The National Park Service: Assholes in Green

There's not having money to continue your services and then there's going far out of your way to deliberately inconvenience people and spitefully deny them any pleasure whatsoever. Apparently the NPS has chosen the latter.

As we reported last Thursday, the historic Cliff House Restaurant - a privately owned profitable business which sits on land controlled by the National Park Service - was suddenly ordered to close by the Obama administration on October 3.

Then on Monday, October 7, with little fanfare, Cliff House's owners Dan and Mary Hountalas decided to defy the government's closure order and instead re-open for business, to the delight of the hundreds of tourists and locals who dine there every day. When word leaked out that the Cliff House had re-opened, the local National Park Service office consulted with Washington DC and then issued a second (and apparently firmer) order to the owners to re-close the restaurant -who were then forced to unwillingly comply for a second time last night at midnight

Not only are they closing off scenery and oceans, but they also shutting down facilities by force that they don't even run:

The Park Service told Claude Moore Colonial Farm to shut down.

The farm's administrators appealed this directive?-?they explained that the Park Service doesn't actually do anything for the historic site. The folks at the NPS were unmoved. And so, last week, the National Park Service found the scratch to send officers to the park to forcibly remove both volunteer workers and visitors.

Think about that for a minute. The Park Service, which is supposed to serve the public by administering parks, is now in the business of forcing parks they don't administer to close. As Homer Simpson famously asked, did we lose a war?

Bookworm doesn't mince any words in her post, Is The National Park Service The New Gestapo? Which includes an account of how armed NPS employees held a group of senior citizens prisoner for several days when they had the temerity to show up for their pre-paid pre-scheduled tour and stay in Yellowstone national park.

The term Gestapo may seem a bit harsh until you read about some of the casual cruelty of NPS employees directed towards the elderly tourists. But yeah, these are exactly the sort of people who need only the weakest excuse and opportunity to indulge their inner thug. Note that this was only a few days into the shutdown - imagine how they'll be if it goes on a few weeks.

At the beginning of their imprisonment (there's no other word for it), the seniors were shepherded onto a bus. The bus did what tourist buses do in Yellowstone - it stopped when it came abreast of a passing herd of bison. When the seniors attempted to take photos, however, the female ranger in charge took quick exception to this activity - even though the visitors' visual pleasure of the People's national treasure had nothing to do with preserving the park, which is the ranger's sole area of responsibility. Tourists, she said, were not allowed to "recreate."
Once the seniors were delivered to the Old Faithful Inn, which is immediately adjacent to Old Faithful, their captivity began in dead earnest. The seniors were not allowed to set foot outside the hotel, and armed rangers guarded each door - not to protect the tourists from any dangers lurking outside, but to ensure that, without federal permission, even their eyes were denied a view of Yellowstone.

"They looked like Hulk Hogans, armed. They told us you can't go outside," Vaillancourt told the Eagle Tribune. "Some of the Asians who were on the tour said, 'Oh my God, are we under arrest?' They felt like they were criminals."

There were further indignities to come. After two days holding the tourists as prisoners in their hotel, the park service eventually loaded the group onto a bus headed out of Yellowstone. ...Although there was a small toilet on the bus, it was inadequate for the number of seniors, and also difficult for people with impaired movement. Nevertheless, the Nazi Park Service representatives refused to allow the bus to make any bathroom stops during that long drive.

The NPS built up a lot of goodwill over the years and then has managed to completely squander it all over a few days by choosing to be complete dicks to the very people they're supposed to be serving. While the orders may have come from the White House and NPS Director Jonathon Jarvis, they were still willingly carried out by the NPS line personnel.

The NPS has made it clear where they stand with regard to the American people. And so when the shutdown is finally over, I'm expecting a Congressional reckoning for them. If they could pull off this much assholery with only 'essential' staff, then there's a whole lot of very necessary cutting to be done within the NPS.

Quote of the Day

"No matter how disastrously some policy has turned out, anyone who criticizes it can expect to hear: 'But what would you replace it with?' When you put out a fire, what do you replace it with?"

  -- Thomas Sowell

Pathological Altruism

Oakley defines pathological altruism as "altruism in which attempts to promote the welfare of others instead result in unanticipated harm." A crucial qualification is that while the altruistic actor fails to anticipate the harm, "an external observer would conclude [that it] was reasonably foreseeable." Thus, she explains, if you offer to help a friend move, then accidentally break an expensive item, your altruism probably isn't pathological; whereas if your brother is addicted to painkillers and you help him obtain them, it is.
Pathological altruism is at the root of the liberal left's crisis of authority, which we discussed in our May 20 column. The left derives its sense of moral authority from the supposition that its intentions are altruistic and its opponents' are selfish. That sense of moral superiority makes it easy to justify immoral behavior, like slandering critics of President Obama as racist--or using the power of the Internal Revenue Service to suppress them.
And its relation with  Buddhism, 'Idiot Compassion', and Luke Skywalker
What happens if you don't learn compassion? It leads to what Chögyan Trungpa Rinpoche called "idiot compassion" - stealing the term from Gurdjieff. Idiot compassion is when your compassion arises from the desire to be seen as compassionate. Idiot compassion runs all through the Star Wars movies. Amidala is showing idiot compassion when she doesn't want to be seen to "condone an action that will lead us to war," even though her action leads to greater suffering. Anakin shows idiot compassion when he spares Dooku, and Windu shows mastery when he changes his goal from arresting Darth Sidious (did anyone else want him to knock at the door and ask "are you in, Sidious?") to killing him, the action that would have saved untold suffering.

Because people suck.

Avocados!

Are freakier than you know.

Avocados are toxic to almost all animals (including cats and dogs). Humans are a rare exception. It is the only fruit to contain persin, a fatty acid, which, when eaten by animals causes vomiting, diarrhea, and other nasty symptoms. Consumption of large quantities can cause death within twelve hours.

Avocados are berries (fleshy fruits coming from a single ovary). Interestingly, this broad definition of a berry means that bananas, pumpkin, tomatoes, watermelon, and coffee are also berries (you can tell that to the next person who tries to argue that tomatoes are vegetables). Curiously this also excludes strawberries as berries.

Eighty percent of modern avocados originate from one "mother" tree which was patented by mailman Rudolph Hass from California in 1935. The tree survived until 2002 when it died of root rot. Unfortunately Hass only made $5,000 in his lifetime from his patent on the tree because his partner sold cultivars to anyone who wanted to buy them. Subsequently Hass spent the remainder of his life working for the California Mail Service.

Avocado also has an interesting characteristic: it is the only berry with no living animal large enough to spread it through consumption and release as dung. This has led scientists to believe that it co-evolved with prehistoric megafauna that were large enough to eat the fruit whole. The megafauna went extinct but the avocado remained as an unusual monument to an unknown dinosaur.

Surviving 12 Hours in Quicksand

Adam Carolla has pointed many times that you just don't see nearly as much quicksand in the media as you did just a decade or three ago. But that doesn't mean it's not out there.

The runners came back around 3:40 and we talked about using the Personal Locator Beacon. It was a weird conversation because the situation didn't seem super serious. I was stuck in mud and it was cold, but there was no blood. There was no traumatic injury. At four o'clock we hit the beacon because we didn't know when someone might come. We thought that hypothermia would make this a life or death situation.

I was worried about passing out in the water, so I asked if we could create a system to hold me up. We built a raft using Thermarests and driftwood. and I lay on my belly. Every 15 minutes or so, one of the people with me would say, "Hey Robbie, How did this happen? How old are you? Where are you from?"

Did Ariel Castro Pull a David Carradine?

Fair warning - you will probably have a happier, more care-free life if you skip over this item...NOW.

But of course you won't.

In addition, a report forwarded to the state highway patrol "for consideration of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation,"says that Castro was discovered dead in his cell with  his pants and underwear pulled down to his ankles. He had a sheet wrapped around his neck, which was attached to his cell window. There was no suicide note, but officials found a Bible open to John Chapters 2 and 3 and pictures of Castro's family arranged "in a poster-board fashion," according to the report.

Eh - I don't really care or want to know about the hows and whys, I'm just glad he's dead and gone.

86 I keep saying this; IT'S THE UNIONS.

The Federal Government has actually been controlled by the Unions for over 30-40 years.

It's the reason so many so called shutdowns fail. Because the Unions control the optics and they still get paid so there is no benefit.

The Unions are predominantly Democrat/Liberal/Progressive/Protected Classes and is why the Republicans default to liberal positions more and more as that's where the power truly lies; with the Federal Government Workers.

All the tactics you see should remind you of one thing; Union Strike Tactics. This is how they act. We are the Business owner and must be punished and coerced. They make demands that if not met will result in the "business" being shutdown or made difficult to do business.

Once Government workers were allowed to unionize, this result was inevitable.

It's why Wisconsin is now in the black. They crippled the union parasites.

You know, I can just imagine the media coverage of something like this during the Reagan administration. We'd see days of if on the nightly news and Reagan would be castigated and blamed for every inch of it.

115 While the orders may have come from the White House and NPS Director Jonathon Jarvis, they were still willingly carried out by the NPS line personnel. The reason why it is hard to hold hope for this country is that we all know that even if our dream candidate is elected in 2016 and the GOP takes the Senate, nothing will happen to the upper management that issued these orders, orders intended to hurt citizens and tourists. These malignant bureaucrats will go about their merry lives never being pull up short and read out of the government. In a just system they would be ineligible to work for any level of government, in any capacity. They would be given a page in training manuals title, "DO NOT DO THIS." Our electorate isn't remotely concerned. A lot of pain is in store.

157 Here's a question: What was the most recent scifi character to enter mass consciousness? I mean the type of thing where you can reference the character and expect the average person to get the reference. Luke and Han are two obvious examples. Kirk and Spock, of course. I can't really think of any scifi that has had long-lasting cultural staying power in recent decades. Stargate was on for a decade, but nobody is gonna get a Teal'c joke. Picard and Data, of course. Have any scifi character since Next Generation gone mainstream like that? Fantasy has had the Harry Potter and Twilight characters. 500 channels and niche media mean there's been some great scifi ... but it doesn't get mass appeal or awareness. All the Marvel movie characters but they were all invented decades ago.

176 You need to get up tpo speed. VJ was pulling O's pecker long before Reggie back in the Chicago beginning. All of O's premature ejaculation autobiograhies are about something to hide: sociopathic, narcissistic delusions of a sissy boy longing for a father and desperate for a real mother. (Playing spades is code.) Posted by: angel with a sword at October 10, 2013 10:41 PM (hpgw1) I donÂ’t want to get up to speed on them, I would like to be rid of them, for treason and RICO per American Thinker article I put in troll thread. 177 Here's a question: What was the most recent scifi character to enter mass consciousness?

I think the Battlestar Galactica remake reached a few people, the actress who plays Starbuck in the series was on the Big Bang Theory (playing herself from BSG). The whole "frak" thing came from that.

Not as big as Picard though.

Two nights ago, a lady down the street got robbed.  She came home and was getting some things from her car and walking into the house when some guy in a mask and armed with a gun forced his way in and robber her of some jewelry.  Tried to force her to drive him to an ATM to withdraw cash, but she managed to get away.

Something like this has never happened here in the 10 years I've lived here.

I was away on business, and got back last night.  I saw the news crews around the neighbourhood and wondered what happened.  So I check the local news site and then I find out there was an armed robbery right down the street.  I asked my wife if she saw any police cars that night, but she didn't.

So.....I'm going to be much more on guard now.  The same method was used in a string of different robberies near our half of the city.  Police are wondering if it might be the same guy.  Black male, mask, gun.

What gets me is the damned ads on TV, non stop, for the ASPC to donate money. Excuse me, but how many millions does it cost to get some stupid singer with a hushed voice to tell us about the animals in need. How much animal feed could those millions buy or build better shelters? And why don't these "stars" donate a few millions themselves, they wouldn't feel it (and get a tax break themselves)?

What the hell changed from this morning to this evening? That NBC poll that he is touting is such crap with a 43% democrat sample and 20% of the total being government workers. Really? THAT is what has these idiots all worked up???

So the shutdown was all for nothing, right Boehner? We all fought for it to defund/delay Obamacare or the individual mandate and now they are going to CAVE and unconditionally surrender to Obama? All just so we can get rid of the goddamned medical device tax!? Which ALREADY PASSED in the Democrat controlled senate!

311 "America has turned to shit. It is very sad but the general culture has changed dramatically in the last 10 years alone on everything from basic economics to common decency."

Ten years? I started noticing the dry rot in the 1970s.

But the 1980s gave us Reagan, right? Yes, but the country continued to become steadily more shallow and unserious. I remember reading that a single episode's shooting budget of _Miami Vice_ was more money than the entire yearly appropriation for the actual Miami PD vice department. I also remember reading during the debate over whether or not to deploy the Strategic Defense Initiative that a majority of American voters thought we had already built the damned thing!

The 1990s? A culturally healthy and intellectually substantive country could not have taken the Clintons seriously.

So, no, the fundamental problems are not new.

I think every country on a long downslope figures its problems are of relatively recent vintage. The British certainly seem to have. The Romans probably did.

Posted by: Peaches at October 10, 2013 11:07 PM (8lmkt) Sorry to say, but that's were FB comes in again. There are small organizations on there that go and rescue, like the National Puppy Mill Rescue and they use every penny to get these animals and they don't advertise on TV. The pictures they post are sad and happy (they show the before and after). Not as big as ASPC but way more rewarding, because if you want to adopt an animal from them, you better be prepared to proof that you are a responsible owner

Whenever I'm sick I just marathon TV series. Warehouse 13 is one of the most successful recent scifi TV shows ... but it's about as least scifi as you can get. It's just a fantasy show about magic artifacts with the thinnest possible veneer of scifi covering it. But that's what TV makes now because women and girls will watch fantasy shows, but not scifi. And the old audience for scifi, geeky guys, are off playing video games instead of watching TV.

Having grown up in the beautiful Black hills of South Dakota I feel blessed to have experienced the scenic beauty that exists there. However, I am shocked that I am to be the one to inform you that the actions of the NPS and the forest Rangers are far from out of character.

The forest Service and the NPS were among the first Federal agencies to be taken over by the progressive, commie left and the eco-terrorists. They began their infiltration early in the 1970s as hippies and communal types. That they want to not only keep you (tourists and ordinary citizens) out of THEIR forests and parks, but are also willing to terrify and hurt you does not suprise me in the least. Their ultimate goal is to keep you out of THEIR forest and parks. The Hussein shutdown edicts are only the most valid reason they have had to do so. They hate you. They really do.

They are not afraid to hurt you if you attempt to enter THEIR lands. they are a lawless bunch of commie, statist, totalitarian fucks. Some of whom I once called my friends. I was never a leftist. Only a libertarian who refused to judge others. Well. I judge these assholes as guilty. Guilty of hypocrasy.

There's probably a term for it someone else knows, a situation where someone was always an asshole but you had a good impression of them until they proved they were an asshole in front of you. Our local CCL is odd and standoffish at times. Seems to come with the territory. But she has given decent lives to more deserving abandoned felines than I can count. Most of them perfectly pleasant cats who got dumped by irresponsible idiot owners.

However, and this is a key point, she is one of the CCLs who actually spays and neuters her new arrivals who haven't had that done. Some CCLs do not. Some actively resist the very thought.

In other news, murdered DEA Special Agent "Kiki" Camerana's killer goes free in El Mejico due to a "technicality" (the cartel saying is plomo or plata- lead or silver?).  Mexico ignored the US request for extradition.  Two days later the White House says it is "deeply concerned."  I'm sure.

Mexico is a fucking failed state.  It needs to be reined it.  Camerana was killed 30 years ago.  Let us not forget, because our own government has.   Fox News has the story.

515 At the current level of borrowing and spending it is mathematically impossible to pay off our debt of 17.5 Trillion dollars.

Hell it's probably mathematically and politically impossible to do it no matter what.

In order to pay off our debt we would have to commit 600 billion to paying it down every year, it would take 30 years and we could not rack up additional debt in the interim. If we committed 175 billion it would take 100 years.

So at some point it all collapses or we do some sort of accounting trick that makes it all vanish.

2.  I don't think "Gestapo" is too over the top for what the NPS is doing right now.  The German Gestapo didn't start out as mass murdering secret police; they started out as thugs who had the force of government behind them, and they ran with it, just like the NPS is doing.  Somebody better smack the NPS in the teeth, soon (either physically or with lawyers) or they are going to learn a very, very bad lesson from this business, just like all the rest of the well-armed alphabet soup agencies will.

There seemed to be some theme going, but I just couldn't put my finger on it. Dare I wonder what the next 400 comments might hold? My late, sainted mother-in-law and husband, Chicagoans, lived in Florida during the war. (He managed to join up with only one eye! He taught pilots celestial navigation.) They had an avocado tree in their yard and loads of them on the ground for the taking all the time. They had no idea what they were and never touched them. Avocados can be dull and tasteless. Or icky and overripe. BUT, given good, ripe, tasty avocados, mrs mindful webworker makes a mighty fine guacamole! You don't like 'em? More for me! And folks, to make avocados tasty, remember what Marge Simpson said, "You might say the secret ingredient is salt!" Salt? Did someone say salt? Nasty weather at Cape Hatteras the last 2-3 days. Lots of standing water on the roads, have to creep through some spots. I haven't looked at the forecast, but I assume that this is going to clear up. Right now it is overcast, but the wind has dropped today, and no more rain. Terrific lightening strikes out in the ocean last night. Temp right now is mid-60's. Personally, I like it this way, but it isn't conducive to walks on the beach for the suntaney lot.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at October 11, 2013 12:05 AM (yh0zB) What pisses me off even more is that so many on our side did not object, and eventually they bought into it! Ever hear of "Red State"? The Media pulled this shit in the election of 1992 because to portray Bill Clinton as "RED" was counter productive to the media's efforts to get him elected. They stuck Bush with it, and they've kept that shit on us ever since. We should have objected vociferously, and we should have refused to go alone. Democrats are fucking Red Communist bastards, and that color needs to be shoved down the Dem Commie Bastard throat! It's subtle little mind-fucks like this that help them get away with shit.

Where Gainax came from.  They started as these guys peddling garage kits.  A garage kit is a resin scale figure made in limited quantities of a character from a series like Madoka from Kimagure Orange Road.  After several battles with the Japanese tax man, Gainax is still around making anime and even has stores that only sell Evangelion items.

726 Don't mean to whine or complain, but this post right at the top quotes my article about Cliff House, and yet (due to a typo glitch, almost certainly) the link to the article was not included: "Apparently the NPS has chosen the latter. As we reported last Thursday, the historic Cliff House Restaurant..." Missing from the "Apparently..." sentence is the link to what is being quoted -- which is this: http://tinyurl.com/ljysera (Had to TinyURL it to make it fit.) I appreciate the (intended) link -- I just wish it was there! Here's the headline and more text, for the curious: ---------------- Shutdown Showdown: SF’s Cliff House Defies Obama Admin, Reopens — and Is Forced to Close AGAIN "The saga of San Francisco’s Cliff House took a series of dramatic turns this week as the owners engaged in a political and legal duel with the federal government. As we reported last Thursday, the historic Cliff House restaurant — a privately owned profitable business which sits on land controlled by the National Park Service — was suddenly ordered to close by the Obama administration on October 3. Then on Monday, October 7, with little fanfare, Cliff House’s owners Dan and Mary Hountalas decided to defy the government’s closure order and instead re-open for business, to the delight of the hundreds of tourists and locals who dine there every day. When word leaked out that the Cliff House had re-opened, the local National Park Service office consulted with Washington, D.C., and then issued a second (and apparently firmer) order to the owners to re-close the restaurant; the owners were then forced to unwillingly comply for a second time last night at midnight: The famed Cliff House restaurant has been forced to shut its doors for the remainder of the federal government shutdown, after it defied orders by reopening earlier this week. Diners who learned of the new closure were none too happy, to say the least: “That’s outrageous! Are you serious?” Hubbard said as she walked out of the restaurant, the sunset glazing the windows behind her. “It is very stupid! Why are people deprived of a job? Why do the rest of us have to stop enjoying the parks?” Hubbard wasn’t alone in her outrage at missing out on the $10 endive salad or the $27 mahi mahi. “You’re kidding me,” said Ken Evans, who was visiting from Visalia and stopped by the Cliff House to take in the view. “You know what, I would stay open if I were them. You can’t close these things down.” The Hountalas family, who have owned and operated the Cliff House for 40 years, issued a press release over the weekend explaining in no uncertain terms that they were being forced to close against their wishes and had decided to defy the closure order as a matter of principle — and finances:..." etc.

I suspect that's coming as everything becomes steadily more transparent and data-mined. Both Left and Right will be able to instantly identify and ostracize and boycott one another. On the spot, in real time.

See Bruce Sterling's short story _Maneki Neko_.

Of course, this is just another step towards Left and Right realizing that they can't amicably share the the same polity any longer, hence another step towards disintegration and secession, hence all to the good.

Jesus, what is it with the Sox beards this year? I watched the Sox-Marlins games, and while I admired Boston's skill, the beards make them look like Hell's Angels. I'm sure they have good and rotten guys on the team, like any team does, but when I saw the Red Soxes dugout for the first time I thought: Good God, what a wretched hive of scum and villainy!

If I was in in a dark alley and saw the Red Sox in street clothes walking toward me, I'd piss myself. Then I'd reach for my concealed carry gun.

Because he forced them beyond their supply lines, they had to forage from the locals, thus turning apathetic onlookers into active opponents. Yet it was later found to be a really bad idea. Rather than end alcohol abuse, alcoholism soared, leading the founding of AA. A bunch of criminals were greatly enriched, foisting the Kennedy clan upon the country to add insult to injury.

And it was repealed. A stupid mistake pushed through by fools presuming to claim the moral high ground. How much crap do we have to live through to do the same with Ocare?

782 The reason why it is hard to hold hope for this country is that we all know that even if our dream candidate is elected in 2016 and the GOP takes the Senate, nothing will happen to the upper management that issued these orders, orders intended to hurt citizens and tourists. These malignant bureaucrats will go about their merry lives never being pull up short and read out of the government.

In a just system they would be ineligible to work for any level of government, in any capacity. They would be given a page in training manuals title, "DO NOT DO THIS."

My suspicion is that the rangers didn't have much appetite for a crackdown, even if they had the manpower. They didn't go into this line of work to keep people out of nature, and I got no sense from any of them that they had suddenly acquired that desire.

Just my opinion but the use of "gestapo" and other Nazi language is just stupid in these situations.  "Assholes" I get, and some of them are, but no one is shooting people or rounding them up or gassing them or throwing their bodies in ovens.  It's just a sad and ridiculous for conservatives to go Godwin in this situation as it is for liberals to do it.

I agree that it is over the top to use Nazi references but some of the tactics, at the order of the administration, are disconcerting. I also don't think anyone using Nazi references think people are going to be rounded up by the federal government for extermination. But they do want to make the point about the abuse of power and how absolutely disgusting it is for some members of the federal government (e.g., park rangers) directed by the administration to be behaving the way they are towards their fellow Americans. I don't think that is an unreasonable point of view.

So how about you and others who have tried to play the role of "Reasonable Guy" direct your outrage at the major problem in this situation (i.e., behavior of the federal government), NOT the minor problem (i.e., bunch of blog commenters using exaggerated language).
