38 I've been watching Justified recently based on Ace's recommendation, as well as the fact that one of the regulars (Nick Searcy) is a fellow Moron, and I'm impressed with the show. It's really good!

The dialogue and plotting are crisp. All the characters, including the villains, are likeable. The villains, notably, are likeable in a way that makes you respect their choices and the consequences thereof, which is a difficult balance to maintain. When recurring villains bite the dust, you end up thinking, "Yep; I'll miss having you around, but that's how it had to end."

Nick Searcy's Art Mullen is that curmudgeonly but cool and wise boss we'd all like to work for, and Timothy Olyphant's Raylan Givens is like if Michael Biehn and Billy Bob Thornton had a kid together. If you can imagine that and think, yeah, that's sort of cool, this series is a must-watch. If not, watch it anyway and Olyphant will make a believer out of you.

52 I was reading in a previous thread about some feeble-minded columnist who was surprised that someone as brilliant as the Bamster could be so incompetent. Then I read some stuff by Anne Coulter listing a number of Democratic politicians who failed becauseÂ…brilliant! They're simply too smart to be understand. Maybe they fail because they're idiots. I had an English professor who insisted upon simple, English to communicate even the most complex ideas. Anybody who can tell me--in simple English--what variable valve intelligent technology means--is intelligent. The person who explains it in bafflegab is not intelligent, he might be arrogant, but intelligent, no way! I've always thought the ability to relate and communicate was a sign of intelligent, but evidently not with Democrats.

110 I have a story. I was sitting here in my office, peacefully minding my own business (pantless, of course) and reading the HQ when I saw a moving light outside. Could have been the sun, but I didn't think so.....not at 8pm.

Now suitable pantsed, I head out to find a cop in my driveway, shining his maglight around. Thinking quickly, I tried to remember what my last post was at the HQ -- FAIL.

128 I just want to ask this ... where I live there is an election coming up.  There are seats for school districts ... it is in Atlanta.  My neighbor has a sign up to re-elect a person who was knee .. no neck deep ... in the school score cheating scandal.  We have a sign on our lawn for a person who is running as a new person (white female and very qualified IMO) to the school board.  Because our neighborhood is mixed and in the process, I think, of gentrification (hipsters moving and gwoks) it appears we are seen as racists.

Being called racist is nothing to me especially since the 2008 election - but - how do you defend to neighbors who have lived in this area their entire lives and know nothing different .. how do you say to them - get past the person who cheated and lied and voting for them because they look like you?

I asked my boyfriend to at least go talk to the couple across the street before he put up our sign.  He did not and now my neighbors look at me like I am a member of the KKK.  So sick of this stuff .. thought we were suppose to be done with this after TFG was elected.

How can they want to re-elect a person who was guilty of cheating? Do they just push it back on W for the leave no child behind stuff? idk .. don't know enough about it, I guess.

Officially, no.  But the rule was ignored by everyone.  We'd walk right into the stadium with them in our hands.

The reason for the rules now about when you can and can't ring are because of the whiny asses at Auburn, specifically Shug Jordan, crying about them.  So if they are rung during "unauthorized" portions of the game, State gets fined for use of artificial noisemakers.  The fact that Tennessee (and I suspect a few others) amps the crowd noise through the stadium PA is conveniently ignored.

How did you end up at State from Seattle?  Golfer?

I've generally found it best to stay in the good graces of the 'ettes.

Reminds me of:

Traffic Math

I was riding to work yesterday when I observed a female driver, who cut right in front of a pick-up truck, causing the driver to drive onto the shoulder to avoid hitting her. This evidently angered the driver enough that he hung his arm out is window and gave the woman the finger.

"Man, that guy is stupid," I thought to myself. I ALWAYS smile nicely and wave in a sheepish manner whenever a female does anything to me in traffic, And here's why:

I drive 48 miles each way every day to work.

That's 96 miles each day.

Of these, 16 miles each way is bumper-to-bumper.

Most of the bumper-to-bumper is on an 8 lane highway.

There are 7 cars every 40 feet for 32 miles.

That works out to 982 cars every mile, or 31,424 cars.

Even though the rest of the 32 miles is not bumper-to-bumper, I figure I pass at least another 4000 cars.

That brings the number to something like 36,000 cars that I pass every day.

Statistically, females drive half of these. That's 18,000 women drivers!

In any given group of females, 1 in 28 has PMS. That's 642.

According to Cosmopolitan, 70% describe their love life as dissatisfying or unrewarding. That's 449.

According to the National Institute of Health, 22% of all females have seriously considered suicide or homicide. That's 98.

And 34% describe men as their biggest problem. That's 33.

According to the National Rifle Association, 5% of all females carry weapons and this number is increasing.

That means that EVERY SINGLE DAY, I drive past at least one female that has a lousy love life, thinks men are her biggest problem, has seriously considered suicide or homicide, has PMS, and is armed.

Give her the finger? I don't think so...

Reflect that if the indictments hadn't come down, Kwame Kilpatrick would still probably be the Mayor of Detroit.

And, really, the indictments having issued wasn't reflective of any disinterested, objective search for justice and for probity in public office. It was just intraparty infighting over the division of spoils in a de facto single-party city being run by looters in suits.

If Kilpatrick had been a bit more forthcoming about letting others shoulder in to the trough, the case probably would never even have gotten to the grand jury.

Went to the brand-new Applebee's (complete with a BIG picture of the Dos Equis "most interesting man in the world" guy) in Signal Hill, sat at the bar and had some there. Yum.

Yes.  I get that and it makes my head spin .. Marion Barry.  I am not naive and think that my neighbors are going to invite us over to bbq next weekend.  Maybe they may think they are getting us back by selling their houses for more than they could have before we moved in and paid a chunk for this property.  Probably, they will say they were forced out of their neighborhood.  At this point, I just give the fuck up.  Is it wrong that I hope the one apartment place at the end of the block that has a bunch of cars coming and going all day gets bought and is a tear-down?

I know this is a dialogue that people get sick of talking about and especially on ont ... it is just that it is reality in more places than most realize.  I keep a mossberg 500 in - idk what its called when you have it so all you have to do is put the shells in and pump - along with my security system.  But, I am alone a bunch.  My boyfriends son came over the other day (who wears a "this is what a feminist looks like t-shirt and goes to school at Dartmouth - sorry to Dartmouth people here)t and looked with disgust at my shotgun and said "would you really shoot someone".  This is where I am glad my son was raised by his father near the swamps of Wakalla County, Florida.  John Boat, Frying Pan, old baby jar with grease, blanket, shotgun, knife, some fishing line and hook, flashlight ... the pussification of America is led by TFG or idk the assjerks that came before him.

Getting to the point where I just want to put my range poster on the front of my house and say .. try.  I am 56.  Been through most of the phases of racial everything and I just DEMAND to know from TFG .. what has changed? and I want him to give the fucking Noble Peace Prize back.

Assjerks.

To another point - has anyone even thought about the failed website of TFG might be, in addition to its many problems, being attacked from other countries? may Iran has had a sudden need to find out if they qualify for subsidies from TFGcare.

You'll probably want to look at USB tuners, and powered USB hub to get signals in.  That board is not designed to be  a power source for peripherals.

I'm the type that always recommends the most hardware you budget can stretch to, which with raspi boards is still pretty damn cheap.  I just think it saves upgrading later when the software gets bloated.  Might not, but that's what I think.

FDR in WWII put in place wage controls to evade that govt program companies started giving benefits. Then the govt made them before tax but didn't give that option to the public. Then state and fed made minimum coverages. Now we have all that stupidity on steroids.

If they didn't punish savings (count the ways) we all could self insure with a catastrophic plan. At a reasonable cost.

328 In the end all our problems with healthcare insurance have been driven by the govt. Obamacare has just kicked in the warp drives. Posted by: The Hickster I think the state-run oversight was a gift from Congress prior to FDR but for everything else, yep! The Left loves them some 'commerce clause' unless it's insurance.

It's a great school and great community.  It's also vastly underrated.  Lots of grads from State that have gone on to great things in business, like Hartley Peavey (quick trivia fact, his son had the PO Box there as me, right before I had it), Fred Carl (Viking Ranges), and Janet Marie Smith, the architect that did the work on Camden Yards, Fenway, and Turner Field.

Maybe more up your alley, the tail section for the F4 Phantom was designed by grad students at State.

342 Opening up the combat arms career fields for women will result in a new array of job-specific physical standards that will apply to both men and women, the Pentagon’s top personnel and readiness official said Tuesday. “You, as the man or woman, need to carry your load. So when we develop the standard, the standard is not just going to be for the females. The standard is going to be the standard,” said Jessica Wright, acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. Wright is overseeing the process of opening up all military jobs to women by 2016, including more than 200,000 billets that make up the core of the ground-level combat forces in the Army and Marine Corps. The four services are developing a new set of job-specific physical standards. She said military officials are consulting with fitness experts, occupational therapists and other medical and health professionals to ensure that the emerging physical standard will be based on “science” rather than “opinion.” ???? So up to know they have just been winging it? And we're suppose to believe they are not going to "lower" the standards? Give me a break

Not just who you are or what religion you come from or the color of your skin but your thought process, how you grew up, what you can add to the greater good because of your background.” ??? Probably because you are more of a gun purist.  It is good for me because I can use the revolver grip thing (yes, I am not using right gun language) and it is easy for me to load.  I have a flashlight thing on it and laser but if I thought someone was coming up the stairs I probably would just start shooting holes in the walls.  At the range it does not kick me like some of my sons other guns so it is okay for me because I am not a big person.

I hope I never have the need to use it at my house.  Some people say that just the sound of a shotgun pumping makes intruders run but others say the only sound an intruder should hear is the second round pumping.

Who knows.  I was kidnapped once by just the threat of a little 22 to my head - driven around until they decided I didn't have any money on me (junkies) and then pushed out of the car.  Today, it would take a lot to make me shoot someone but I would ... then probably be up before a grand jury even if self-defense.  Fear is a strong thing.

My son, on the other hand, is probably like you - he bought out the last AK47 in the shop when some (another) scare came about last year or so about guns.  He has a safe full and is not a crazy person.  He just feels he has a right to have them and loves to go to the range and also hunts.

The plus of his getting pissed about the 2nd Amendment threat is that he is finally thinking TFG and his crew needs to go.  Sometimes it takes different things for different people.  Hopefully, enough will come around.

Plus, any criticism of them or of the changes will result in leadership being crucified. -Colorado Alex I appreciated that translation. Being raised in a previous millenium, my first rhetorical thought was, what able man, with danger before him, does not put himself between danger and a woman? Then I thought about that scene in Heinlein's Love is Not Enough where the couple is settled 'way out in the wilderness, and creeps come by. When they show their intentions, it's the man and the dog who are in the light, face-to-face with the creeps. The woman with the long rifle is aiming through the door, from the hidden darkness of the next room. Because, you know, maybe not side by side, but man and woman is a partnership, after all.

They have.  They call it "mandatory volunteer service".  The idea they keep trying to float is that all 18yo should do two years either military or civilian service.  The military gets filled with conscripts who don't want to be there, while the civilian "volunteers" get farmed out at slave wages to progressive groups.

Yes they do. There is nothing they won't fuck up because they get off on it. You know why the right don't fight like they do? Because the right mostly has the live and let live attitude, most don't give a shit what people do for a good time. The left on the other hand gets off on fucking with you. They need to fuck with your cars, the wood in your guitars, your idea of art, your idea of enjoying the outdoors, your food, etc. Nothing is sacred to them, nothing. 455 Country Singer, I never said it was a good or realistic solution, lol.  I think it has a role - I would mount a .50 on it and machine the top as a baseplate, and make it a battery charger/water buffalo.  But the rucks of gear hanging on there are your dry panties and teddy bears, the basic load will not be on that.  The reason this might force a return to larger squad sizes is they realistically, they are the only near term solution.  You'll have to spread the weight out to a larger pool of people.

458 Tyler Cowen's predictions for Obamacare ---- 1. The chance of “no smooth resolution” for the health care exchanges crisis is now 60-40. Not long ago I thought it was 20-80. 2. The Obama administration is claiming the exchanges might be ready soon to stem Democratic defections and to keep the policy locked in, but in reality they now know there is no chance for timeliness (NB: this sentence is true with 60-40 probability, not unconditionally true). 3. More parts of the thing will be working by late November, but not enough for it to serve as a functioning enrollment system, much less encourage “the invincibles” to sign up. They will figure, correctly, they don’t have to bother with the whole thing until they hear from peers, and from the media, that the process is as smooth and as easy as Orbitz. (Oddly, Tea Party attempts to get young people to resist the mandate have the counterintuitive property of increasing awareness of the sign up requirement. Disengagement, not fiery opposition, is the real enemy of the law.) 4. Come January 1, hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose their individual coverage packages for not meeting ACA standards. Most of them won’t have ready replacements. This will be a big mainstream media story, not just a FoxNews story. There will be easily identifiable victims, expressing sorrow or rage or both in front of the camera. Left-wing bloggers will express outrage that Republicans express outrage over the existence of individuals with no insurance coverage. Republicans will express outrage that left-wing bloggers express outrage, etc. 5. Democrats will propose various ACA fixes, and Republicans will reject them, claiming that the law requires a more fundamental restructuring. That standoff will not be readily resolved and it will become the “new debt-ceiling crisis.” Democratic defections will be a problem for Obama. 6. The exchanges will be mostly working by March 2014, but by then the risk pool will be dysfunctional. In the meantime, real net prices will creep up, if only through implicit rationing and restrictions on provider networks. The Obama administration will attempt to address this problem — unsuccessfully — through additional regulation. 7. By October 2014, no one will think the exchanges are a satisfactory solution, except for 17 state exchanges which will be running reasonably well. Some of the state-level exchanges, by the way, will have more serious problems than is currently evident, mostly on the back end. 8. Chris Christie will campaign against ACA and beat Hillary Clinton in the general election. Upon assuming office he will place price controls on the insurance plans in the individual market, repeal much but not all of the federal financial support for the Medicaid expansion, and keep many other parts of ACA, while claiming to have repealed the whole thing. Enough Democrats will go along with this, as public opinion will have shifted toward the Republican side on this issue. The individual market still won’t be working very well. The exchanges will be working fine in the technical sense, but skittishness, political risk, and the adverse selection death spiral will have led the insurance companies to withhold high quality policies from that side of the market.

Was really cool.

483 We had biological males compete and win in the last Olympics. Wasn't there a South African or Jamaican chick that was a dude? She/he was androgen insensitive. In her case it wasn't willful cheating. Androgen insensitves don't know they are biologically male, XY chromosomes. They just never develop male genitals. Often they don't find out till puberty comes and they never menstruate and go to the doctor to find out why. If there family is uneducated they might never know. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at October 30, 2013 12:34 AM (ZPrif) Now that is an authentic case where a persons gender/biological sex is not straight forward. The left use medical anomalies like that to "prove" that male=man and female=woman is somehow completely false and thus gender is just a social construct. It is that manichean logic that they base their idiocy on. It is just like how some straight couples can't have children is used as proof that two men or two women are no different than a man and a woman when it comes to making babies. Watch out for it and be prepared to retort if you ever argue with a rabid Leftist on one of their brainwashed minions.

The one you are thinking of is a Hollow Body II, Bers.

This is a Semi-Holow, no sound holes.

It's Redwood over Mahogany.  It has a deeper body than a standard Custom 24.  Mahogany Neck and a flat sawn Rosewood Fretboard w/ Bird Inlays.

I have always had a soft spot for this model.  It's the only non-trem model they made before 1994 or so.

My guess is around $2500-3000 cheaper. The graphics are stupid money because they are usually one of a kind, so you pay for the art. The downside is the resale is bad because graphics aren't that transferable. meaning that the next guy most likely won't give a shit about your choice in graphics. I have a custom shop jackson soloist thats painted up like a B17 bomber, and its a one of a kind. It was $4500, but I only paid $1500, because the friend who bought it owned it a month and just couldn't sell it, so he gave it to me for what a regular non graphic soloist would cost at the time. He basically gave it to me for what most people offered him.

Right, it could be said that a new set of Calloways, or a sweet PRS, or a fancy Nikon, or a Mitsubishi Evo, might help you hit the ball straighter, or sound better, or produce better photographs, or be faster around the cones, but it could also be said that those things are masking your deficiencies and preventing you from mastering fundamentals at a beginner level.  A novice is still a novice and an expert is still an expert and expensive equipment doesn't change that - I think some people trying to become proficient in a skill go big on equipment early thinking that it might.  Those effects, I guess, could most likely be felt at the intermediate levels, where the limitations of your equipment could be holding you back.

Classical guitars are tough. I actually build them, and I learned how to build them because I didn't want to spend 10K on a grand concert classical, but I did need one. I was already playing 30 years at the time, so I was way, way developed, but no matter what I did I could NOT get the tone out of store bought classicals that I would hear other players get from the uber good guitars. After some years of learning how to build them it was pretty easy to see why. They may look alike, but they are nothing alike. The good ones are built with an entirely different approach and attitude. My very first one, an 1864 Torres copy, killed anything I ever bought out of a store. It was easily twice as loud and had the tone from hell. I went through a dozen store bought ones and out grew them before the strings needed changing. Being an electric guitar player that was quite a different world from what I was used to.

Posted by: Joe at October 30, 2013 01:19 AM (/oZbq)

======

Not quite.  First, if an axe has deficiencies a beginner can't improve because they can't figure out why what they are trying doesn't work.  For example, maybe the frets buzz cuz the axe is shit rather than the technique is bad.

Second, if a person buys a quality (not highest quality, just good quality-still affordable not nutso bux) instrument used, that person can use it for years and sell it for as much or more than they paid for it (yes, even with inflation).

Third, the whole process involves a commitment of a kind.  Buying crap gear does not instill that commitment, and when your gear is letting you down it is not a joy to play.  Joy -- you play more.  Struggle -- you play less.

Fourth, your tone is also your inspiration.  I would still not be Stanley Clarke if I played his rig, but the quality of his tone would lead me to some very nice surprises that would inspire better music while I explored those sounds.

Sooo, it seems that collector car prices are directly related to the nostalgia trips of middle aged men.  This may be readily apparent.  The early boomers had their fin-ny specials like tri five Chevys and such, and then the late boomers spiked the muscle cars unbelievably a while back.  Right now, as I predicted and failed to act upon, the Porches and BMWs of the Eighties are through the roof.  Next will be good unmolested examples of '90s Japanese tuner cars.  The NSX is already rising at a high rate.

Ok where to start.

First off, the top is everything. Torres, who is basically the founder of the classical guitar as we know it, in the 1800's built a guitar with a spruce top, but with a paper mache body just to prove the top is everything. The type of spruce, how many lines per inch, the thickness, how its thicknessed, etc, all matter.

A store bought classical usually has a top thats somewhat decent, but never master grade, but they run it through a thickness sander set at a standard thickness, usually around 2.5-3mm so its cookie cutter. Some tops may need to be at a different thickness to release its ultimate tone, so its a crapshoot what the guitar sounds like if you just pick a standard thickness and go at it. Also, the top is whatever thickness they decide all across the top. Not the case with the better ones. Torres thinned his top around the perimeter, sometimes as thin as 1.4 mm with it being around 2mm in the center. He got the top to act like a diaphram, or basically like a speaker cone. The guitar has much more volume that way. He also had a dome shape to his top with the peak of the dome under the bridge. This made the top a lot stronger which means you can make it thinner and lighter.

Then you have the bracing, the bracing pattern, the weight of the bracing, etc. thats a whole conversation in itself. There are usually 2 cross braces, one in the front of the sound hole, and one at the rear of the sound hole. Torres scooped out an area on each side of the rear cross brace so it only contacted the area in the very center and on the ends of the top, that left the top unrestricted to vibrate even more. Some builders still do that. The ramerez 1A uses one of the brace arches to this day.

Then you have the glues, the best shit is hide glue, period. It transfers tone way better, and its not used in store bought guitars.

The finish, the best ones are french polished. the finish is very light and don't weight the top down and dampen the vibrations like lacquer or poly does.

The fingerboard is shaped different. On the good ones its thicker on the treble side and slants down slightly on the bass side to give the bass strings more room to vibrate.

and on and on

Posted by: Jeff B. at October 29, 2013 10:01 PM (n/+FT)

589 I'll play too. The top of a cello is constructed out of spruce as well, with the grain running lengthwise on the instrument. We use spruce because the darker layers of the grain are 8-9 times stronger than the lighter layers, and we use that orientation because we want the top to vibrate (oscillate) side-to-side under the strings as easily as possible while still being strong enough to hold up the lengthwise arching of the top. So what we are looking for is large expanses of wood without knots, with very straight grain, and with very thin growth rings (light-dark alternations), because that gives us the optimum balance of north-south strength and east-west flexibility. Then, because every piece of wood is different, we shape the outer surface of the top and then selectively thin it underneath until it has the vibrational characteristics you are looking for. The guy who made my cello said he tries to get to the point where, if he pushes down anywhere on the arching of the unattached top, the whole thing depresses as a unit. So it is really a remarkably individual process.

And if your doctor is high quality (read -- already rich) they will get sick of the shit and quit.

Posted by: jc at October 30, 2013 01:41 AM (PlzOe)

It's even more fundamental. Insurance is a bet -- you bet that something catastrophic is going to happen to you and you'll need a shit-ton of money to recover, and the insurer bets that it will either not happen to you or that you can recover on less than you think.

Years ago, when I was the Controller of some companies, there were folks going around and saying that prepaid legal was the next cool fringe benefit to attract employees. You saw ads for them everywhere....and then they all went bust and you hardly hear about it anymore. Why? Because prepaid legal is attractive to people who habitually sue others for spurious reasons.

And, finally -- nobody walks into a hotel any more and asks for a room -- because "rack rates" are $259/night where expedia can get you one for $69, AAA will have it at $79, Orbitz will have it at $75, and there's a coupon in a magazine for $80.

Now combine all of that into one big mess and it's healthcare. The "rack rate" for most common surgeries is at least 5x the price anyone actually pays, which forces you to be in a prepaid medical plan whose costs are wildly inflated lest you be bankrupted. In the meantime, there's no motivation for individuals to deal rationally with their problems because the system is so skewed.

I do some woodworking, but I don't have the blade skills these guys do. I prefer power tools. The one luthier craft I have pretty well mastered is the art of setting up violin family instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass), which involves making tiny adjustments to the positioning of the bridge (and soundpost), which are held in place only by string tension, in order to optimize sound production. I learned because my cello is very picky, and because I couldn't stand not knowing. 8-)

611 Enjoying the discussion of classical guitar construction. We acoustic bassists go through a lot of the same issues. Or any violinist, for that matter.

It is sublime stuff.

I once bought a bass at a shop in NYC. I had a pal with me, the great Ray Brown.

I played a bunch of them and narrowed my purchase down to 3 basses.

To me they sounded very different.

Ray came over and played them and they all sounded the same, as in, great.

Wife plays the cello, I diddle with the violin (horribly).  Perhaps you could give us some pointers in the future.

She gets pissed when I start explaining nodes and wavelengths and harmonics.  I come at it from the mathematical/physicist side and she says I'm stealing the magic.  I contend I'm explaining the magic.  Then we duel with bowstrings.

Actually, there is one pretty cheap classical out there thats impressive for the price. Its a cordoba, I think its called the Imbera series. Its made in china, not really happy about that seeing I have a spanish built cordaba and hate seeing the name go to shit, but the china one was designed by kenny hill, and I think he trained the dudes. The interesting thing he does on those is to add what they call a sloped treble bar brace on the treble side. It tightens up the treble side of the top and makes the trebles louder. Its about $300 new, and it was so good for the money I bought one as a beater for less than ideal conditions so I don't risk one of mine that takes 200 hours to build. They play nice, have cedar tops, and have a pretty good overall tone. probably the best $300 classical I saw in a while. After that price point there are better options.

Is that good or bad?  (rhetorical, with no correct answer)

As it happens, I am also reasonably mathematically fluent, have studied the kinesthetic aspects of body control and bad physical habits, and have gotten pretty deeply into cognitive science (why are habits of motion internally invisible?), so I can talk about cello playing from a number of exotic angles, and put them all in english. 619 569 Can you give an example of the difference in
approach in attitude? Is it selection of materials, architecture,
craftsmanship, etc.?

Posted by: cthulhu at October 30, 2013 01:27 AM (T1005)

On the good ones its thicker on the treble side and slants down slightly on the bass side to give the bass strings more room to vibrate.and on and on

629 The one luthier craft I have pretty well mastered is the art of setting up violin family instruments (violin, viola, cello, bass), which involves making tiny adjustments to the positioning of the bridge (and soundpost), which are held in place only by string tension, in order to optimize sound production. I learned because my cello is very picky, and because I couldn't stand not knowing. 8-)

Posted by: Piercello at October 30, 2013 02:12 AM (P4dpU)

Thats a pain in the ass. I fix violins too every once in a while. That sound post is right up there with ball surgery. I can't play them, but I get suckered into fixing them for people I know who do. I did a restoration on an 1800's german violin that I thought would be the death of me. I had to rebuild corners, do cheek patches, remove the top, fix a crack, etc. Came out great, but damn it was nerve racking.

635 How does a great performer overwhelm an instrument? Think of the instrument as something like an airplane, with complexly interrelated performance envelopes (or, if you are that sort of physicist, as an n-dimensional phase space). Each instrument is unique, but will also partake of broad family resemblances. The great performer not only has developed an intuitive feel for the family performance envelope (NOT "instinctive," but that is a different conversation, this one can be taught), but he has also acquired sufficient sensitivity that he can both "feel" which part of the envelope contains the sound he wants, and achieve controlled "flight" within that part of the envelope, even it is out near the bleeding edge. I can make a plywood cello sound amazing, even if it is hard work, because I know the characteristics of the envelope. But I can usually make a quality instrument sound much better.

This is almost the exact same philosophy that Robert Fripp (the legendary guitarist, ex-King Crimson, Bowie, Eno, Talking Heads, etc.) subscribes to: it's not the instrument as much as it is the instrumentalist.   It's all about 'leaning in' to the contours of whatever you have to work with.  I once attended a guitar 'seminar' held by Fripp (he liked to teach back in the day) where he demonstrated the point by playing everything from ultra-expensive, tricked-out electric guitars to plastic Korean-made acoustics and coaxing the most beautiful sound imaginable out of each and every one of them.  He was trying to prove the point that, while having good gear is important, you can't let it become an excuse for holding your technique or inspiration back.  Pretty amazing lesson.

642 Main thing is, it is almost impossible to develop a feel for the technical envelope without access to decent stuff. In college, while waiting for a bow rehair job in a shop, I once learned more about proper bow technique in about ten minutes than I had in the last three semesters by just messing around with the stuff they had in stock.

Posted by: Piercello at October 30, 2013 02:33 AM (P4dpU)

It wasn't an insult.  But your reply (I can make a plywood cello sound amazing) makes the point.

There's a point at which the skill of the musician overwhelms deficiencies in the materiel.  Not to say that a fine instrument can, in the right hands, become almost ethereal.  I sat 10 feet away from Joshua Bell so I've seen it, heard it, and it was amazing.

I might argue that this is because pianos are so vanilla in the first place -- when you have one that is technically deficient, it's really bad.

649 What a coincidence. I've spent the past couple of hours looking around the web for a potential electric guitar and small amp. I've just recently started playing again on an acoustic and am thinking about adding an electric. I'd like to find a decent, versatile guitar and something to play it through. It doesn't have to be a world-beater, or anything -- just something that will play well after a good setup, and that I could use for anything from metal to country.

I'd like to have a nice Telecaster or Les Paul (the guitar I've wanted since I was in my early teens) though they're outside my reach right now. I have seen a couple of used Les Pauls in local classifieds that give me a little hope, though.

Anybody got any suggestions for something that would be a good, affordable starter electric/amp combo that I could plausibly use to play just about anything? I'd like something around the $500, or less if possible.

650 I once read a (possibly apocryphal) concert review that began with a substandard piano, escalated to massive equipment malfunction (I think one of the legs fell off), and ended with the infuriated pianist returning to the stage with a backstage fire axe to administer the coup de grace. And yes, on the other end, a great instrument in the hands of a great player is otherworldly. I sat ten feet _behind_ Josh Bell for a concert once (Tchaikovsky violin concerto), and it was like the instrument wasn't even related to the rest of the violins on stage. Amazing.

A good, particularly a good old, tele or LP will cost you an arm and a leg. If you like tele's, and only communist don't, I recommend the Squire telecaster. There's a particular make that is better, but, alas, I can't recall what production. In any event, for the $$$ you pay, which isn't much 2nd hand, you get a pretty fucking decent telecaster. Not quite as easy to play as the regular ones, but still fine with a good sound.

Tall order. A good les paul is pricey. Gibson does make some entry level ones that are no frills that you can probably find for $500 used, but they have a minimal finish on them. The upside is gibson only has one level of hardware and electrics and its used on everything from cheapest to most expensive, so anything you get will have good stuff. You DO want to stay with stuff made in the 90's up to the mid 2000's, because in the last few years they started doing really stupid shit with their wiring. The pots are mounted to a circuit board and the pickups literally plug into the board. It can all be retro fitted to the traditional style, but its better to stay away from that if possible to keep the costs down. There are some nice teles out there cheap, but you aren't doing metal with those unless you do a pickup swap. There are a ton of different amps out there. If you want to cover a lot of ground cheap you might want to look into a modeling amp, you can get a decent one for $2-300. Vox seems to make a nice one that has an actual tube preamp, and there is line 6. The modeling amps have a ton of onboard effects. I generally would stay away from "starter" combos since most is overseas junk.

I can't give you particularly good advice for economy LP's... Epiphone, perhaps? I've heard decent work with those, but haven't played one. The gibson guys can probably steer you in the right direction for a les paul econmy/copy.

As for Squiers. They're actually pretty fucking good. For the price, anyway. I've no complaints about them. In fact, I've played Squiers that were as good as, if not better than, actual modern Fender classic reissues. They were always pretty good, but back during the period you're talking about, 60's and 70's teles were easier to come by and cheaper, even for the time. So, Squiers looked poor in such company. They're economy fenders, but, they'll do the job and I suspect may actually possess the slimmest margin of quality between a economy model/copy and the original, that I've come across. For the $$$...

...They rock.

666 After all the shit that's gone down over the last 12 years.  Losing Glen, Shannon, Chris, Mike, Richard... the bullshit of having to tolerate non-stop nonsense from the whitehouse, and just the usual day to day of dogs you love dying, brothers dying, cars breaking down... You have to often re-center.

Not a poor me post, bear with me here.  We all have to deal with this shit.

In the vein of the discussion of music we've had here tonight; I deal with it by taking 10 minutes a week and put in my earphones and click play on Joshua Bell's O mio babbino caro.

When I do it, I turn off my brain.  I don't think.  I just listen to every note.

Is what it is.  Of course one of my parrots invariably interrupts me by landing on my head and asking for a peanut, but that's ok.

667 And, now, for something completely different --

The power door lock on my '94 Honda Accord wagon has recently started making a grinding gear noise when I lock the driver's door. I paid about $300 to have a similar problem fixed a while back, but I'm feeling cheap these days....so I found a video online (http://tinyurl.com/mlf58r2) and went to town. Got the old part extracted and can get a replacement at Pep Boys for $75. Getting the new part attached is for tomorrow after 11 am (part was in Union City and the bay area truck cycles about then).

668 If you want an ass kicking deal on an american made tele, look for a used highway 1 tele. I see them in the $500 range used and are really nice. They have a satin finish with a thin nitro lacquer finish. They have a nice vibe about them.

669  @ 661 [Berserker] -- Yeah, I don't expect I'll be getting a good Les Paul or Tele anytime in the near future. But, I do like certain qualities about both of them -- both the twang of the Tele, and the low end of the Les Paul. I've been eying Epiphones and wondering how cheaply I might be able to find a used one in a stroke of good luck.

Essentially, I'm looking for bang-for-the-buck and versatility. New or gently used. I'll definitely look into the Vox amps. That sounds like something I could get a lot out of.

Thanks!

685 A day like today I really hate my defective brain. A lot about my life sucks but I have a roof over my head and I'm not missing any meals. At least not yet.

But the despair just laid my out flat today. If I could sleep around the clock I would have. Instead, I spent much of the day lying in darkness wishing I could just switch my mind off. Although I hate that I've never had anything like a long term significant other, at times like this I have to be glad I'm not a burden on any kids. I read about people who went through terrible suffering and loss but endured to reach some goal or just not be a parasite and I feel like I've failed utterly in being a functional person.

There is my bit of cheer for the day.

(and don't even say porn will too but we all know it does but its crazy addictive and not healthy in large doses)

Sleep until you wake up with the light coming into your room naturally.  I get SAD really bad and it takes real effort to get past it in winter.  At least you are aware - don't be hard on yourself.

Get a Halloween costume (or make one) and give out candy on Halloween .  sounds stupid but kids make you laugh - they don't get caught up in mind shit.  Remember what made you happy when you were a child - your brain doesn't know time it will be where you think you are in your mind.  Oh, and hypnosis - Mckenna is pretty mainstream.  It does work.

Actually no. The strats seem to be priced around the same. If you look on ebay the bastards are asking more for the tele it seems, but thats ebay. My cheapest highway 1 was $430 used, and the most expensive was $600 because it was limited edition one. A few were $500.  The prices do vary because some assholes think they got the golden key to the crapper, but they can be had for $500.

725 Yeah, one of my big problems is trying to find anything that gives me enjoyment anymore. Some of the stuff I have is collecting dust because I feel guilty about using if I'm not seeing any steady work. It's been months since I just sat down and played a video game for a while. I enjoyed it but it makes me feel self-conscious if anyone knows I'm playing when bills are looming on the horizon.

Just reading a book can be a bummer if you can't stop your brain from looking at it wrong. I tried starting a Neil Gaiman novel tonight, 'The Ocean At The End of the Lane.' Early on the narrator mentions that nobody came to his seventh birthday party, as the first hint he didn't fit in as a child. I found that devastating. The one bright spot is that his parents present him with a kitten that he becomes deeply attached to but it is killed a month later by a taxi delivering a new lodger to his parents' home.

I understand these traumas were needed to create the setting for the events that followed but I felt I'd gone through the emotional wringer just a few pages in. Nobody was marched off to a concentration camp or endured a horrible medical condition but still, it can be rough going if the reader is feeling vulnerable.

Worse, when it comes to non-fiction, I cannot avert my eyes from the truth of unpleasant matters. It's like trying to ignore one of Monty's DOOM posts.

Work helps. Knowing there is another paycheck coming and just exerting oneself to some useful effect that tires one enough to go to sleep because you need it rather than boredom.
