The Six Most Important Things You'll Learn At Racing School

Some of these tips I've stumbled onto on my own just through going faster than I ought to have been in various cars over the years but a couple were new to me. And kinda obviously good ideas once you think about them for a bit.

1. Imagine a string tied from your steering wheel to your gas pedal.

This is one of the most fundamental pieces of advice I got about driving fast, and it seems obvious once you hear it, but thinking about it while driving makes a big difference. Essentially, what this business of strings tied to gas pedals means is that you can only really go fast when your wheel is straight. If the wheel is cranked far in one direction or the other, your string will be tight on the gas pedal, and you can't push it much. When the wheel is straight, there's plenty of slack, so you can stomp that gas.

Lots of gas with your wheel cranked will usually just get you in trouble. So, you let up in the turns, and bury it in the straights. As you're driving, keep imagining that string, and you'll be surprised how much easier it is to adjust your throttle to what your car is actually doing.

But of course for driving lessons more attuned to your everyday lifestyle I will point you to PJ O'Rourke's classic educational work, "How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink".

53 We've got two factions in this country: The Drama Club, and the Business Club. The Business Club wants to help out deserving needy people, but they want to run the numbers first to see if it doesn't bankrupt everybody, waste a lot of tax dough to no effect, or just siphon money to connected elites. The Drama Club just feels that everybody needs health care, or whatever need everybody is talking about this week, and that if you wish hard enough it will magically happen and everything will be just so super-awesome!! Needless to say, the Drama Club has been running things for the last 5 or 6 years.........

Jerry Brown Signs Law Repealing California's Retroactive Business Tax

A little island of sanity in cuckoo land.

In 1993, California created the Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS) incentive. The QSBS program encouraged founders and early-stage investors to start, grow, and keep businesses in California by offering a 50 percent personal tax exclusion on capital gains if the company was ultimately acquired. Nineteen years later, in August 2012, a California appellate court ruled one of the California-centric provisions unconstitutional. The Franchise Tax Board responded in December 2012 not only by cancelling the entire program but also revoking it retroactively back to 2008. Suddenly, without warning, 2,500 California start-up founders-me included-were personally on the hook for over $120 million in 5-years of retroactive taxes, interest, and penalties.

Vaclav Havel and the Poster Test

"The manager of a fruit-and-vegetable shop places in his window, among the onions and carrots, the slogan: "Workers of the world, unite!"

"Why does he do it? What is he trying to communicate to the world? Is he genuinely enthusiastic about the idea of unity among the workers of the world? Is his enthusiasm so great that he feels an irrepressible impulse to acquaint the public with his ideals? Has he really given more than a moment's thought to how such a unification might occur and what it would mean?
Let us take note: if the greengrocer had been instructed to display the slogan "I am afraid and therefore unquestioningly obedient; he would not be nearly as indifferent to its semantics, even though the statement would reflect the truth. The greengrocer would be embarrassed and ashamed to put such an unequivocal statement of his own degradation in the shop window, and quite naturally so, for he is a human being and thus has a sense of his own dignity. To overcome this complication, his expression of loyalty must take the form of a sign which, at least on its textual surface, indicates a level of disinterested conviction. It must allow the greengrocer to say, "What's wrong with the workers of the world uniting?" Thus the sign helps the greengrocer to conceal from himself the low foundations of his obedience, at the same time concealing the low foundations of power. It hides them behind the façade of something high. And that something is ideology.

From Havel's 1978 essay 'The Power of the Powerless'.  Have you stopped to think what the signs on display in your own office or store are really saying?

Saving the Earth vs the Earth

Puny humans - the Earth will always win.

I know..it's very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kids'  "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50 cent light bulbs with $10.00 light bulbs...well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in just four days - yes, FOUR DAYS - by that volcano in Iceland has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon.   And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud at any one time - EVERY DAY.

I don't really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in all its years on earth.

10 “Critical Theory”: Modern Crypto-Marxism Marxism is alive and well. Not so much in the former Soviet Union and the Warsaw pact countries, or even in Communist China! Where is Marxism thriving? The same place it always has thrived: In Universities and in the teaching schools. It has thrived to the point that it is rapidly supplanting the American civic heritage of liberty and virtue. In order to fight back against them, we must understand them. They are no longer the stereotypical type who shout “workers of the world unite!!1!” at the top of their lungs. The Marxism we face is Cultural Marxism, and their academic vanguard is Critical Theory. More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=3370

14 Posted this on the MNF thread, so OF COURSE the ONT pops up as soon as I hit "post." Evening, all! Some random thoughts based on headlines seen over at Drudge. > Why exactly am I supposed to care that someone (or someones) defaced John Lennon's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? So idiots decided to scrawl stupid messages on it or whatever. Dear John Lennon, Jim Morrison's gravestone called. It says, "Welcome to the club." Sincerely, Who gives a rat's ass? > So Rick's Cabaret, a strip club in NYC, has banned Giants games from being shown on the club's in-house TVs. The booing and depression that accompanied each game was apparently making it hard for the dancers to ply their craft. To which my question is: who the hell goes to a strip club to watch football? > This morning on Drudge I saw a story about a 19 year old woman and her 50-something father being arrested in Chicago following the discovery of a dismembered corpse buried in a bag in a shallow grave in her backyard. This evening I see another story on Drudge about a 61 year old "woman" who murdered her 6-month old granddaughter by striking her multiple times with a sledgehammer and then slitting her throat with a butcher knife. You understand why I put "woman" in quotes, since the word "monster" is more appropriate. Dear North Korea, If you ever get around to launching that preemptive strike on the US, please start with Chicago. PLEASE. It is a cesspit of sinners and evil. Sincerely, Every person with a soul

35 I thought I might be first, just once! BC1981, who is Carl Crawford? Football player, if so, I am not interested. I never expected my brother Paul to live, I think he's going to die soon. He was in the hospital from last Sunday night to Friday. I talked with him for over an hour both Thursday & Friday. He only wants to make it back to Massachusetts, see everyone & expects he'll get another case of pneumonia again & his temperature will go so high he will go into a coma. He doesn't want to live like he is anymore & I don't blame him. I called him tonight to tell him I finally put all the things I've had in a bag on my office floor and sent to him via FedEx. He could barely speak, he told me they want to send him to ER again & he refused. He has signed a paper with instructions on what he will allow & what he won't. My mother was in a nursing home from July 2005 until she passed in July 2011. For the past week I keep expecting her to walk into living room & other things.

Not that it matters to me, but when I'm home I'm stationed at the Navy Yard, so I still get emails from Navy District Washington.  Apparently the shutdown just cost them a four-day weekend.

Email from a captain there:  "In light of the  government shutdown and some members of the NDW team remaining on furlough, this Friday 11 Oct will be a normal workday.  At one point we were considering this as a potential 4-day weekend with the 11th being a special liberty & liberal leave day, but based on the current situation that will not be possible."

Why the hell would you even send out that email?  Idiots everywhere.

Nope, I said. Nothing there for me. I will not sign up. I will not pay the fine either. They may manage to _extract_ the fine under duress, something which may not hold up in court, but I won't pay voluntarily.

I'm healthy as a horse. Obamacare needs people like me to sign up and pay massive premiums with huge deductibles in order for the scheme to work. I have no intention whatsoever of complying.

104 Update on the Cape Hatteras Nat. Sea Shore:

A couple of parking lots are barricaded, but some are open..., which is a little odd. All of the various facilities have 'Closed' notices, but people are parking there (if not barricaded) anyhow, and using the beaches normally. All of the drive-on access to the beaches are blocked, but fishermen are just parking along the way and walking down to the surf. At one point, someone has erected a 20' pole and American flag. Tomorrow,  I will snap a picture of some local signs that express anger. The natives are restless.

The problem isn't that healthcare =/= health insurance -- although it isn't. The problem is that healthcare has become an out-and-out extortion scheme, where you "pay protection money" or get ruined. Karl Denninger dug up an example of a guy who paid for his wife's delivery with a 3-day hospital stay by writing a check....it was the equivalent of just under $1000 2012 dollars (about $140 back then). What happens if you try that today? You get zapped for about $10K and they throw you out 20 minutes after clipping the cord. Why? Because there is a "rack rate" to medicine that NOBODY PAYS, in order to justify that medicare and health insurance gets a discount.

You're not paying for what you get, you're paying to not get it good-and-hard when (as is inevitable) you eventually submit to the healthcare machine. And as any mobster can tell you, you get a nice steady income when you're selling protection.

Obamacare is a case of not fixing the underlying problem (by having posted prices that apply to all), but rather having the government skim the protection money you're already paying.

Posted by: torquewrench at October 07, 2013 11:00 PM (gqT4g) It's vital that everyone who can, does this, publicly. And in your discussions with the deluded, point out that the teeth were stripped that allowed further penalties and actions by the IRS against you (i.e. confiscation). If we can't get our bumbling representatives to stand up, we have to do it at the street level. As a true geek, I fall back on quoting video games - the Warlord Okeer in Mass Effect 2 said "I will inflict upon the genophage the greatest insult an enemy can suffer: to be ignored." I'm sure a real person said it first, but this is cooler, because it was before they wrecked the series, and that makes it vintage. Or something. They want meek compliance, they will settle for impotent rage, maybe it's time to try "whatever, go away." This should have been the policy with the parks (and still can be), go en masse, ignore them. I know some people have been doing that and bravo.

The difference is that "slitting throats" is particularly effective metaphysical imagery with interesting rhythmic devices, which counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the humanity of the blogger's compassionate soul, and which contrives through the medium of the blog structure to sublimate this, transcend that, and come to terms with the fundamental dichotomies of the other -- and one is left with a profound and vivid insight into the very core of the blog's existence.

174 Here's an example of what i'm talking about.

PJ O'rourke:

"I have only one firm belief about the American political system, and that is this: God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat.

God is an elderly or, at any rate, middle-aged mate, a stern fellow, patriarchal rather than paternal and a great believer in rules and regulations. He holds men strictly accountable for their actions. He has little apparent concern for the material well-being of the disadvantaged. He is politically connected, socially powerful and holds the mortgage on literally everything in the world. God is difficult. God is unsentimental. It is very hard to get into God's heavenly country club.

Santa Claus is another matter. He's cute. He's nonthreatening. He's always cheerful. And he loves animals. He may know who's been naughty and who's been nice, but he never does anything about it. He gives everyone everything they want without thought of a quid pro quo. He works hard for charities, and he's famously generous to the poor. Santa Claus is preferable to God in every way but one: There is no such thing as Santa Claus."

I guess you all have heard the Great News!!!!11! that Maryland's state run O-care exchange managed to enroll a whopping 326 people as of Sunday night. That's out of a population of 6.9M with 800K or so uninsured.

That's a state-run exchange, but we can expect no better from the federal run exchange, which would mean we'd expect about 16K to have enrolled nationwide.

This is EPIC FAIL! proportions here. An absolute joke. And I wonder how many of those 326 are the old and sick who were previously uninsurable. My guess is about all of them.

This is going to the biggest train wreck ever attempted by a government, anywhere, in history.

Knowing something of the horrors of WW I certainly helped.  I love black humor and Blackadder has some of the blackest!

They pan to where he was supposed to be , showing a hacksaw lying next to a severed hand and the handcuff and handcuff chain hanging from the post indicating he cut his hand off to escape the handcuffs. I am very sorry to hear that.  Hospitals should be a place of healing, not a place of infection.

That (MRSA Methicillin Resistant Staphalococcus Areus ) is some nasty stuff.  I had it once and it was pretty horrible.  Went to five different doctors till one of them got it right.

C. Diff is also very bad.  Overuse of antibiotics have made some previously annoying germs into deadly pathogens.

Hospitals are very bad places to be now.  Apparently they've forgotten all about how to prevent the spread of pathogens.  Some are learning.  Flooding rooms with UV light and using copious quantities of disinfectant.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

259 It seems to me, that the difference is one is on the blog's masthead. It's a jpg. It's not something Ace types every day in reference to anything or anyone in particular. It's also a well-known literary quote, not something Ace wrote himself. Finally, and most importantly, it was put there and approved by Ace himself since it's his site. Ace can use any violent expressions he wants on his site and take responsibility for that. The rules are different for a site owner and a site commenter. It's not an accident that mobys come here and typically post racist or violent crap in an effort to discredit the blog and make it look bad. The people who hate this site know there are lines that, if crossed, can cause trouble for Ace and harm the reputation of the site -- and they try to cross them on purpose. A common-sense ideas is that the people who like the site and want it to prosper probably shouldn't emulate the behavior of people who hate this site and want it to suffer. Besides, everybody is always free to start their own site and use as much martial language as they want.

you can do the violence thing all you want as long as you don't:

3  threaten a political leader in a real way

290 It is arguably safer, especially while learning to go fast, to get your braking done before you turn so that you don't have to let up on the throttle while IN the turn but instead are able to steadily apply the throttle more and more as you roll toward and past the apex of the turn. Lifting the throttle IN the turn can result in trailing throttle oversteer. In a rear engine car like an old 911, this is a quick at to induce a spin.

I think the design is just inelegant.

330 That time it was a loose battery cable

The ones with the protrudy posts sometimes have clamp connectors that get squashed down and don't hold well anymore no matter how tight they're cranked down -- the hole in the middle has been peened out larger than its supposed to be.

The + and/or - can be bad.

Quick temporary fix for that won't tighten situation that can get you back on the road -- take a thin piece of wire, like paper clip, and jam the clamp down with the wire inside the hole so it wedges a larger contact patch on the opposite side and expand the clam enough that it'll tighten up a bit.  This ploy can work for quite a long time.

You think that war isÂ…' "I snapped. "A John Wayne movie' I said. 'That's what you were going to say, isn't it? We think war is a John Wayne movie-with good guys and bad guys, as simple as that. Well, you know something, Mister Limey Poofter? You're right. And let me tell you who those bad guys are. They're us. WE BE BAD.' "We're the baddest-assed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three-quarters grizzly bear and two-thirds car wreck and descended from a stock market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France and Spain, roll them all together and it won't give us room to park our cars. We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. When we snort coke in Houston, people lose their hats in Cap d'Antibes. And we've got an American Express credit card limit higher than your piss-ant metric numbers go.' "You say our country's never been invaded? You're right, little buddy. Because I'd like to see the needle-dicked foreigners who'd have the guts to try. We drink napalm to get our hearts started in the morning. A rape and a mugging is our way of saying 'Cheerio'. Hell can't hold our sock-hops. We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, fuck longer, and buy more things than you know the names of. I'd rather be a junkie in a New York City jail than the king, queen, and jack of all you Europeans. We eat little counties like this for breakfast and shit them out before lunch.' "Of course, the guy should have punched me. But this was Europe. He just smiled his shabby, superior European smile.""

403 393 Is it fair to say the moon the moon could be a planet, but isn't under our current definitions? In one of his science articles, Asimov postulated that the Earth and the Moon were actually a dual planet system orbiting a common mass center.

Only Americans want it to be a planet. Because you think you're special, since that's the one planet you found, and you wanted to be equal to the British and the French. But deep down, you're not, and you know you're not.

Haha WH, well said ... I guess my thought came from when I studied astronomy back in school, back in the day, that, due to the size of the moon, it could be more accurately described as an "earth-moon" system, kinda like a binary star.  Imagine if we found such a thing by observation - two gas giants, say, orbiting each other, and another star (or system of stars) as well.  Cf., this article:  http://tinyurl.com/lc2v6e2.  Definitions do change - ask Pluto.  The science is never settled, and language is forever changing ...

It won't help you sleep, but I think it goes something like this.

1. Everyone who doesn't need insurance this very damn minute balks at the prices on the exchanges and takes the penalty on income tax returns if they haven't already taken steps to ensure they're not getting money back in April anyway.

2. Everyone who wants to see a doctor does, and signs up for whatever plan is available in their county at the office, and immediately cancels the plan once the immediate need passes.

3. Far fewer people are on any plan than expected, which means the fed subsidies aren't nearly as high as people thought they were going to be. Note that the cost of running the exchanges is already sunk, and increasing due to their lack of function, but not in way that matters on a budget level.

4. Folks momentarily say, wow we dodged a bullet because the federal budget isn't blowing up like we thought. Except money has to come from somewhere...

5. The only place it can come from in this scenario is the reserve the insurance companies have built up over the years (the last few in particular). They thought this would be covered by all the folks required to sign up, but due to 1., that won't happen. The Insurance companies don't just sit on piles of money, they invest it. So as they cash out to cover "unforeseeable" losses, whatever they had invested in (your guess is as good as mine, but assume the stock market and treasury market are part of this) drops precipitously when they sell. This is the first shoe to fall.

6. Negative cash flow eventually means bankruptcy. Big insurers find themselves days from insolvency and start begging for help. No one will loan them any money because among other things, the free cash floating around will have been used to buy up whatever they were selling in 5. Which means bailout. But they're insolvent, so we're talking repeated Greece style bailouts. Without end. And expanding as one insurer after another runs out of reserves. Which means all the extra cost is suddenly shifted back to federal coffers. So the feds have to borrow a ton of dough all at once when the treasury market is already tanking.

7. Exponents are a fucking bitch. Bondzilla strikes. Dogs and cats get friendly.

I'd like to see a way out, But the Dems control the Senate for another year, and Obama isn't going anywhere for two more after that, and this will all happen faster than three years and quite possibly within months.

474 I think think the ObamaCare fiasco will sputter out by April 2014 (tax season), at the latest. Campaign 2014 is starting, and will be in all the papers by April. ObamaCare registration should be fixed well before then, but enrollment ... I'm looking at a 176% increase, so I'm looking harder for alternatives. Maybe I'll find a legal one. In any event, the costs aren't going down for most people. The costs can't go down, and this involves millions of people. I'm already hearing of hours being cut back, loss of company benefits, so the afflicted number of people is likely to be in the tens of millions. Then there's the corporate mandate ... I'm marginally worried, but I'm also not a D or a RINO.

Sorry Otho - blue oval FTW ... although those are some very pretty cars ... I dream of an early '60s Falcon (US) completely updated (IFS, IRS, 302, caged. stripped, stiffened and lowered) for track day fun.  I have '67 Mustang 289 coupe partially restored.

Mirage, hard to be encouraged, since the thing was kinda designed to fail so that we could bring on single payer, but maybe if the 53% feel enough pain we can get into a position to fix it, and not nationalize it.  Govt healthcare, in any form, equals politicized health care - not something I want for sure, but that doesn't mean we wont survive (the republic won't, it's pretty much gone already).   I would prepare for white males to be prioritized below any other group - our best bet will be concierge health care, for those that can afford it, as long as private pay is still legal (UK is allowed, Canada is not, which is why they come here).  Prepare to wait in line - imagine your hospital run by the post office or your local DMV, and follow the latest health fad, or your services will be withheld.  Don't smoke, drink to excess, engage in risky behaviors, own firearms, or be overweight.

By fix it, I mean:  return the tax deduction for heath care to the people, as opposed to the employers; a real nationwide market for coverage (without political mandates); and, the walmartization of services to the greatest extent possible.  Safety net programs aren't going anywhere, but their growth and expansion could be limited.  To me, the real problem is the insane market - direct pay would help rationalize it ...

476 Posted by: Berserker at October 08, 2013 03:45 AM (FMbng)

Yeah after 7., who knows what happens. There are a whole mess of things only holding together right now because the Reserve forced the market to double since the 2009 lows. Once the tanking starts, it will cascade as more entities go underwater, or near enough that their creditors demand liquidations. If you're small, this easily blows you up. If you're, say, China, maybe you hold treasuries to maturity on the theory that they'll still get paid, but you are going to take a loss on any you unload early, and maybe you panic like everyone else.

A lot of tolerance around the world is based on the current illusion of prosperity, take that away and folks are likely to get snippy.

Let me make some things easier here.

The left has been jonesin' for government control of healthcare for well nigh a century -- realizing that the ultimate control over individuals is to force them to kneel or die. Even though this sort of regime has recently been crumbling with early adopters elsewhere (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/pemka4p), the US lurched significantly in that direction with Obamacare.

Unfortunately for those putting it forth, this had to be done with procedural finesse in a partisan manner with an intentionally-flawed, half-measure law -- and a large number of outright lies had to be told to even make that halfway plausible.

For the statist left, the strategy going forward has to be blaming all the horrors of the current law on having not gone far enough....thus driving a need to go further. By contrast, there are many strategies available to the contrary -- focus on the incompetence of the players, focus on the broken promises, focus on the biased implementation of the law, with waivers and delays....

And in the background is the whale -- what if the only people that sign up for Obamacare are sick? There are supposedly 30 million people who would qualify going in, excluding the millions that will lose their coverage as their hours are cut, their plans terminated, their jobs eliminated....if only the sickest 3 million sign up for Obamacare, then the insurance companies handling all the paperwork for this will throw their hands up in disgust and walk away....and this is quite likely.

At that point, I predict (with a fair degree of confidence) that we will see progressives engage in DANDA -- the classic Kubler-Ross stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Negotiation, Depression, Acceptance.

We are going to see all sorts of transparent lies as the media, the left, the progressives, doctors, insurance companies, Pharma, and Democrats try to DENY the self-evident facts. This will be effusive, pervasive, and obnoxious.

We will see ANGER -- which will manifest in political actions, spiteful actions, shunnings, riots, punitive measures, abuses of power and position.

There will be increasing attempts for NEGOTIATION, with more-and-more ridiculous and unbelievable positions and stratagems (please, God, I'll never raise another tax again if I can just balance this budget!!!!).

As the simple mathematics dooms the enterprise, there will eventually come DEPRESSION. I wouldn't count on it being soon and I wouldn't count on it being pretty, but it will come.

And, finally, we shall win through to ACCEPTANCE that Obamacare was always a pipe dream and could never become a functional reality. Sadly, that's years out.

479 cthulhu, I thank you for your thoughts as well. I kind-of only see Kubler-Ross as normal stages. The libs/statists and most assuredly the insurance companies seem to defy these types of 'normals' and are refractory to any degree of actual prolonged pain, so somehow, I just see real Kubler-Ross as with normal Death and Dying, I do not see the libs/statists/insurance companies passing through the stages in conventional, and definitely not in any orderly, type of fashion. No?

As a personal anecdote -- I wasn't all that familiar with the work of Kubler-Ross until, of all things, I ended up doing Sarbanes-Oxley implementations. A guy I was working with was more familiar with K-R, and I got edumicated in that the five stages are a result of emotional/systematic trauma and not just death -- and strict SarbOx was generally an emotional/systematic trauma. So we'd plan our implementation, work with someone, meet a reaction, go off to lunch, and turn to each other and say "DANDA".

And, seriously, it's true. You go in with a big and upsetting change and go to lunch afterward.....and that's what you've got. DANDA, DANDA, DANDA, DANDA, and DANDA.

Which is why I expect that the progressive reaction to denial/implosion of their 100-year dream is going to be DANDA, DANDA, DANDA, DANDA, and DANDA.

It's explicitly called out as a framework, and not a flowchart. Someone can start out 20% Denial, 50% Negotiation, and 30% Depression, and modulate from there.....but they'll likely work out their full measure of each eventually -- and the elements exhausted will likely approximate the order in the list.

484 Totally with you. Da Nile ain't just another river in the valley, is my old saying... That and my inside joke was a KR slide I had where "Acceptance" was the green-colored block... So, when we encountered copious/protracted and/or intractable denial I'd say "Obviously, they need to 'go green'."

Right. My thought is they just aren't as likely to flail that hard for too too long because the cannot (or mor like are unwilling) to suffer any protracted pain. They like the "quick fix" which generally changes the whole game anyway, creating its new flavor of Hell, extrication yet to be determined... Again.

No, they'll flail. This is an existential threat. It's like finding out their mom has cancer. They'll flail, and flail, and flail again -- and even when they're lowering the casket into the hole, they'll flail some more....because the reality is too painful to bear.

And, to a certain extent it is tragic -- we know Morons who are dealing with the loss or illness of family, and the horrible grief of being ripped apart. K-R's model for understanding grief does nothing to blunt its sting.

But when you recognize that leftists are going to be wrecked by the public's rejection of a UK-like NHS, you can easily visualize their response.

Insurers will move to segregate their businesses entirely between Ocare states and non-states.  If yoiur in a non-Ocare state things will muddle along.  If your in an Ocare state, 1) Medicare/aid running out of money, 2) the number of uninsured goes up, 3) everyone elees policies get more expensive, and eventually (2-3 yrs) those OCare state insurance entities start consolidating, then failing.

Life lesson:  Move now

My intent is for my next paying gig to be in either NC or TN, to be contributing in some way dependent on actual added-value processes that I can measure, provide feedback, and improve. The only think keeping me in Silicon Valley is the BH, because all the financial jobs here are based on farcical revenue recognition, bogus income projections, outsourcing, or hype.

Sadly, most vets have more "on-the-ball" than people docs. Their patients can't tell a story, and what can cure a cat can kill a dog and vice-versa....they need to read the signs and know the territory better than the average MD.

It's a bit more nuanced than that. I remember walking with my gf and her horse down to a vet's on Foothill Blvd, Tujunga, to get de-wormer -- and that's just a smidge more "rural" than Burbank.

I was born in Santa Monica. I don't think I've ever seen snow fall.

Which brings up another tale....my mom was a tenured professor of Mathematics and found herself on the college's textbook evaluation committee -- so the bathroom reading at our house was various textbooks, mostly in the science/tech/math field. Having seen more than a few, I can assure you that most physics texts have a chapter for "phases of matter", and every freakin' one of them has snowflakes on the chapter's title page.....and in each case, the flakes are blown up to where they're 3" across.

Which meant that, when growing up, I thought of snowflakes as being 3" shuri-ken nasties like in the intro to Kung-Fu. Sharp bastards that would go "thunk" if you got in the way of one. I'd woken up before to see that snow had fallen, but passed it off as the shattered remains of those goddamned icy throwing-stars pelting down, willy-nilly.....but I'd actually never seen snow fall. I'd walk out-of-doors in weather below freezing and shrink away from the possibility that such lethal monstrosities might be heading my way.

I now understand that snowflakes are considerably smaller and waft to the ground instead of plummet -- but, y'know, that's secondhand info.

Posted by: cthulhu at October 08, 2013 01:41 AM (T1005)

518 Merovign, yes. That is why we are not going anyplace. Lots of natural resources, overhead cover, water/food/game sources and defensible... Yet still 2 hours from an intl airports. Rural, but not Idaho rural. Best we could do. After much research and financial tinkering, the best we could do.

Posted by: Mirage at October 08, 2013 01:43 AM (dkxxj)

519 Jean, agreed.

Posted by: Mirage at October 08, 2013 01:44 AM (dkxxj)

520 I just remember working with Unisys back in the 90's and the EDI/Healthcare PM coming in making personnel raids for programmers.  It was going to be the next big thing ...we were doing data cubes for nascent hyperspectral sensors and embedded optical stuff - so doing Oracle wasn't a big draw for my guys.

Still don't understand why we need to code and classify every interaction, the actual cost variances are so small.  Why couldn't we have a tiered system, tier 1 charges could be initiated by receptionists, tier2 by technicians, tier3 by nurses, tier4 by docs, tier5 would require two docs, tier6 -per-clearance.  Don't even include the actual medical issue in the financial transaction.  Then you periodically review the local medical records vs billing practices.  Any games would show up quickly.

Posted by: Jean at October 08, 2013 01:50 AM (CMlD4)

521 cthulhu, I can understand. You made me laugh, though I never thought of snowflakes as lethal, myself. I can see where one might get that notion with limited experience. I saw snow for the first time as a child when we went to Big Bear, so my fear was more about breaking a limb skiing, not that I might be impaled by flakes. Needless to say, I've never been skiing. When I was in nursing school, I had a significant other want me to go skiing, but I was in nursing school! If I broke my arm, I would get thrown out a semester! NOT an option to be that carefree in my life. Never.

522 Jean, drugs. EDI for supply chain can also be wildly expensive disparately... But drugs, omg. We had drugs that were tens of thousands of dollars a vial, whereas some were but cents. EDI for supply chain can be exacting because reimbursement per procedure sometimes "hinges" on exact items dispensed for a particular treatment. We had 2500 drug line items with 200-300 newly added or not at any point, and CMS added a whole new level of convoluted charging by "units".
