Overnight Open Thread (10-20-2013)
— Maetenloch

Dear ONT,

By the time you read this I will already be out of the country and on my way to Germany. I will try and keep up the ONTs but I will be on the move with spotty internet connectivity so no guarantees.

Once my friend and I are able to make contact with the underground we will follow their instructions and start on the rat line. If all goes as planned, we will make our way into the Principality of Lichtenstein and seek asylum there. Or at least T-shirts if we are unable to swing the ‘political expediteÂ’ fees. Oh and the east wind is rising  - I repeat the east wind is rising.

Coraje my friends!

Maetenloch

And in keeping with the traditions of a smart military blog, tonight will be a movie night with a feature presentation of the 1981 German epic of submarine warfare, Das Boot.

It’s a classic movie that’s long but worth the investment of watching. The book the movie is based on by Lothar-Günther Buchheim is a good read as well. And it fills in a lot of the details and motivations of the crew such as why the Captain was so disdainful of the ardent Nazi lieutenant as well as the significance of some of the events shown in the movie. It also makes clear that while the Captain and Chief Engineer were referred to as the ‘old men’ by the crew, in real life they were all of 30 and 27 years old.

Finally, the ONT so I can post my practically worthless observation. Was re-watching Gilmore Girls episodes this weekend and in season 7 Rory gets asked about her tenure at the Yale Daily news. She mentions the opportunity to interview "Barack Obama" and is asked about whether he is planning to run in 2008.

It made me wonder how many years before the run up to the 2008 election they were sliding Barack Obama into the national consciousness.

55 Jurgen Prochnow played the submarine commander in Das Boot, and he also played a ship commander (Captain?) in that God-awful movie "Wing Commander". Why is this relevant? Well, there's an infamous space scene (one of many) in Wing Commander where the space ship Prochnow's character is commanding has to hide from the enemy, the Kilrathi, in an asteroid field. The Kilrathi start bombing the asteroid field in an attempt to destroy Prochnow's ship. Prochnow's character much have gotten Das Boot flashbacks during this, because he tells his crew that they have to be absolutely silent so that the Kilrathi doesn't hear them. You know, so the Kilrathi doesn't hear through the vacuum of space! This scene is so stupid that words cannot do it justice. During halftime I switched over to Stossel and caught him saying that we need means-testing for Medicare and need to rework SS to be the safety net it was always meant to be and not a guaranteed retirement income. The last time he spoke up he had Libs cussing him out in the middle of the night. It might be another long night for him tonight.

I don't really appreciate having to distract my son from the topic of what faking an orgasm is. *** It is a very well-made show. I started watching it on On-Demand last week and watched the first through third episodes in one sitting. Titillating, yes, but very good writing and acting as well. Another show I've come to like in its short run, although nowhere near as good as Masters of Sex, is Betrayal.

177 Was watching a show on the drug gangs/murder in Chicago. They dubbed it Chiraqistan dut to the murder rate being higher than both. Posted by: RWC I was reading something on another blog this afternoon, and some folks from Chicago think that crime in Chicago is being under-reported. All about Rahm's TIF projects, that give the Mayor of Chicago a lot of discretionary power to spend money. Unexpected! Ain't that somethin'? Ain't that wild?

There was a US sub that was given to the royal navy, that was then handed to the Polish navy. It was attacked by friendly fire and had to be scuttled, in '42, I think. So, similar, but... not nearly as impressive as that Italian/kriegsmarine/IJN sub. That appears to have seen active service for all 3, whereas the other one only saw combat with Poland, from what I recall.

269 I'm about to have to part ways with a friend of 25 years (which is saying a lot because I'm 33) due to her having become a fanatical convert to the religion of progressivism. She doesn't know me anymore-she thinks she knows me (Teathuglican, etc) and loathes what she thinks she knows. I feel sorrowful.>>

Are you parting ways because of her beliefs or how she treats you for yours? If the former you kinda may suck. If the latter what are you sorry for?

311 So I got a copy of Windows Home Server 2011 a ways back. It has this keen way of backing up its "clients" -- Let's say you have a Win XP laptop. First backup, WHS backs up everything. Then you have a Win XP desktop as client #2 -- it only backs up stuff that's unique to client #2 along with a table that says what goes where. Add another Win XP computer, and it only backs up the stuff on #3 that wasn't on #1 or #2 and updates the table.

Once you have a steady group of clients, it starts doing incremental backups and keeping prior info -- so, for instance, it'll say "as of 10/1, it was like this -- and since then, it's changed on 10/6 and 10/9 by this and this."

All of which is really keen and all, but I've recently been working on the next step -- backing up the server, and especially backing up the server for stuff that is native to the server.

You might think that you could go -- "take all that stuff on the internal HD and back it up on the first backup drive hanging off a USB; then take all the stuff on the first active USB drive and back it up on the second backup drive hanging off a USB." -- and, rumor has it, you can.....but you have to delve deeply into Microsoft spaghetti-code hell in order to make it work. Registry edits, command-line interfaces, undocumented helper programs....and you have to sacrifice a white chicken during the right phase of the moon about halfway through, or it just won't work.

If anyone has done this (doubtful), please let me know how it went and if you EVER got it to work. Otherwise, that's one of the fun things I'm doing this week.

OK, let's try that communication thing a bit slower, so that old folks like me can get it.

I have four 2T drives on the server -- let's call them Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta. Alpha's internal (SATA), the rest are external USB 3.0 -- Beta on channel 1 and the others on channel 2. Alpha and Beta are meant to be used as active drives, Gamma and Delta are meant to be used as backups. Alpha and Beta have drive letters -- Gamma and Delta are designated backup drives. Client backups live on Alpha. Beta is "server native" content.

Right now, it seems that the system is configured to back up Alpha+Beta to Gamma, with overflow to Delta. The system is giving me "Gamma is almost full" messages on every backup (2x per day). If I could configure "Alpha backs up to Gamma; Beta backs up to Delta", this shouldn't be a problem.

How does one configure separate backup tasks?

She mentions the opportunity to interview 'Barack Obama' and is asked about whether he is planning to run in 2008. It made me wonder how many years before the run up to the 2008 election they were sliding Barack Obama into the national consciousness."

They had it mapped out well in advance. And they're STILL shilling for Obama.

A bunch of Hollyweird types who are rich enough that they'll never themselves be anywhere near an Obamacare insurance "exchange" have volunteered to tell America's low information voters how Obamacare is the greatest thing in the history of the universe.

As I keep saying, Obama will never quit demanding tax hikes. The House GOP need to put a nice fat package of tax hikes on the table so that they can claim to have been responsive to the request. Tax hikes that hit favored Democratic constituencies. To include returning to those thrilling days of yesteryear when Hollyweird were slapped with painfully large excise taxes. Dare him to veto it.

By the way, it is going to be very interesting in 2016. Conservatives tend to figure that the Democratic Party is monolithic, which is is not. It just looks that way. There are major internal schisms that are papered over for public consumption and the good of the Party. The left are better at the papering-over part than the right are.

Consider the Arkansas bloc of the Clintons (though interested observers will note that it's been several geologic epochs since Bill, Hill or Chelsea have been anywhere near the state of Arkansas). Now consider the Chicago bloc that gave us Obama. It is by no means certain that the Chicago bloc will meekly allow Hillary to grab the nomination in 2016. They may well run their own person. (My guess? Obama crony Deval Patrick.)

Both of these blocs have specific Hollyweird affiliates and allies. It will be informative to watch how that shakes out as the drop-dead-dates approach for the 2016 Democratic primaries. I recall an old book title: _Armageddon in Prime Time_. Something like that.

337 A gunman in a clown costume shot and killed the oldest brother of one of MexicoÂ’s most notorious drug trafficking families in the resort of Los Cabos, authorities said on Saturday.

Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix, 63, a former leader of the Tijuana Cartel, was shot in the head late on Friday at a family gathering in the southern tip of the state of Baja California Sur, a spokesman for state prosecutors said.

“A person dressed as a clown took his life,” he said.

I saw a clown drive-by shooting.

A tiny little car rolled up.

A bunch of flags came out that said "BANG!"

The car took off, but it crashed at the head of the block.

Two dozen clowns piled out of it and took off in all directions.

They didn't run very fast. Those huge shoes just don't work for that.

But they did get away. Goddamned clowns.

There are a ton on schisms in Demoland. You are very right to identify Chicago as a hotbed -- and it has been forever. May Day, with the obligatory military parades in Red Square, originally commemorated the Chicago Haymarket Riots of 1886 -- predating the glorious October Revolution in Russia by 31 years.

FDR came from the NY branch of progressive utopianism [and was born in Hyde Park, NY....BHO got his political start in Hyde Park, Chicago, in Ayres' living room -- just what is it about "Hyde Park"?]. JFK from the slightly-more pragmatic MA school. Note that all the aforementioned group (with the exception of BHO, himself) are whiter than Wonder Bread.

Race-based Dem power centers are, obviously, of more recent vintage than Bull Connor. It was always quite striking to see Robert Byrd and Jesse Jackson attached at the hip and bowing toward MLK without acknowledging MLK as a Republican.

Your observations regarding stress on the fracture lines are very much on-point. It's too bad the dipshit RINO contingent of the GOP will never exploit them.

I'm not sure I got more than every third word of that. There's only me and the BH, and a flock of computers that get used for specific things. "Traveler" is a compact little laptop that goes with us on trips so that we can read emails. I keep my financial stuff on "Lenovo7" and I'm typing this on "HP7". "Laptop17" is what I use for stuff with a lot onscreen, and "Laptop15" is what I use for client visits. The Windows Home Server thing has been earning its keep by watching over the flock and making sure everything gets booted and backed-up regularly, even if it normally lives in a closet.

358 cthulhu, your problem is that you want to backup the server operating system and configuration files seperately then the data - on the same box, using the same tool.  There are good tools that would do it - but they are pricey.  The basic tool that comes with the server might not be able to do it.

So, assuming you dont want to spend any money.  Configure Alpha to backup to Gamma - full - then incrementally.  I wouldn't mix drives without good software, raid controllers, etc.

Then periodically (before every Windows Update!!11!!) back up Beta by shutting down the server box, booting to a USB Key and image Beta as an ISO to a DVD (or a drive).  If your server OS ever goes tits up, just re-image beta.  That way you keep all your configuration settings, etc.

So try not to do Alpha + Beta, this = mess if the server goes down
Do Alpha to Gamma
Do Beta to Image (on Delta or on DVD)
Reserve Delta for unmounted porn or periodic static images of Beta

USB was only available in 12 Mb form at the time. By the time USB 2.0 made external drives over USB useful it was too late for SyQuest and the similar Iomega products. Regular hard drive gained capacity so rapidly that it didn't make sense to use anything else for external storage. Plus writable optical media got into the multi-GB range with DVD to offer a far cheaper solution for transport.

I think you missed a couple of things -- server/settings/client backups are all on Alpha. I'm sort of ok on Alpha backing up to Gamma.....and even doing overflow on Delta -- disks aren't that expensive. And it's certainly true that I don't need to be putting Alpha + Beta on Gamma. The fly in the ointment is backing up Beta. I could easily back Beta to Epsilon (new disk), but I need to disconnect it from the previous dealio and somehow cron it to happen automagically. I gather that this involves wbadmin and task scheduler -- http://tinyurl.com/ms326rc -- and, of course, the aforementioned chicken sacrifice.

Five out of the 12 largest hydrocarbon deposits in the US lie under California. At one time, it could have been the world's 7th largest economy if it weren't being counted as part of the largest. Its agriculture used to provide 1/7 of the fresh fruits and vegetables of the entire country. Its ports were the gateway to the East, its schools among the best in the nation.

And now it has the nation's highest income taxes and sales taxes, and property tax (based on the inflated value of real estate) is similarly outlandish. It spends more on trains to nowhere than other states spend for their entire state budget. Schools and ports have both fallen victim to unions, and tree-huggers have cut off energy and agriculture in the name of schemes that inevitably lead to intensely damaging wildfire conflagrations.

I had hope. I thought that the spirit that stood up to the system and bound them with Prop 13 could beat back the rot. Now I just want to get out while I still have something left. I want to find a safe place for the BH and I so that I can build comfort within that safety. I want to work in a place where the results of my efforts won't be wrested from me and used by criminals to pay off whores.

Like most of the nice coastal parts of Commiefornia, Santa Barbara is a marvelous place to live if you're either incredibly rich or dirt poor. Scamming the system via corporate welfare in the case of the rich, or via individual welfare in the case of the poor.

If you're an ordinary middle class Joe or Jane working for a living, playing by the incredibly thick rulebook, receiving no special economic treatment, and paying the taxes which the poor ignore and the rich evade, it's not such a great deal.

Just what I heard from his son Alex in a message he sent to a bunch of people.

Jerry made a lot of progress recently cleaning stuff out of the upstairs office area that was once filled with boxes of recently arrived tech to examine. He has finally accepted that it really isn't a suitable use of his more limited attention these days to play technology journalist. Better to focus on fiction and anything that comes up in non-fiction opportunities. A lot of it is just being 80 years old but the tumor they blasted out of his head a few years ago took a lot out of him and he didn't get it all back. It forced him to feel his age when he had been pretty spry before.

He has said he wanted to get the upstairs sufficiently roomy to host gatherings. Tea parties is how he put it but not necessarily the political sort, though I dare say he still has much to offer in conveying how and why this country is supposed to work.

Alex is concerned that the house may be becoming too much for them to manage, even with the cleaning lady who comes in. I suspect he also worries about the stairs and Jerry's balance. On top of this, Sable the Husky has bone cancer and her days are numbered. She has already lasted a surprisingly long time and still greets me enthusiastically when I visit. But at some point in the near future her front right leg bones are going to fail and they'll have to face the dreaded moment. I worry that losing Sable will cost them more than a dog, that she helps sustain Jerry. I can't imagine them getting another puppy at this point but not having a dog in the house would be a big gaping hole.

I don't see CalPERS or CalSTRS lasting much longer -- they've been using "normal" returns of 7% for a number of years when actual returns were <3% -- so there's a lot of air in the assets and a lot of undercounting in the liabilities.

As far as colonoscopies are concerned, I had mine done (nipped 5 polyps) last year, before Obamacare could mess things up too badly. That means that healthcare has until 2022 to get that part of things straightened out.

405 I said: "Scamming the system via corporate welfare in the case of the rich, or via individual welfare in the case of the poor."

Note that in Commiefornia, these often overlap.

I talked to a PG&E lineman who was out to our house to deal with a storm-damaged utility drop. He apologized for being late. He had been previously called out to a highly affluent neighborhood nearby. One of the teenaged scions of privilege had parked his shiny new Porsche right behind the guy's truck and then taken off with friends, leaving the truck immobilized.

He said, "You know what gets me? You know what Lifeline is?"

Sure, I said, it's the subsidized gas and electricity for low-income households.

He said, "Yeah, and this neighborhood has people earning four hundred grand a year, and half the houses are on fucking Lifeline."

I said, you're kidding. Surely you flag those accounts for attention?

He spat and said, "Used to. When I was new. Back when I figured it would do any good. It doesn't do any good. No one cares. No one enforces the rules. Nothing ever happens."

That's Commiefornia in a nutshell right there.

Yea, watched that happen at IBM with that ill fated OS/2 on the PowerPC project.  That got flooded with people rolling off OS.2 2.X with predictable results.

That one was doomed, but all you needed to do to figure that out was look at who the 3rd line and 2nd line managers were.  The code was fuck too of course, but even if it wasn't, that one had FAIL written all over it due to management that put their careers ahead of the product.

Bittersweet news, indeed. I only met Jerry once (in Santa Barbara [IIRC at a "Footfall" book signing]), but I certainly wish him well. It may be helpful to remind him of Kurzweil's "bridges" outlook [ http://tinyurl.com/n3l8jtt -- you don't have to live long enough to get the treatment that allows you to live forever, you just need to live long enough to get the treatment that lets you live long enough for others to develop the treatment that allows you to live forever].

IIRC, there's a Known Space character that gets to the future the same way -- ends up in a wheelchair and somewhat decrepit, but stays in the game by using last week's cutting-edge technology to make it to next week's innovation.

Traffic that time of day was zilch too.

Devices with mainstream batteries can last up to 10 hours during video playback and over 100 hours during screen-off music playback. In addition, Allwinner's newly designed ultra-standby mode enables over 60 days of device standby time and an advanced Talking Standby mode for low power voice talk."

420 "wondered just what in the Sam hell I'm going to do with twelve pounds of apples."

We have an apple tree and a pear tree in the yard, and both bore heavily this year. So, from our experience, two suggestions:

* Apple pies. It's a pain to peel, core, and slice the apples, but made with lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, and hot out of the oven, they are terrific. By the way, try mixing a couple tablespoons of brandy with the apples. Use the good stuff. The flavor is out of this world! Serve the pie warm, not hot, with good vanilla ice-cream. Our favorite is Blue Bunny, an Iowa brand; but regardless, get the good stuff.

* Apple sauce. This is particularly good if the apples are bruised, or even a little overripe. Just quarter the apples, simmer them with a little water in a heavy pot over a low flame until they're all mushy, then sieve through a Foley mill to filter out the skin, seeds, and whatnot. Add sugar and cinnamon to taste. The fresh stuff is *so* much better than what you get in the store. Try it with pork chops, or mixed into oatmeal for breakfast: I guarantee you'll love it.

Overall, yes.  Most of the bad crazy is along the coasts and in Palm Beach/Broward/Dade.  Dade being the worst.

Go inland 15-20 miles and you weed out 90% of the bad shit.  If you can find a place more than a few miles from an interstate, crime goes down quite a bit.  Perps seem to want that easy-on/easy-off access to victims.

Temperature wise, there's about 10 or so distinct bands in the state.  Miami, which is only about 65mi to the south of me is frequently 5-10 degrees hotter in the summer.  Its about 10mi north from my crib to PBI, but those 10mi put you in a different temperature zone that becomes very apparent in the winter months.

20mi north up around Jupiter a freeze is not uncommon.  Where I am, there's been maybe a handful of freezing nights in 20 years.

Jerry has a regimen of stuff he swallows every day, based largely on the theories of life extension gurus Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw. They used to make the rounds of the talks shows a lot in the 70s and many regarded him as a bit wacky but he has a pretty impressive resume:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durk_Pearson

I don't know if the stuff helps or not. Jerry likes to repeat the anecdote of a friend who once remarked while watching him down his daily set of doses, "Do you also eat food?"

The Niven character you're probably thinking of is Lucas Garner. He was one of the major characters in Larry first novel, 'World of Ptavvs' and was also Gil Hamilton's boss in the ARM. Larry never explicitly said so in any book but I always got the impression that Lucas Garner was born on the same day as him, 4-30-1938. This gave him a way to have a character present who knew the era of the author and reader in a way most of the characters could not.

I got the Southern Living Garden Book when I started looking into moving. It was a shock. I was used to the Sunset Western Garden Book -- and, indeed, the plant descriptions and general layout are exactly the same.....but the zones in the SLGB are based on peak cold and peak hot, where the SWGB focuses on microclimates.

There are tons of things that I've seen for 50 years (e.g. agapanthus, citrus) that don't readily grow in the south, except in limited bands. It feels off-kilter, like the land and air are off-kilter.

431 but the zones in the SLGB are based on peak cold and peak hot, where the SWGB focuses on microclimates.

Being a peninsula, about the bottom 2/3 of FL are not affected much by continental weather patterns.  That stuff kinda drops off south of the Cape.

There's still a coastal/central difference that can be quite dramatic.  ex. I did some work at 15 square mile South Florida water management filter marsh facility maybe 20 miles south of lake Okeechobee (which if you drew a line across the state lined up pretty close with my house)

I'd be up at 5am to drive out there and the temp in Palm Beach would be maybe 70, but by the time I got out around the US Sugar plant in Belle Glade an hour later, the temp out in the cane fields was in the mid 50's.   In the summer, the highs out in the cane fields would be higher than the coastal areas.

Prevailing wind patterns change seasonally too.  Summer months in Palm Beach prevailing winds are almost always out of the east, during winter its often out of the west.

Yup - from the Tao of Programming:

A manager went to the master programmer and showed him the requirements document for a new application. The manager asked the master: ``How long will it take to design this system if I assign five programmers to it?''

``It will take one year,'' said the master promptly.

``But we need this system immediately or even sooner! How long will it take if I assign ten programmers to it?''

The master programmer frowned. ``In that case, it will take two years.''

``And what if I assign a hundred programmers to it?''

The master programmer shrugged. ``Then the design will never be completed,'' he said.
