Overnight Open Thread (10-22-2013)
— Maetenloch

Shit. I’m still in Munich. All I wanted was a goddamned decent internet connection – and for my sins they gave me one.

Death of a Mouse

My mouse is dying...This morning, I found Baldy tucked in a corner of her cage, as far from her little den (and her sister) as she could possibly be.  Whether her sister kicked her out or Baldly, like the elephant, went off to die, I do not know.  ItÂ’s clear, though, that she has at most a few hours left.  She lies perfectly still, with only the slightest movement of her chest showing that she still slowly breathes.  Her rheumy eyes are half shut and unblinking.  Occasionally, a slight tremor shakes her body.

I realize as I watch her that this is the first time IÂ’ve ever been in the presence of dying.

The Vaunted British NHS May Soon No Longer Be Free

Nothing is as ever expensive as something the government gives you for free.

Stagnant health spending combined with ever rising costs and demand mean the NHS is facing "the most challenging period in its 65-year existence," the NHS Confederation said ... In a frank assessment of the dangers faced by the health service, senior officials at the confederation say that the two years following the next general election will be pivotal in deciding whether the NHS can continue to provide free health care for all patients.

The Vaunted British NHS: Now Paying Doctors a £50 Bonus to Put Patients on the ‘Death Pathway’

But at least itÂ’s still free. For now.

Can You Guess Who Said This?

Television is a mental illness. Wanting to be on television is a mental illness. Wanting to be president of the United States, wanting to be an actor—these are degrees of the same mental illness. If you need to be approved of simultaneously by more people than are in this room now, there’s a problem. I don’t know what would happen if television—or fame—stopped tomorrow for all the people who are pursuing it, what they would do. I suspect the idea of the zombie apocalypse is based on that…

IÂ’m gonna eat your flesh unless you applaud me! And thatÂ’s the predicate here of my own self-analysis. But you find yourself at various times in your life being fearful, because you donÂ’t know how to function in some environment in which youÂ’re not being applauded by a thousand people or more at once. So many times IÂ’ve looked back with a kind of sympathetic disgust at my personal conduct till age 40.

4 Progressives’ Double Standard on Women The Progressive Left fancy themselves as champions of women, ready to defend women against misogyny and the Patriarchy™. Yet they are quite willing to attack a successful reformist governor who is pro-life and otherwise conservative. That is but one of the many, many, many, many examples of the “pro-womyn” Left attacking women who dare think other than what they are told to think. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3657

19 Evening y'all! Speaking of fapping, a couple of weeks ago I was a bachelor for a week while the wife took the family out of town. It was great! I missed how much freedom I had living alone, except for the dogs. I could eat whatever I wanted, do whatever I wanted , stay up as long as I wanted, etc. I could also fap whenever I wanted, and most importantly WHEREVER I wanted. I almost wished the wife didn't come home!

Dude, it's MUSIC.  It's gonna be subjective.  Feel free to disagree, I'm not going to hold it against you.  Hard to know what you had a problem with though...the only person I said anything negative about was Hendrix, and I didn't dismiss him, I said that he was an all-time great but still overrated by people.  Is that what it was?  Or do you just hate Robert Fripp or something?

LIB means that the GOP needs to stop pretending they can be heroes playing fireman to the Left's pyromaniacs.

We don't have to taunt victims. Just don't pretend you can incur moral hazards by the truckload without setting up greater conflagration two days hence.

49 Hey morons. Your Government At Work Anecdote of the Day: As one of the only US citizens at my job, and THE only one that knows two of our products, I occasionally have to go places that won't admit non-citizens, usually military/govt installations. A prominent federal agency is having a "technology expo" sometime in the future. But you almost literally cannot bring any real technology in. You can't even bring in your own powerstrips. Laptops are allowed, but you have to give security your BIOS password, and there cannot be a built-in webcam, etc. Now, I understand security restrictions. It's not that. It's that in spite of all of that, they would be claiming to have a technology expo on site. It's literally going to be impossible to present anything other than pamphlets at this thing. At a convention center down the street, maybe people would get something out of it because there could be, you know, actual displays of modern technology! But no, at this tech fair, we get to use 10 year old laptops that won't run our software, and hand out paper forms that describe it instead.

99 Re the article on the HS allowing ambulance drivers to refuse to take terminally ill folks to the hospital if their directive says that they want to die at home... My mother was in a nursing home and did not want to die in a hospital. Actually, she didn't want to die in the nursing home either, but was in too much pain to go home and I could not have managed the situation alone, so she remained in the nursing home. She had made her peace with death. She knew it was upon her and she had been making peace with the family for days. Then, late one night, she became frightened. She wanted to go to the hospital and I told the nursing home to call the ambulance. At the hospital, of course there was nothing they could do. She had since calmed a bit, again accepting her fate, but was still quite uneasy. The doctors and nurses pulled me aside and said that it's normal. That the drive in humans is to live and that whether one has accepted their fate or not, most do not simply lay down and take it. My mother went home that night and died just a few days later as I was holding her hand. She was on Medicare and, sure, there was a cost associated with her visit to the hospital that night, but there's no way in hell I would ever have denied her, or anyone else struggling for a final reprieve, that last desperate quest. It's inhumane to tell a person with the capacity to plead for help that they might get it.... if only they hadn't signed that piece of paper.

166 Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at October 22, 2013 10:15 PM (DmNpO) You raise a good point NDH about the role of caring in medicine. There does need to be a better way to handle these cases, I just don't know what it is. I've got casebooks full of stories of well meaning family members who get worried at the last minute, especially after the family member loses consciousness and calls 911. Ambulances being trained in "load and go" have little discretion in how to handle it. The NHS approach of course is the opposite extreme and really undercuts human experience and frankly autonomy.

We have some kind of daisy going nuts and spreading like ground cover, which is fine with me. Hibiscus. Daylilies had to be transferred near house as after 2004 hurricanes roses and things croaked...a few stubborn ones remain, in garden that had dirt put in over stupid sand. Gardenias. Palms. You "can" grow stuff this time of year that will bloom in spring...when the squirrels don't notice, little bastids. I have given up except for stuff on porch, thanks to snakes and bugs and other varmits. I am too delicate for this.

I have some concern the giant stinging hornets in China will come here and kill me, imported on a banana boat or with aliens in vans on the turnpike. I saw the article a few weeks ago in Daily Mail and read they are in France, killing bees. In China they appear to have a taste for children (of course, it could all be made up, but, hey!). They are huge. I will pack up and leave if they are spotted her, like this summer's giant mosquitoes, this land of giant lizards and pythons in toilets from Everglades. I am not made for the jungles.

On the bright side I am not in California and finding sea monsters on shores----which were warning prior to 8.9 earthquake in Japan! Yehaw.

251 126 Nice ONT, Maet.

>>I realize as I watch her that this is the first time IÂ’ve ever been in the presence of dying.

Even the death of a mouse can affect someone.

I guess the closest I've come to the moment of death was my old Siamese cat, who died in my arms of natural causes (old age). Every time I tried to leave her in the kitty bed I'd made her, she'd grip my finger - really. She didn't want me to leave.

My mom waited until my dad, sister, and I had left her room for the night before she passed away, which may have been for the best as I was really not ready for her to go.

Posted by: Y-not at October 22, 2013 10:23 PM (5H6zj)

I've been in the room for two people's passings -- the BH's mom and my grandpa. In both cases, the patient was unresponsive but clearly in distress, and a person in the room (the BH's sister in the first case, me in the second) talked a little about how cherished they were, and how we wanted greedily to have them stay.....but didn't want to hold them in pain if they needed to let go, to rest. We'd find a way to go on and hold them dear in our hearts though they were no longer corporally with us.

And then they were gone.

The first time, I was just amazed -- it was like, "doesn't there have to be some medical event?!?" But the more I thought about it, the better it felt -- not in the sense that it wasn't painful, but that it was doing something difficult but the right thing to do. With my grandfather, I knew going in what might happen, and was unsurprised when it did....and felt even more sure that it was for the best.

I wish I didn't have to. I miss my grandfather terribly.

275 Indeed, although i'd note that my experience with the medical system suggests that it is uncomfortable with death itself, and as such often avoid discussing it, leaving family and patients ill prepared. Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (tablet) at October 22, 2013 10:47 PM (GaqMa) In my opinion that is why Hospice is so very important. Getting past the docs who aren't ready to admit that curative medicine cannot do anything more is a pain but once the move is made into palliative care, everyone can start to learn to cope. The tragedy is when we aren't called in until the patient has only a few days left and the family is already in great distress. The guidelines are that if left with no curative steps the patient is likely to pass within 6 months. Doesn't mean they have to die in 6 months, just means they have recognized that 'normal medicine' isn't doing anything more than prolonging the inevitable (usually at great cost and discomfort). Great relationships can be formed between care givers and pts and their families during the Hospice time and it helps families prepare (and cares for them after). Often it isn't the dying who need us near as much as the living. I was a Hospice chaplain. I have the odd honor of having performed 4 funerals and a wedding. Hubby was a Hospice Medical director.

I had signed the Hospice agreement and would not have permitted extreme measures in a futile attempt to save her life. And, she knew when she arrived at the hospital that they could do nothing for her, but I could never... would never... have told her to lie quietly in her bed and accept the inevitable when her body and spirit were reaching out for.... something.

317 Speaking of things that get themselves killed, my son got to see his first skunk road kill this week. We have watched it progress from smashed in the middle of the road to flattened along the side of the road. He asked me why the birds haven't eaten it or something else dragged it off into the woods. I had to remind him what he was smelling.

So, I cued up Loudon Wainwright III's Dead Skunk song, and now he is in heaven, belting it out at the top of his lungs. I think he will be the pride of the 2nd grade tomorrow, at least at recess.

349 The dead skunk issue reminded me of the rash of dead opossums I've seen around here. It's the oddest thing. I've never seen a live opossum here in NH, though they clearly exist, but in the past few months I've seen at least six dead ones on the side of the road. And the oddest part is that nothing eats them. Even if they were clearly squashed by a car, so they didn't die of some illness that might keep the scavengers away, nothing eats them. I've seen the crows around my house eat damn near anything remotely edible, but they leave the opossums alone. Odd that.

357 The stuff about dying mice reminds me . . . we foster orphaned kittens for the local Humane Society.  Of the last batch we got, one was really sick (I don't think the vet or anyone else even glanced at the poor critter before releasing it to us, it was that sick).  Anyway, for a week or so we did the best we could for the kitten, but one evening something changed.  It was as if the kitten had been struggling to get better, but after a while it gave up.  Like it didn't want to struggle anymore, or maybe it was weary of the pain.  Anyway, I fell asleep with it next to me, and sure enough, when I woke up it was dead.  Anyway there was a distinct change in the animal over the course of a couple of hours before it expired, there was no mistaking the fact that these were its last hours.

383 334 @Tammy,

Indeed, winter pruning.
I'm going to take my chances that the internets are mostly telling me right and trim everything smaller than a #2 pencil.
We'll see. If I fail, it was fun experiment.

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (tablet) at October 22, 2013 11:23 PM (GaqMa)

In California, you prune coming out of winter -- 'cause 80% of the time, they've been growing straight through. In general, you want to prune roses so that they look like a hand above the graft -- there are about 5 major canes, they spread out and don't cross, and they leave room for growth. You want the top bud in each cane to face away from the center of the plant. On older roses, each of the old canes' "fingers" can come up to a "hand" of its own, but the same general rules apply -- thin out the little things and the stuff that makes a bramble, and sort into sturdy platforms for the next year's growth -- always with the top buds facing away from the center.

387 I'd go with 6.8 SPC II. Seems to be catching on, and powerful enough for deer.

Posted by: Hollowpoint at October 22, 2013 11:32 PM (X9Mnx)

I looked at it, but decided in favor of 6.5 / .264 LBC because the 6.8 was intended to perform best out of a shorter barrel, with terminals along the line of the 7.62x39 out of a compact package.  It looks like a great CQB round, but is not nearly as efficient with longer barrels, especially beyond 200 yards.  I'm building the rifle just because I can, so I picked 6.5 as it is more versatile.  6.8 SPC II is catching on lately, so I haven't ruled it out.  My upper and lower won't show up until Christmas, and I haven't picked a barrel yet, so it's still on the table.

411 100 Re the article on the HS allowing ambulance drivers to refuse to take terminally ill folks to the hospital if their directive says that they want to die at home... 423 Where I live there are dozens of feral cats. There was one cat in particular that I always liked I named him George because he had a very large face  which reminded me of George Foreman.

George would always come up the back steps of the deck and lay about in the sun.

My dogs used to go crazy when they saw George but he wouldn't flinch he would just kind of shrug and laugh in his cat way and say stupid dogs you got nothing on me.

I always tried to lure him in to the house when the weather turned bad but his feral ways would not allow it.

Last winter on a particularly cold snap I tried repeatedly to get him to come inside or go into the shed, I had left the door open and left food on the floor but he would not go inside. His feral ways would not allow him to.

I found him frozen stiff the next day.

I wrapped him in burlap and buried him in the bog in my backyard.

That was very sad almost as sad as my dad passing in many respects because it didn't have to happen.

Posted by: Y-not at October 22, 2013 10:23 PM (5H6zj)

............................Y-not, my Grandma, who passed away 3 yrs ago at almost 104 did the same w/ my aunt.  My aunt spent the last several days w/ her 24/7, sleeping there.  Grandma passed after my aunt fell asleep after midnight one night.

As for cats, here's my weird Sally the cat story.  We got home from vacation, wife goes in and comes out saying "I think Sally's dead".  I go in, she's laying under the coffeetable, no breathing evident and cold, no heartbeat.

I go dig a hole in the backyard, pick her up to carry her out and as we get to the backdoor I hear a noise!  Stop and check again for breathing, heartbeat, nothing.  We decide it's just air escaping from a dead body being moved, as we'd heard of.

I lay her down in the cold ground, prepare to cover her and then she moves!  Take her inside, lay her down and start petting her, talking to her.  She revives enough to see visible breathes, but nothing more.  After a few minutes I realize it is her time and it's best to let her go.  Se lasted a few more minutes and was gone.

I'm convinced she hung on as best she could till we got home.  Then my touch helped to bring her back just a bit.  It was comforting and helped us w/ her loss.  (Other than the fact I almost buried her alive!)

I'm partial to the Diet- still sorta tastes like the 'real' stuff, but since I'm supposed to watch the sugars I imbibe... Iced tea is the poison of choice, though. No lemon, no sweetener, no "flavors", and strong enough to make your hair stand on end. By the quart.

The Health insurance companies also have rates on their sites.... and how much subsidy you get .... without having to put in the information....

Because I leave a lot of money in the business... and only take out what I need.... it turns out I could get 3600 worth of subsidy for myself on a silver plan... but I don't need it as I'm retired Navy...

Whole thing is about Wealth redistribution.... and the YOUNG need to be warned..

Office copay is $30.00. $0.00 deductible.

Under Obozocare it's $1098.00 a month and a 12K deductible!!!!

A 120% percent increase in monthly premiums and a 10% tax on my gross salary.

How the fuck is this a better deal for me and my family?

For example, MB Provincial Highway 59 (in Winnipeg, Lagimodiere Boulevard) becomes Federal Highway 59 in MN, and PH 75 (the main link from Winnipeg to the USA) immediately becomes Interstate 29, but just a hop, skip, and a jump over the border you can take ND Highway 59 through Pembina, thence over the Red River to link up with US 75 to go through Minnesota.

.............Thanks Jose for posting this here.  This, and the following moron comments helps me understand WTF is going on.  My wife has been investigating this, never able to log on to the Obamacare, like MILLIONS of others.

In our situation, if it can possibly help anyone else, w/ the limited knowledge out there...

Our BC/BS said we could still carry our current policy.  It's high-deductible HSA.  Now I'm hearing that's not going to be allowed, so I'm not sure about that.  They sent a letter that we could keep it!  It's pricey IMO, 720 for 2 per month, 3500 deductible w/ a 9000 end of out of pocket.  But it will go up in Nov. like every year, I'm afraid to over 1000, really not affordable.

So BC/BS sends us to look up other stuff at their site and Jules finds we get some subsidies that will reduce premiums, but greatly raise our deductibles from the high level they are and also the out of pocket exps.  So as someone said here, you can look on your providers site and also see what is available from the "Affordable" exchanges if you have one of the providers participating.  We looked, it sucks, but everyone has to check for them selves.

Now those of us doing our research look at it like we have good choices.  But what is going to happen to the less informed?  They just go to the ER as before and we pay for it?

616 In case not noted: CaliforniaÂ’s 4th District court may or may not have banned AK style rifles. " Although other courts have rejected this expansive reading of Heller as precluding a state from banning assault weapons, and he (William Zondorak, defendent) cites no case applying Heller's principles to invalidate a state's ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, Zondorak asserts that we should construe Heller to bar California from criminalizing his possession of a semi-automatic AK series rifle. We conclude the ban on specified semi-automatic assault weapons under the AWCA does not transgress theSecond Amendment, and affirm Zondorak's conviction."" Told you it wasn't exciting.

Mind you, even Haiku was less work than this, though a little unstable.

It has a 16" 5:4 ratio screen, though, so it will be good for writing.

My old (new) laptop has an issue where it randomly shuts down, tested the heck out of the memory and that's not it. I think it's actually the SATA controller.

657 For anyone who might say "Lawha?" Haiku is the descendant of the obscure BeOS operating system. It's "lightweight" and consistent and quick and stuff, but it's also in alpha testing, which means not entirely stable and parts won't work. But you can go online and browse and do basic stuff. It's a small dev team and could die out before it's done. Though I did notice the ReactOS team is meeting again after like years without progress, that's a non-MS-code Windows XP clone, though it sounds like they're refocusing a little.

669 I was very enthused for BeOS at one point. Built a dual processor machine for it using the BP6 board. This was back when almost all Intel CPUs and chipset supported two sockets but only the more expensive ones were officially supported. Ran two 533 MHz Celerons and performed very nicely for its day. It was a dual boot BeOS and Win2K box but eventually just ran Win2K on a daily basis.

It's a shame. BeOS was multi-core ready before multi-core became a mainstream feature. Probably would have adapted well to ARM and mobile devices. I suspect that was part of the attraction when Palm acquired the IP. Supposedly you could see some of the ancestry in WebOS but I never got a chance to play with that enough to see for myself.
