low-balled it Tex....

716 You morons think the Obamacare exchange mess is an abysmal failure right? Well wait until you need you some actual healthcare. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/09/30/2- investigators-nursing-home-patient-catches-fire-left-to-smolder-outside/ "The video shows frantic workers inside the building. Staff members spray Lewis with a fire extinguisher; then they roll him back outside, where his smoldering body covered in foam sits motionless. “Doesn’t look like they were trying to take care of Michael,” his sister says. State nursing home regulators say spraying Lewis directly with the extinguisher was against the rules. Dr. Stanley Zydlo, an emergency response expert, watched the video and says there were numerous additional problems. “There didn’t seem to be anybody in control as to who was to do what,” Zydlo says." This is what they have planned for you, basically. Now get back to work, someone has to pay for this shit.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at October 02, 2013 02:50 AM (sSHNB)

719 If the Administration insists on excluding the vets from the Monument and does so with even slight force, we may have a new "bonus army" moment on our hands. I think the President and Dems are over-playing their hand, but I'm sure the stupid party will figure out a way to either cave with honor (the consultant / McCain position) or otherwise do or likely say something stupid (the Todd Akin position.) Have a great Day all.

 "I really should watch the rest since they sound fairly interesting."

Before you do that, look at Rotton Tomatoes audience rating. Most are "underated" for a good reason. Of the 15 films listed, there are at least 3 you should definately miss: The New World (interesting idea but silly execution; also Pocahantas has some obvious and distracting collogen lip injections), Valhalla Rising (it would be better and more meaningful if you just dropped some LSD while visting Jamestown, VA), and the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (just go to bed a room that's too warm and have a weird dream, or take a nap in an isolation tank).
