Overnight Open Thread (10-8-2013)
— Maetenloch

The nightly chill in the air tells you what time of the year it is...

It's Decorative Gourd Season, Motherfuckers

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get my hands on some fucking gourds and arrange them in a horn-shaped basket on my dining room table. That shit is going to look so seasonal. I'm about to head up to the attic right now to find that wicker fucker, dust it off, and jam it with an insanely ornate assortment of shellacked vegetables. When my guests come over it's gonna be like, BLAMMO! Check out my shellacked decorative vegetables, assholes. Guess what season it is-fucking fall. There's a nip in the air and my house is full of mutant fucking squash.

I may even throw some multi-colored leaves into the mix, all haphazard like a crisp October breeze just blew through and fucked that shit up. Then I'm going to get to work on making a beautiful fucking gourd necklace for myself. People are going to be like, "Aren't those gourds straining your neck?" And I'm just going to thread another gourd onto my necklace without breaking their gaze and quietly reply, "It's fall, fuckfaces. You're either ready to reap this freaky-assed harvest or you're not."

Pop Quiz: How Much of the Federal Government is Actually Shutdown Money-Wise During 'The Shutdown'?

      A. 94%

      B. 62%

      C. 28%

      D. 17%

Answer Here: D. Just 17%

Which is why Pixy has coined the phrase, Potemkin Shutdown.

But Of Course the VA Will Now Be Closed

Did you think Obama would let a crisis pass without screwing veterans over somehow?

Veterans regional offices will be closed and nobody will answer their phones beginning Tuesday morning as the government shutdown forces furloughs of 7,000 employees of the Veterans Benefits Administration.

"All public access to VBA regional offices and facilities will be suspended," said Veterans Affairs Department spokeswoman Victoria Dillon.

Note that VA hospitals and clinics remain open. For now.

Note to Americans Who Believe Europeans' Health Care System Is the Way to Go

Then you turn around and go: "No no no, it is not all of us, it is only the reactionary Republicans; we liberals we're good, humane people, and now we're going to be wise and benevolent, Europe, and imitate your outstanding example of noble altruism!"

How about putting Europe's claims into doubt, once in a while?

In short: The reason that Europe has its "universal health coverage" is because of, and thanks to, America.
Compare telephones between now and ca 1980; which is better?

Prior to 1980, there were 20 to 40 years of little to no innovation, but nobody knew it, nobody complained about, because few if any people could imagine technological evolution in the sector. The common citizen (American or foreign) couldn't imagine it, the common bureaucrat couldn't imagine it, and certainly the common "I'm-here-to-make-your-life-better" politician couldn't imagine it. Only a few rare individuals could do so. Government got out of the phone business at about the time Ronald Reagan was president (although I don't think it was due to one of RR's own policies), the private sector was where "bold, new policy solutions" were created, and the field boomed - to everybody's benefit! And today the average "poor" person has more telephone "power" - he is richer, in a sense, regarding one's own communications capabilities - than the dirty capitalist pig millionaire of 50 years ago, of 20 years ago, and even of 10 years ago.

...Wouldn't it be better if medical innovations came at the rate of telephone innovations?!

Art and the Free Market

David Mamet on why theater is one of the most capitalistic of all art forms - so long as the government doesn't subsidize it:

The theatre is a magnificent example of the workings of that particular bulwark of democracy, the free-market economy. It is the most democratic of arts, for if the play does not appeal in its immediate presentation to the imagination or understanding of a sufficient constituency, it is replaced. The theatre especially exemplifies the democratic free market in that interactions between playgoer and presenter, between consumer and purveyor, are immediate, unfettered, not subject to regulation-interactions do not require verification by third parties (the seller need not explain why he has presented his particular good, the buyer why he has chosen or rejected it). .

...Champions of so-called theory, whether feminist, Marxist, multiculturalist, or other, in an attempt (supposedly) to cleanse expression of bias, are involved in a postmodern rendition of book burning. For the question of art is neither "How does it serve the state?" (Stalinist) nor its wily modification into "How does it serve humanity?" but "How does it serve the audience?"

6 Images That Ruined the People That They Made Famous

The problem was, the raising of the flag was by no means the end of the fighting -- of the six men who appeared in the photo, three wound up getting killed in battle soon thereafter. Fearing that it would be a PR nightmare if all of the men lost their lives, the American military brass decided to pull the survivors out of the war and make them famous. John Bradley and Rene Gagnon were quickly identified and flown home, which left the third and last flag man, Native American Ira Hayes, to become the real life Private Ryan. But Hayes didn't want to be found.

Sure, Hayes knew that staying behind would likely kill him (it was the deadliest battle to date in the Pacific theater), but he didn't want to abandon his fellow men just because someone had taken a cool photo. He allegedly even threatened Gagnon with bodily harm if he named Hayes as the sixth man in the scene. But eventually, pressure from his superiors forced Gagnon to give up Hayes' name, and Hayes was pulled from combat, being a celebrity and all.

Another Sign That The International Red Cross has Too Much Time on its Hands

They now want 'war crimes' punished inside video games.

"The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) wants developers to consider building "virtual consequences" for mayhem into their video games. 'Gamers should be rewarded for respecting the law of armed conflict and there should be virtual penalties for serious violations of the law of armed conflict, in other words war crimes,' read the ICRC's new statement on the matter. 'Game scenarios should not reward players for actions that in real life would be considered war crimes.'

Like many a concerned parent or Congressional committee before it, the ICRC believes that violent video games trivialize armed conflict to the point where players could see various brands of mayhem as acceptable behavior. At the same time, the ICRC's statement makes it clear that the organization doesn't want to be actively involved in a debate over video-game violence, although it is talking to developers about ways to accurately build the laws of armed conflict into games.

Wait - there's a city more abandoned than Detroit?!?

I'm suspecting some technical chicanery is going on here -well unless we're talking East St. Louis. Which I got introduced to late one Saturday night circa 1980 when an unexpected construction detour dumped the family sedan off there. It was an experience seared, seared into my memory.

Star Trek Fan Club Magazines

I actually owned this very magazine as a kid - I think I finagled it from a friend's older brother sometime in 1976. It's easy to forget that for a lot of the 1970s Star Trek fandom was an underground and isolated phenomenon that was almost completely ignored by Hollywood and the media. And run by fans with little hope of ever seeing any more ST episodes or specials. But when I got my hands on this magazine I realized I wasn't alone - there were a lot of other people into Star Trek (and Sci-Fi in general) just as much as I was.

About two years ago, I wrote about the fairly obscure fan magazine, All About Star Trek Fan Clubs (yeah, that was its official title). As I mentioned in that post, AASTFC was published in 1976-1977, ran six (I think) quarterly issues, and received national newsstand distribution.

The rather amateurish - though earnest and enthusiastic - magazine covered Star Trek fandom in all its pre-Internet/home video Seventies forms, with fannish articles on conventions, collectibles, episode trivia, pull-out posters, lots of fan art, interviews with the Trek cast (and prominent "Trekkers!" ), fanzine reviews, and, as its clumsy title promised, extensive fan club listings.

It was an interesting magazine, and for a rural science fiction fan without access to conventions or fan clubs, it was a window onto a larger world of Trek (and sci-fi)  fandom.

The population that most of those cities lost--in my opinion--was comprised of the hordes of  white  ethnics--those of Southern, Eastern and Central European extraction, overwhelmingly, but not  exclusively Roman Catholic, who fled when  they  moved up the economic  ladder and into the nearby suburbs and/or fled when they were pushed out by "others" and the crime and dysfunction that came along with them. Sorry, but true.

106 What's possibly even more bizarre than the thought of a guy sticking his penis into a toaster is the thought the he believes that ANYONE is going to accept any kind of rationalization for why it happened. 107 They've identified the guy that set himself on fire and died last Friday: MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) — The death of a New Jersey man who set himself on fire on the National Mall was the result of his long fight with mental illness, not a political statement, his family said. John Constantino, 64, of Mount Laurel, N.J., poured the contents of a canister of gasoline on himself in the center portion of the mall Friday afternoon, police said. He then set himself ablaze, with passing joggers taking off their shirts to help put out the flames. "John Constantino was a loving father and husband. His death was not a political act or statement, but the result of his long battle with mental illness," his family said in a statement issued through lawyer Jeffrey Cox. http://tinyurl.com/op8tqbt

I'm suspect some technical chicanery is going on here - The City of St Louis population peaked at just over 856k around 1950 (according to Wikipedia's table of the census data); by 2010 it was down to 318k. That roughly equates to a 63% decline in population. What the figures don't tell you is that almost everyone simply moved over to St Charles County or Jefferson County, or often just out to St Louis County (which does not include the City of St Louis).

192 Military history ancedotes of absolutely no current significance whatsoever: Bunker Hill, 1775: The Patriots narrowly lose, but they win two things in defeat--they prove they can stand toe to toe and not collapse (which is why we celebrate it as a victory); and they so rip apart of Gage's Army that further British offensive action in Boston is impossible (and the memory of the slaughter stays Howe's hand later) Coral Sea, Midway, and Solomons Islands campaigns, 1941-1943: From May, 1942 to mid- 1943 the two pre-war fleets of Japan and the United States fight each other to exhaustion, with little change in territory to show for it. The United States has a completely new fleet of a new ship classes it is building that steamrolls Japan in 1944-5. The Japanese simply never replace their losses, much less expand, having had already fully mobilized all they were probably ever going to be able to.

193 For the population losers, New Orleans is unusual because it didn't primarily involve middle class flight over time or loss of industrial base.  Quite the opposite -- many of the underclass moved away after Katrina, housing projects were torn down, the city accelerated its gentrification, etc.  So, in this case, smaller population translated to better off.

256 The shrinking cities thing is pretty dumb. A much better way to look at population trends is metro areas as defined by the Census Bureau. Most metros in America are broken up into many cities and municipalities. Detroit the City is not the same as Detroit the Metro. Detroit the City has imploded. Detroit the Metro has done much, much better. A lot of those cities that have shrunk the most are because they were boom towns in the early industrial era, but before the big highway buildout. The cities have shrunk since then mainly be people moving to the suburbs, which technically are in different "cities" but not different metros. The city/metro issue causes lots of confusion. It's how you end up with San Antonio being one America's biggest cities by population, but only a medium-size metro. It's because the city limits of San Antonio are quite huge and take up most of the metro. On the other hand you have DC the city with only 600k, but DC the metro with almost 6M people. 10x as many people live in the DC metro as DC proper. There's huge variation in city size because different states have different laws about incorporation. Strict states end up with tiny cities (Virginia), other states end up with big cities. City population is often an arbitrary result of the political history of a metro. But metro population is a better measure that disregards these somewhat arbitrary divisions.

270 Diversity nazis actually give MLB shit for being "too white". Reality is MLB is the sports whose demographics most closely mirrors America's demographics. And whites are actually slightly underrepresented. White, black, asian, and hispanic % in MLB all are fairly close to America's percentages as a whole. Yet MLB is accused of having too few blacks. Meanwhile NBA is 85-90% black and nobody complains about the lack of whites, hispanics, or asians in the NBA.

Also, in recent decades, elite white athletes who are tall switch away from basketball at a young age, under the impression that they are at a disadvantage in basketball. it's why MLB has so many 6'5 white pitchers in recent decades. Same with white tight-ends in the NFL. You also see more and more 6'5 guys in the NHL. In the 60s and 70s those kids would have played basketball. 308 257 The shrinking cities thing is pretty dumb.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at October 08, 2013 11:55 PM

Probably the biggest differential is the City of Miami vs the Miami-Dade Metro area.

The city of Miami has about 400,000 people in 34 square miles. The Miami-Dade Metro which include Broward and parts of Palm Beach counties contains around 6 million

Tampa has 340,000 and St Pete around 275,000. the Tampa Metro area has around 3.5 million

Orlando has a population of 250,000 and a metro of 2.3 million

Posted by: kbdabear at October 08, 2013 08:19 PM (aTXUx)

This epitomizes the silliness of the Diversity Nazis as MLB is heavily Hispanic, with quite a few of those Hispanics represented by Dominicans and Cubans who are Spanish in name only, with lineage nearly unbroken to West Africa

I don't want to speak for such a large group, but I will say there was a lot more active and obvious support for the CiC on my last deployment.   I got over here in Oct '08, so there was a lot of happiness, both with the locals and certain segments of servicemembers.  We don't talk about it so much now, but the main sentiment is, "I can't believe we're just sitting around waiting till we can go home next year, based on some random date that a politician pulled out of his ass."

340 Diversity Nazis also don't bother to check into the pathways to major sports

The NFL and NBA offer 4 years of college with star treatment, and then immediate employment with a big contract if drafted

MLB is a longer haul through small cities with harder conditions and low pay. A really good HS draftee will spend a minimum of 3 years in the minors, a top college draftee will spend 1 1/2 years.

Many black kids want that instant gratification with the entourage and instant big money along with a rap album

That's why I'm seeing a lot of black MLB players with much higher character and much fewer  behavioral problems than you see with the NBA or NFL players. They were by nature more patient and didn't get the big money fast and easy

344 The point of the "plimsoll lines" on Brit bar cups (no glassware anymore -- too dangerous in a fight) is that the quantity of a pour is enforced by government regulation. You can't go elsewhere and get more for the same amount. HM's Govt is of the opinion that an extra ounce in a pint is what gets you. Bear in mind that a traditional pint, by Imperial tradition, would be 20 oz in the US. This is how great civilizations pass on.

Bloomberg did this with "long shots" in NYC, too. There are municipal employees whose job it is to go into a bar, order a shot, and make sure there isn't 1.5 oz of liquor in that glass. Some job huh.

362 I just find the sports stuff interesting. It's also one of the places where human biodiversity is so obvious, yet many (especially on the Left) refuse to notice. So it can be funny to watch their overly complex logic as they refuse to notice what's in front of there eye. For example, as of 2010, the 10 second barrier had been broken in the 100M sprint 446 times in the history of the world -- 445 of those times by a man of West African descent. This is because the genes for elite sprinting are present at a higher rate in West African populations than any other ethnic groups in the world. And occasionally one of them hits the genetic lottery and gets all the good sprinting genes at once -- like Usain Bolt. He has to practice to maximize his potential, of course. But if he didn't hit the genetic lottery, practice wouldn't help. And you can only inherit genes that are part of your gene pool. Most people, especially on the Left, still have it as an unpossible thought that, hey, maybe 99% of the world's elite sprinters are of west african descent (though from many different countries - USA, Jamaica, Canada, UK, France, Nigera) because ... they just have better genes for sprinting than other ethnic groups. A pretty straightforward explanation. All these great sprinters who grow up in very different cultures - UK, US, Jamaica, France. Their only common trait being their shared ethnicity. Damn sure ain't no elite Kenyan sprinters. Best evidence of Obama being half-Kenyan is watching him play basketball. Dude cannot run or jump. Maybe could have run a decent 5k when he was younger, though.

A lot of cool stuff has already been done. There are certain issues American scientists are afraid to investigate. But Chinese scientists don't have the same hang-ups. Anything we don't research they will, so it'll still be discovered relatively soon. It'll be fun.

373 European DNA analysis is getting so good it'll be able to tell us what villages our ancestors came from. There are really cool genetic distance charts. Computers automatically sort DNA by the two largest factors, find clusters, plot it on an X-Y map and it basically recreates a map of the world. All without the algorithm being told anything about ethnic groups. Each society often has kinda silly and arbitrary rules about who belongs in what group (like the stupid one-drop rule), but there is an underlying genetic structure to humanity that can be objectively measured.

Any person with problems staying on the clean side will tend to wash out in a minor league system. They don't live in a controlled environment and any problems have nasty consequences they can't easily wiggle out of.

A college athlete tends to be kept in a controlled environment and if the problems aren't chronic or egregious, it can be taken care of. Once in the big leagues with lots of money and their own place and time, they end up in Ray Lewis World if they think they're still invincible

385 Wouldn't matter if basketball was popular in Kenya or not. Of course, people gravitate to sports they have some natural talent for. Same holds true for ethnic groups. Sprinting is not popular in Kenya because Kenyans are naturally, genetically pretty bad at sprinting. Long distance running is popular in Kenya because Kenyans are naturally, genetically, very good at long distance running. A Kenyan who hits the genetic lottery and gets all the good sprinting genes in the Kenyan gene pool might be a half-decent sprinter, perhaps. But a Kenyan who hits the genetic lottery and gets all the good long distance running genes floating in the Kenyan gene pool can be a world class distance runner. Best way for Kenya to get a world class sprinter is convince some Jamaicans to move there.

398 There's a cool new paper out Long-term barriers to growth Enrico Spolaore, Romain Wacziarg, 3 October 2013 Neat thing is it shows how genetic difference is a major barrier to trade in ideas, as opposed to goods. It looked at industrial revolution era data. Neat thing was that it showed that the spread of ideas was much more a factor of genetic distance than geographic distance. Genes matter. Bit from the author about a previous paper: Enrico Spolaore October 7, 2013 at 7:05 pm Good question. In our article “The Diffusion of Development” (QJE, May 2009, http://sites.tufts.edu/enricospolaore/files/2012/08/The-Diffusion-of-Development.pdf ), Romain Wacziarg and I discuss the relation between genetic distance and linguistic distance, and study the effect of relative genetic distance on income differences when controlling for measures of linguistic distance (and religious distance) (pp. 504-514). We conclude (p. 512): “In summary, using the best available measures of linguistic and religious distance, the effect of genetic distance on income differences is reduced by about 12%, but the effect remains large and significant. Overall, these results are consistent with our interpretation: when we measure some specific differences in vertically transmitted traits, such as in language or religion, we obtain a reduction in the size of the coefficient on genetic distance, suggesting that genetic distance was capturing some of the barrier effects associated with differences in these vertical characteristics. However, the reduction is not large enough to suggest that genetic distance only captures the effect of linguistic and religious distance. On the contrary, the reduction is relatively modest, and the effect of genetic distance remains large and significant even when controlling for linguistic and religious distance. This suggests that language and religion are but two of the many vertical characteristics that differ across populations, and perhaps not the most important barriers to the diffusion of economic development.”

Probably because they love the sport and start playing in leagues at a very young age. One doesn't have to be unusually tall, fast, nor muscular to excel at the game, just very good hand-eye coordination or mechanics which enables a small guy like Pedro Martinez to throw a pitch at 98 MPH

409 Isn't that the fucking truth. A friend of mine got fucked with big time because his car tire was caught in one of those depressions left by constant tractor trailer use, the kind that basically steers your car where it wants you to go. Fucking cop pulled him right over and ripped his car apart.
Posted by: Berserker at October 09, 2013 01:24 AM

One thing to be careful about. NJ cops love to trail you for a long time at night and they look to see if you're watching them in your rearview mirrors. What they'll do is maneuver their car over the yellow line knowing that the driver will tend to follow the lights in the mirror without thinking about it. Once you follow the maneuver they hit the lights and pull you over for driving over the yellow line

That's if you can even see the fucking yellow lines at night to begin with since they only repaint them every 25 years or so, and replace the cat eye reflectors every 35 years or so. If the road is wet the lines are invisible so you try to guess if you're still in your own lane

I think, as does he, he'll get yet another case of pneumonia & will have such a high fever he'll go into a coma & die. Now he is a quadriplegic he could walk &0 move fine, with pain, until Thales strep infections. I sometimes don't read all the comments, but that stood out. I didn't post anything here about him until we were discussing Terrorist #2 in the hospital from Boston Marathon, they use same drug that killed M Jackson to keep patients sedated to stay on ventilator.

414 Black NBA players actually come from, on average, richer, better educated families than the average black family. More likely to have a father at home as well. The inner-city basketball stereotype isn't really that accurate. A kid with elite talent will generally be identified by the time he's 13 or so, and spend his time with highly organized elite AAU teams, camps, and high schools. If a kid is still playing inner-city street ball at the age of 15 ... it's because he's not very good.

I'm tired of being an artist.  Way back when, I took a course in economics.  For my project, I argued vigorously against government art support.  The instructor, who was pretty conservative, was surprised, figuring that as a painter, I'd naturally be supportive of whatever money I could suck out of government.  He suggested I run for political office.

I've been arguing for years that Christianized parts of the world developed Science and Advanced technology because Christianity provided a relatively stable social structure in which ideas and research could prosper and be passed down.

Egypt and China both had very old civilizations, but they never advanced technologically much past the Roman era.  (Till relatively recently, and only then by copying the works of the Christianized Nations.)

There's something about Christian Society that advances the rights of man and the wonders of Science.  Whoda thunk?

458 The thought occurred to me this am that with the 17% shutdown (my, how large your tentacles are), the US hasn't fallen apart -- far from it. In fact, the parts that are working the worst are those still technically unfunded, like the Park Service. Note that the military is funded.

It's almost as if the people could rule themselves quite effectively. For example, with the death benefit denied to those 4 soldiers' families, a private individual stepped forward to see that they were covered. The Post Office is still delivering mail, and could be breaking even if Congress let them manage themselves as a business.

Then there is 404Care, which is technically unfunded yet is 'essential', and is failing like a motherfucker. For over 200 years Americans have been taking care of their health care needs but with way too much interference; yet now they've got the dial set to 11.

Keep up the intransigence Dingy and JugEars; the citizens are learning a valuable lesson, just not the one you think.

Years ago I read a book called "Relativity for the Millions".  In it was a metaphorical example regarding the Aether Theory.  The point was that the Aether theory was unnecessary to carry light.

Atlas was found wandering and a local scientists asked him why he was not at his job holding up the world.  Atlas replied that he had been weary holding it up so long so he put it down.  The Scientist asked him "What happened?"  And Atlas replied "Absolutely nothing. "

As you said, the public may be learning a very different lesson than that which the SCFOAMF wanted them to learn.

We had tyranny under Kings who believed they ruled by God's divine grant of power, but even they were constrained in what they would do, and what they could get away with.

Amoral Atheistic societies had no such constraints.  This is why Stalin, Mao, and I throw Hitler in there too,  murdered over 100 million people inn a few decades.
