Prayers for Luke and Annie. Luke has been an associate pastor at our church for about a year. Annie became pregnant after they were here for a few months. The anticipated delivery date was Oct. 25th. Today she grew concerned that she had not felt the baby move, so they hurried off to the hospital, learned that the baby ( a girl,and already named Gwyneth) had died.

Before everyone has a freakout over this if you read the bill carefully, the debt ceiling elimination is a temporary thing that expires on Feb. 7, 2014 at which point the existing debt ceiling comes back in force.

In 2008, I became enthusiastic about the GOP as being a party that could put Sarah Palin on the ticket and fight the irrational Dems that were collapsing into Progressivism. By the time I was ready to pull the plug on being Libertarian, I was unwilling to touch anything (like registration) that might queer my vote, but I changed to GOP in 2009 thinking that it'd be nice to have some impact in primaries and actually have some real say in the governance of the country. I also supported various [tea-party-ish] GOP candidates and actually walked my precinct hanging door-tags.
Since then, I have received hundreds of mailings begging for more money -- to the point where I'd guess they exceeded my contributions. Mind you, nobody emailed [cheap] me back to say that my contribution had done any good.....they just took my $10 and sent me 34 letters (at 40 cents each) asking for more. They didn't convert any Dems, they didn't sign-on any Independents, they didn't get anyone elected....they just carped at me for more.
And the GOP establishment hasn't missed an opportunity to shit on Tea Partiers during the ensuing years. I don't necessarily disagree with Ace when he says that getting shivved in the back wasn't the reason the Tea Partiers lost....but it sure didn't help.
To add insult to injury, this bunch of collaborators have advanced the cause of Statism at every turn, while mincing and prancing about how they were as pure as the driven snow. I'll say it now, and say it plainly: Bullshit. All Boehner had to do was fund what was needed and adjourn. Left town, left the rest of the DC echo chamber to argue with themselves or die trying. Disappeared. Instead, he agreed with all the media/Statist talking points on the record -- and in the face of total stonewalling, argued with himself and his own caucus until he was bent over, strapped down, and lubed up. Better that he had spent the entire shutdown in the hospital unable to speak or write than the thrashing and capitulation that ensued.
So, now I'm done with the GOP. I'm unsure as to whether to register Dem in hopes of fucking up their primaries, going Independent because both parties repulse me, or staying Repub in order to bleed out their resources....but as far as me going "rah" when someone says "I'm with the GOP"? Fuck 'em sideways with a pineapple.

The primary reason for focusing on the debt ceiling was to force both sides to come to the table. McConnell actually managed to get that concession. Now the Republicans have to try to get something out of it.

House Republicans were able to force Senate Democrats to pass one this year but a conference was not convened because the Senate Ds refused to agree to the framework outlined by the House Rs. Historically, the debt limit debate has forced both sides to come to the table but talks might stall over the same issues that have been preventing progress on this front.

It won't take off, I'm sure. The Gen Y yuppies will buy organic veggies and stuff like that, but wash out a reusable sanitary napkin - no way.

This may sound ridiculous but in the light of the fact that both parties and the Tea Party in particular has had trouble getting the apolitical to rally, there is a powerful lesson here. Whether it's to 'gamify' the donation and results or just to f'ing communicate via something invented after 1990, both parties are leaving money on the table.

Not fast enough, but....oddly....making progress.
The bizarre thing is that it's all in a weird Kabuki zone where nothing means what it seems. The biggest snag is getting the BH to buy-in....to get this, I must have a comprehensive plan....which, of course, would be different based on whichever economic zone we go to....the selection of which would require buy-in....which needs a plan....
In the meantime, she's oscillating about her job....which requires that we drop everything and do stuff....which perpetuates her job's ability to make her oscillate.
Through the self-referential chaos, there are some shining paths. I'm making progress on streamlining my weight, my lifestyle, my data, and my possessions. I'm making progress on illustrating the hope in reality/red states v. the hopelessness in overdetermined failure/blue areas. This little jaunt to Oregon was very helpful -- there was a freeway overpass demo with "impeach Obama" and multiple farmland signs asking, "What happened to our Constitution?" -- not to mention the State of Jefferson along the way.
If I were single, I'd be a homeowner in Eastern Tennessee already -- and I wouldn't be filing a CA return in 2014 [and might not for 2013]....but I'm half of a couple. Every day here is another day knowing a disaster will strike -- but if I can't get the BH out in time, what would I do without her? So I stay on the railroad tracks, trying to tug her free, when she's not sure there is a problem....

Plus when systems run out of money, they don't burn - they just degrade. Look at Argentina who has defaulted several times or Russia right after the fall of the Soviet Union.So long as there is enough human capital and natural resources people will create ad hoc workaround systems.

Loaded question, but I will answer it anyway. The measure passed tonight is a CR/DL deal. This particular project was formally recommended to Congress in 1987, the funding was authorized in 1988, and it looks like the funding has been appropriated since 1991. So what they did tonight was authorize funding that they were going to authorize anyway. That said, I am not convinced that the project deserves the money.

If we want real appropriations reform, at least two things need to happen- (1) congressional conservatives must be willing to serve on Appropriations and (2) the entire process must be over hauled. The latter would be much easier if we started with committee reform (the entire committee system).

This is exactly what Jeff Flake did in Congress. Took the Appropriations Committee job as an anti-pork conservative, and waged a long, slow, epic battle against earmarking that eventually won when the GOP regained the House in 2010. And now, the House GOP doesn't earmark -- at all.
It was a shit job, but he accomplished something major with it.

Maet I think the Tea Party and Scott Walker may well end up as speed bumps and footnotes - but my crystal ball also does not contain any spectacular or kinetic melt-downs. Remember the sheer inertia of the US economy, the wealth that has been created (by a system now being systematically strangled), the vestigial/inertial levels of order, control, etc.
I think CA is a fairly good model to use. The place has been turned from the most dynamic and important economic/social engine of innovation on Earth into an insolvent, poorly and nastily run place with cooked books and lawlessness reaching histrionic proportions (the full usual menu re illegals including drivers' licenses, but now a ridiculous minimum wage and "gender optional" rules for school kids).
But no collapse. Too much good stuff that is mostly inertia - or favored sector. IT and biotech and fake, er "green" energy are favored areas of enterprise, and thus not persecuted or strangled (forestry, much commercial fishing, mining/real energy, small manufacturing, large manufacturing, certain forms of agriculture). They are profitable enough to provide some revenue; the "entertainment" sector provides some, and the "climate and beauty tax" on the prosperous who choose to live her to enjoy the spectacular natural attractions provides some more.
So no collapse. Just a grinding, inexorable decline in many respects. A hollowed out social structure with idiotic "educated" Coastal Clueless libs at the top (favored sectors, or members of the unbelievably pampered over-paid nomenklatura, which now includes not just teachers/professors and bureaucrats but even law enforcement/emergency types). In the middle - not much, a rapidly disappearing small ag and manufacturing sector. At the (explosively growing) bottom: illegals, non-assimilating Hispanic immigrants, a debilitated hard-core urban underclass to rival anything in the east or upper Midwest).
Just as the EU and really the US have been, for some time, insolvent - yet in a position to magically cook the books and print money to avoid collapse - CA has done so (no need to print money when you can violate the state const. at will, cook the books, stiff creditors, game the future liability calculations, etc.). No collapse.

Well I don't have access to much beyond grocery store options. First time using them. I didn't count how many I put in, but with them and the whole red pepper, and nearly liquifying them before adding, definitely gave a good amount of heat to give me a bit of a sweat.

I completely oppose Amnesty, but it's a consequence-free vote in a state that is becoming increasingly Latino since the House is never going to move on the bill. (No, not a chance, especially not after this debacle.) I hold Flake's libertarian-based immigration position against him, but the fact is I won't forget the way he fought the good fight in the House for earmark reform, particularly because it required him to do a job that almost no conservatives want to do, which is actually dirty their hands with Appropriations (it used to be THE plum assignment! Now it's a badge of shame!).

Not hardly. Boehner specifically went to the House conference meeting this morning and asked permission from the entire GOP caucus to bring this bill to the floor despite not having a majority of GOP votes, and they granted it to him without objection. Not one member objected. They wanted this thing to pass, and this whole crisis to end. If they had actually been opposed to the bill reaching the floor (because not enough Republicans supported it) they would have raised hell and instead of seeing Jim Jordan and Raul Labrador coming out and saying "Boehner's hold on the job is rock-solid, we're happy as can be with him" you'd be hearing rumblings from them about a change in leadership.
None of this would ever happen if Boehner tried to bring an immigration bill to the floor without a majority of GOP backing. There would be a riot in the caucus, everyone in the leadership would lose their heads, it would be chaos. Nothing like tonight.
There will be no real Amnesty bill coming out of the GOP House. There may yet be some eyewash 'fake' bill (you know, "increased border security," etc.) but not a path to citizenship. And probably not anything at all.

I tossed all my CS because they were mostly ads for things I wasn't going to buy. It was well-and-good to know that a 486 box with certain add-ons was $892 in 1991....but that was scarcely relevant in 2007 (when I was chuckin' 'em). There is a USPS standard of content/ads that they use to determine postage rates, and CS hugged that line tighter than a boa "hugs" a mouse.

It won't be this not because everyone in the GOP caucus are virtuous angels whom we can trust, but rather because the outcry will be not just from the Tea Party types (who are ultimately only 20% of the Republican Party), but from EVERYONE IN THE PARTY. Sure, a difference. But how much of a difference? Perhaps not correct, but a viewpoint that is not implausible, much less crazy. Medicare Part D is a far cry from Obamacare - but it's possibly just AS distant from the reform and retrenchment that were called for when it was crammed through instead. (hmm - perhaps not a good example of my point, as I recall the Bush WH push for Part D was the ugliest of anything done in the two terms, and the House GOP was very cold to the whole thing).

As you might have noticed, the base can command the House GOP to do totally crazy-stupid things, like shutting down the federal government with no plan and no achievable goals in mind, and they will do it. If the GOP was THAT responsive to pressure from Ted Cruz, a couple of political action shops, and the roars of the base, how do you think they're going to react to pressure exerted by all of those PLUS the rest of the GOP voter cohort as well?

The Senate GOP could be cajoled into giving up some votes for an immigration bill, both because they're insulated from immediate voter feedback and because they knew it was never going to pass the House anyway. (And honestly I don't think you could get as many votes from the Senate now anyway.)
The House GOP is a completely different beast.
Look, ask yourself: why on earth would Boehner want to grant Obama a big win by passing an amnesty bill that would make him look great and destroy the Republican Party? Just stumbled across this. You know what those festering pustules McConnel and Boehner snuck in this deal or let be snuck in: A negative debt ceiling provision. This requires the Congress to deny the next debt ceiling increase, rather than approve it. Thus, Barky can raise it $10 trillion (don't know if there's a limit or not) and the Congress has to vote *against it*, which Barky can the veto, thus requiring a 2/3 vote to stop it.
This will allow the festering pustule Repubs to tell us they voted against the next one, while ensuring it will go through. I'm not sure but I think this negative provision only applies to the next debt celing rise, not in perpetuity.
It's time for a third party revolution. Fuck them all. In the ass. With a chainsaw. Sideways.

That's a trope you have failed to examine. "Big money donors" are only worth something if you can retain your job. There's a reason why Boehner's job as Speaker isn't being threatened after the shutdown -- it's because the hardcore conservatives, the true Tea Party guys, actually feel like he was in their corner, fought the best he could, and had their backs. If I tell you that I'll give you $1,000,000 if you commit suicide, your response is going to be "um, it's not much use to me when I'm dead." That's the same response Boehner would have here: he's not going to be persuaded by "big money interests" to do something that would end his career and destroy the Republican Party and give control back to the Democrats, not because some faceless GOP donor moneybags said "we want amnesty."
That's not how politics works. Or real life for that matter. It's a weird fantasy-world funhouse version of how people think backroom 'corrupt' politics works.
Again, if you want to know what's going to happen in the House, it's not hard to figure out: just understand the correlation of forces and electoral incentives.

And actually, from first-hand experience I know that the better sort of incumbents (OK, that's a select group) do in fact make the right call, even when it doesn't help them personally. At least a few used to, when I was in the middle of the process a few years back. Yes mostly it was predictable non-risky behavior - but not always.
Aside from this, there are the crucial borderline cases where risk-taking and leadership can change outcomes. Not frequent, but real. In those cases the fairly desolate short-term self-interest calculus usually defended as "normal" or even noble is the wrong call. And on big matters yes, I absolutely expect the incumbent to risk jumping on the grenade. He's not selling cars or writing code or shuffling papers for a court, he's taken an oath and received both privileges and responsibilities. Nursing some sort of faux-pragmatic respect for those who fail the country and their constituents on huge questions in order to keep their positions is one key ingredient to ....... what we have today.

It may well have happened. It probably didn't even need to happen, since immigration reform was already 'off the table' long before the shutdown battle came up and nothing whatsoever has changed in the interim to make it more likely. No, as I read it it's a one-time only exception to the usual debt ceiling rule and expires Feb 7, 2014. Plus the agreement only authorizes the treasury to issue additional debt as they need to in order to meet current obligations.

Wrong. I've read the legislation carefully. This only applies to the CURRENT debt ceiling increase, the one that would carry us to February 7th, 2014. After that point (i.e. when February rolls around and we need to raise it AGAIN), it's back to the old rules. In other words, this is just a fancy way for Obama to get his temporary debt ceiling increase bridging October to February whilst allowing a number of House GOP members to vote no. Then it's back to the drawing board all over again in February.
