Overnight Open Thread (10-13-2013)
— Maetenloch

Sorry tonight's ONT is gonna be on the minimalist side. I had a gum graft on Friday and while the procedure was painless, the after-effects really knocked me for a loop. The last two days have mostly involved sleeping, vicodin, ramen, and the occasional operation of heavy machinery.  So you'll have to mostly entertain yourselves.

The Beginnings of OCP

Abandoned by the city Oakland residents are organizing their own private police forces.

Oakland has an understaffed police department and is the city with the highest robbery rate* in America. In the last few weeks three separate campaigns have been started on Crowdtilt in order to fund four months of private security patrols in three different section of Rockridge. Near $35,000 have been raised so far, and two of the three projects have raised enough funds to ensure they will move forward.

"We shouldn't have to do this," says Steven Kirsh, who is running the last of the three Rockridge campaigns, "but we need to do this." He doesn't see the Oakland Police Department suddenly getting more resources, so in order to protect his belongings, family and property value, the $82 per household doesn't seem like much to ask, for 12 hours of patrolling five days a week. For a four month trial it will work out to less than a dollar a day.

The Birth of Microsoft

Paul Allen, a college dropout from Seattle, wandered into the cluttered kiosk one snowy day in December 1974 and saw that the new issue of Popular Electronics featured a home computer for hobbyists, called the Altair, that was just coming on the market. He was both exhilarated and dismayed. Although thrilled that the era of the "personal" computer seemed to have arrived, he was afraid that he was going to miss the party. Slapping down 75 cents, he grabbed the issue and trotted through the slush to the Currier House room of Bill Gates, a Harvard sophomore and fellow computer fanatic from Lakeside High School in Seattle, who had convinced Allen to drop out of college and move to Cambridge. "Hey, this thing is happening without us," Allen declared. Gates began to rock back and forth, as he often did during moments of intensity. When he finished the article, he realized that Allen was right. For the next eight weeks, the two of them embarked on a frenzy of code writing that would change the nature of the computer business.

Azerbaijan Has The Most Efficient Elections in the World

They already have the results tabulated even before the voting begins.

"Florida's hanging chads ain't going nothing on Azerbaijan. Fully a day before the polls were to open, election results were accidentally released via an official smartphone app, confirming what everybody already knew - the election was rigged from the beginning. The official story is that the app's developer had mistakenly sent out the 2008 election results as part of a test. But that's a bit flimsy, given that the released totals show the candidates from this week, not from 2008."

Madonna Turning Muslim?

Well about as much as she was Catholic and then Jewish.

"I am building schools for girls in Islamic countries and studying the Qur'an. I think it is important to study all the holy books. As my friend Yaman always tells me, a good Muslim is a good Jew, and a good Jew is a good Christian, and so forth. I couldn't agree more. To some people this is a very daring thought."

Just wait until she starts stripping out of a burka on stage and making out with Mohammed.

19 The Secular Miracle of the English-speaking Peoples There is something unique, something wonderful, about our civic heritage which defines us not by geography, or by race or ethnicity. Yet again, MEP Daniel Hannon eloquently points out one of the major roots of this shared value, chief among which is the rule of law and the law of the land — the idea that everyone, is bound by the law and must be subject to it. This unique aspect is embodies in the unique genius of the Magna Carta. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3356

Actually the procedure itself took less than an hour and was more or less painless. But I had a lot of swelling the next day (for that sexy chipmunk look) and a dull aching kind of pain. Mostly I felt like I got punched in the face but as long as I kept up the vicodin it wasn't bad. Mostly it just sapped my energy for the next 36 hours.

Unfortunately for me receding gums runs in the family so this is necessary to head off future problems. The next procedure is in November. So I have that to look forward to.

Ann Althouse was trolling her blog patrons today.

"Those who visit veterans monuments — even if they too are vets — ought to show respect for the monument, not perform political theater, especially when it's about another topic entirely (like the budget or healthcare policy). An antiwar protest at a veterans monument would make more sense, but even then, it should honor those who have served.

Quite aside from respect for war monuments, I don't accept protesters screwing with government property. These barricades are not theirs to move around for the purpose of making statements. Use your own signs, your own words and gestures if you've got something to say."

Frigga.  Greater goddess. Wife of Odin.  Lawful neutral.  Symbol: large cat. Able to control all forms of weather.  If there is a breeze blowing she can spy in that area.  Has a necklace you must save against, if you fail to save you end up a drooling Moron flattering her.  In battle she can shape change, starting with dragon forms and then going to avian forms. Handmaidens are Valkyries - Fulla, Vara, Lofn, Vor, Gna, Eira, Hlin, Syn, Vjofn, and Snotra.  She also spins flax into gold for Odin's clothes.  She is worshiped by housewives and those seeking marriage.

169 In a dog that didn't bark story of human progress ... the massive cyclone that hit India has only resulted in about 20 deaths or so. This is actually a sign of India's progress. A decade or more ago similar storms routinely killed thousands, even tens of thousands. India's govt appears to have done a fairly competent job of evacuating its citizens and putting them in shelters that could withstand the storm. Thousands of homes were destroyed but the people and the govt were able to act competently and get out of the way. Good for India. 10 or 20 years ago this would have been an epic humanitarian disaster.

Yeah, 2010 is a pretty sucky film. Great looking flick with some decents moments though. One thing that always bugged me about it was the casting... maybe it was the acting... dunno... but it just seemed "off". Dunno why Clarke felt the need to go the way he did in 2010. The expansion on 2001 was already done rather well in "Lost World of 2001". He should have stuck with that stuff.

When people try to do "modernistic" and have furniture that in retrospect looks like it was designed by Torquemada, it always winds up looking kinda lame.

Its like those "modern" F.L. Wright houses that wound up being maintenance nightmares, look goofy rather than modern today, and never really worked right for the buyers.

When people force modern, they almost always overreach.

I hope all the people at the DC Veteran's Protest were able to leave peaceably.  I am concerned that some of our public spirited, nonpolitical, public safety officers might show their frustration by harassing or arresting the last few protesters.

After all, our petulant commander in chief has set a terrible example with his unprecedented, unpresidential and idiotic decision to barrycade the parks and the monuments across the nation to start with.

also, Gateway Pundit has a post on LAX.

The tactical withdrawal plan for this kinda stuff in the future should probably make sure the last to leave are in wheelchairs or otherwise visibly disabled to maximize propaganda value should something like that happen.

Lol. No, not that particular one. Some of the other stuff though. Was thinking along the lines of the moonwatcher stuff and assorted concepts that were left out of the original. No need for the sort of answers he later came up with that seem to contradict what was the background for the original. "Lost Worlds" is a mish mash of stuff, but what's in there is better than what came later with 2010 etc.

326 Maet- Do you have a bruised face? I had one last year to save a front tooth that I used to brush too hard, and my dentist had filled in near the gums several times. It didnÂ’t hurt until I got home. The dentist, mine sent me to a specialist, told me I would have a bruised face because IÂ’m thin. I have never heard that one. I take a lot of meds and one that is a very strong anti-inflammatory & I stopped taking that for 8 or 9 days before that. IÂ’m a bleeder, it had nothing to do with my weight. I went to get my hair cut and my stylist who I have known forever offered to cover it up with make up because I was making her hurt. Be careful or you might need a touch up, in other words a second time. Carol

Same here. Haven't broken it out in ages. But, I recall it had, apart from the technical and film related stuff, some goofy, some weird and some clunky stuff, mixed in with really, really good stuff. The "Dawn of Man" chapters were great and I can't understand why they didn't go with it, apart from the not wanting to show the aliens factor. Also, there are great parts that elaborate on the source material for 2001- Sentinel, c-chute and childhood's end? The chapter that has, IIRC, Poole getting seperated from Discovery in the pod, is fantastic and better than the Hal murder. It's a mixed bag, but I remember enjoying it more than the official stuff.

Where the hell is the "none of the above" option?

Let's just get this on the record --
I NEVER want the government to ever again spend as much as it has pre-sequester.
I NEVER want to fund Obamacare one bit, one dime, nor any enablers or administrators.
I NEVER want to reopen half the positions currently shut down -- and want the NPS dissolved into the acid of giving their parks to states in the process.
And I NEVER want this nation to owe as much money as it does today.

If you want to call this a compromise or a trade-off, you'll have to show that there's something I want involved....and I ain't heard it yet.

I checked notebook review for the steps and it says I have to load intel rapid something off the installation driver section

365 IMHO, Win 8 is mainly for tablet PCs. If you dont have that, then I wouldn't do it.

The Dude, may have good reasons, but I tried it for a year, and had nothing but problems. and NOT with the drivers, but with the Interface. Its not intuitive at all, and gets in the way of all the old things you may know from as far back as w95.. Now, that NOT to say I'm a "GET OFF MY LAWN" but it really was just a pain, and I'd rather wait for the next OS they make, and stick with w7 service pack 1 or2, or whatever it is now..

Good luck tho!

364  my Samsung is a win8 and I do miss the start button, took me forever to figure out the put the mouse to the side to get the menu

any little bump and a stupid app will open

I think with a clean install i'll have no apps bloating it

also, win8 has a built in trim support for dual ssd's in raid!!!

I know realistically it means nada except for benchmarks but thats why god gave us overclocking

377 Yeah, I have about 5TBs for storage already.. Still need to shrink it. Too much redundant, and don't need to get confused by the old projects..

I gotta take a 1.5TB, load it with everything, and take to a safety deposit box.

Then nuke the rest, and start over with the SSDs and like you said, old drives as mass storage.

When it comes to raid and new a OS, I always disable that stuff as I've always had weird problems pop up (never forget the headache of going from XP to W7)

I got a nice backend performance boost out of the deal. Haven't broken out the clock but it at least feels like a nice speed boost for general fuckery.

It was pretty faithful to the book, which was the objective. Keep in mind that the source material for 2001 wasn't even a novel, it was a short story called 'The Sentinel.' And it was pretty short as that sort of thing went, having little more than the premise that if aliens were keeping an automated eye on us the event that would draw their attention was getting to the Moon. That this would signal that we were perhaps capable of becoming something worth engaging in conversation. Or destroying. The motivation of the Brain Farmers changed over the course of the novels.

405 Ezra Klein's naivete reminds me of a disgusting thing I saw today at Costco. Apparently Chris Matthews has a book out called 'When Politics Worked.' It tries to claim that President Reagan and Tip O'Neill were the best of buds.

Nevermind that O'Neill repeatedly betrayed Reagan's trust and never hesitated to change the terms of an agreement after the fact. If, as O'Neill asserted, all politics is local, I have to wonder what kind of pesthole produced O'Neill.

Sure but if you're limited to speed of light, by the time you get the signal to come check these guys out, they should be getting to that by the time you respond. If such a thing as warp is even possible you'd probably not rely on probes monitoring life bearing planets for millions of years. You'd just make a circuit of the galaxy and see for yourself.

A distant link but I'm reminded of the story Stross did poking at Star Trek. An alien wipes out the away team and is shocked to learn that what was being sent down to the planet was the originals rather than duplicates generated by the Transporter (which is also the basis for the Replicator) who'd be reintegrated into the originals if they returned but otherwise considered expendable.

The Transporter was a quick excuse to speed up the storytelling and keep the budget under control. But it soon became a huge question as to why it used in such limited fashion. ST:TNG tried to acknowledge this by adding the Replicator application of the technology but the show bible had the excuse built in that there was something that couldn't be duplicated in a sentient being and thus Replicator clones would be DOA. So, souls officially exist in the Star Trek universe. They somehow are attached to your body but cannot be duplicated by a technology that can duplicate virtually anything else.

I find it interesting to run across Japanese fiction that's basically, "what if we would have won WWII?"     Like the one where Yamato survives assassination, steals US nuclear secrets and timetravels back in time to modernize Japan and win WWII...

Is there anything equivalent in US fiction?    Like what if we had successfully invaded Canadia in 1812?    Won Vietnam?   Nuked China to win the Korean War?

Yeah but if you remember the episode they did some gyrations to explain why this was possible and really avoided the whole issue of souls being irreproducible. Once they understood how Riker was instacloned it opened the door for legions of highly trained and experienced officers to man starships. Since presumably the data could be stored and replicated on demand, these officers would have a kind of immortality. Young people entering Star Fleet would face an utter lack of opportunity for advancement. Why bother when you have an endless supply of your best guys?

Then, of course, there is the question of why they didn't have an immense Replicator that could crank out all or most of a starship instantly. The Dominion War should have been either won almost immediately due to sheer weight of power on one side or involved a nearly infinite number of ships and crew.

Stephen Goldin took on some of these issues in 'The Eternity Brigade.' Spoiler: Near the end of the story, the protagonist discovers he is fighting on both sides of a battle.

466 The Civil War alternate histories sort of counts for what I'm thinking of, but not Watchmen - the premise of Watchmen isn't built around "what if we won that war we lost".   Winning Vietnam does happen, but it's more to show the result of having "real" superheroes in a society.

Basically I'm looking at fiction that tries to imagine away the shame of defeat.

There has been tons of that sort of thing. Harry Turtledove practically became a brand name in alternate history stories. And there have been several anthologies edited by Martin Greenberg.

One story that stuck with me is a world where the Nazis conquer the UK and have now arrived in India. Gandhi and Nehru discover that the tactics that worked on the Brits in our history don't mean much to the Nazis, as they were planning to kill most of the population anyway.

One of Turtledove big epic multi-volume tales kind of relates to what we talking about earlier. In the early days of WWII an alien fleet shows up to take over the planet. Their physiology makes suspended animation easy for them and they've built their Empire using sub-light travel and technology not much more advanced than the US used in the Gulf War. They've never needed anything better because they've never encountered another race remotely close to their tech level.

When the Lizards sent a scout craft to check out Earth a few centuries earlier they expected to find pretty much the same tech level when their occupation fleet arrived. Instead, they find a species that is only a little behind them in tech and capable of implementing new ideas far faster than them.

Wacky antics ensue.

The Dominion War should have been either won almost immediately due to sheer weight of power on one side or involved a nearly infinite number of ships and crew.

Didn't they touch on that in the hand waving over the self-replicating minefield placed around the wormhole in the middle of the war? I think there was some issue of available mass and complication, but it seemed more to me the writers wanted to assert that their fantasy tech could do X but no more (see also raging inconsistencies of Voyager),

Yeah, that's bothered me tech-wise - if you can move the person from point A to point B instantly as energy without simply plopping out a warm corpse onto the planet, then you know enough to replicate the person.  Heck, it was a plotpoint somewhere that they hid refuges in the transporter storage banks.

If you can store it, you can copy it.    If you're dematerializing and re-materializing a person 100% faithfully, that implies complete information on what you're sending.   And if information is incomplete such that you can't use it as a replicator... what parts are you losing after each transport?

It's not just the genre of alternate history, but stuff that's so contrived that it's practically wish-casting - just like bodice-rippers for romance novels, equivalent in alternate worlds/realities, specifically targeting defeats to transform them into fantasy victories.

Strangely - I'm instantly reminded of leftist fiction with "right wing fascist Sarah Palin regimes" - they *won* the elections, but they're imagining defeats.   Interesting.

They kept adding layer of bullshittium plating to maintain plot integrity. Later episodes implied that the irreproducible element of a sentient being somehow remains attached to the energy bundle that is converted back to the original object at the destination.

You might recall the episode where Barkley was seeing scary monsters while transporting. These turned out to be personnel whose disappearance the Enterprise was investigating. This had several disturbing items. First, Barkley seems to retain consciousness throughout the transport process. Second, while dematerialized, he perceives other humans in the same state as frightening floating worm monsters.

The transport is an infinitely expanding can of worms. It's best never opened because there will always be more worms to deal with.

Ha, I like it.   But then wouldn't the re-materialization count as a "read"?

If they had just used "worm hole opens and moves you as you are, original molecules", that might've been fine - but it's the explanation of buffers and transfer as energy that creates the can of worms (with more cans inside).

486 Think I'm in over my head

Cruise some vintage computing sites.  There was also a book written called "Build your own 386/386SX"

http://www.amazon.com/Build-Your-386Sx-Compatible-Bundle/dp/0830637508

That goes into most of the hardware issues involved.  You can probably find a used copy for a song at a used book store.

386/386DX = 32 bit memory bus
386SX = 16 bit memory bus

The 386SX is slower at equivalent clock speeds due to less memory bandwidth, but has an execution unit in the CPU identical to the faster 386DX, so it can run all the same code.  The SX has a physical limit of 16M memory though.  The DX (in theory) could handle 4G, although in practice, many motherboard and DMA implementations started to choke at 16/24/32M.

Remember - at the time, 16M was considered a very lavish amount of memory.  OS/2 Warp originally targeted 6M as a usable minimum on a 386

Almost as if deep down they know they got away with something.

A guilty conscience can cause all sorts of odd behavior. Like writing absurd stories to justify ones hidden crimes.

Good alternate history requires believability. The writer has to do good research and come up with a good reason why events were altered. Or find some strange historical facts and come up with the real story nobody knows. Tim Powers did that in several good novels.

Howard Waldrop is another good writer for alternate history tales. One story, 'Ike At The Mike,' is based on a comment Eisenhower once made about being at a crossroads in his life where he was torn between pursuing music or a military career. Also appearing in the story are US Senators William Henry Pratt and E. Aaron Presley.

496 @477

This is cribbing from something Ace wrote (and maybe zombie), but I think it's more that their winning the election was a "loss" for them of sorts - Leftism hasn't brought Utopia, and they haven't fixed the world as they thought they would.   So they come up with a fantasy universe where they're still fighting the Man (lefties always love being the underdog), who is as evil as they always claim us to be.  (even though it's a pathetic caricature)

And of course their Fighting for the People eventually results in the Victory that they're craving in real life.

But yeah, I don't expect good (believable) fiction in that corner of the alternate history genre; just looking at it from a safe distance for academic purposes.

533 In Ezra's frame of reference, the discord in Washington goes all the way back one whole presidency before his idol.  He's got his finger on the pulse of history, that man.

535 Racist dog shit dumped on American taxpayer lawns by Holder's Just Ice Dept. A recent investigation by Holder's US Department of Justice found that police dogs are not intimidated by politically correct policy. So the police dogs must be retrained, or what, retired, put down? Zero tolerance for effective job performance. Way to go, bozos. NOT "My dog ate the evidence" ... Police canines are trained to sniff out illegal substances and to respond threateningly [yet under command] to those who threaten their police handlers and themselves. As if yutes don't throw rocks at dogs, carry knifes or point loaded guns and shoot at law enforcement. Friday left-over headline: UK Independent [Brits don't say "Hispanics" -- how many Mexicans immigrate to Britain. eh? Cubans, Venezuelans, Brazilians? OK, Spaniards?] 'Racist' LA police dogs only bite African-Americans and Latinos Justice also found that in areas policed by the LASD, “African Americans, and to a lesser extent Latinos, are more likely to be stopped and/or searched than whites, even when controlling for factors other than race, such as crime rates.” The authors of the Parc report recommended that the LASD work on improving its canine-deployment policies, and keep track of the enforcement activities of individual dogs and their handlers.

537 Dear Ezra, I am old enough to remember Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan. By that calculus, you can probably figure out that I also remember Clinton, Bush Sr., and W.. In all those years, I never once considered that a trip to the DMV was anything more than a nightmare, and I don't see why you would be surprised that the Obamacare website would be any more efficient. That being said, I can not remember a government shutdown (I've lived through a few) where a president closed the Lincoln Memorial or put barricades up around the mall. I can't recall a president refusing to work out a deal with congressional leaders, and I can't not recall a president calling his political opponents terrorists or hostage-takers. I am a lot older than you, but since you are so smart and come from such a prestigious lineage, you should be able to look this crap up without being smacked on the back of the head by one of your elders (that would be me). So consider yourself smacked upside the head, kid, with a fine verbal backhand. Now go blow your nose, and go back to the kid table. Regards, Ms. Overdone

540 Ezra Klein, still suffers from acne and has just found out that magical thinking is typically not a developmental stage that extends into young adulthood.
