H.L. Mencken on Husbands and Bachelors
The average woman is not strategically capable of bringing down the most tempting game within her purview, and must thus content herself with a second, third, or nth choice. The only women who get their first choices are those who run in almost miraculous luck and those too stupid to formulate an ideal - two very small classes, it must be obvious. A few women, true enough, are so pertinacious that they prefer defeat to compromise. That is to say, they prefer to put off marriage indefinitely rather than to marry beneath the highest leap of their fancy. But such women may be quickly dismissed as abnormal, and perhaps as downright diseased in mind; the average woman is well aware that marriage is far better for her than celibacy, even when it falls a good deal short of her primary hopes... Thus the average woman is under none of the common masculine illusions about elective affinities, soul mates, love at first sight, and such phantasms. She is quite ready to fall in love, as the phrase is, with any man who is plainly eligible, and she usually knows a good many more such men than one. Her primary demand in marriage is not for the agonies of romance, but for comfort and security... One frequently hears of remarried widowers who continue to moon about their dead first wives, but for a remarried widow to show any such sentimentality would be a nine days' wonder. Once replaced, a dead husband is expunged from the minutes. And so is a dead love. One of the results of all this is a subtle reinforcement of the contempt with which women normally regard their husbands - a contempt grounded, as I have shown, upon a sense of intellectual superiority. To this primary sense of superiority is now added the disparagement of a concrete comparison, and over all is an ineradicable resentment of the fact that such a comparison has been necessary. In other words, the typical husband is a second-rater, and no one is better aware of it than his wife. He is, taking averages, one who has been loved, as the saying goes, by but one woman, and then only as a second, third or nth choice. If any other woman had ever loved him, as the idiom has it, she would have married him, and so made him ineligible for his present happiness. But the average bachelor is a man who has been loved, so to speak, by many women, and is the lost first choice of at least some of them. He represents the unattainable, and hence the admirable; the husband is the attained and disdained.
Here we have a sufficient explanation of the general superiority of bachelors, so often noted by students of mankind - a superiority so marked that it is difficult, in all history, to find six first-rate philosophers who were married men. The bachelor's very capacity to avoid marriage is no more than a proof of his relative freedom from the ordinary sentimentalism of his sex - in other words, of his greater approximation to the clearheadedness of the enemy sex. He is able to defeat the enterprise of women because he brings to the business an equipment almost comparable to their own. Herbert Spencer, until he was fifty, was ferociously harassed by women of all sorts. Among others, George Eliot tried very desperately to marry him. But after he had made it plain, over a long series of years, that he was prepared to resist marriage to the full extent of his military and naval power, the girls dropped off one by one, and so his last decades were full of peace and he got a great deal of very important work done.
But no fortress can stand forever and just five years after writing this Mencken was smitten by a young Sara Haardt, the future Mrs. Mencken.
Here are some baby meerkats. Knock yourselves out.

Mencken?? I know he was a great writer, but from everything I've seen and read about him, he was pretty much sour, snide and sarcastic just for the sake of being sour, snide and sarcastic. Also, did he ever criticize *himself*?? This BTW is the same reason I stopped being much interested in Pink Floyd: under the leadership of Roger Waters, the entire message of the band is/was apparently "everything in the whole entire world sucks donkey balls, except us."
Also BTW, and I know I'll get pummeled here for saying it, but I kinda sorta feel the same way about Mark Steyn these days. From what I've heard, he's completely devoid of hope for Western Civilization, and I'm sorry but that's no fun for me to read.

OSP hates it, Peaches is ambivalent, but personally, I like the look of the newest 'Vette...from the side. The angular lines that only show up when the car is viewed from front or rear don't get me excited. That said, I dig it on the whole. It's fast as hell, huge displacement, manual transmission, and serves no practical purpose. Yes, it has EFI and cats, but it's as close as we're getting to a real muscle car anymore, if only because they don't offer a 6-cyl option.

Frustrates the hell out of my wife when, the handful of times we've had a 'fight,' that I simply don't play--I just shrug and walk away.
I grew up with four sisters. Trying to 'win an argument' with a woman (on anything that's obviously activated her emotional centers, anyway) is like spitting into a hurricane. Even if you 'win' you will have lost. Only rational strategy, a la the '80's movie 'War Games' is not to play.

Like the Alaskan crabber that couldn't go crabbing because the permit issuing feds were shutdown. It wasn't that he didn't know how to crab, didn't have a safe and proper vessel, didn't know where to crab, didn't know how to preserve his catch and deliver safe food to market, it was because some paper-pushing bureaucrat asshole was "unavailable" to push some kcufing paper his way, and because of that he was afraid to pursue his craft because of the future potential malevolent vindictive actions all too sure to come from a tyrannical government once it got back in business.

Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk said that the fire that broke out in the new electric car from a YouTube video that was posted last week spread because firfighters punctured a hole in a metal firewall.
A statement from Musk explained the following:
When the fire department arrived, they observed standard procedure, which was to gain access to the source of the fire by puncturing holes in the top of the batteryÂ’s protective metal plate and applying water. For the Model S lithium-ion battery, it was correct to apply water (vs. dry chemical extinguisher), but not to puncture the metal firewall, as the newly created holes allowed the flames to then vent upwards into the front trunk section of the Model S. Nonetheless, a combination of water followed by dry chemical extinguisher quickly brought the fire to an end.
-----
So, what they are saying is, carry a manual for EVERY "Green" car you find on fire. Take time to look up the model #, and by the time you review the proper way to extenguish the fire. Its burned down to the ground anyway..
Ok, Good to know!

It's a Ferrari 550 with angles and the tail off a Camaro.
It is better than the last one but not that exciting. Mind you, ends are hard - in writing, films, and cars. So no shame in not thrilling.
Ultimately it will come down to build quality and handling. I doubt I will drive one for a while, so I'll have to see later. Posted by: Merovign , Dark Lord of the Sith at October 15, 2013 10:26 PM
The front end of a Viper, the side profile of a Ferrari 550, the rear of a Camaro. Kind of like the designers rummaged through the parts bin and mocked up a body
The chassis and suspension are much improved though, and the interior finally looks better than something from a rental fleet
The 63 might keep up in a straight line drag race, but forget a road race. The old Sting Rays were notorious for oversteer

I can understand their cool factor, at least. I live 3 miles from Nissan USA's new HQ just a piece down the interstate from Nashvegas, and there are a handful of Leafs (Leaves?) on the roads due to their VERY generous lease program on those cars. If any of you know about the topography of TN, you know how rotten that is. There's not a flat spot once you get 10 miles from Nashville, and following *those people* up an almost-mountain is infuriating. If I win the Powerball big-time, my daily driver will be an Apache. This country has had several mass population migrations in the past.
After the revolution, loyalists were driven out over the span of about 10 years and moved to Canada, various Caribbean islands, etc.
After losing the civil war the south had a massive influx of carpet baggers looking to feast on reconstruction booty.
During the depression and WWII there was a massive migration from rural to urban areas.
And of course all the forced Indian relocation onto reservations and such.
Encouraged/forced relocation may seem unthinkable, but its happened in the past quite a bit as the aftermath of conflict.

Missed out on the earlier topical threads, so just gonna dump some observations here.
Those of a certain vintage will recall how, in 1979 (1980? see, I've already stumbled - but it's one or the other) Jimmy Carter's last/penultimate budget was "rejected" by the bond market. Yes, folks, back then, we actually had a bond market. That was willing/able to act rationally, like a market, and reject crap when it saw it. And not just front-run or react to the Fed.
The Carter deficit projection - even if low-balled as you'd expect - was simply unacceptable. And we're talking, probably, when adjusted for inflation, probably one month's deficit here, at most, maybe less. And a much, much lower % of the GDP than today's deficit represents - and of course the national debt burden was a fraction of today's.
A few phone calls between the Treasury Sec., the Fed chairman, and the primary dealers (the firms that buy/re-sell govt. paper), and presto - budget withdrawn. I know - impossible to imagine a world in which there were real markets, acting as real constraints on govt. incompetence - hell, even a Dem party that was in some substantial way American.

Tesla Motors shares have fallen 10 percent since the release of a YouTube video that showed the Model S on fire in a town near Seattle.
Multiple news outlets are reporting that the cause of the fire started in the battery pack. A statement from Tesla said that the $70,000 car collided with a large metallic object in the middle of the road, causing significant damage to the vehicle.
“Automatic alerts warned the driver to pull over,” the statement
said, “and the fire began only after the driver was out of the vehicle.
The fire eventually consumed much of the vehicle’s front end.”
---
So, the driver is an idiot for hitting whatever is in the road. Or, the tesla is so fragile what he was used to hitting in his Civic and brushing off, now destroys $70k and change!!

So in the car on the way to the gym, Hewitt is talking to Goldberg, and one of the most jaw-droppingly stupid exchanges (to include the limp guests Hugh had in the studio who were participating) so far, from "conservative" pundits, transpires.
Most idiotic part was the broad agreement that the difference between, say, Cruz and Cornyn (Corker?) was a disagreement on tactics. Not substance. Ya know, McCain, Graham, Collins, Murkowski, Chmn Rogers of House Approps - they're all on the same page as a Cruz/Lee/McClintock - just trivial tactical differences.
I was shocked, more than 20 years ago, when a US Senator asked me to comment on an op-ed column and send it to him. I couldn't believe a senator actually read that shit - which I hadn't read since college (in general - and this was before the advent of almost uniformly clueless lightweights on the "prestigious" op-ed pages, as we have today). One absolutely unfixable problem - to go along with the others that have brought us to this pathetic and disastrous state - is that we have a pretty mediocre "conservative" pundit class. Mediocre, or worse. As evidenced by the jaw-droppingly hallucinogenic friendly little agreement-fest between Hewitt, Goldberg, and the others. Very unimpressive.

Mike Hammer, the Miura faithfully transmits the road conditions to your kidneys. Alas your kidneys are no longer as young as they used to be.
Tesla cars make news because they are expensive exotics. No one even blinks when an Impala catches fire. But Tesla did themselves no favours over the bricking issue instead of just sucking up the charge to avoid bad PR, they charged their monied idiot buyers full cost to replace the dead battery packs. And this battery pack and its bricking issue is in the more 'affordable' S like the one that caught fire. And what kind of protective engineering has Tesla done to protect the cables? Sounds like slim to none which is a shame considering the price tag.

May I venture an opinion, gents?
It means " I don't know". As in "I don't know if I can trust you the way you want me to and that's not your fault, I want to trust you but I've been jacked up in the past and I find it very difficult to believe you are not going to hurt me too. Please understand this is NOT your fault, but when you ask me this question I know it IS my problem and I don't really want to punish you and hurt you but I really like being with you and......... I just don't know."

Mustangs were not good handlers, but once you put in the two under-hood braces and the subframe connectors that should have been stock, if you stayed with the six or the small block you'd have a pretty potent car. They weren't up to lugging the 390 around. It caved them in.
Apples to apples, a new 1960's five-passenger US car vs any new five-passenger Italian, German or British car made you wonder what all the snobbery was about. But of course there is the Citroen. May we.

Some say the tolerances are not great and they work fine if you design around measured specs. Kind of not the point however.
When it's listed as a drop in replacement I'm not expecting to design around the specs. When it's DOA, there's nothing to design around.
I'm not trying to bust your balls, Merovign, I'm grateful that anyone answered. Just frustrated that I had to burn through three new transistors to get one that worked.
Guess I'll try ECG parts next time, I had good luck with that stuff *mumble* years ago.
'Course, that was when I could head over to the local electronics store, because it existed.

Alternative hypothesis: the driver was an idiot for driving a Tesla. Sometimes you can't avoid running over debris on the road; it may fall off the vehicle ahead of you, leaving you no time to evade, or you may be boxed in, and have no avenue to evade.

I mean, even if it's fun, why make something like a USB-TTL adapter when you can buy it on eBay for $15?
I'm sure there are still some high quality component makers out there.

The 2SC1419 went out of production a few years ago as best I can tell.

Hello all. Listening to Brian Eno's instrumental/ambient work and reading caselaw. And commenting on the moronblog (mostly in the Warden thread above). Wish BCochran didn't have the hate-on for me that he apparently does, 'cuz I like his twitter feed. Oh well.
Still think he would extremely pleasantly surprised at what I would do as a guest-blogger, though. I suppose he think I'd be writing TruCon-bashing stuff or whatever. Not a chance. I'd either music-blog, or go to town on liberal idiocy in the finest tradition of the Moronblog. It would the douchiest thing in the world to take a privilege like that and use it to troll people.

Counterfeiting rare'ish pennies is safer and a lot less equipement intensive.
If you don't get greedy and do shit like 1909s pennies, and keep it to things in the kinda-rare $20 range you could get away with it forever.
