How Bad Were the Developers of the ObamaCare Website?
Well CGI's last 'success' was the infamous Canadian gun registry:
Their most famous government project was for the Canadian Firearms Registry. The registry was estimated to cost in total $119 million, which would be offset by $117 million in fees. That's a net cost of $2 million. Instead, by 2004 the CBC (Canada's PBS) was reporting costs of some $2 billion - or a thousand times more expensive.
Yeah, yeah, I know, we've all had bathroom remodelers like that. But in this case the database had to register some 7 million long guns belonging to some two-and-a-half to three million Canadians. That works out to almost $300 per gun - or somewhat higher than the original estimate for processing a firearm registration of $4.60.
You know when each database entry costs more than the actual item being databased, you just might be fucking incompetent.
There is a common assumption in Chicago that guns are the equivalent of free-roaming cobras, being lethal and unmanageable by any means except elimination. The more guns, in this view, the more murders and mayhem.
And No You Can't Keep Your Plan
Because unless your health insurance plan was embedded in amber on March 23, 2010, it will go away. And this was by design.

Everyone in Europe is Shocked, Shocked to Learn that Spy Agencies Spy
I can testify to this firsthand. There's a whole lot of handwringing in Europe over the fact that the US spied on friends. But the truth is that we don't really have friends in Europe - we have 'allies' which is something different. And the best way to make sure allies are still allied is to cross-check what they do in private with what they say in public.
Meanwhile Vladimir Putin personally gives world leaders at the G-20 summit bugged and Trojan Horsed gifts and it's a giant ho-hum in the media.

Okay I bet you Obama never admits it was a mistake or error.
See, his voters, mentally avoid any blame for their own vote as long as Obama plays the bystander and claims he's just as angry about all these snafu's as they are.
If he admits he screwed up. In about 3 seconds half the people that voted for him will internalize the message and admit to themselves they screwed up for voting for a chode. Hate casacade commences.
Thus, he will never admit a mistake. Ever.

For example, just off the top of my head, who in the US government authorized a no bid contract for over $500M; how many contractors were evaluated before the selection process began; what were the capabilities requirements for the contractors (like successfully completed similar jobs, staff competence, legal limitations of foreign contractors to comply with US law, etc.); what systems integration process was in place (government as SI, independent contractor SI, etc.); what performance bonuses or penalties were part of the bid package for each contractor involved?

Sure, in spots. Fells Point is a fun, unpretentious bar scene down by the water. The National Aquarium is easily the best in the country, and arguably one of the best in the world. The area around Johns Hopkins (where I went to undergrad) is quite lovely, especially when you head north/northeast into the Guilford neighborhood (where the professors all live).
But...there's a lot and I do mean A LOT of horrible urban blight elsewhere. (Including just three streets over from N. Charles, where JHU is located - beware!) The Wire wasn't making shit up.

Never got to see them live -- Jerry died when I was 14 years old -- and honestly I dunno if I would've wanted to (well, the free drugs notwithstanding). From 1967-1977 they were titanically good live, but everything afterwards was a huge step downwards in terms of what had come before.
There's a reason fellow AoSHQ moron "JackStraw" is called "JackStraw," btw...go check out the original (live) version of that song (from Europe '72): www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAv71VbdkBc
Glorious, moron-friendly country music. Lots of people don't realize how heavily 'country' the Dead were, but some of their best work was done in that vein. And listen to the harmonies!

From what I've been told enforceability can vary a lot by state. In CA I believe the courts generally hold that you have the right to practice your profession and this can only be restricted if the company can show that you have specific proprietary information that would harm their business and that you were compensated in a fashion commensurate with this exclusivity. Of course with a one year non-compete even the simplest court case could easily keep you tied up that long.

I learned how to rebuild those suckers years ago when I was a gear head and I won't even attempt to remove a front wheel drive tranny. I would rather have ball surgery. I did one and it cured me. They gave me an estimate for $4500 for the one in my acura and I was going to do it, but the dealer split the cost with me, so I said hmm... $2250, here you do it.

BB, that sux. Tranny repairs are extremely overpriced imho. You might try this -- go to a used car dealer and ask him who he uses. They usually know of ways to get their repairs done a lot cheaper.
Or, just buy a new car. What? Yeah, some cheapo model that you can get into for under $300/mo including insurance with a low down payment. That beats sinking $3k into a '94 (if I recall correctly from yesterday). Dealers are offering some pretty low interest rates, even if they tag you for 7 years of payments. Then when circumstances improve, pay the sucker off early. I don't know if you can do this or not; it's just an idea you may not have considered.

WTF? The sucky part is its somewhat of a risk. My acura was a 2001 TL, and there was some factory issue with it, maybe a recall or some shit, so even though it was way out of warranty the dealer split the costs. They did tell me they had an updated brain which made the trans shift better and last longer. I would do a little research to see if there were any factory issues before grabbing a used trans, because at 50K miles it can be half dead, or mostly dead depending on who the fuck was driving it.Was this a honda dealer, or juan's chop shop?

Or were these your old tapes, accumulated over years?
All Analog sources. I knew a lot of the old Bay area tapers. Most everything came from old reels, although there are more than a few KSAN Live Feeds in there, too.
I have pretty much everything from the Warlock Demos to May/June of 71. From there forward I have a LOT, but nowhere near as comprehensive.
Nothing past 1980, though. I just don't care to relive those shows. Saw a lot of them from 85 on, but nothing that needs to be listened to again.

However, there is one thing that the death panels can do that would result in enormous cost saving for the system. We can adopt Cuba's method of treating HIV infection. People who test positive for HIV are quarantined in facilities that are surrounded by barbed wire and going there is not optional. The goal is to keep people with HIV separated from the rest of the population so that they don't infect anybody else. Within these quarantine facilities, they are not given expensive anti-retrovirus medication. They are not given much at all besides meals and, occasionally, aspirin.
When treated, HIV is one of the most expensive diseases known to man. When untreated, many people infected with HIV will be dead of AIDS within two years and they won't cost the healthcare system anything. Within five years most of the rest will be dead as well.
I can understand why Obama is not talking about this inevitable development but why not the GOP?

Impressive as hell. But you don't have everything, including some of the best of the best, because it was long-lost and only fairly recently rediscovered. I can't recommend that Dick's Picks 22 (2/23-24/68 ) release strongly enough, if you have any interest in that era. Literally the best "Lovelight" they ever played and maybe the best "Alligator" > "Caution" medley as well (it veers into China Cat and The Eleven along the way, a unique sequence they never did again).
I would actually be willing to upload it for you if you want. It's THAT GOOD.
Also, the official release of the 2/14/68 Carousel show had a ton of never-before-heard bonus material from the same time period that was found in an abandoned radio station. Just pure gold.

Yes, we had special forces in Tripoli, and two in fact did volunteer and engaged heroically in the efforts to save Americans,” one source told The Times. “The others were asked to stay behind to help protect Tripoli in case there was a coordinated attack on our main embassy.
“The remaining [special operations forces] were ready to dispatch the next morning, but by that time American personnel had been evacuated to the airport, local militias had provided additional security and it was determined there was no need for them to be dispatched at that point,” the source added.
Pressed why the Pentagon and administration officials did not publicly acknowledge the special operations forcesÂ’ contribution that tragic night, the sources said officials decided that their anti-terror work inside Libya was sensitive and closely guarded. In addition, U.S. officials did not have a Status of Forces Agreement in place that would have authorized the troopsÂ’ presence, the sources said.

Ha, ha! I dug up a special section the WSJ published on baseball on 3/29/13, right before Opening Day. The No. 1 Seeds: The Nationals, Reds, Tigers and Angels. The WSJ lumped the BoSox in with the Yankees and Phillies and said "Boston's (championship window) has already closed. They are rebuilding, but sorry to be the one to break this to you - baseball's epicenter has moved west to California."
On the other hand, they predicted my Brewers would be a .500 team. That was generous.

At the same time, another Republican turned the tables on the media and its apparent lack of curiosity about Ambassador Chris Stevens' final days.
"Does it bother you whether or not you know why Chris Stevens was in Benghazi?" asked Trey Gowdy, R-S.C. "Do you know why we were the last flag flying in Benghazi after the British had left and the Red Cross had been bombed? Do you know why requests for additional security were denied?"
Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Tex.,chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry with 84 congressional signatures asking why his department was not offering a reward for tips leading to the Benghazi suspects.

The US underground economy jumped from $1T to $2T during Obama's time in office...so we're moving up. Over 10% of US GDP is underground economy.

Common trick in rural upstate NY too. Put in a foundation, sink, shitter, heater, toss enough of a roof on the foundation to keep water out, then apply for a CO cuz you got enough "services" to get one.
A number of the kids I went to school with that lived "up on the mountain" came out of such homes.
A foundation taxes a lot lower than a house.

The great Academy of Music run in March 1972 (basically warming up for E'72), a number of lost shows from late '69 and early '70, the glorious September 3rd, 1967 Rio Nido show (WOW), etc. etc.

The two special operations forces arrived in time to engage in the final, ferocious firefight between the terrorists and Americans holed up in the CIA annex near the ill-fated diplomatic mission in Benghazi, the sources added.
The two special operators were awarded medals for valor for helping repel a complex attack that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stephens, another American diplomat and two former Navy SEALs, but spared many more potential casualties.
“Yes, we had special forces in Tripoli, and two in fact did volunteer and engaged heroically in the efforts to save Americans,” one source told The Times. “The others were asked to stay behind to help protect Tripoli in case there was a coordinated attack on our main embassy.

About 2 years back we had a guy poaching pronghorns. I pulled my Xterra off the road and set up my spotting scope on the hood and watched this asshole shooting (and missing, thankfully) a Remington just freaking willy nilly into a herd.
Called the sheriff (you may know him, Terry Maketa).
Deputy shows up and I was packing my sig .40. I walked up to his car as he approached and, like anyone who doesn't want to get shot or go to jail, I said "Morning, deputy. I'm carrying, just to let you know."
His response: "Good, we need more of you, and in fact we like it when you carry."

The biggest indicator to me is that freeway traffic in SoCal, where unemployment is supposedly quite high, is still nightmarish. Despite my own situation I've had to turn down jobs that would have me going any significant distance on the 405 during rush hour for a prolonged period. I could do it for a few days but I've no doubt a month of that would destroy me.
If so many are out of work, who is driving all of those cars and where are they going? They're working but not on anything that gets reported to the taxman.

Depends. Every job I had stemmed from that little innocuous piece of paper called an offer letter. Wherein, it states that either party can alter or terminate the agreement with no notice. So it's a binding document that says no one's bound to anything. Basically.
They could have fired me for... well... who cares? They can just fire you and aren't obligated to provide a reason. Likewise I can say "F this shit" drop the mic and walk out. Which I actually did do... god that was a fun day.... how's my ass taste now, Bob? (that really was his name. Bob)
Point is, in today's professional environment, the employer can do anything they like to you. Don't like it? quit. They're not obligated to hire you or continue your employment.

Because you now must have multiple jobs to stay afloat in Cali. Your local barista has to drive from Santa Monica in the morning to his or her second job in Sherman Oaks in the afternoon. Or that shady pizza joint every town has that mostly takes cash and has a threatening note posted if your check bounces.

Really build quality. I have always wondered how well these were built. Decent fretwork, electronics, that sort of thing. Figured you might have had your hands on one or two of these.
Always wanted an active pup equipped SuperStrat style axe. Never had a chance to get a hold of one of these. Don't see too many up here.

Well from what I remember of the guilds of that era they weren't too bad. I think there are far better options in the super strat area for the money that guild is going for though. That guild has a kahler bridge, and they are kind of tone suckers. I would way rather have one of the japanese made charvel/jackson neck thru soloists they made in the 90's with the floyd rose bridge for that price. It would be 3X the guitar. You can probably also get a very recent jap made charvel pro mod series used for that money. You would have to add the EMGs, but you might even find one with them already in it. I just don't see that guild as much of a super strat it THAT is what you are aiming for. There are way more options out there.

That doesn't however, help with the leftover candy issue. The BH initially goes wild, talks herself into a panic, then panic buys-at the last minute. Then she gives the first kids like 3 pieces each -- by the end, we'll be dishing out double-handfuls and still end up with plenty.

It's a '99 Honda. Fifteen year-old car now. Not that that is a bad thing. I'd be checking at the self-serve auto-wreckers like Pick and Pull, if there are any in his area, or even a couple of hundred miles distant. They sell transmissions for under $200, usually. So hire a shade-tree mechanic with a pickup, go with him to the wreckers, find a suitable donor that apparently died in wreck (not involving the tranny, of course) and help the guy pull the tranny and install it B'Boy's car.
I was just at a Pick and Pull today; bought an A/C compressor for my Suburban. $66 with a year guarantee on it. I was in and out of the yard in 20 minutes.

So tonight I'm teaching. 80 or so students. I tell them up front I suck with names, so don't be offended if I forget your name, my brain just has a problem with names.
Now there's a girl, Paige. And she is one of those girls that in 5 years is going to just be crushin hearts and steamrolling the boys. As we age, we learn to spot the absolutely gorgeous girls before they become absolutely gorgeous. She's one of them. Plain Jane today but she's going to be wrecking the boys rather soon.
Those girls are few and far between, but like a good sniper, I log it. Including name. Tonight, she's pounding away on her keyboard during my lecture. Laptops and pads are specifically verboten in my class.
I call her out: "Paige! the crap are you typing!?" good natured, I run my classes pretty low stress. She grins and puts it away.
Here's where it gets good.
After class she and her boyfriend roll up on me. She's freaked out because I knew her name. Like paranoid freaked out. My kids know I was a DI and so if I know your name... well, you get the idea.
So I'm explaining to her that I remembered her name because it's Paige, which is a pretty cool name, imo.
Now I'm an old crusty bastard and could be Paige's dad (it's not likely, but... hey... there's some nights where I don't remember much) so I'm not putting off any creepy old teacher vibe or anything, YET, her boyfriend is standing just behind her, just a little too close (you know the body language). Dude is completely insecure and obviously threatened by all this on a bio level. I don't even think he was aware of it.
Having the experience I do in boxing rings and in the military you learn to read body language and non-verbals more than you do verbal comms. They tell so much more of the story.
Watching this dynamic play out was a total hoot.
Getting old sucks, but the wisdom it carries with it is kinda fun.

In a nutshell, to win elections you have to get people to stop voting for dems. So it is important to understand why they vote for dems. One of the ways to find out why they vote for dems is to let them tell you why. Often it boils down to "dems care more about me and my family."
OK. The Rs have a huge opportunity right now if they will seize it. What Oblamer (in cahoots with pelosi/reid and the rest) has done is very mean. Lying to people and fucking up their insurance is mean behavior. It does not square with "they care about people."
So, attack where it matters -- with voters that will change their minds (which excludes the free shit army, they are bought and paid for and there is no point in trying to bid for them). Attack in these areas:
dems do not listen. dems do not care (or are deliberately mean). dems are irresponsible. dems are unreasonable and insensible.
Repeat these things constantly and incessantly -- don't care (and are mean). don't listen, irresponsible. unreasonable and insensible.

The basic attitude that the GOP should present is like one of two camp counselors at summer camp. The Dem one says, "hey, let's everybody go swimming, that'll be fun and exciting!" And the GOP says, "y'know, maybe we should scout things out a bit and think a little -- there can be riptides and dropoffs. With some common sense, we can all have fun, but let's make sure this really works before we dive everyone in."
The problem is that the Dems immediately go "Repubs are killjoys -- they don't want you to have fun!".....and the GOP buys into it, using the language of "killjoy" and "exciting" in the discussion, without mentioning that throwing people with limited swimming skills into hazardous situations is "dangerous" and "stupid" and can lead to "calamities best avoided in recreational endeavors." -- or, as Three Dog Night put it, "That ain't the way to have fun, son...."

You cannot use reason to reason a person out of a position they arrived at without the use of reason. I'm sure that has been said more pithily by someone a lot more famous than me. but it is true.
It is true that people are upset with Oblabla and his lies, but they will forgive him quicker than you say 'a'. Because he means well. They believe that, and no reason will dislodge them from that.
The guy that did the study on the scientific knowledge of Tea Partiers vs non could not believe his findings. He said so. He said he would revise his beliefs in light of the study, but I don't believe that. I think he will believe that his study was somehow flawed.
Because the alternative is that his universal view, his gestalt, is fucked.

Thats about right. My father in law talks like a republican, everything he says sounds like he is a right winger, but the asshat votes dem. Not sure he did this last time around, but still. My mother in law just says "I'm a party person" to explain why she votes dem. I said yeah, the nazi's said the same fucking thing. So you got 2 people who vote dem with no fucking real explanation why or any good reason to vote dem, but they do. We're dealing with plain out stupidity.

You are missing the main point. If you want to get thru to someone you have to talk to them in their own language.
Don't reason with them. I don't believe you can either. Go straight for the 'care' card and play it unmercifully. He doesn't care about you. Even drama queens understand that one sooner or later.

Another part of the problem is the whole "GOP [Grand Old Party] / Republican"-thing. If someone started up an "anti-Democratic-Idiots Party", they'd likely poll better than Republicans do today.....because the GOP's "traditions" (like nominating the guy who came in second to the last loser, being "above the fray" in a knife-fight, knifing the base in the back, and seeking "comity" with those who want them destroyed) frankly suck -- and since Gramsci's "March Through the Institutions", less than 1% of people who graduated college since 1990 have the faintest idea what a Republic actually is, anyway.

Actually, one thing the GOP could do if they were smart [oh, yeah -- rolls eyes] is to intentionally vanish. You'd start a "Constitution Party" and a "Federalist Party" and a "Freedoms Party" and a "Family Values Party" and a "Strong Economy Party".....but hold a joint convention with the remains of the Repubs to select candidates. Just to goad the progs, the rump Republicans could campaign on "our greatest achievement was to free the slaves!" and perpetually trumpet their drive for the Civil Rights Acts over Democratic opposition as their only issue.

agreed. no point in even trying. but they can be manipulated.
Now, I know that most decent people think it is odious and beneath them to manipulate fools and that only an asshole would do that. Well, guess what? -- that is how we ended up with a government run by assholes. If we want to defend ourselves from the assholes we are going to have to learn how to manipulate the fools, too.
The assholes have a huge head start and manipulate fools much better than we will -- (in large part because our heart is not really in it and we tend to be respectful of people even when they are stupid). Because the assholes have such a huge head start there are very few opportunities to remold the fools. But, Oblamer fucked up with this insurance bit. Canceled policies will piss a lot of people off. A short-term window is now open for a very limited time.

I say this because I saw flexibility in position. regardless of personal belief. A desire to settle this (at least for now), and move on to more important matters.
This is completely missing in DC. Mainly the flexibility, not the desire to move on. Jeez how they'd just love to move on, with nothing settled.

Exactly. In a nutshell I found that dem voters are the ones who usually think the world owes them a living. There are no dems on either side of my parent's families. The vast majority were vets, WWII or Korea, and a few that were in Nam, and many were self employed. A few retired out of GM but were republicans. My uncle that fought in the pacific had the attitude that americans had become pussies and needed to be exterminated by a hostile invading army to the tune of a million per day to wisen their ass up. My other uncle that was in korea says the dem leaders all need to be in prison camps. These were people who made a living by the sweat of their brow and didn't expect others to wipe their ass for them.

Too much of the Republican Party is trying to be diplomatic in that way -- not about having an agenda that guarantees our rights and freedoms as citizens, our bargain with the government as put forth in the Constitution -- but, instead, finding issues where politicians of both stripes can engage in a bidding war for contributions. The majority of the time that the debate is "should the table be stacked for A over B, or B over A?" -- which elicits much lobbying cash from A and B, the answer is that the government shouldn't be involved at all.

As you may know, the Western was the most successful of our earliest Hollywood offerings overseas. Why is that? They often clearly defined good guys and bad guys; the bad guys usually got what was coming to them. They also defined a certain code of conduct. Vary beyond this code, and someone might kill you for it.

yeah thats about where I am. I didn't have kids because I was not about to give up the music thing, and I didn't want to leave the wife alone with a kid and having to deal with things while I was away. Its only the last few years have I really settled down "just" enough that a 2 or 3 year old girl would be cool, but old enough to where a new born would be out of the question. My friend has a 3 year old grand daughter, and she is adorable, and was almost aborted but cooler heads prevailed. I couldn't imagine that little girl not being here.

There's an anecdote that Burr was in his mistress' coach with his mistress arriving at his (supposedly vacant) residence, when they unexpectedly encountered his wife on the doorstep. Whereupon Burr said, "Lady X, Mrs. Burr -- Mrs. Burr, Lady X -- I'm sure you have much to talk about" -- and got back in the coach and left.

I wish that were the end of it. How about "we had to jack up the 'rack rates' of medical procedures so that we could use group negotiations to get them back to something close to realistic.....and used that to force people out of deciding to go to doctors on an open market into needing 'healthcare' -- that we could then regulate, tax, cross-subsidize, and ration."
Or, let's get real simple -- the food pyramid. That doesn't encourage diabetes or anything, right?

The Simpsons Tapped Out tablet game I've been playing has been running a Halloween event where game object prizes are handed out of the players rack enough GOO by popping ghosts. The next and likely final goal is 30 billion GOO.
Burns and Smithers just had a little conversation in which Smither suggested players were slacking off because they felt their contribution didn't matter enough. Burn offered as counterpoint the 2000 election. Then the game ran a message saying to keep at it or we could have another Bush Presidency.
Yeah, wouldn't that be just awful compared to what we have now.
I think I'm done with that game.

The actual script is here if anyone cares.
I cannot believe how much this angers me. The same week the President has been exposed as telling possibly the most egregious and blatant lie in the history of the office, these fools are still rehashing the 2000 election and still getting the facts wrong.
The SCOTUS did not choose the President. They merely told the state of Florida they had to abide by their own laws and any changes would have to wait until later elections. Also, the various press outlets ran their own recounts and found that Bush won every time.
