Overnight Open Thread (10-23-2013)

A conspiracy of beer, brauten, buses, and busyness has brought the ONT to this lowly state. I blame society and the French.

Redskins - The New Gay Marriage

How an issue no one even talked about suddenly became the new PC litmus test.

I checked our archives to see when our own blogging about the anti-”Redskins” movement began. Could be that this subject, which has been percolating for ages, reached full boil on the left a long time ago, but if it did, we missed it. The first notice we took of it was Erika’s post in March about a small group of congressional Democrats trying to do something legislatively about it. (They’re still trying, by the way.) A few weeks later there was something about the D.C. City Council wanting to do something about it. Then Redskins owner Dan Snyder made his big blunder: He told USA Today, “We’ll never change the name. It’s that simple. NEVER — you can use caps.” That was him essentially daring the left to try to force him by engineering new “enlightened” ground rules on “Redskins” usage for the media and political class. A few months later, “Slate” dropped the word; Rachel Maddow followed suit and then, inevitably, Obama was asked about it and tepidly endorsed changing the name. And so now, with record speed, here’s O’D in the highest self-righteous dudgeon towards people who hold a position that virtually no one gave a wet fart about six months ago. To me, that’s the worst part of the whole anti-Redskins phenomenon. It’s not opposing the term itself that’s annoying; that’s defensible. It’s not even getting indignant with people who don’t see a problem with using it. It’s the sanctimony coupled with the faddishness of the whole thing. How dare Dan Snyder disagree with something that the left didn’t care about five minutes ago? How dare he?

It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

89 I thought up until this week that the Redskins would never change their name. I am having second thoughts now. The collective is going to go after the owner (as a visible representation of the team) and they won't stop until he bends to their wishes. Posted by: Truck Monkey, Gruntled New Business Owner at October 23, 2013 10:29 PM (jucos) My guess is that unless something remarkable happens to convince Dan Snyder to change the name, whenever he decides to sell the team one of the conditions the NFL will set is a name change.

95 60 Re Hailing the Redskins: You know, the Plantagenets did not go around naming things after Angles, Saxons, Danes, or Jutes, and I'm not aware of any Northern state that has a "Rebels" high school football team that honors the South. Instead, both just said "we won" and moved on. My advice is to take a compliment as a complement where it is intended as one. Here's to you, Redskins, for you broke a American square. Posted by: T. at October 23, 2013 10:24 PM (m/Cr5) --One ESPN guy was saying Lee Corso's dancing while wearing Chief Osceola gear was offensive to Indians. That got me to thinking: Sofia Vergara's role in Modern Family (a pretty middle-of-the-road, mainstream sitcom), while yummy, is IMO de facto Latina minstrelsy. Her character is soaked in stereotypes like being superstitious, "spicy," expressive, etc. (FTR, I am not offended by it at all.) So is it okay because Vergara herself is Colombian, despite the fact that she's working off a script written mostly if not wholly by pasty white folks?

169 It's pretty well-established fact that Mohammed never set foot in Jerusalem, but try arguing that with a billion people who will kill you for stating such.

This'll really blow your mind: there's more evidence that Muhammad set foot in Jerusalem than that he set foot in Mecca.

The Temple is sort-of alluded-to in sura 17, where it talks about the "mosque of the children of Israel". But you're right, given the Qur'an's emphasis on Moses, it would appear that Islam was setting up Muhammad as the new Moses - as someone who would not himself enter the promised land.

Mecca on the other hand is named in one sura - 48 - which Yehuda Nevo debunked as a forgery, based upon the reformed coinage of the Umayyads of AD 696+. It's probably also alluded to in suras 14 and 22.

But where are the non-Muslim records of Mecca prior to the 680s AD? I've looked for over 10 years and I haven't found anything. Instead I find references to caliphs like Muawiya who won't even approach Madina.

195 Sounds about right. There's a clear divide even within Bolles. You have the Bolles kids whose parents are big money. Then you have the kids who are "on scholarship." Meaning that they play sports or have somebody at the school that put in the word for them. You can't have "sports scholarships" in high school, so they have to do shit around campus and over the summer. Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at October 23, 2013 10:43 PM (GEICT) This guy played football, but he was definitely a money boy. First semester of freshman year, he was playing football, but going out every night and partying. He was never in our room when the other roommate and I went to sleep, but he was there in the morning. Then he would go to the infirmary and sleep for the rest of the morning and ended up not going to class after the first month or so of classes. Christmastime my roommate and I get calls from the Dean of Students asking us a bunch of questions and asking us to stop by his office when we get back to school. Turns out the little dickmitten got a 0.0 gpa, and his momma was going to sue the college President, Dean of Students, all of his professors, our RA, and the roommate and I for "not taking care of him". So we had all kinds of meetings with the above, and she backed down real quick when we told them he was always going on roadtrips with his older brother who was a sophomore. Dickhead brother failed out after the next semester. Man did this kid have a wardrobe though. He had at least 20 Ralph Lauren polo oxford cloth shirts that he kept in a pile on the floor.

245 The Canadian Death Panel is nothing like the IPAB or Obamacare death panel. This has been on the books for 20 years and only deals with cases when their is a dispute between the doctors and the family of a comatose person that questions when to remove live supporting care. Not some panel that orders the tubes removed even if both the doctors and the family want them to stay under for rule to save costs like the Liverpool care pathway. Cases like this need someone outside the situation to make the chose. Some Families have a hard time letting go and some doctors can become to close to be impartial and force the issues. Not even sure if they "recommend" termination which is not binding or "order" termination meaning must and without delay or appeal. Sometimes a Family needs a outsider that looked at the case to nudge them to let go and they do and sometimes they don't

I found out near the end of my second year, from one of the few friends I had there, that the guys were literally afraid of me. "He looks like he might not start a fight, but he wouldn't have a problem with it and he'd damn sure beat your ass." I laughed long and hard. And made sure to stare everyone directly in the eye. When we returned from Christmas break, all of his clothes were still piled up on the floor. We got a huge box and dumped them in it, told his brother to come and get them. We think the shirts may have had a mouse or two end up in them because there were some mice in the room because he left a couple of boxes of crackers open. I also hate shopping for clothes -- and hate, hate, hate, hate "fashion" trying to get me to waste my money. So I buy unfashionable stuff and wear it until it's well-nigh disintegrated. Then I try to get the exact same thing so I won't have to evaluate anything new.

Reason I bring this up is that I had a pair of mouse-grey Van's skating shoes that I might've put 100,000 miles on -- wore 'em to Europe a couple of times, had 'em for years -- finally wore entirely through the sole. So I go to the Van's outlet, and they'd discontinued that model....except they had one pair left in my size in the remainders, and it was bright blue. Being a creature of habit, I got the pair anyway.

Unfortunately, I wasn't halfway into the tread before the uppers started separating from the sole. Really annoyed me, but -- of course -- I still wore 'em. During last week's trip to Oregon, I noted that I could look through the edge of the shoe and see the ground when I was about to put 'em on -- and I've only worn the tread smooth on a little patch, size of a quarter.

I may have to shop for shoes again.

Last week I bought a wool navy peacoat, made by the same company that makes actual peacoats for the actual Navy. Tonight I wore it for awhile with multiple layers like I would in cold weather, and it fit well. The sleeves could be about an inch longer, but they come to my wrists when my arms are at my side, so that's probably a good fit. They ride back a bit when I raise my arms, but I can pull my sweater sleeves out to cover my wrists if necessary. Other than that it fits fine. Based on the customer comments, if I bought a size larger, it would fit like a tent.

If the turban is really high up, then the guy is either growing his hair long or wants everyone to think he's growing his hair long. That would definitely be Sikh.

(Beards over 6" long are also a marker. But younger Sikhs won't have got that far, and older Sikhs tend to trim them for convenience.)

345 If you want a deterministic predictable response time system, the easiest way to accomplish that is allocate the maximum possible memory chunk needed per session up front, and key its release to session termination.

Let the virtual memory system deal with commitment and sparseness issues.

If you want to be even cleverer, you never even release those maximum per session blocks, rather keep a pool of them laying around that is constantly recycled, because there's always a "next session" coming.

That saves dipping into the OS memory management for per session allocation/release cycles.

I used that trick at IBM to shave significant time of an operating system's install.

The key to responsiveness is making shit as deterministic and as pre-allocated as possible.  Java is none of that.

347 The problem I've run into with clothes shopping is if I buy cheap stuff it falls apart in a couple years, and if I better higher quality stuff it lasts a long time but only after showing enough wear to not be appropriate for many work situations. So I end up with a closet full of stuff that is nowhere near the condition  for being thrown out but I wouldn't want to show up to a job site in either. If I lose enough weight I'll finally have an excuse to get rid of a lot of it and get new stuff.

Shoes were long a big problem for me because my feet are freakishly wide. Getting fitted meant having to go with more expensive brands. The Dr. Scholl's brand finally offered something inexpensive that matched my feet but they disappeared from retail for several months early this year. More in police adventures from today:

Three students at a Chino elementary school were injured Wednesday after a student discharged an assault rifle mounted on a police motorcycle that was on display, an official said.

The AR-15 assault rifle was mounted on the motorcycle that was on display during a drug prevention event, said Tamrin Olden, a spokeswoman for the Chino Police Department.

“The rifle was … secured in the mount on the motorcycle during the incident,” Olden said at an evening news conference. “The child did approach the mounted rifle.”

The students -- whose ages were not immediately known -- suffered minor injuries, Olden said. None were hit by gunfire. Two were likely struck by metal debris, resulting in "extremely minor injuries," she said.

Yea, at the external heat spreader interface.  The silicon inside has to be near meltdown.

If they want to go much further with this shit, people gonna have to look a lot harder at SiC tech.  Yields are lower cuz SiC crystal production sucks and tends to have a lot of defects, but you can run that shit blistering hot without it melting.

With an IR laser doing some doping experiments a few years ago I used a chunk of granite as a wafer holder while fiddling with some SiC wafer and the freaking granite melted down before the SiC wafer did.

391 Too many cops are justifying their shootings of people and pets with "I was in fear"

First, it seems that cops are putting their personal paranoia first regardless of the safety of the community they're sworn to protect

When LAPD opened fire on those Filipina women who were delivering papers, there were slugs found inside homes and all over the neighborhood. Luckily it was early enough where no one was outside at the time

Second, all these fearful cops don't seem to possess the bravery society is told they have. One in Sarasota told a reporter that a wrong house overreaction raid was justified "because I want to go home at night"

The thing is, I'd known the guy for a while and never thought anything was odd.....but then I encountered a sandal without him being around and was like, "oh, he must of gotten this for when he's DM'ing a campaign with the giants...." He had topped out regular production shoes and his feet frequently hurt (thus the sandals)....but kept futzing around with production footware because buying custom shoes is ridiculously expensive.

396 "Deputies in Sonoma County shot to death 13 year old Andy Lopez in Santa Rosa for carrying a TOY replica gun"

For those of you who are not from northern Commiefornia, let me clue you in that Santa Rosa used to be way out beyond the northern perimeter of the SF Bay Area sprawloplex, to where you had to drive for an hour and a half through mostly empty open country, and it used to define the word "boring".

Nice, and polite, and pleasant, but boring. I used to joke, "Shit, I can't sleep, I better head on up to Santa Rosa. That'll do it for sure."

Nice, and polite, and pleasant, and boring, and safe. Lily-white and strictly law-abiding. The best part of the pre-1960s USA. The kind of town where people did not lock their front doors. Where they left the keys in the car when they popped in to get the dry cleaning.

Then, starting in the Nineties, thanks to the immigration boom, things changed. Dramatically for the worse.

I hadn't been there in a while, and someone I knew said they had been up for the weekend, and I said, "Good old Santa Rosa, as soporific as ever, what ho? Here, have some of my No-Doz."

They stared at me and said there had been a lethal drive-by shooting one (1) block down from them, as they dove for cover behind a bench, which was anything other than inducive of restful sleep that night.

Hispanic gangs, of course. "Doing the jobs Americans won't do."

I'm quick to condemn genuine police overreaction and excessive use of force. But I have to say that if I was working street patrol level law enforcement up there, and a visibly Hispanic kid was waving something that looked near enough as makes no difference to a for-real AK, which is now a very real possibility in those parts, and if that kid was ignoring loud commands and drawn weapons? I'd turn him into a colander.

The cops are out of control.  The thing in LA with them "smelling" meth and killing an old man was defended as his fault for not obeying and respecting their authority enough.  Of course this is a government employee union thing, all about self preservation and all that.  Few years back Denver PD no-knocked the wrong house and killed a guy for wielding a pop can in his sleep.

The war on drugs, at this point, is nothing more then a jobs program - which is why they object strongly to the encroaching decriminalization.  Two cops per thousand people?  Clinton's great idea lol - jobs program for government employee unions who are bankrupting our cities and complete overkill.  I never see anyone pulled over any more without 2-3 units behind them.  Big local suburb has no idea what to do with all of them, they just drive around in their cars all day and do little or nothing to prevent any crime (must nod to some of those guys, they did some great things the after theatre shooting).

Same thing applies to first responder fetish after 9/11 and establishment of the DHS and TSA.  Boosh really threw them a bone there, in the name of compromise.  Welcome to the police state.

Nothing there about him "waving" the gun at them. He was carrying the gun, two cops saw him walking with it and got excited. According to Sonoma County Sheriff and Santa Rosa PD, the deputies ordered the boy to drop the gun, and fired when he turned around

When he fell on the gun, he was ordered to move away from it. When he didn't respond, they rushed and cuffed him and found they had a dying kid with a BB gun on him

Their first mistake was in rolling up on a situation like that without hanging back a bit and observing.  Every patrol car should probably be equipped with a cheap $20 set of Walmart binoculars.

A few seconds of observation would have told them if it had the heft of a real AK.

Old school cops 30 years ago could tell if someone was packing just by the slight alteration it produces in gait.  Now they do random street searches and suffer negative publicity because their skills have degraded

As a result, you have a ton of overarmed, over-amped washouts on the beat.

Further, they're trapped within ridiculous RoE that flip common-sense on its head. If one of 'em would have touched the boy with his hand, he'd probably be getting photographed for sex-offender registration....but shooting him dead in the street? -- just another day at the office.

“Age does not preclude somebody from being aggressive toward deputies,” Whitmore said. “The lesson here is… don’t pull a gun on a deputy.”

Pate said Mallory, a former engineer with Lockheed Martin, respected law enforcement and would never have used a gun against officers.

“He would never point a gun at officers,” said Pate, 48. “Every day I stay in that house with that bloody bedroom … where I know he was taken from me for no reason.”

Mallory did own two guns that were in the house, Pate said. She said his glasses were beside his bed when he was killed, and could not have seen because of poor eyesight.

“He was shot in his bed before there was any warning given,” Bergener said..

Marijuana was found on another part of the property where TonyaÂ’s lived, she said.

“There was a drug operation that was certainly going on in this house,” Whitmore said.

They're being failed by their institutions. The cops, themselves, are not as much to blame as the systems that put them in places where they were not ready to go, gave them orders impossible to square with human decency, and outfitted them for jobs they should never attempt.

All true. The Sonoma County airport is actually still named after him.

With regard to the good shoot/bad shoot debate, when I was 13, I was often toting around a lever-action BB gun that could potentially be mistaken for an actual rifle. If a cop had rolled up and shouted at me, I would have had that thing on the ground faster than you can say Jack Sprat. Would have dropped it like it was suddenly boiling hot.

Because while I was a total dumb-ass at age 13 about many things, what I was not a dumb-ass about is that COPS CARRY REAL GUNS. And that COPS WILL SHOOT PEOPLE WHO THEY THINK MIGHT BE A THREAT.

They had gun lockers where you were to store your guns when not in use, but you had 48 hours to return them to the gun locker. Since most of the hunters went out most mornings, they just kept their guns in their cars.

The roids don't help, Cthulu ... yeah there are some good cops, but it's completely out of hand ... and men are men, fallible and motivated by their own interests.  We should not live in fear of those who are supposed to serve (each other) and protect (themselves).

Another example is the cops in NY who not only participated in the motorcycle stunting motorist beat down, but one was one of the primary aggressors, smashing the windows of the families car with his helmet.  One bad apple my ass ...

Interesting to me is the dramatic drop in violent crime over the years. I suppose the ridiculous amount of policing could be part of that, but it does not seem to correspond to where the greatest effects should be felt.  Latino drug gangs certainly are involved in the bulk of the murders here.

Other factors could be the increase in CCW (I think Chicago is a prime example of that), the rise of Internet pron, and elimination of environmental lead.  I find the latter the most interesting.

Full decriminalization of the ganj would effectively end the drug war and reduce crime even further - let them concentrate on the real bad stuff like flesh eating Russian crap.  Looks like a majority are on board with that for the first time ...

453 Hi Everyone! I made it with absolutely no problem from my house six miles from Boston to Augusta, Maine. I had no traffic and my navigation system worked perfectly. Somewhere along the way, I decided to stay two nights. I will work from home over the weekend. I stopped at hotel I had booked this morning, the room I had was only available one night. I would have to be in another building if I wanted to stay two nights. I got to the hospital within minutes. Paul hadnÂ’t eaten and neither had I. I was surprised that he looks good, his legs have feelings but he canÂ’t move them. Because of his infections, heÂ’s isolated. I asked nurse if I should gown up and she said no, I would be fine. I found ApplebeeÂ’s menu online and had him place order because he wanted candy and I was going to CVS to buy water & candy he wanted. I was lost for an hour because it was dark out, there are not many lights on and the rotaries are the worse I have ever seen. I thought MA had screwed up rotaries, but the ones here have five or six options to take and the signs are confusing and there is a sign that hides what the total routes offered are. IÂ’m glad I came here. I am only going out during day. There arenÂ’t many street lights, or none. Paul was happy to see me but he couldnÂ’t eat at first because they were going to do a CT Scan. Then it was too late to order his dinner.

You are exactly illustrating my point. If you construct a factory to make "FAIL", and it does, you cannot go back and say, "that ingredient caused the FAIL". The factory will make FAIL out of the finest of ingredients because that's what it was constructed to do. The people involved -- policemen -- are an ingredient.....they can't be proud to have caused the death of innocents; that can hardly be what they wanted to do when they signed up. But that's where they ended up -- with guns in their hands, paranoia in their minds, RoE in their drills, and no trained framework to evaluate the situation.

Cthulu I think we are saying the same thing, but talking around each other a bit - I agree with your point - I guess my point is that your factory is made of men, merely men, not a thing into itself, and they have built that structure through the pursuit of their own self interest, like all men, and they have utilized the political process and their power to construct something that is of benefit to them (govt employee unions), at the expense of us (the republic).

Individuals are individuals, and should judged individually for their actions.  Most people are mostly good, and usually make the right choices, individually.  When we combine people into groups, we sometimes seem to be freed of our individual moral compass for the good of the group, and are capable of unspeakable acts of inhumanity to protect said factory.  To say otherwise is akin to letting war criminals off for just following orders, in my way of thinking.

Individuals should be judged as individuals, and groups as groups, which is why I have no problem saying "the cops are out of control" without feeling the need to defend individual cops and obviate them of their own moral authority.  After all, they, along with others (the dem pols, in the case of govt employee unions), built that factory, it was not forced upon them some by otherworldly force ...

If I were to focus on one very significant part of our discussion, it would be "factory is made of men, merely men, not a thing into itself, and they have built that structure through the pursuit of their own self interest".

The thing is that the people who work in factories and the people who build them are different people. People who work in factories want to be proud of the stuff they produce....people who build factories want to profit from their investment. It doesn't make either one more virtuous -- without profit-seeking, there wouldn't be any factories at all. It is undeniable, however, that a factory built for FAIL will produce FAIL, irregardless of the quality of its ingredients or the earnestness and skill of its workforce.

489 Then there's the case of Park Forest IL's finest killing a 95 year old man in a rest home for refusing to go to the hospital for surgery. The man was a WW II vet who fought in the Pacific

http://tinyurl.com/n8hhrjp

The old man, described by a family member as "wobbly" on his feet, had refused medical attention. The paramedics were called. They brought in the Park Forest police.

First they tased him, but that didn't work. So they fired a shotgun, hitting him in the stomach with a bean-bag round. Wrana was struck with such force that he bled to death internally, according to the Cook County medical examiner.

"The Japanese military couldn't get him at the age he was touchable, in a uniform in the war. It took 70 years later for the Park Forest police to do the job," Wrana's family attorney, Nicholas Grapsas, a former prosecutor, said in an interview with me Thursday

The 95 old man made seven police officers fear for their lives by wielding a shoe horn and a cane. So they tased him and shot him with bean bags

Mr Wrana was suffering from a urinary tract infection which combined with his age probably made him delirious

But hey, Pops should have followed orders like he did as an Army Air Corps airman in the Pacific because those cops wanted to be able to make it home to pop a beer and catch the Cubbies on the tube.

492 Posted by: Slapweasel at October 24, 2013 02:48 AM (lq3Ak) Thank you Slapweasel. I am exhausted but have never spent a night in a hotel alone. They have free breakfast but I put DND on door. I just want to sleep. I like iced coffee in summer and either room temperature coffee when itÂ’s cold. It is cold here in ME, and IÂ’m glad I threw my sweatshirt jacket in the car @ last minute with sherpa lining. IÂ’m wearing it and when I got in bed I wasnÂ’t comfortable. I changed to other bed and took comforter from that one and have both. I am waiting for coffee to brew and going to sleep,or at least going to try. I took your post and pasted to word document. Thank all of you for your prayers since March 30. I am 90% sure I didnÂ’t say anything about it until we were discussing the Boston Marathon Bomber that lived and was on ventilator. I posted then what being on ventilator entails, how many drugs they have to use to keep them sedated enough to tolerate it. I think I posted it when Paul was having neck surgery. His neck surgery was April 18. I know that because I usually take week off but was only taking Tuesday and Wednesday. Then surgery was Thursday and I called my boss to tell him how infection was in cervical spine and it was very risky with large infection area. I refused to go to work that day. My boss is great, he knows I do NOT discuss things when IÂ’m upset. WeÂ’ve known each other for over 3- years and he can tell when I will or will not discuss things. He never pressed me or told the two other partners. If you hadnÂ’t read earlier weÂ’re renovating our office in stages, last stage is our area. They had no clue what to do w/us Friday.. I volunteered to work form home. Monday he told me I have no place to work Thursday or Friday. I had sent him an email that Paul was back in the hospital late Friday/early Saturday. Monday I told him I would go to ME today and be back Thursday. IÂ’ll send him one and tell him IÂ’m staying here through early Friday afternoon. I can do the work things over the weekend. Rose season is done, I have to spray unless there is a frost. It was below 38 degrees here tonight, Thank you, all, for prayers and blessings. Paul needs them. IÂ’m glad I came here and happy I live near Boston. This hotel is nice but I should have brought box of tissues from car but itÂ’s parked way on other side, not near my room. I have had two neck surgeries and they affect my hand strength, I carried too much too far tonight. Carol

Posted by: CarolT at October 24, 2013 03:08 AM (mp17o) My father had to go through that. He was given only a 10% chance of living. Thankfully, he beat the odds. I still remember when I had arrived that day at the hospital and they told me they had started to take him off of the morphine that was keeping him under and he was starting to respond (though not necessarily fully comprehending). I could squeeze his hand and he'd respond. It meant he was going to make it, and that he was going to be alright. I will never forget.

Thank you, The Political Hat and everyone else that has said prayers. I was trying to sleep but wasnÂ’t comfortable. I got up and switched beds and made coffee for tomorrow.

501 Slapweasel, the only thing IÂ’m going to get is a pedicure, I have been too weak to cut my toenails for nine years. If I do it, I have to wear wrist braces & hope the best. I donÂ’t want polish. I only want my feet done. Of all the places here, I picked one called The Senator! Many of them are booked from people here for foliage. I hate foliage. they must be from somewhere where it doesnÂ’t turn. When I called early Wednesday, I could stay in room one day. Someone must have canceled because when I checked in at 4:30 I was prepared to go to part with only 12 rooms. Others had bad reviews and complaints of smells in room & things not being clean. I just looked out the window, IÂ’m in room 102. There are still no parking spaces on this entire side. Tomorrow is cheaper than tonight for one reason or another. I think flights are cheaper during midweek for people that wanted to see the foliage. The Senator I am choosing to honor here is Ted Cruz. Most of the rest are worth nothing. I heard early this morning that McCain is thinking of running again! He should run as a dem because heÂ’s guilty of ReaganÂ’s 11th Commandment hundreds if not thousands of times.

502 The carcass is a stinking mass of oozing, rotting meat. I give it better odds against Hillary than anyone else. Posted by: CAC at October 24, 2013 01:32 AM (UZlRZ) I saw a large dead animal on the way back here from the hospital. I am 99% sure I missed running over it. It was shortly after 11 pm and there was no one on the road. I backed up a rotary thatÂ’s who quiet Augusta is. One of my cousinÂ’s cousin predicted if he moved here permanently heÂ’d end up losing his houses. He has two, one huge vacation home, now his primary residence in Augusta, with 7 bedrooms. Why would any divorced man with one teenager build such a large house? I have never been there, I almost went there but his cell is shut off and I heard heÂ’s having $ problems because he hasnÂ’t worked in months. In June he had it all planned for me to stay there. I know where extra key is. I planned on coming here last Thursday because Paul was dejected & sounded suicidal. I think it was all the infections he had again but they didnÂ’t know it until Friday night around 11 pm. Maybe my cousin should offer rooms to rent for the leafers or what ever they call them here.

Paul told me I had to go into Target parking lot next door to get to hotel, that seems more like a motel. But I can walk from the inside door to bar, ice machine, and restaurant. In my mind a hotel is one or two entrances and a parking lot. A Motel is where you park near your room. This is a combo. IÂ’m going to send three emails & try to sleep . Good Night and I hope God Blesses each and every one of us. Thank you, Carol

I gave up reading him a couple of years ago because the liberal section of his article kept getting more leftist.

Apparently there was a fan who was  near a mike, and he kept  yelling at Cardinals hitters, presumably when they were  at the on-deck circle.

This is why people hate Boston and the Red Sox.  The fans are complete jerks, and just looking at them in the stands, you can't help but root against the  team.

Leaving aside the  question of  whether you REALLY want John Freakin' Kerry, Liawatha, and Mumbles Manino to be out there celebrating, I can't think of one good reason why anyone would want the Red Sox to win this thing.

524 Michael Landsberry, 45, was shot to death by a student at the middle school where he worked. (The Associated Press via Nevada Air National Guard) This undated photo provided by Chandra Landsberry shows Sharon and Michael Landsberry. (AP) RENO, NEV. — Sparks Middle School math teacher Michael Landsberry became known as a hero when he tried to stop a student with a gun, but his commander and colleagues at the Nevada Air National Guard said that his life exemplified that hero status long before the school shooting. “Mike is a hero because he chose to serve his country as a Marine and as a Nevada Guardsman, but he was also a hero because he chose to serve his community in the most commendable way imaginable — as a teacher committed to the education of our youth,” Col. Jeffrey Burkett, Nevada Air Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing commander, said Tuesday during a news conference at the base in Reno. Landsberry, 45, had confronted the seventh-grade student outside the school Monday and tried to get him to put the gun down, but the boy shot Landsberry in the chest. He died at the scene. Burkett said Landsberry joined the Nevada Guard as an air transportation specialist after retiring from the Marine Corps in 1994. He was deployed overseas to Germany, Kuwait and Afghanistan. He was highly decorated, with more than 25 awards for his service, Burkett said. Landsberry’s fellow guardsmen recalled their lost comrade as a man who dedicated himself to giving to his family, his community, his students and his country. Chief Master Sgt. James Ross, who was deployed with Landsberry in Germany in 2004 and 2005, said he’ll miss his colleague, especially his sense of humor and ability to share his heart and dreams. “He liked to joke and talk,” Ross said. “He was a great guy. He was a great airman, a good friend, a fantastic husband and father.” Senior Master Sgt. Robert Garrett said many of the guardsmen who worked with Landsberry often teased him about being a former Marine. The guardsmen wore their uniforms loose and comfortable, and Landsberry “gave me a hard time for being a sergeant duffel bag,” Garrett said. They would poke fun at Landsberry for his strict Marine style. “He could never get the Marine out of him,” Garrett said. “We always gave him a hard time about the Semper Fi and ‘oorah.’ He’d stand up to it, but he always had the most honorable-type character.”

528 You say exclusive. TSA hears explosive. You go to jail. @ Liberty Bell in Philly Judge Anhalt said she would have convicted Balsas of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, but he wasn't charged with those offenses. Balsas, a Portuguese citizen, called it a misunderstanding, saying he told the TSA screener, "I have a bunch of exclusives" -- a literal translation of the Portuguese word for 'personal property.' "We were getting calls from all over the world. People thought it put the United States in poor light, like we were the old Soviet Union, locking people up without reason or evidence," Balsas' attorney, Allan Sagot told 3TV from his office in Philadelphia. He says his client is staying with family in Pennsylvania, and is "angry and frustrated" that he lost nine months of his life as the court process dragged. ASU Professor John Meunier flew to Philadelphia to act as a character witness at the trial. "My basic phrase was that he was an honorable gentleman," Meunier said. "This man was in the process of being destroyed. His career, his personal life, destroyed, and this should not happen," Meunier added.

I live about 40 miles from Baaaaah-stahn. I was hoping the Sox would lose in four games. But maybe for a reason those who don't see Boston-area teevee won't understand:

Yesterday, the new started off with the story of the murdered teacher in Danvers. Almost a full minute's worth. Then they segued straight into the friggin' Sox, and teh news-bimbos yammered on endlessly about that for, well, forever. They interviewed every drunken fan, every seller of overpriced Sox merchandise, yapped about "America's most beloved ballpark," yadda yadda yadda.

Hell, even their butterfly of a weather dude did his stand-up from Fenway Park.

I used to like baseball. No mas!

Question for the computer heavies here.  My computer has been acting very sluggish lately and I suspects spyware and Trojans despit the fact that I am running multiple blocking programs and I get zero hits from McAfee scans.  So I updated my MalwareBytes and did a scan.  Got 216 hits for malware, most of which were associated with a program called DTUpdate that appeared to have something to do with address tabs.

Does anyone know what this is and what impact it will have if I deleted all these things?

The story of that young teacher who was found dead in MA yesterday has come full circle.  The teen identified by that other web site I posted yesterday has admitted to punching her in the face and cutting her throat with a box cutter.  Aren't schools box cutter free zones?  Hell we are expelling students for bringing plastic butter knives now.  This is a tragic event, not just because that was beautiful young woman, but because two lives are now gone.  They have released the kid's name because he WILL be tried as an adult. But be that as it may, according to SCOTUS he is too young to get the death penalty.

He's one of the club boys which militant atheists clap for supposedly because he debunks Christianity and makes a lot of money doing so, Meh. His personality is more appealing that that of Richard Dawkins.,however. I will have to say this for him, though, He does get rid of the ridiculous nonsense promulgated by the Militant Atheists club that Jesus never existed. I have a limited life and limited amount of time . I want to build up my faith, I've read enough by Ehrman and Dawkins and one of the other Atheist club boy whose name escapes me now. When American and European scholars start dedunking the inerrancy of Islam (which "bolder toliet hobo" or which ever city he's from now :^) I might have more respect for them.

633 Far-Left House Dem Jared Polis Defects From Obamacare, Will Now Ask For A Waiver For Rich Liberals In His District Because Plans Are Too Expensive… Another kick in the balls for Obama. Via Fox News: One of President Obama’s most ardent liberal supporters has defected from ObamaCare. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, told a Colorado health policy think tank that ObamaCare premiums will be too expensive for some of the wealthiest addresses in America – ski resorts like Breckenridge and Keystone. He says he’s asking the feds to let them sit out the president’s national health system. “We will be encouraging a waiver,” Polis told Health Policy Solutions in a story that ran today. “It will be difficult for Summit County residents to become insured. For the vast majority, it’s too high a price to pay.” The resorts are in Summit County and Aspen is in a neighboring county, which Polis also represents. He has consistently voted in favor of ObamaCare. Polis also wrote to Colorado’s insurance commissioner asking why an average 40-year-old mountaintop resident would have to fork over $427.80 a month while counterparts in Denver would pay $296.41 for the same plan. NO. NO WAIVERS, NO DELAYS. You SOBs wanted it, voted for it, cheered it, and got it. Now CHOKE on it!

We may never know what it is, but it's there.

Yup.

Guess the morning thread has been deemed controversial, huh?

I thought maybe someone was having a hissy.

They made me clean my desk last night b/c our new corporate overlords are in the house today, and now I can't work.  Everything is grey, and all my scribbled notes about the variables are gone.

Shit, even prison would let me have a picture of my cat...

650 644 when Bark says "and the middle class" he is marking a target kids.

Barky is intent on targeting anyone who is not an inner-city black.  Maybe add Muzzies to that.  He has never got over being a community agitator and racist.

655 It's so good to see the big ace internet web log experiment thing is going strong and stronger during my absence. I have returned to ask a question. I know you will get the answer correct and quickly. If there has been a recent change to a website I incidentally don't own, and I don't have the previous version archived, is there a way to retrieve the previous version?

656 I truly sympathize with Dan Snyder on the Redskin name issue; I hope he sticks to his guns and does not bow to the pressure of these professional whiners. Several years ago, a new school board was elected in the county I grew up in. Leftists all, one of their first acts was to arbitrarily change the name of my HS's mascot from "Indians" to "The Storm". No warning, no "hey, we are going to change the name of your mascot, perhaps you students would like to have a contest to suggest alternative names" no nothing. I always think of a line from a Suicidal Tendencies song when I hear the machinations of these parasites- "Just because you don't understand what's going on, don't mean it don't make no sense/and just because you don't like it, don't mean it ain't no good".

667 ** Obama and his socialist agenda are not popular, but the nation has changed and this Religious Right nonsense needs to go if we want to beat them. They beat this drum everytime and there's always a Santorum or Akin conservative that answers the call. ** They're reactionaries rather than conservatives, but yes; you're spot-on here. The GOP needs to clean house, and these shitheads need to be disowned as soon as they pop up. Let's play whackamole.
