18 Can it really be true that the average woman in every country is really hot? Or is it just that you get symmetry by averaging?

I heard that someone started a dating service where you can't see the picture of who you're talking to, until you both agree.

Average dating service: many more men than women
This dating service: Sixteen to One, Women to Men.

The average picture of those women does not look like this.

93 As in not even remotely plausible. Also it's not something you can "average," you could take examples of common features as compared to others.

Actually it's been a well known result for years that if you take many face images and measure key features like eye width, cheekbones, ratio of width to height, width of mouth, nose length, etc, etc and use a computer to average them and generate a composite 'average' face, the result is always more attractive than any individual face. So a lot of 'beauty' is being supremely average. One theory is that perfect facial symmetry and average proportions are a sign of genetic and physical fitness.

141 I'm working on some examples of where republicans hold privacy in higher esteem and thought i'd see if anyone had some examples. Posted by: buzzsaw90 at October 24, 2013 10:30 PM (ytRt5) Hide posts from (ytRt5) The central issue there is that the Democrats are the Party of Government - so that when something like public cameras or government home inspections (as has come up with some welfare and health regulation changes recently) or vehicle tracking in every car (mileage taxes as in Oregon or other related issues), it's the left that's pushing it and the right (sometimes only the Libertarian right) opposing it. BUT on the left, they live in a bubble-world where propaganda is more important than reality, so the right wing are all Xtian Monsters who want cameras in your bedroom, thus against privacy. Ask them if when they say "privacy" they mean search and siezure, public surveillance, online behavior tracking, mileage monitoring and reporting.... or just sex. Being kind of on the Libertarian end of things I'm against nearly all of that, so there you go. Basically if you look at "surveillance states" they're on the left - but examples of what *Americans* would call "right wing" are rare in history, so there's no average to work with. Basically if you want a smaller and less powerful government it's going to be less intrusive, a bigger and more powerful government is going to be more intrusive, and a liberal politician (or for that matter a conservative) promising they won't intrude on you with big government basically means nothing.

164 Actually it's been a well known result for years that if you take many face images and measure key features like eye width, cheekbone position, ratio of width to height, width and aspect ratio of mouth, nose length, etc, etc and use a computer to average them and generate a composite 'average' face, the result is always more attractive than any individual face. So a lot of 'beauty' is being supremely average. One theory is that perfect facial symmetry and average proportions are a sign of genetic and physical fitness.

190 Yes, Mike we do sometimes spend lots of time here. I was wasting time yesterday morning here instead of getting ready to come to Maine because I thought my very expressive face would show horror at how bad my brother is. He doesnÂ’t look bad, his face looks good. ItÂ’s just his legs are useless and itÂ’s sad seeing him struggle to do things. Last night he wanted ribs so I went and picked them up. I didnÂ’t want to ask if he wanted me to cut them. I watched him struggle, plus we only had plastic which didnÂ’t help. He finally asked me to cut them. Today he wasnÂ’t feeling well and kept telling me to move the trash can and table with his things in it just so, so he could see that he hit the trash can and could reach what he wanted to. Then he was uncomfortable and had to ask nurses to reposition him. I left room so I didnÂ’t have to watch them.

210 lock down=dead? Posted by: Dan at October 24, 2013 11:01 PM (bFVET) It can go either way. They're trying to partition off the students from the shooter. Problem arises when they partition and the shooter can still gain access. Then it becomes fish in a barrel. The first school my wife taught at had, what I thought to be, a very nice design. Every class had a sturdy deadbolt for the door leading into the hallway. Every class had access to two single toile bathrooms on either side. Those doors could be locked with the typical handle lock from inside the bathroom or a deadbolt on the class room side. The idea was for the teachers to lock the doors to the hallways and then go room to room via the bathrooms to get their kids out. Unfortunately, they did have a individual come on campus with a gun once in the three years she taught there. My wife came almost face to face with him.

OK- here goes.

Many of you are familiar with the story of my F-I-L, missing and presumed dead for five years now (October 200 .  The likely culprit in his disappearance is an unregistered sex offender who went into hiding the same day Gramps disappeared and has not been located since, although there have been a couple of sightings.

My F-I-L never had much of an internet footprint, didn't do on-line shopping or banking or that sort of stuff.  He was on Social Security and did live in Section 8 housing, so his name and social security number were on file with the government. He never had a credit card, though he did have a bank account.

Lo and behold, this week, after 5 years of nothing, my wife's half-sister (my 0.5SIL?) gets a solicitation phone call from a credit company, asking for Gramps (by name) and saying that they had her phone number as contact number for a credit card account in the joint names of Gramps and his surviving wife (widow).  They would not give 0.5SIL any more information.

This seems like a case of identity theft five years after the fact, but we are wondering how you all might approach getting more information about this supposed credit card in Jack's name.  We have some ideas, but I'll see what you all think.  I can give a few more details if needed.

He has not been legally declared dead.  His widow is a Filipina, naturalized citizen who is drawing his Social Security checks still, she probably prefers to have him considered "missing" for financial reasons.   We have asked her to get a credit report, and my 0.5 SIL who works for a collections agency says that there is a more detailed credit report that can be obtained by lenders, so we are wondering if the widow should go to her bank and make the request through them. I don't know if this is true or not.

If itÂ’s identity theft, you should report it to the police. My older brother had a friend stay overnight in 1993 and she stayed 9.5 years. She must have used a pre approved credit card offer in our mail, took it and asked my mother for her SSN. I had never seen a bill until a few years ago when I started getting calls about my past due Spiegel Master Card. I told them I never had one and they insisted I go to police. Police acted as if it were a joke. But your FIL is a missing person. It might lead to something. No one ever found him?

An Irish Airman Foresees His Death

I know that I shall meet my fate

Somewhere among the clouds above;

Those that I fight I do not hate,

Those that I guard I do not love;

My country is Kiltartan Cross,

My countrymen Kiltartan's poor,

No likely end could bring them loss

Or leave them happier than before.

Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,

Nor public men, nor cheering crowds,

A lonely impulse of delight

Drove to this tumult in the clouds;

I balanced all, brought all to mind,

The years to come seemed waste of breath,

A waste of breath the years behind

In balance with this life, this death.

303 Seamus --

My initial take is that it sounds like a scam. Then again, about 85% of my contacts with other human beings initially sound like scams to me....including the devilish "Good morning!" and "Have a nice day!" scams.

Thinking about the timing a bit, I'm thinking that someone may have encountered your FIL's name in your state's "unclaimed property" listing.

The way this works is that inactive bank accounts (like small savings accounts not caught by heirs) are regularly reported by banks to state regulators. After some statutory number of years, the funds are "escheated" from the account and handed over to the state -- so that those bad, awful banks won't use it to run their bank more effectively when it could be used for the public good of locking deadbeat taxpayers out of state facilities when they don't bend over and spread their cheeks fast enough....

The theory also holds that, since the bank could go bankrupt and fold, the heirs would benefit by having the money at the state government, since the State is Eternal.

Anyway, the state will then turn around and publish a list in an obscure place saying something like "10/24/13, John Smith, $82.14, Boogaloo State Bank" -- which are perfect for scammers to get hold of, find John Smith's heirs, and say "we have discovered a fortune your Grandpappy set aside for you, but will need legal and finder's fees of $10,000 to get it for you!"

Unless there is an interstate aspect to it I do not believe they will get involved.  We'll work our way up the chain to that if we have to.  Previously even the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has refused to get actively  involved in the original missing person case.   One of our questions is if an identity theft will up the ante in any way and prompt more adept agencies to take part.

330 Sheesh! I suppose I have to do everything in this family. Those of you who read Gingy's poem before she locked it back up know that it was actually pretty good. For bad poetry, truly epically awful poetry...well, I'm your huckleberry. So, down to my office I go. To the filing cabinet, Batman! Let's see...Mortgage papers, deed, pink slips, bills, bills, bills....passports, birth certificates, baptismal records...cell phone bills from 1999? Why do I still have those? Ahh, now we're back to personal stuff. All my drawings from 7th grade mechanical drawing class (A+ average, bitches), Gilligan, The Professor and Ginger's autographs (From a 3 hour tour of the mall), letters from my grandmother? I should read those. Moving on: High school history papers ( Did the US victories at Coral Sea and Midway end Japanese plans for empire? The Virginia vs The Monitor, harbinger of the future. I got an A in that class, it should have been an O for ob-vi-ous), Passes for the advance screening of Real Genius (best movie of all time), Ah! Here it is, a folder marked "Poems and shit". Like the foot wide green and orange clip on tie I have upstairs, I keep this just because it's so awful, so I now present to you a poem I wrote as a teenager after my first serious girlfriend (we had sex!) dumped me. I notice that I failed to title this masterpiece at the time, now I can only dub it, in my best New York Coffee Talk Jewish accent "Ode to Oy!": Some women have said that men are quite low, disgusting, revolting, obnoxious and slow. I prefer to believe that the roles are reversed, men are the best, women the worst. A woman will take you for all you have got, they smile when you're there and snarl when you're not. They grab you and use you for pleasure and fun, take your money and heart and leave on the run. They take your respect your life and your soul, and leave you with nothing but bittersweet goals. They screw with your body and mess with your head, when they split like the wind you wish you were dead. So if life were a castle with rank and all that, the men would be kings the women, the rats. Chew on this: That's not even the worse one in there. *mike drop*

343 Many of you are familiar with the story of my F-I-L, missing and presumed dead for five years now (October 200.

Posted by: at October 24, 2013 11:13 PM

How sure can you be that gramps didn't have such a credit card? Was there a joint bank account? Setting up a joint credit account for someone who never had a credit card sounds odd. If it's the vanished suspect behind this, he's a bonehead. But, he doesn't sound like a bonehead.

Very near Fort Garland. He disappeared from property he owned about 8 miles from Ft. Garland in the Forbes ranches.  Remote road with a total of 4 full time residents- one of whom was a convicted sex offender living under an assumed name with a history of violence. The new link in my nick goes to the page on my blog that links to the Denver Post article from 2010 that summarizes the case nicely.

Heh.   As I described Jack in the book, he never took a long walk when a short walk would do, and he never took a short hike when a couch and a nap were available.

He was 78 years old, had vertigo, and was not an outdoorsman.

407 Posted by: Donna V. sez yay Cards at October 24, 2013 11:42 PM (R3gO3) IÂ’m sorry Donna, I was so preoccupied with my brother being sent to the ER last Friday that I posted it and another comment or two on the ONT. Saturday I read what you wrote about you losing twin sister at birth. IÂ’m sorry. IÂ’m in ME and visited him yesterday and planned to go home today. I decided to stay two nights. I wish I threw more clothes in the bag. If I did not need a new roof, I would stay again tomorrow, plus I donÂ’t want to have to deal with going on Route 1 south to home in MA on a Friday afternoon. TheyÂ’re doing construction/renovations in our office, my area is last one to be done. TheyÂ’ve stuck people on another floor in a conference room we rented, that didnÂ’t go over too week. Last week they stuck a bunch into what is our temporary conference room & that didnÂ’t work out well either. Friday I said I would work from home. Then one decided we could go to new spaces that weÂ’ve added. There was no place for me. IÂ’m supposed to be working from home. I told my boss that my brother was in the ICU for first time since April & I was going to ME Wednesday. I can work Saturday & Sunday. Paul needs someone that loves him to see him more than they need me to work right now. If I change my mind & stay another day, IÂ’ll have to go buy new underwear, etc. I packed bag in June and left it and updated in August, but I didnÂ’t come here either time. Yesterday I just threw in sweater for today & sweatshirt and took our summer clothes. Carol

Nothing to do with studies or science or anything, did some research but ultimately (as comments related suggest) arbitrarily selecting faces of people associated with countries. So while the faces are *cute* the project is not *meaningful* other than making composites of cute faces. That's all I'm saying.

tangonine is right, you do get some prediction abilities over time. The two things I've noticed are that if her beauty seems like a fragile flower, it will not last (see, for example, 16 year old hillbilly blondes). If it's really really distinctive in an odd intense way, then it probably won't last, like that chick with the intense eyes and cheekbones in the miniseries for The Stand, or that gingerish chick who was on Mission Impossible for a while. But I don't think that the prediction thing can ever be nearly as reliable as a good long look at Mom.

482 Apropos of nothing, here is a good article I saw earlier today, about the current state of private spaceflight projects. http://thespacereview.com/article/2387/1 This is why I'm very excited and optimistic about the future of space flight. There is a hell of a lot going on, mostly under the radar of the MSM. A few years from now, we'll wonder how we could have ever been so pessimistic.

I think in my class 40% of the chicks looked about the same, the other 60% reversed. The hot chicks were now chuds, and the chuds back then became hot.

484 Hubby had a white 'fro in HS (we were in the same class). Now sports a perfectly shaped bald head, which, unfortunately for me, is a chick magnet. He has olive skin, which looks really good bald. Yummy. When he did the reveal, to his mom, about 8 years ago, she expressed her distaste. I said, "I like it!." Her retort: " You would!".

497

Okay here's my weird ass story from today ... I got the strangest wrong number ever on my work cell.  Dude calls, I answer my regular "This is Joe" and he says (heavily accented) this is Richard (I think, my short term is fading badly), oddly familiar but with no request.  After a moment of awkward silence, having no clue who I was talking too, I said "what can I do for you?"  (it is not unusual for me to receive work calls from heavily accented folk with seemingly random requests) and he says (clearly ME accent at this point, but so heavy hard to understand) "This is activation" (I'm pretty sure, but not clear enough to be completely sure) so I say "What?" and he says "Are you ready for our special event in Times Square next week?" and I'm baffled at this point and say "I don't think you called the right person".  His response is "Is this Johan?" and I say "No, my name is Joseph [last name the first syllable of which is a homonym to second syllable of Johan]" and he gets all freaked out and nervous like "oh sorry I called the wrong person ha ha" and I'm like "yeah I get that sometimes" but he clearly didn't get the humor and hang up.

Immediately after I hung up the thought occurred to me "activation", "special event", "times square", heavy ME accent - false familiarity - holy crap this is exactly what I imagined a sleeper activation call would sound like.

So I call the number back, it was not blocked, and he answers, and I'm all like falsely familiar with him this time "Hey, hows it going" "whats going on" "I got a call from this number" and he says a couple times "did I just talk to you?" (clearly very nervous at this point) and eventually says "Is this (garbled version of my actual name)" and I say "Yeah, so whats the event you have planned" and he says "yes, Times Square, New York City" and I say again "what special event do you guys have planned?" and he says "um, uh, uh retail" and I say "retail?" and he goes "sorry sorry I call wrong person" ever more nervous and hangs up.

At this point I'm pretty freaked and thinking of calling the Feds.  I txt the number "Are you an (my employer) employee?  How did you get this number?" but I get invalid number message in return.  I google up the number and it shows land line, NYC, but can't get a hit (unlisted) - I even tried one of those search outfits, but I got back a note that they would get back to me a few days, so no hits.

I immediately thought I should report it somehow, but what if I'm just being a racist paranoid nutjob (def not the former, maybe tend to the latter) and would that be the reaction if I reported?

I've been freaked out by this all day since it would be difficult to live with myself if something happened next week in times square, but if it does, you heard it hear first .,..

499 Thematically, two years after moving to the Reno area, my brother made contact with a woman he'd last known in high school about 33 years ago in Thousand Oaks, where she still lives. He has a tendency to rush into things, such as his marriage, but he is already talking about moving back to our old childhood home town.

I have absolutely no recollection of her from back then, so cannot draw a comparison but she looks fairly nice for fifty-ish. Except for my two nephews and niece, my brother is the perfect candidate for a time machine intervention to prevent him from meeting the psycho he spent so many years with.

And after my little gremlins get all growed up they come around every now and then and I'm dead on:  the plain janes at 18, the hard workers not obsessed with their appearance?  They tend to be the more attractive of the bunch 10 years later on the female side.

Local police departments don't want to investigate these claims because they almost always end up being out of the locality, so there is no way for the locals to get the newspaper/local tv pictures of a big bust. So instead, the police department will send out 5 detectives to investigate who stole the coins from the QuikEWash instead of the guy who had someone steal his identity and run up 25K in fraud. Government drones are all about getting glory.

541 And after my little gremlins get all growed up they come around every now and then and I'm dead on: the plain janes at 18, the hard workers not obsessed with their appearance? They tend to be the more attractive of the bunch 10 years later on the female side. On the male side, shit we all look the same. every now and then some dude gets a crossfit thing and goes from fat to ripped but other than that not much difference. Posted by: tangonine at October 25, 2013 12:51 AM (x3YFz) There was one at my reunion who was cute back in high school, but not the type guys followed around drooling. 5 years later we hooked up one night while we were living in another city. 25 years later at the 30th reunion, OMG. She looked fantastic and very hot. MrsCaniac even commented on how attractive she was. But the common theme was that all of the women that had gotten more attractive as they aged was that they were all happy and smiling.

Joe if you have nothing to hide overtly (warrants, psych doc's, etc..), why not report it? Its not like you are reporting something against the regime, right?

As long as you have the calls logged in your phone that should be enough to prove you aren't just a crackpot (other than your time spent here).

I'd goto my locals and tell them "this shit is weird, what do you guys think?". After they deployed the tank and helicopter, locked down the schools, and strip searched me, they'd run it up to the feds, I think?

I did LASIK 10 years ago, as part of my "40th birthday clean-up-the-health-shit" campaign. My aunt had radial-K back in the day, which looks like thoracic surgery with stone implements compared to modern surgery when it's compared to LASIK, and I kept thinking that there might be a post-LASIK thing that was even a leap beyond the radial-K to LASIK leap.

Totally worth the money, time, risk, and trouble. I've gotten a glorious decade of natural sight....and now I'm working on presbyopia. Wish I'd don't the LASIK earlier.

True story -- when I was in my teens, right before college, we lived in a house out in the country. It was set up so that there were 3 bedrooms off a corridor in the back, and one bedroom (mine) in the front of the house.

Unknown to me, my parents set up this deal where the neighbor girl was supposed to come over to be babysat at like 7:30 am on a weekend, so her folks could run off to some event. So she knocks on the door at something like 7:10 and I get out of bed, put on a bathrobe, go to the front door, unbolt the deadbolt, open it, say "there's no-one awake here", shut the door in her face, set the deadbolt, go back to the bedroom, shuck the bathrobe, and get back in bed. I remember none of this, BTW.

What I do remember is getting woken up at 9:00 with alarms and running around and yelling because we'd misplaced someone we were supposed to be babysitting.

It's close enough to answering "no" when someone asks "is anybody home?" Sometimes it is believed.

There is a method to my madness.....I'm looking to leave the glorious state of California and relocate. Climate says it's likely to the South. So I've got my ears pricked about southern things that I wouldn't be prepared for with 50 years in CA.

As an example, you can get your car keyed anywhere -- just park in an urban area with a "Romney" bumper sticker. But the BH's first trip to set up a branch office in NC got her tires slashed in a hotel parking lot. SoS's saga involved tire-slashing. And the BH has a personnel issue in NC where tire-slashing is involved. Evidently, tire-slashing is more common in other states than I would have thought.....

As you may imagine, there are a lot of such things....from Black Ice to Water Moccasins to sweet tea to chiggers....and I know that I am totally, dangerously ignorant in dealing with 'em. So I'm trying to learn before I get there.

I spent far too much of my youth in -- if you'll excuse the expression -- a fucking desert. That's where the youngster pic was snapped, BTW -- a place that hit 127 while I was driving that same vinyl-seated car (the record in the US is only 134). I know that they're always talking about "a dry heat", but I have been there and done that.

In the snakes department, we've got rattlesnakes up the yazoo. I don't know much about coral snakes or water moccasins, but they're not as dense on the ground as rattlesnakes are here.

688 So here's something for all you tech wienies. I have an Acer Aspire 5610Z with Windoze Vista on it. For some reason a couple of years ago it decided to just shut off as if you had dropped the battery and pulled the plug on it. A system restore back to the point before the service packs were installed fixed it for a little while, but after a few months it did it again. It got to the point where I was having to restore it every month or so, so I reloaded Vista on it and it was OK for a while. Well, it's doing it again and this time I get maybe 24 hours out of it. Tech support has been...less than helpful.

So yesterday I went and got a new 500GB hard drive and Windoze 7. I am not going to put any of my old files on the new computer (I have everything I wanted to keep backed up to my removable hard drive anyway). We'll see how this goes.

Extended warranty
