The dialogue and plotting are crisp. All the characters, including the villains, are likeable. The villains, notably, are likeable in a way that makes you respect their choices and the consequences thereof, which is a difficult balance to maintain. When recurring villains bite the dust, you end up thinking, "Yep; I'll miss having you around, but that's how it had to end."
Nick Searcy's Art Mullen is that curmudgeonly but cool and wise boss we'd all like to work for, and Timothy Olyphant's Raylan Givens is like if Michael Biehn and Billy Bob Thornton had a kid together. If you can imagine that and think, yeah, that's sort of cool, this series is a must-watch. If not, watch it anyway and Olyphant will make a believer out of you.

I met my senator tonight at the gas station. I smiled and informed him that he was not "my" senator after he told me he was. I was not rude, of course; I informed him I'm a foreign national, and that my husband voted republican. He told me lots of republicans vote for him. Ok then.

Is fried zucchini good or bad for you? I had an argument with a relative about this recently. Our argument basically went as follows:
Me: "It must be good for you, it's zucchini."
Her: "But it's fried."
"But it's zucchini."
"But it's fried."
"But it's ZUCCHINI!!!"
"But it's FRIED!!!1!"
Ad infinito...

Now suitable pantsed, I head out to find a cop in my driveway, shining his maglight around. Thinking quickly, I tried to remember what my last post was at the HQ -- FAIL.
So I wander over to ask him what's going on. He tells me to hang on, then heads down the ditch along my property, swinging that light back and forth. Finally, he gets back near to where I am and he asks if I've heard anything unusual. Where's a lawyer when you really need one.
Nope, sez I. He says he's looking for shell casings. He had a report of two cars stopping at my address, people getting out, and firing off about 40 rounds.
I NEVER get invited to the cool parties. Nah, I tell him, it just couldn't have happened. I can hear my neighbor across the street close his truck door when he gets home, unless I'm watching a video or movie. Which I haven't this pm. It's real quiet here.
So he says he doesn't believe it either, but he had to check it out.
That's all, folks.

Being called racist is nothing to me especially since the 2008 election - but - how do you defend to neighbors who have lived in this area their entire lives and know nothing different .. how do you say to them - get past the person who cheated and lied and voting for them because they look like you?
I asked my boyfriend to at least go talk to the couple across the street before he put up our sign. He did not and now my neighbors look at me like I am a member of the KKK. So sick of this stuff .. thought we were suppose to be done with this after TFG was elected.
How can they want to re-elect a person who was guilty of cheating? Do they just push it back on W for the leave no child behind stuff? idk .. don't know enough about it, I guess.

Officially, no. But the rule was ignored by everyone. We'd walk right into the stadium with them in our hands.
The reason for the rules now about when you can and can't ring are because of the whiny asses at Auburn, specifically Shug Jordan, crying about them. So if they are rung during "unauthorized" portions of the game, State gets fined for use of artificial noisemakers. The fact that Tennessee (and I suspect a few others) amps the crowd noise through the stadium PA is conveniently ignored.
How did you end up at State from Seattle? Golfer?

I've generally found it best to stay in the good graces of the 'ettes.
Reminds me of:
Traffic Math
I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver, who cut right in front of a pick-up truck, causing the driver to drive onto the shoulder to avoid hitting her. This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm out is window and gave the woman the finger.
"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic, And here's why:
I drive 48 miles each way every day to work.
That's 96 miles each day.
Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.
Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway.
There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles.
That works out to 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.
Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper, I figure I pass at least another 4000 cars.
That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.
Statistically, females drive half of these. That's 18,000 women drivers!
In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS. That's 642.
According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding. That's 449.
According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide. That's 98.
And 34% describe men as their biggest problem. That's 33.
According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons and this number is increasing.
That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.
Give her the finger? I don't think so...

Reflect that if the indictments hadn't come down, Kwame Kilpatrick would still probably be the Mayor of Detroit.
And, really, the indictments having issued wasn't reflective of any disinterested, objective search for justice and for probity in public office. It was just intraparty infighting over the division of spoils in a de facto single-party city being run by looters in suits.
If Kilpatrick had been a bit more forthcoming about letting others shoulder in to the trough, the case probably would never even have gotten to the grand jury.

Yes. I get that and it makes my head spin .. Marion Barry. I am not naive and think that my neighbors are going to invite us over to bbq next weekend. Maybe they may think they are getting us back by selling their houses for more than they could have before we moved in and paid a chunk for this property. Probably, they will say they were forced out of their neighborhood. At this point, I just give the fuck up. Is it wrong that I hope the one apartment place at the end of the block that has a bunch of cars coming and going all day gets bought and is a tear-down?
I know this is a dialogue that people get sick of talking about and especially on ont ... it is just that it is reality in more places than most realize. I keep a mossberg 500 in - idk what its called when you have it so all you have to do is put the shells in and pump - along with my security system. But, I am alone a bunch. My boyfriends son came over the other day (who wears a "this is what a feminist looks like t-shirt and goes to school at Dartmouth - sorry to Dartmouth people here)t and looked with disgust at my shotgun and said "would you really shoot someone". This is where I am glad my son was raised by his father near the swamps of Wakalla County, Florida. John Boat, Frying Pan, old baby jar with grease, blanket, shotgun, knife, some fishing line and hook, flashlight ... the pussification of America is led by TFG or idk the assjerks that came before him.
Getting to the point where I just want to put my range poster on the front of my house and say .. try. I am 56. Been through most of the phases of racial everything and I just DEMAND to know from TFG .. what has changed? and I want him to give the fucking Noble Peace Prize back.
Assjerks.
To another point - has anyone even thought about the failed website of TFG might be, in addition to its many problems, being attacked from other countries? may Iran has had a sudden need to find out if they qualify for subsidies from TFGcare.

You'll probably want to look at USB tuners, and powered USB hub to get signals in. That board is not designed to be a power source for peripherals.
I'm the type that always recommends the most hardware you budget can stretch to, which with raspi boards is still pretty damn cheap. I just think it saves upgrading later when the software gets bloated. Might not, but that's what I think.
As for which kit to get for the board itself, well, how comfortable are you loading an OS?

Lots of grads from State that have gone on to great things in business, like Hartley Peavey (quick trivia fact, his son had the PO Box there as me, right before I had it), Fred Carl (Viking Ranges), and Janet Marie Smith, the architect that did the work on Camden Yards, Fenway, and Turner Field.

Probably because you are more of a gun purist. It is good for me because I can use the revolver grip thing (yes, I am not using right gun language) and it is easy for me to load. I have a flashlight thing on it and laser but if I thought someone was coming up the stairs I probably would just start shooting holes in the walls. At the range it does not kick me like some of my sons other guns so it is okay for me because I am not a big person.
I hope I never have the need to use it at my house. Some people say that just the sound of a shotgun pumping makes intruders run but others say the only sound an intruder should hear is the second round pumping.
Who knows. I was kidnapped once by just the threat of a little 22 to my head - driven around until they decided I didn't have any money on me (junkies) and then pushed out of the car. Today, it would take a lot to make me shoot someone but I would ... then probably be up before a grand jury even if self-defense. Fear is a strong thing.
My son, on the other hand, is probably like you - he bought out the last AK47 in the shop when some (another) scare came about last year or so about guns. He has a safe full and is not a crazy person. He just feels he has a right to have them and loves to go to the range and also hunts.
The plus of his getting pissed about the 2nd Amendment threat is that he is finally thinking TFG and his crew needs to go. Sometimes it takes different things for different people. Hopefully, enough will come around.

They have. They call it "mandatory volunteer service". The idea they keep trying to float is that all 18yo should do two years either military or civilian service. The military gets filled with conscripts who don't want to be there, while the civilian "volunteers" get farmed out at slave wages to progressive groups.

Because the right mostly has the live and let live attitude, most don't give a shit what people do for a good time. The left on the other hand gets off on fucking with you. They need to fuck with your cars, the wood in your guitars, your idea of art, your idea of enjoying the outdoors, your food, etc. Nothing is sacred to them, nothing. I appreciated that translation.
Being raised in a previous millenium, my first rhetorical thought was, what able man, with danger before him, does not put himself between danger and a woman?
Then I thought about that scene in Heinlein's Love is Not Enough where the couple is settled 'way out in the wilderness, and creeps come by. When they show their intentions, it's the man and the dog who are in the light, face-to-face with the creeps. The woman with the long rifle is aiming through the door, from the hidden darkness of the next room.
Because, you know, maybe not side by side, but man and woman is a partnership, after all.

Oooh nice. I don't usually follow PRS, so I'm not sure how many different semi hollow ones they make, but I played one a few years back that was really nice. It was roughly les paul size, had a wicked flame top and I "think" the back was also flame maple. I remember it being basically 2 solid pieces of wood that was machined out hollow with a section left uncut to form this wood like pillar under the bridge area. It was done in a violin amber color. Was really cool.
I haven't bought any guitars for a month or so, I'm back in amp mode for awhile. I do have one of the gibson government flying V's coming whenever they decide to build the frigging thing. They are saying november, so we'll see. I ordered it in april.

This is a Semi-Holow, no sound holes.
It's Redwood over Mahogany. It has a deeper body than a standard Custom 24. Mahogany Neck and a flat sawn Rosewood Fretboard w/ Bird Inlays.

My guess is around $2500-3000 cheaper. The graphics are stupid money because they are usually one of a kind, so you pay for the art. The downside is the resale is bad because graphics aren't that transferable. meaning that the next guy most likely won't give a shit about your choice in graphics. I have a custom shop jackson soloist thats painted up like a B17 bomber, and its a one of a kind. It was $4500, but I only paid $1500, because the friend who bought it owned it a month and just couldn't sell it, so he gave it to me for what a regular non graphic soloist would cost at the time. He basically gave it to me for what most people offered him.

Yeah he seemed really pro open relationships, group marriages, polygamy, polyandry. I think those only work in critical economic circumstances, and with a set hierarchy. Even then envy, jealousy, are real human emotions, they can't be contained just ask a prog.

There's a lot in Heinlein to value competence, adaptability, humor, honor, independence, and long-term effort.....and then there's a bunch of stuff he threw at the walls to dress a story. Starship Troopers has the military service for voting thing, the Free Love is in a bunch, hiding a movement as a religion is in a few, some have secret societies....

Actually, there is a small truth to that, but pretty small. A good player will always sound like himself on just about anything, but there is a huge world of a difference between a good guitar and a cheap one.

Because a great guitar can make you sound better and actually allow for faster improvement. The dude you took lessons from sounded good, because he was already good. A great guitar may not make you Hendrix overnight, but it will be a big help. A shitty guitar is going to be a long uphill battle.

Right, it could be said that a new set of Calloways, or a sweet PRS, or a fancy Nikon, or a Mitsubishi Evo, might help you hit the ball straighter, or sound better, or produce better photographs, or be faster around the cones, but it could also be said that those things are masking your deficiencies and preventing you from mastering fundamentals at a beginner level. A novice is still a novice and an expert is still an expert and expensive equipment doesn't change that - I think some people trying to become proficient in a skill go big on equipment early thinking that it might. Those effects, I guess, could most likely be felt at the intermediate levels, where the limitations of your equipment could be holding you back.

His almost crazy stupid love for Springsteen (I appreciate separating musicians from politics but this is extreme) - Sharia creep is a huge factor in my decision on who to vote for in the next election. Classical guitars are tough. I actually build them, and I learned how to build them because I didn't want to spend 10K on a grand concert classical, but I did need one. I was already playing 30 years at the time, so I was way, way developed, but no matter what I did I could NOT get the tone out of store bought classicals that I would hear other players get from the uber good guitars. After some years of learning how to build them it was pretty easy to see why. They may look alike, but they are nothing alike. The good ones are built with an entirely different approach and attitude. My very first one, an 1864 Torres copy, killed anything I ever bought out of a store. It was easily twice as loud and had the tone from hell. I went through a dozen store bought ones and out grew them before the strings needed changing. Being an electric guitar player that was quite a different world from what I was used to.

Not quite. First, if an axe has deficiencies a beginner can't improve because they can't figure out why what they are trying doesn't work. For example, maybe the frets buzz cuz the axe is shit rather than the technique is bad.
Second, if a person buys a quality (not highest quality, just good quality-still affordable not nutso bux) instrument used, that person can use it for years and sell it for as much or more than they paid for it (yes, even with inflation).
Third, the whole process involves a commitment of a kind. Buying crap gear does not instill that commitment, and when your gear is letting you down it is not a joy to play. Joy -- you play more. Struggle -- you play less.
Fourth, your tone is also your inspiration. I would still not be Stanley Clarke if I played his rig, but the quality of his tone would lead me to some very nice surprises that would inspire better music while I explored those sounds.

Sooo, it seems that collector car prices are directly related to the nostalgia trips of middle aged men. This may be readily apparent. The early boomers had their fin-ny specials like tri five Chevys and such, and then the late boomers spiked the muscle cars unbelievably a while back. Right now, as I predicted and failed to act upon, the Porches and BMWs of the Eighties are through the roof. Next will be good unmolested examples of '90s Japanese tuner cars. The NSX is already rising at a high rate.

Ok where to start.
First off, the top is everything. Torres, who is basically the founder of the classical guitar as we know it, in the 1800's built a guitar with a spruce top, but with a paper mache body just to prove the top is everything. The type of spruce, how many lines per inch, the thickness, how its thicknessed, etc, all matter.
A store bought classical usually has a top thats somewhat decent, but never master grade, but they run it through a thickness sander set at a standard thickness, usually around 2.5-3mm so its cookie cutter. Some tops may need to be at a different thickness to release its ultimate tone, so its a crapshoot what the guitar sounds like if you just pick a standard thickness and go at it. Also, the top is whatever thickness they decide all across the top. Not the case with the better ones. Torres thinned his top around the perimeter, sometimes as thin as 1.4 mm with it being around 2mm in the center. He got the top to act like a diaphram, or basically like a speaker cone. The guitar has much more volume that way. He also had a dome shape to his top with the peak of the dome under the bridge. This made the top a lot stronger which means you can make it thinner and lighter.
Then you have the bracing, the bracing pattern, the weight of the bracing, etc. thats a whole conversation in itself. There are usually 2 cross braces, one in the front of the sound hole, and one at the rear of the sound hole. Torres scooped out an area on each side of the rear cross brace so it only contacted the area in the very center and on the ends of the top, that left the top unrestricted to vibrate even more. Some builders still do that. The ramerez 1A uses one of the brace arches to this day.
Then you have the glues, the best shit is hide glue, period. It transfers tone way better, and its not used in store bought guitars.
The finish, the best ones are french polished. the finish is very light and don't weight the top down and dampen the vibrations like lacquer or poly does.
The fingerboard is shaped different. On the good ones its thicker on the treble side and slants down slightly on the bass side to give the bass strings more room to vibrate.
and on and on

It's even more fundamental. Insurance is a bet -- you bet that something catastrophic is going to happen to you and you'll need a shit-ton of money to recover, and the insurer bets that it will either not happen to you or that you can recover on less than you think.
Years ago, when I was the Controller of some companies, there were folks going around and saying that prepaid legal was the next cool fringe benefit to attract employees. You saw ads for them everywhere....and then they all went bust and you hardly hear about it anymore. Why? Because prepaid legal is attractive to people who habitually sue others for spurious reasons.
And, finally -- nobody walks into a hotel any more and asks for a room -- because "rack rates" are $259/night where expedia can get you one for $69, AAA will have it at $79, Orbitz will have it at $75, and there's a coupon in a magazine for $80.
Now combine all of that into one big mess and it's healthcare. The "rack rate" for most common surgeries is at least 5x the price anyone actually pays, which forces you to be in a prepaid medical plan whose costs are wildly inflated lest you be bankrupted. In the meantime, there's no motivation for individuals to deal rationally with their problems because the system is so skewed.

The guy could hear wood like nobody I have ever seen. Watching him select the woods for a guitar was incredible. He had a knack for knowing which pieces of wood wanted to be together. It was amazing.

It is sublime stuff.
I once bought a bass at a shop in NYC. I had a pal with me, the great Ray Brown.
I played a bunch of them and narrowed my purchase down to 3 basses.
To me they sounded very different.
Ray came over and played them and they all sounded the same, as in, great.

Wife plays the cello, I diddle with the violin (horribly). Perhaps you could give us some pointers in the future.
She gets pissed when I start explaining nodes and wavelengths and harmonics. I come at it from the mathematical/physicist side and she says I'm stealing the magic. I contend I'm explaining the magic. Then we duel with bowstrings.

Actually, there is one pretty cheap classical out there thats impressive for the price. Its a cordoba, I think its called the Imbera series. Its made in china, not really happy about that seeing I have a spanish built cordaba and hate seeing the name go to shit, but the china one was designed by kenny hill, and I think he trained the dudes. The interesting thing he does on those is to add what they call a sloped treble bar brace on the treble side. It tightens up the treble side of the top and makes the trebles louder. Its about $300 new, and it was so good for the money I bought one as a beater for less than ideal conditions so I don't risk one of mine that takes 200 hours to build. They play nice, have cedar tops, and have a pretty good overall tone. probably the best $300 classical I saw in a while. After that price point there are better options.

approach in attitude? Is it selection of materials, architecture,
craftsmanship, etc.?
Posted by: cthulhu at October 30, 2013 01:27 AM (T1005)
On the good ones its thicker on the treble side and slants down slightly on the bass side to give the bass strings more room to vibrate.and on and on

And, just to keep me out of the barrel, .

Thats a pain in the ass. I fix violins too every once in a while. That sound post is right up there with ball surgery. I can't play them, but I get suckered into fixing them for people I know who do. I did a restoration on an 1800's german violin that I thought would be the death of me. I had to rebuild corners, do cheek patches, remove the top, fix a crack, etc. Came out great, but damn it was nerve racking.

Ray was sort of the antithesis of the way the argument is going on this thread. He could pick up any bass and make it sound fantastic.
I'm pretty sure all great musicians are that way. They have their own voice.
I have spent a lot of time with some pretty famous pros as they work through a pile of guitars that they are considering. They always sound like themselves. Humbuckers, single coils, different amps. Doesn't matter.

This is almost the exact same philosophy that Robert Fripp (the legendary guitarist, ex-King Crimson, Bowie, Eno, Talking Heads, etc.) subscribes to: it's not the instrument as much as it is the instrumentalist. It's all about 'leaning in' to the contours of whatever you have to work with. I once attended a guitar 'seminar' held by Fripp (he liked to teach back in the day) where he demonstrated the point by playing everything from ultra-expensive, tricked-out electric guitars to plastic Korean-made acoustics and coaxing the most beautiful sound imaginable out of each and every one of them. He was trying to prove the point that, while having good gear is important, you can't let it become an excuse for holding your technique or inspiration back. Pretty amazing lesson.

Good question, I really don't know. I do know yamaha makes a pretty damn good acoustic for the money. I got the wife an FG730S that is a great sounding and playing guitar that was around $300. There was nothing remotely close to it at that price. I would think they make a 12 string.

It wasn't an insult. But your reply (I can make a plywood cello sound amazing) makes the point.
There's a point at which the skill of the musician overwhelms deficiencies in the materiel. Not to say that a fine instrument can, in the right hands, become almost ethereal. I sat 10 feet away from Joshua Bell so I've seen it, heard it, and it was amazing.

A good, particularly a good old, tele or LP will cost you an arm and a leg. If you like tele's, and only communist don't, I recommend the Squire telecaster. There's a particular make that is better, but, alas, I can't recall what production. In any event, for the $$$ you pay, which isn't much 2nd hand, you get a pretty fucking decent telecaster. Not quite as easy to play as the regular ones, but still fine with a good sound.

Hadn't thought about the Squier option. Back when I originally became interested in guitars, Squiers didn't have all that great a reputation -- say, around the mid-to-late 80's. But, I have been reading good things about them on the 'net tonight.

Tall order. A good les paul is pricey. Gibson does make some entry level ones that are no frills that you can probably find for $500 used, but they have a minimal finish on them. The upside is gibson only has one level of hardware and electrics and its used on everything from cheapest to most expensive, so anything you get will have good stuff. You DO want to stay with stuff made in the 90's up to the mid 2000's, because in the last few years they started doing really stupid shit with their wiring. The pots are mounted to a circuit board and the pickups literally plug into the board. It can all be retro fitted to the traditional style, but its better to stay away from that if possible to keep the costs down. There are some nice teles out there cheap, but you aren't doing metal with those unless you do a pickup swap. There are a ton of different amps out there. If you want to cover a lot of ground cheap you might want to look into a modeling amp, you can get a decent one for $2-300. Vox seems to make a nice one that has an actual tube preamp, and there is line 6. The modeling amps have a ton of onboard effects. I generally would stay away from "starter" combos since most is overseas junk.

I can't give you particularly good advice for economy LP's... Epiphone, perhaps? I've heard decent work with those, but haven't played one. The gibson guys can probably steer you in the right direction for a les paul econmy/copy.
As for Squiers. They're actually pretty fucking good. For the price, anyway. I've no complaints about them. In fact, I've played Squiers that were as good as, if not better than, actual modern Fender classic reissues. They were always pretty good, but back during the period you're talking about, 60's and 70's teles were easier to come by and cheaper, even for the time. So, Squiers looked poor in such company. They're economy fenders, but, they'll do the job and I suspect may actually possess the slimmest margin of quality between a economy model/copy and the original, that I've come across. For the $$$...
...They rock.

Not a poor me post, bear with me here. We all have to deal with this shit.
In the vein of the discussion of music we've had here tonight; I deal with it by taking 10 minutes a week and put in my earphones and click play on Joshua Bell's O mio babbino caro.
When I do it, I turn off my brain. I don't think. I just listen to every note.
Is what it is. Of course one of my parrots invariably interrupts me by landing on my head and asking for a peanut, but that's ok.

For the time being, I'm really looking for versatility. But, if I ever get around to a "shredder" (for which I'll first have to learn to shred), I'll go for something that looks more the part, like an Explorer body style, or something like a Schecter.

Actually no. The strats seem to be priced around the same. If you look on ebay the bastards are asking more for the tele it seems, but thats ebay. My cheapest highway 1 was $430 used, and the most expensive was $600 because it was limited edition one. A few were $500. The prices do vary because some assholes think they got the golden key to the crapper, but they can be had for $500.

I've had people try to talk me out of it, and I'm like, "dude -- it's a phobia; I know it's irrational!"
I generally don't breathe during the stick. This freaks some lab techs out, but I've had decades of untreated sleep apnea and did SCUBA and free diving as a hobby -- my blood O2 level can explore the north 40 and take a detour for some scenery before it's a problem.....and even if there were a problem, it's best if they get the necessary sample before waking me.

I've driven it already (to the auto parts store) with the door disassembled and the part extracted. It's going to be a pain-in-the-ass getting the new widget back in there, but I know the drill.

I figure I'll stumble upon a hell of a deal soon enough. Probably right after I get a fairly decent deal and jump on it.

That'd be about the going price for one 2nd hand. Not a bad deal though. Won't beat an old SG, but... for only $400, who's complaining?

DamnedDirtyRino, are you anywhere near Houston? I've been thinking about it and I don't really use that Strat/Line 6 rig. I have a lot of gear. I would be willing to loan it to you and if you like it I'll throw in a tweed case (Road Runner I think), old school Fender strap and a cord and still get you in under your budget. The Strat is black and I put a black scratch plate on it. Good looking guitar. Anything for the Horde....

otho, Sly Stone says different strokes for different folks.
I buzz a lot of notes on a Strat that I hit clean on the LP. That Alan Haynes guy I told you about plays finger style on a Strat and I have no idea how he does it.

Just reading a book can be a bummer if you can't stop your brain from looking at it wrong. I tried starting a Neil Gaiman novel tonight, 'The Ocean At The End of the Lane.' Early on the narrator mentions that nobody came to his seventh birthday party, as the first hint he didn't fit in as a child. I found that devastating. The one bright spot is that his parents present him with a kitten that he becomes deeply attached to but it is killed a month later by a taxi delivering a new lodger to his parents' home.
I understand these traumas were needed to create the setting for the events that followed but I felt I'd gone through the emotional wringer just a few pages in. Nobody was marched off to a concentration camp or endured a horrible medical condition but still, it can be rough going if the reader is feeling vulnerable.
Worse, when it comes to non-fiction, I cannot avert my eyes from the truth of unpleasant matters. It's like trying to ignore one of Monty's DOOM posts.
Work helps. Knowing there is another paycheck coming and just exerting oneself to some useful effect that tires one enough to go to sleep because you need it rather than boredom.

That would be one hell of a nice rig to have, though.
The Horde is a hell of a great bunch.
