NPS Director: Terrorism Made Us Shut Down the Parks
The National Park Service director told Congress on Wednesday that he had to shut down the open-air memorials on the Mall during the government shutdown because of terrorism, saying that closing them was the only way to protect them "in a post-9/11 world."
Director Jonathan B. Jarvis also said his agency had received intelligence showing an increased threat of danger since the shutdown began - though he would not tell two House committees what those warnings were.
Apparently that threat included domestic terrorists such as these members of the WWII Veterans Front.

"If you attempted to reduce liberal technocracy to its Platonic essence, then transferred that essence into a carbon-based life form, you'd have Ezra Klein."
- Troy Senik, Ricochet.com, "'Ezra Klein: Obamacare Rollout a 'Disaster,'" yesterday.
MoveOn.org Petition Calls For Arrest Of Republican Leaders For Sedition
One outlet for that fury is a petition from the progressive MoveOn.org that calls for the U.S. Department of Justice to arrest and try Republican leaders, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (Va.) and House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio), for "the crime of seditious conspiracy against the United States of America."
The petition argues that "the House GOP leadership's use of the Hastert Rule and H. Res 368 to shut down the government and threaten the US economy with default is an attempt to extort the United States government into altering or abolishing the Affordable Care Act, and thus, is self-evidently a seditious conspiracy." (The U.S. Code defines "seditious conspiracy" in part as any conspiracy "to oppose by force the authority [of the U.S. government], or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States." )
Well good luck with that. Of course if sedition laws were still enforced, most of the Democratic leadership would have end up in jail during Bush's presidency.

Swiss To Vote on $33,600 Guaranteed Income for Every Adult
Switzerland will hold a vote on whether to introduce a basic income for all adults, in a further sign of growing public activism over pay inequality since the financial crisis.A grassroots committee is calling for all adults in Switzerland to receive an unconditional income of 2,500 Swiss francs ($2,800) per month from the state, with the aim of providing a financial safety net for the population.
Organizers submitted more than the 100,000 signatures needed to call a referendum on Friday and tipped a truckload of 8 million five-rappen coins outside the parliament building in Berne, one for each person living in Switzerland.
Which means a married couple is guaranteed $67,000 for doing nothing. I'm guessing the Swiss are far too sensible to turn their country into a bankrupt nation of loafers.
Life Lessons from Shelby Herring
Since everyone seems to get their own reality shows these days, why not give one to UMiss senior Shelby Herring? She's definitely got enough material for a few episodes and I suspect they could pay her in vodka and concert tickets.
Daryl Hannah Comes Out of the Autism Closet
Daryl Hannah has revealed that she was diagnosed with Autism as a child and struggled 'debilitating shyness' as a result of the disorder. Now 52, Hannah - who reached the very peak of her profession through roles in smash hits like Splash, Blade Runner, Wall Street and Steel Magnolias - is able to quietly manage her symptoms.
But as she rose through the Hollywood hierarchy it was a different story altogether.
'I've never been comfortable being the center of attention,' the stunning blonde - who dated John Kennedy Jnr. - star told People.

The Chicago reared beauty said at times her shyness would become so overwhelming that she would rock back and forward constantly.

Uh huh. Follow-up question: define "terrorist"?
Because DHS, the DoD, and other federal agencies have been busy redefining who is a threat (hint: they're US citizens and they don't practice the "religion of peace").

because terrorists won't climb over barricades to commit acts of terrorism? What sort of lazy damn terrorists are they recruiting these days?
Or, is he saying that the presence of a brown shirt NPS guy by the memorial would in some way deter the terrorist and if those guys aren't there, then a terrorist that wouldn't ordinarily think of committing an act of terrorism there would be enticed into it? "the memorial was wearing a short skirt, it was just asking for it"?

Insurance in California will be required to pay for it because they couple are deemed "infertile" despite the fact that they aren't ever engaging in a reproductive sex act, or that both of them may in fact be clinically fertile.

Posted by: eman at October 17, 2013 11:09 PM (AO9UG)
If it pays for things that are optional, it's not "insurance" -- it's "cost-shifting". For instance, if a plan paid for earrings for anyone with pierced ears, it wouldn't be insurance against open pierced holes -- you have the choice to pierce or not pierce -- it would be cost-shifting because when you pierced you'd be forcing others to pay for what would ordinarily be your problem.
Absent rape -- and I could support the use of insurance in such cases -- contraception is needed because of your choice to become sexually active. Pregnancy care is needed because of a choice to engage in activities leading to pregnancy.
Whenever you have cost-shifting based on the decisions of the one making the choice, you have a moral hazard and are going to engender strong resentments among those who are paying for choices they did not make.

Peaches - I'm very sorry about your cousin. I've heard of 2 people this week, both in their 50's, who died of pancreatic cancer - one of the nastiest kinds you can get. That's just way too young (of course, I say that because I'm in my 50's)
One of the signs of pancreatic cancer is persistent backache, I was told. Now I'm paranoid because I get backaches all the time.

A conservative doctor at work stopped in my office today to vent about the spineless GOP. I asked him if he knew of doctors who were thinking of retiring because of Obamacare. He said, "That's practically the only thing we talk about in the doctor's lounge." He is 55 and had wanted to practice until he was 70 if he was able to - he loves being a doctor. Now he wants to retire. He's thinking about Costa Rica. I don't blame him.

Back in 1990 a 1/1 scale resin kit was available from Japan. I merely built a kit and painted it. Have had it a long time. Laying on a shelf. Decided to stain a $2.39 wooden plaque from Hobby Lobby. Then drilled a hole in the plaque to accept the metal badge, which is another item from Japan I have. And put it all together.

Another annoying consequence of leftist obfuscation. Insurance != care != welfare.
They like to talk about the healthy paying for the sick as if that's insurance - but it's not. Insurance is based on paying more than your expected value in healthcare costs (chance of getting sick * cost of treating sickness); by making the same gamble with large numbers of people, the insurance company will on average make money, even as large numbers of people overpay for healthcare while mitigating the risk of expensive treatment they can't pay for.
It's basically gambling against yourself, with a payout when you get sick.

Wow! Growing up like that was special to me. Listening to the AM radio broadcasters is still special to me. There's a Theater of the Mind that comes alive when certain voices grace those airwaves.
When certain commentators find my radio with their verbal paintings, I soooo appreciate the art.
In particular, when Vin Scully does the World Series? You can smell the fresh-cut grass.. His voice pours down the dial like sweet maple syrup over perfectly stacked pancakes.
The "craft" is being lost. Television commentators are more about multiple "catch-phrases", all-the-while defiling the English Language.
The art is becoming a form of self-aggrandizing advertisement through "*BOOM* Commentary".
I'm a "black & white, AM radio" guy in an era of "Explosive HD!!!elevent!y!."

I'm less familiar with football broadcasters than baseball, but I would know it as soon as I hear it. I still remember when HBO had Len Dawson and Nick Buonocotti doing "Inside the NFL."
After John Facenda died, the Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster did the "voice-over". -Damn me- for forgetting his name, but he was pure excellence.

Instead of concentrating on getting just one version into service, the test establishment kept chasing future development rabbits. Thus diluting the whole effort. That 40 something got built is amazing. The same thing happened with the Me-262 project, on top of fickle jet engines Rechlin frittered away planes on odd range finding gear, aerial torpedoes, one was flown with a cut down vertical tail, Hs 298 and Ruhrstahl X-4 air to air missiles were tested, and then there was V186 the Me-262 C-1a prototype that fitted with a Walter liquid fueled rocket motor mounted in the tail that resulted in a shortened rudder.
Jinx, if you want to flummox the museum people on the Do-335 on display. Here is a question to ask. Notice on the tail is painted a white 102. This means it should be the second of the 10 A-0 pre-production aircraft. Some sources say the radio letters painted in black on the side belong to 101. A-02 102's radio letters should be VC + PH according to these same sources. Or just skip it since Dornier applied VG + PH on the plane when they restored it.

At the end of any given night, the hardest thing I have to do is pray for my "adversaries".
After sating my hunger for progressive beat-downs, I know in my heart that I have to pray for my so-called "enemies".
Most nights, I "go through the motions" and ask that they gain a greater vision. Some nights, I sincerely ask God to forgive me for my artery-throbbing vitriol. I need to be absolved for asking why Hillary Clinton shouldn't be hung by the neck until dead.
"Bush Derangement Syndrome" has extended to an otherwise even-keeled individual --who lives somewhere else. I have rarely been even-keeled. I don't want to become "deranged", so I try to leave my SCoaMF Vitriol aside, as I pray for those with whom I disagree vehemently. I also leave Anti-"RINO"-Commentary to the rest of the horde.
I'll not forget who shot within the tent first, but I'll be damned if I take more than one pot-shot per month against our resident "moderates".
I feel I can be absolved for my disparaging commentary should I have Truth and Liberty behind my explosive pork-scratchings. Righteous Indignation is a fine line, should one use it incorrectly.
I post sparingly, seeing as my One True Value is Freedom through the Free Market, Under God with Liberty for All.
I Love my Family. I Love my God. I Love my Country.
Perhaps this is my "advertisement" Ace posted about previously. Maybe I'm "advertising" self before Truth. I'd like to think that this is the truth, but it changes day-to-day. Month-to-month. Year-to-year.
I don't believe in "Personal Truth". That's "Guru-Bullshit" for motivational speakers. I believe in God, Family, Friendship, Truth, Honor and Smaller Government through the Constitution.
...this is a time of restoration. May God grant me the patience. Again.

The cables would be an unlikely source for the problem, but the monitor would be another oddity. I'd blame the monitor if your drivers have been updated.
If all else fails, your port may be the problem. Check behind the port and all its connections before dousing lighter-fluid on it and having a cookout.

So as far as I can tell looking over the 'help' threads, there is some kind of major incompatibility between the current versions of adobe flash and firefox, and the sense of commenters is that neither company is interested in addressing the issue. And adobe was apparently hacked recently which may or may not have anything to do with the problem.
And a lot of people think they are being helpful by posting links to the same fixes that are found in the base article over at firefox help, which don't work.
No video for me I guess. I just hope that Obama vid ace left at the top of an article the other day falls off the main page quickly.

Posted by: Võ Nguyên Giáp at October 17, 2013 11:01 PM (AWwDY)
Again.

Slappy, you really could be ordained -- you've got the calling. When all of us are feeling torn, wishing to help but uncertain of how....you have a prayer -- in just the right words. When we're feeling all stirred-up and vaguely homicidal....you have a Christian wish for our enemies to gain wisdom.
You're a better man than I, and you help me to better myself through your example.....though I may not live up to it all that regularly.

I feed the Fender on Les Paul custom shop. Crackheads stole my 61 SG four years ago and I went to Memphis for consolation.

Oh wow. Texas, then road trip to cali and off to Bangkok. It's a driller's life, I guess. How long will you be hanging in WA? Ah, a Les Paul through the twin. That sounds perfect for that amp. Your 61 SG got nicked???? Fuck. That would have been a hell of a guitar. I like SG's. They partner up with tele's like a kickass bitch. Did you buy something in Memphis? The LP custom?

I remember SG's being popular back in the late '60's to early '70's. Clapton had one, sold it to Todd Rundgren, got it stolen, and had a reproduction made.
I was told that it was a good substitute for a Les Paul. Since I play bass, I'll just take his word for it.
My first bass was a Gibson Ripper. I had it on loan until my PBass came in. Had a big fat neck on it. My P had a narrow maple neck, which suited my small hands much better. Damn, I wish I had that one back.

335? Nice. Played in a couple of bands with guys who played them. Gotta guard them carefully. They are prone to be nicked. Do some open tuned stuff myself. I prefer it. Great for slide.

The Super Twin ownership is confirmed. I got it from Larry Gann who played with Ted in his little goof-off band. He said Muddy Waters had been hooked through it one night so that's cool too.

BB, speaking of old gear, I have a 1950 Gibson 17 watt amp that I mike through the board and play harp. It was originally sold packaged with a lap steel.
Most harp players I know do something similar, get an old amp with only a few watts and crank it up. Sounds sweet.

BB, you want to knock birds off the high line with that setup.
Which I did for many years. Had to sell that rig, though. Now, if I ever become gainfully employed again, I'll be looking into a much smaller cabinet. I have an old Fender combo amp, 300 watts with one 15 now, but damn that thing's heavy. I put an SVT speaker in it, which added about 25 lbs to it. You only get one sound out of a Fender bass amp, but it's the right one.
Roland makes a Cube line of bass amps now, the biggest one is 120 watts, one 12 and a tweeter with lots of goodies built in, like an amp emulator, a tuner and a line out. Only weighs 43 lbs.

"ObamaCare Website Wasn't Tested Until a Week Before Deployment"
I've been working a very loooong shift and have just now had a chance to read all the posts. Ace's headline above is particularly funny. There was old Jeff Bezos having to buy WaPo just to get some left wing love and all Obama had to do is call him to fix his eponymous health insurance website. I get the feeling that Obama's Admin people are not that smart. What does that make Boehner and "the moderate Republicans"?
OK, I'll read a few more before bed.
