Day 3 of the Government Slowdown: Things Begin to Escalate A Bit
Mr. Fall 2013, you ain't all that. We've had quite a few government shutdowns before and so far you aren't even average yet.
The frequency with which America has previously reached this point betrays another inconvenient truth: the willingness to shut down the federal Leviathan is by no means limited to the advocates of small government. As my colleague Andrew Stiles notes today, during the supposedly bipartisan wonder years of Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill - which are typically rolled out by revisionists to demonstrate what can happen if we all just "work together" - the government shut down no fewer than eight times, mostly at O'Neill's insistence. Likewise, during Bill Clinton's eight years in office, which are fondly remembered as a time of solid economic growth and bipartisan achievement, the government was sent home twice - on both occasions after Clinton rejected the budget.
Overall, the statistics might surprise: Of the 17 shutdowns in America's history, Democrats controlled the House during 15 and had charge of both chambers during eight. Five shutdowns happened under unified government! This makes sense. Government shutdowns are caused by legitimate and welcome disagreement between equal branches. They are certainly more likely to happen in divided government, but it is not a prerequisite.

As an FYI - Adobe got rooted. 3 million user names, passwords and credit cards stolen. Some of the info may be encrypted, but I wouldn't count on that.
The usual hack drill is strongly recommended, especially is you reuse passwords.
On the upside, free credit checks for a year.

There's a bunch of preconfigured HOSTS files out on the tubes that get updated regularly with new ad-zap/malware/pornado site entries.
This is one modest example:

There are others that are more extensive focusing on ads or known attack sites.
The nice thing about a hosts file is that its passive and used by the system's native TCP/IP to do the filtering (which means it applies to ALL the connections on the machine, not just browser specific add-ons). No added executable gorp-ware layers to slow things down.

Most often its used to "black hole" the bad shit you don't want, but that same mechanism can be used to REMAP a web site to someplace other than the black hole too.
If some clown like to surf pron or watch cat videos while your work load keeps increasing, a hosts file could be used to remap their fav pron site to say John Deere farm equipment, or remap YouTube to the Russian embassy in Portugal's site.

c) worse yet the "savings" are time limited or have to be accumulated withing a certain time frame or you lose all the "savings".

The hoplon was the shield a hoplite carried. In classical Greece it worked the man who was wealthy enough to afford a piece of equipment like that had more weight in government. Those who could not do that were either the rowers on a trireme or were the light infantry; and the l.i. were supposed to scout, or open up gaps in the ranks of the hoplites, or were supposed to get the heck out of the way when the guys in the heavy armor started fighting.
Thinking about it, better to get a good helmet and do the slinger/archer thing because there was a lot less to throw away when it came down to running. And if you did it right you could escape a defeat or get some good plunder in if there was a victory.

A couple of months ago I received a letter from the IRS wanting money for taxes I didn't owe. Few hundred dollars, not the end of the world. I spoke with one of our public overseers, er servants who agreed I didn't owe the tax, matter closed. I received a letter today demanding the money or they will take action against me. I called the IRS and reached a recording that due to the shutdown no one can take take my call, but reminding me that all filing dates and deadlines remain in effect.

I'm sure you know this by now but never ever assume that a phone conversation with and IRS Customer Service Rep is binding or has been recorded or will be acknowledged or will be recognized in a court of law.
You can call for info but always, always write to them about the problem, make copies of everything they send and everything you send, mail all correspondence certified mail with return receipt and save the receipt and return card. (and make sure it's signed as sometimes our Postal workers can't be bothered to get a signature. Even though THAT'S THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE FREAKIN' CARD!!!!!)

The judge may be an ass, but check the court rules about service. Most courts get pretty short with servers when the Proof of Service date has little relation to the actual postmark.

Two sides of the same coin. If you increase the limit, you are authorizing higher spending. If you can find a single instance in our history when those haven't occured one after another, I'd be astounded.
The ACA's spending components were grafted on to the text in the Senate not the House. Unconstitutional and pretty much a shitty method of ramming legis through, but that happend and SCOTUS didn't say 'boo.'
I'm still open to the idea that the ACA fight was the wrong one, but I not willing to grant the GOP a free pass in avoiding fights. Midol Medved et al seem to think no markers ever have to be placed down. That's not a winning strategy; it's cowardice.

And also, frankly, I would prefer to have my prostate checked by someone who has done that for decades and seen a few thousand such patients, rather than by someone who might have done half a dozen of those checks for real before doing mine. Gray hair and experience FTW.

That's called 're-targeting'. If the ad provider is in the same network, it stands to reason it knows where your IP visited last (provided the website sends that information with the ad imbed) and will try to either serve you an ad that links back to the site you left, or the same content it thinks you want.
IMO, the real effect, which somehow the ad girls don't totally grasp, is creepy until you realize that it's the same provider (like 'ad choices' or whatever)

Yeah I think there is something to that. Most of my family is Rome or northern Italy. A lot of fair skin, light hair, some blonds, tall, etc. Very friendly but not overly touchy. My bro married into a sicilian family and they grope the shit out of you.

October 17 is complete BS.
The federal government has $1.6 trillion of financial assets. While obviously it needs some working capital, it can go for a long, long time without borrowing any more money than is needed to refinance the expiring debt. Of that $1.6 trillion, about $725 billion is student loans, which can be packaged and resold, like we used to do routinely before the federal government took that industry over.
Then there are the hard assets (property, plant, and equipment). About $3 trillion at book value. Who knows what the market value is. But the federal government could sell and/or lease out a whole lot of land, buildings, and other stuff that is already carried on the books.
Then there are the leases and drilling permits. Bonus payments could raise a hick of a lot of cash, and royalty payments would reduce operating deficits.
If it gets bad, they could stretch out expenditures -- buy that car in 2015 instead of 2014.
A hiring freeze or pay/promotion freeze would be a good idea. Moving functions out of Washington, DC to cheaper locations would be a good idea. Eliminating non-value added functions would be a good idea. I'm guessing we could all get along just fine without the Director of Diversity Programs in the Office of Energy Technology Coordination in the Department of the Air Force, plus her assistant, plus the office space and travel budget, plus the overhead people who support her. It's time to get serious about this.
But the bottom line is that we can go for months without needing to borrow more money.

This was actually of use to me a couple weeks ago when some goofball plowed into the front of my car. He had a jeep; I had a Honda. I got the damage. Thanks to goofball's insurance, he's the one who paid.

Not just low power, but hard riding and poorly handling. A passing semi on a two lane highway made for close contact with a farmer's corn crop if you weren't prepared for it
The engine noise, wind noise, and road noise were also louder than a chainsaw in a tin shithouse.
Heat was only that in name, those more than inches from a blower fan needed to hold a cigarette (or joint) to stave off frostbite

Only because people didn't maintain the heater boxes that wrapped the exhaust pipes (They'd develop rust holes and leak heated air) and/or failed to reconnect the accordion heat hoses going to the interior from the heater boxes after removing and reinstalling the engine.
I've had several used buses and NONE of them ever had the accordion hoses present when acquired, and ALL had rusted through heater boxes.
The engine threw off more than enough heat to make the vehicle toasty...its just that people didn't understand how the system worked and wrecked it the first time they screwed with it.

You can say that again....and, y'know, it was kind o' fun in 1986 when I moved up here -- go to a few Sabbats, hang out near a drum circle or two, wander among the freaks on Telegraph or Haight, ogle the "Dykes on Bikes" leading off the parade.....but things got nasty in the mid '90s. Gay Pride got centered on AIDS somehow, with an unpleasant "in-your-face" edge; the "local color" got threatening instead of merely befuddled. In the mid 90s, the Berkeley "naked guy" was something you shook your head and laughed about....but by 2006, he was dead. I'm to the point where I don't enjoy it any more at all.

I've seen a fair number of IT projects. In this case they knew exactly what their worst case load scenario could be and they still failed to have sufficient capacity or proper advance testing despite the ample off the shelf tools for handling that. To claim that it is because Obamacare is so popular is a bullshit excuse. The system should have launched with ample excess capacity and then determined what was needed on a continuing basis after the initial rush had ended.

Y'know, that was the tamer of the two reports I did on those fairs. The second one, the Up Your Alley Fair report, was 1000x more beyond belief, and yet for some reason it remains lesser known. Even big fans of the Folsom report don't know about it sometimes.
If you were able to merely "convert" people with the Folsom report, you likely will be able to render them comatose with the second one.

They were all gung-ho to build "high speed rail" in FL some years ago and even managed to get it enshrined in the state constitution on a ballot measure.
That shit went nowhere, never got built, and was removed a few years later when people started realizing what a boondoggle it would be.
Somewhere, some someones lost a shitload of money buying farm land where they thought the roadbed was gonna go. When the ballot measure passed, they would have been all high-5'ing and shit.

I strongly believe the ACA is intended to fail to create a panic that lets them institute their real plan for health care: single payer. Consequently, making the code work without running afoul of the internal contradictions may be very difficult indeed.
And perhaps that would be a good filter for future proposed legislation. If it cannot be made to function as code, open sourced for public scrutiny, it cannot be passed into law. Further, I think we need an open source rule for legislation. To me, 'we have to pass the law to find out what is in it' is treasonous. The way this law was passed could only be surpassed by a foreign conqueror in terms of imposition on an unwilling people.

This NRO article by Keving Williamson got me to thinking. (!) The Global Warming crowd wants us to radically alter our existence and pretty much all of civilization based on some models that are hypothetical at best and all too often simply unconnected to reality.
Yet there are very real and definite numbers underlying the simple calculation of when servicing the national debt will overwhelm revenues. No hypothetical about it. Any high school graduate should by able to follow the math. (The fact that most graduates of the past twenty years cannot is part of how we got here.) This is as Doom-y as it gets. A real apocalypse in which debt conquers all and there will simply be no money for anything else unless tax rates reach a level that also collapse the economy.
For most of us this is an event happening in our lifetimes. A mere decade away. Forestalling it means significant suffering even sooner as it becomes necessary to both greatly reduce entitlements and increase revenues. Anything else only moves the date a bit farther into the future but not far enough to dump it on an unborn generation.
Sure, something could happen to alter the circumstances. A plague could sweep the globe that has severe mortality levels among the elderly. It would be horrible but it would nullify a major chunk of our unfunded obligations at all levels. But you cannot plan for such a thing unless you want to be the greatest criminal of all human history. (Other die-offs could defuse the debt bomb [see Matt Ruff's 'Sewer, Gas, and Electric for an example] but the elderly would be the group with the greatest effect and the least negative repercussions. At least until you discover someone took some vital knowledge to the grave.
So one of these threats is very real and one is dubious at best. But we're largely ignoring one and allowing the other to change how we live.

There are a number of free or shareware text editors that can replace Notepad. One of them may have what you want, which sounds like a 'show formatting characters' setting.

I don't know what it would taste like but I am disappointed that some entrepreneur has not yet introduced this delicacy to the carnivals and state fairs of our great nation.
