Well, we are starting to get into the peak period for the Perseid meteor shower. Hopefully, the clouds will clear up enough in my location to take a look. I did learn today though that you can possibly catch some meteors called earthgrazers between 9:30 and 10:30 PM. Here is video of one that occurred last night over New Mexico. Be sure to have your volume up. These earthgrazers make some eerie sounds caused by television signals bouncing of the ionized tail of the meteor. Bacon Shoes
Bacon shoes. I'd be afraid my dog would eat 'em.

Pole Dancing

I'm telling you, it's going to be an Olympic event soon. Pole dancers buff image with rules and a dress code.
Ginger Pride

The gingers are coming! The gingers are coming! I'm totally down with this. Way better than those other pride type marches.

Petition
Heh. The People's Cube has a petition on the White House site requesting an exemption for ALL Americans from Obamacare.
Family Feud Video
Heh.
USAF Drug Runnin'
Hmmmm. I think I know why the sequester hasn't hurt as much now. Air Force flying 24 tons of cocaine to Miami. To destroy they say. Uh-uh. A now the furloughs are being lifted sooner than anticipated? Coincidence? I think not.
Most Stolen Signs In The U.S.

Heh. Most stolen road signs.
Apparently, this street got its name because a woman lived on the street named Katie and the "crotch" was the name of the v-shaped intersection in the road. Sound suspicious to me. This sign gets stolen so often that, earlier this year, the town had a vote whether to rename it. Even though it cost them $200 to replace it each time, they decided to stick with Katie's Crotch.
Ammo Joke
How bad is the ammo shortage? This bad.
Nuts
This Chinese man has no idea how to argue with his wife correctly. Man cuts off testicle during argument with wife. I don't see how he thought he was going to win this way.
Mrs Tang told her husband that she would now only have sex with Mr Tang just once a year until he finally bought her a home. The Tangs continued to have arguments for several weeks, until August 2, when their disagreement escalated to such an extent that Mr Tang grabbed his razor and then cut off one of his testicles in protest.

Meanwhile, in Scandi land, Scandinavian men are warned of testicle eating fish. So they recommend keep on wearing your swimtrunks. Um, really?
"The pacu is not normally dangerous to people but it has quite a serious bite, there have been incidents in other countries, such as Papua New Guinea where some men have had their testicles bitten off," said Henrik Carl, fish expert at the Danish museum. While Carl said the museum's warning about the pacu, sometimes known as the "ball cutter", was meant "as a bit of fun", human victims of the pacu are rarely laughing.
"They bite because they're hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth," he explained.
Coffee Booze
This just might be my new breakfast drink. Scientists turn used coffee grounds into booze. Smells like coffee? Check. Tastes like coffee? Check. Has alcohol in it? Check. Just need a chocolate donut with it in the morning and I'm good to go.

After it went to shit with New Caprica there were really only two good parts. Galactica FTL Jump into and out of the atmosphere, and the cover of All Along the Watchtower. The rest was crap, and the ending still pisses me off majorly.

Yeah, Bear McCreary did some nice stuff with it. I have like 4 of the soundtracks to BSG. He is also doing The Walking Dead. Hope he releases a soundtrack to that.
The music with that BSG video above isn't Bear though. Tons of stuff out there with this "Epic" vibe. Some pretty good stuff too. Excellent to work out to.

I don't think that was the BSG music in that mash-up above. The score was done by Bear McCreary and it was all that tribal drum stuff. It was different when I first saw it, with the shaky cam footage and all the dogfighting. But then it got old.
Also, just how did the Galactica keep replacing all their Vipers? They had maybe a dozen or so at the beginning after the shiny new ones were all wiped out from the Cylon hax. In one ep, Adama is trying to raid a Cylon fuel station and Dr. Gaius asks where the reserve Vipers are. Adama says there are no reserve Vipers and "everything we have is on the board".

Do a Web search for "electrolytic rust removal". Basically, you immerse the rusty piece in a tub filled with a solution of washing soda (sodium carbonate, a mild base), and also a piece of scrap steel or stainless steel, to serve as an anode. Connect the negative cable from a 12 volt battery charger or other husky 12 volt source to the workpiece, and the positive cable to the anode. The workpiece and anode must not touch each other, and it's best if the cable clips not be immersed in the soup.
This is a little tedious to set up, and you may need a large tub, wading pool maybe? But there is essentially zero elbow grease involved; electricity does all the work, and the result, after rinsing with clear water, is a surface free of rust and loose paint, and ready for new paint.

Back when BSG was rebooted and the series just about to start, Breitbart caught a special PR event for the show where Dirk Benedict and Katee Sackhoff both met at a Starbucks coffee.
That's right! Starbuck and Starbuck at Starbucks!!! Fucking genius!
After Dirk did the event, he later said that changing his old character into a woman in the show was a huge mistake. Fans would not like it, he said. Ehh. I liked what Katee did with her role, but the character of Starbuck in the reboot ended up a gigantic mystery as to exactly what she was. Angel?

Rust reminds me of something at work--we used to have issues with parts shipped to us prerusted. Especially brake rotors.
Long story short, the vendor changed the rust preventative
coatings in an attempt to fix it.
Inside each box was a paper explaining what was being used.
So we asked what to clean them off with, our normal solvents didn't touch the stuff.
Answer came back, use warm water.
Turns out it was water soluble rust preventative.

The new BSG should have ended at Season Two. Starbuck had grown up by then. And she had the last word: "we stay and fight".
Thus transforming her into an elegaic hero.

I've had two. The first was a B&D. which I loved, but had battery trouble and I was too impatient to wait for repairs. I swapped it out for an even more powerful Craftsman that I despised. I finally parked the Craftsman by the curb this week after 2 years sitting in my garage sucking up energy.
I'm eagerly awaiting my new B&D.
Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at August 10, 2013 11:29 PM (jjvz+)
We have had a corded B/D since we moved into this house in 97, and it's done very well -- but we've since planted two trees in the front yard and now you get to do grad-level topology problems when you mow in order to avoid tying yourself into knots. One more tree, and I'd have to mow into the fourth dimension to make it work.

And friends give me their castoffs, and I fix them up, too. I have three acres of grass to mow, too. I have a 6' rough-cut mower for the tractor if it really gets out of hand, but normally I use the Dixon ZTR rider, and a walk-behind for tight places. And a weed whacker.

Well, first off, _The Great Escape_ film is bunk, unfortunately.
Second, was the actual historical escape "heroic shit"? It absolutely was.
The actual historical escape got the escapers illegally executed without trial -- on the personal order of Adolf Hitler -- because of the panicked effect that the escape created.
Most of Nazi Europe abruptly ground to a halt while every single available military and civilian asset had to be pressed into service to find the escapers. Requiring substantial diversion of effort from the multiple war fronts the Nazis were trying to manage. Transportation stopped. Communications were locked down. Everyone had to produce their papers. It had a hugely disproportionate effect relative to its modest size.
Those who were shot, The Fifty, did their duty as officers in wartime behind enemy lines. It was their duty to try to escape, no matter what. Jamming what they had into the enemy war machinery to slow it down. What they had were their own persons and nothing more. Knowing that, they went anyway.
Don't watch the bunk Hollyweird movie. Read Peter Brickhill's memoir.

Of course! Did anyone ever expect anything different from the Obama EPA?
And while this laughable travesty has no more useful future than did the Detroit People Mover, the rest of America are going to get presented with the tab for building Commiefornia some high speed rail, courtesy of the Obama administration.
Seriously, that is the plan. If you do NOT want your grandchildren stuck shouldering the two hundred billion bucks to build HSR in Commiefornia, then you better be on those phones first thing on Monday morning, giving your Congresscritters an earful about it.
The way to go is to force CA to finance the whole catastrophe at the state level with state-issued bonds with no federal help. This will further accelerate the slide into the financial abyss for Commiefornia.
But if the rest of the country doesn't rise up in outrage, I absolutely flatly guarantee you that the Obama administration and CA's governor Jerry Moonbeam Brown can and will stick you with the bill for building out the "Brown Streak".

In Calgary, there is a shop that will rent you time on a commercial-scale sandblasting station in their compound. About $70/hour, last time I used it. But you can get a LOT done in an hour with a one-inch blast nozzle. They provide gloves and an air-supplied respirator hood and helmet. Key techniques is to keep back a foot or two, and keep the sand stream moving. Holding it still on one stubborn spot will warp sheet metal for sure. It's actually kind of fun to do. Closest thing you will ever experience to having a magic wand. Rust and dirt vanish before your eyes. Sandblasting does not work well on greasy, gooey dirt; the sand just embeds in it. But paint, rust, corrosion, and powder coat are all amenable to abrasive blast removal.

I own a similar needle scaler, and it is useful, but realistically, you will need a 5 horsepower compressor to run it for more than a minute or two at a stretch. And that means a 5 HP compressor running on 240 volts. 5HP compressors rated at 120 volts are not really 5 horsepower.

It drives the multiple needles onto the surface to break the rust scale off. then you can stabilize or remove the remaining rust with chemically and paint over it. Way less messy than sand blasting. I have used Naval jelly to remove remaining rust and a product that chemically changes rust from an oxide. Point being any rust left behind will bubble the paint again.

I own a similar needle scaler, and it is useful, but realistically, you will need a 5 horsepower compressor to run it for more than a minute or two at a stretch.>>
Yes if I was scaling rust off a boat hull you are correct but spot treating wrought iron furniture should not need that kind of compressor. And 240 volt aint nearly as common as it used to be.

Muffler or pipe?
If Muffler, get J B weld and plug that puppy up.
If Pipe:
Get some cans (this used to last longer when you could get cans that were thicker and steel)
cut off the ends and slice long ways.
Wrap them around pipe where break is
get metal tape used for heating/ac duct
wrap tightly and run out beyond where cans end.
This will still make noise due to the amount of pressure but it will get you by until whatever.
Make sure muffler and pipe are well hung. (huh huh huh)

Define "temp"....if it's "gets you past the ticket-hungry state patrols for 300 miles until you can get home and have your own mechanic fix it while you're at work instead of letting it fuck my vacation sideways", that's a definite "maybe". If it's "let me deal with this in the spring", probably not.

I applaud the new volunteer military and counsel anyone joining the military to discover the true conditions under which you will serve.
It ain't as glamorous as exciting as recruiters try to make it. (or at least they used to as they were required to meet quotas or they would lose their shore berth. Telling, that)
I don't regret it but I wish I had been more knowledgeable about what was in store and been better prepared.

I haven't watched enough to really have an idea ...
There was one I really liked of Advent Children - haven't had any luck finding it again.
Dunno. Ask me about webcomics. = P

Then, she goes toward the couch, and...puts her front paws on the top cushion.
She doesn't jump the whole way, of course, but instead slides over to be petted.
Can this stuff really work?
NOTE: the "she" and "her" refer to a tiger tabby cat, not a kidnapped human.

Slowin' the pace.....
A REIT is the virtual form of a rental -- if you had one good property and leased it to one good tenant, you'd be ahead of a REIT....but (supposedly) they've amassed a plethora of tenants and have mathematically ensured that their loss exposure is on-track to where their yields will be good.

I guess it's time for a long walk while listening to an audio book. Fortunately, it's safe to do that in this neighborhood.

Just found out from a lefty friend at Facebook that the legendary far-left radio network, Pacifica, is going completely bankrupt. In fact someone actually posted video on YouTube from today of them in their car, tuning into KPFK, Pacifica's Los Angeles station, and they heard... nothing. Dead air. Complete silence.
(By the way, said lefty friend is perfectly fine with Pacifica's demise. He thinks they were a bunch of insane nutjobs anyway.)

But the KPFK live stream is still going and I cannot find any evidence thus far that it isn't business as usual over there. The Twitter timeline indicates there was some sort of address given by a high mucky-muck today but I haven't any transcript.

Maybe he's got something there. Every time I see Obama eating an ice cream cone I think that perhaps there's something to it.

That's the true aim of ObamaCare...to remove that "inequity" (unless you're a member of Congress or one of the other privileged classes in our brave new world). Now you selfish bastards can no longer spend your own money on yourself as you see fit. You will be forced to pool your resources so that we all may be equal. Naturally, "equal" will be defined by the experts in DC, who won't be subject to their own brand of "fairness".
Seconded!
I always read the gaming thread, and not just the comments. It's the weekly thread I look forward to most. Keep it up, you are appreciated.
