If you listen to artists, writers, academics and journalists, you would think that thousands of them operate in a radical underground. They say the right things. They 'speak truth to power', 'transgress boundaries', and all the rest of it. But you will have noticed that they are careful only to challenge religions that won't hurt them (Christianity) and governments that won't arrest them (democracies).
And here is where the Great Revolution begins:
Yes, that's right, the revolution starts here - in some Third World sweatshop! But, alas, not in the way that Leftists have traditionally fantasized about: the bloody uprising, the cowed elite, the self-appointed and strangely middle-class functionaries of the proletarian dictatorship coldly dispensing "justice."
The workers are busy. They have orders to fill, and there won't be a "revolution" unless the young Western leftists get their silly masks to give them a sense of fake camaraderie and being part of the night.
Today most 'radicals' on the left are merely engaged in dissident role-playing along with a bit of revolutionary cosplay and puppetry.
Useful Term of the Day: Caplanization
Caplanization is the process by which the proponents of a particular policy (in this case unrestricted immigration) argue for it in such a manner than virtually all reasonable people are attracted to the opposite position.
Is Bullying Heading Up the Shark Ramp?
Well it does seem that the usual suspects have glommed onto the anti-bullying bandwagon and are now using the term as just another synonym for 'being offended by someone'.
Case in point: Moms Demand anti-gun activists who claim they were 'bullied' by open-carry activists in Dallas. Here's a picture they released of the open-carriers intimidating and 'bullying' people.
And here's another picture showing the same exact scene as posed for Moms Demand. Bullying content: Zero.
Venezuela Goes Full Banana Republic
President Maduro ordered the government-sanctioned looting of an electronics chain for charging 'too much'.
Thousands of Venezuelans lined up outside the country's equivalent of Best Buy, a chain of electronics stores known as Daka, hoping for a bargain after the socialist government forced the company to charge customers "fair" prices..Members of Venezuela's National Guard, some of whom carried assault rifles, kept order at the stores as bargain hunters rushed to get inside.
"I want a Sony plasma television for the house," said Amanda Lisboa, 34, a business administrator, who had waited seven hours already outside one Caracas store. "It's going to be so cheap!"
.The president, who took over from Hugo Chávez in April 2013, appeared on state television Friday calling for the "occupation" of the chain, which employs some 500 staff.
"This is for the good of the nation," Maduro said. "Leave nothing on the shelves, nothing in the warehouses . Let nothing remain in stock!"
.Daka's store managers, according to Maduro, have been arrested and are being held by the country's security services. Neither Daka nor the government responded to requests for comment.
Why France Said 'Non' to the Iran Deal
Because they know from experience that the Israelis mean what they say and will act accordingly; Obama and his feckless advisors not so much.
Though few people remember nowadays, in 1967, Paris occupied much the same position that Washington occupies now with respect to Israel: Not only was France Israel's chief arms supplier and Security Council patron, but it was the only country willing to supply Israel with essential equipment such as fighter jets. Israel's air force fought the Six-Day War with French Mirages; only the following year, in 1968, did America for the first time agree to sell it Phantom jets.Consequently, Charles de Gaulle had every reason to think that when he spoke, Israel would listen. And the French president's message in 1967 was unequivocal: Under no circumstances must Israel launch a preemptive strike; if it did, it could kiss French patronage goodbye. Israel heard the message loud and clear-and preempted anyway. Facing what it deemed an existential threat, it decided that even the loss of its sole military supplier was the lesser evil.
France knows that today, Israel deems Iran's nuclear program an existential threat. France also knows that Israel would probably risk less by defying the Obama administration than it did by defying France in 1967: De Gaulle severed the military relationship completely, refusing even to deliver planes and gunboats Israel had already paid for, at a time when Israel had no assurance that Washington would fill the gap; today, given Israel's strong support in Congress, a similarly total American arms embargo seems unlikely. As a result, France may understand what Washington seems not to: that utterly disregarding Israel's concerns about Iran could push it to preempt despite its patron's objections, just as it did in 1967.
In fact French help in the 1960s is the main reason that Israel has nuclear weapons.

Heed this lesson from 'nearly called stubs' Tom.
The average 10 inch table saw blade has an edge traveling at around 103 mph, or 166 kmh. As [Tom] demonstrates in his video, it's just not possible for a person to react fast enough to avoid injury. Please, both personal users and hackerspaces, understand general safety with all the tools you're using, and use proper safety equipment. As for [Tom], he's learned his lesson, and is now using a SawStop Table.

Vagisil: Weapon of the Patriarchy
It's tough being a feminist perpetual victim when you're beset on all sides by hate and misogyny along with oppression by creams and ointments.
What Vagisil does is pretend to be our friend, helping us deal with this smell that's been plaguing our social life; in reality they are manipulating us into thinking we stink in the first place. adding yet another paranoia to the long list carried around by the 21st century woman trying to survive in a system that teaches them to hate themselves.
...I'm not buying Vagisil. Ever.
But it's not like men don't have their own struggles with hygiene advertising...
This is one of those disturbing ideas that would never occur in a normal brain - but once you've heard of it, you'll never ever be able to get it out of yours. You have been warned.

Evening morons, heya Peaches!
Update: Koda, our St. Bernard, is still at the vet (almost 48 hours now). Has not stood since they gave her the seizure medication, although no more seizures either. Tomorrow we are trying to get her seen by a canine neurologist to figure out what exactly is going on. She did walk after the seizures 2 nights ago before the medications, so not clear if it's the medicine, pain and fear of falling again, or an actual neurologic problem.

He's juicing to stay healthy and strong. He is a huge guy naturally, and doesn't need to bulk up. That's the benefit of a good biochemist who understands how to design the steroids, and give them in the right combinations, and with the right timing.
Lance Armstrong went years without getting caught once. Why do you think that Ortiz or Pujols were never nailed? Same idea. Experts who can stay ahead of the testers.

Talk shit about A-Rod all you want (and it will be true), but the man is a technically great baseball player.
He can't handle the pressure so will never be in the pantheon, but he has a sweet swing, could run when he was young, could go to his left and right as well as anyone in baseball, has an excellent and accurate arm, and understands how to play the game.

Heh...I was just thinking about a radial arm saw we used for years. If you were careful there was no problem, but we had some times that we were in a hurry. Closest call was when my buddy was cutting something way to close and the saw blade left its imprint in his fingernail. That was the last cut we made that day lol.

They are making cocktails of HGH and anabolic steroids (at much lower doses than in year's past) that maintain a high level. And they can clear the metabolites with other hormones and drugs much better than even a few years ago.
They aren't building as much bulk, but they are building cross-sectional area of dense muscle, and that = power and speed.

Yep. Pharmaceutical companies spent a lot of the 50s and 60s playing around with testosterone and similar compounds trying to make the 'perfect' steroid that built up muscle without any side-effects. They never found it but they did discover some steroids with more specific effects such as increased strength and/or fat-loss with less muscle growth.

Glanced at the posts below before I go reload some .357. Amusing, I guess, to see the ridiculous affirmative action non-entity in the WH doing poorly in polling.
So what? Even if part of the electorate - thanks to the 2X4 smacking them directly in the face - has an epiphany ("ooh, Obamacare is bad, it's not magic and free like they said! I'm so upset!"), it's still the same doorknob-dumb electorate that would even consider (much less RE-ELECT) this catastrophic embarrassment. I'm talking, as always, not about the "FSA" that so many fixate on, but the "educated" populace, most of which is doorknob-dumb when it comes to politics and public policy, knows only what the utterly collapsed media lets them know, and "thinks" mostly what the politicized and cretinized popular culture (incl. "elite") lets them think.
No longer a serious country. Not even close. People really think that there will be significant improvement from the voting booth, any time soon?
Rhetorical question, obviously.

They have some really shitty ones, but none with the riving knife, only the old style safety guard that you have to remove to do anything useful.
So right now i am seeing if i can get by without. I used an old crafstman for years with no safety features, but when i started looking i kept seeing comments by people that lost fingers and now swear by the electronic braking saws. It made me think twice and think i at least want the riving knife.

Something truly worries me about the modern military that I'm not sure is a real problem or not. It just seems like the greater the technology, the more oversight and info we have of the battlefield, and the greater connections, in a way we're producing poorer warriors.
What I mean is this: any major decision has to be okayed by an eye on the sky. Drone pilots don't decide to shoot any targets, no matter what the opportunity is. Pilots have to get an okay to engage anything. Because the communications are so good and the command post knows so well what is going on everywhere, they control the soldiers at the point of the spear to a degree greater than ever before.
So that means the anal by the book officer is in charge, not the non coms and soldiers actually in the field. The decisions are made more and more by politics and people not directly at stake, not the people out there taking fire.
And that strikes me as... very bad. Not just bad for the battlefield and overall strategy, but for the lessons learned in terms of independence and facing the hard decisions in fire that bring great leaders back home.
Am I just totally off base here or is there something to my concerns?

They had a ton of pieces, mostly G-19s. They had Gen 1 and Gen 2 models going for $100 less, but I wanted the thumb groove and better grip. Some of the grips were in bad shape, but the dealer behind the counter and I looked at several and took the best looking of the bunch. I was sorely tempted to get a new G-22 or -23 in OD, but it would have been a couple hundred more, and the .40 ammo is pricier. I'm hoping to use this piece to build proficiency and possibly a winter carry as well, will need to look into a subcompact or a single stack for summer carry most likely.

Yeah, it's pretty much like that with most teachers. They're going through the lessons by the book. Where are you up to in playing? I wouldn't worry too much about theory until you're up to playing songs/tunes with ease and fluency. You can get a bit mired tackling theory too early. Are you already up to jamming and or band playing yet? You could find some good theory stuff on youtube.

Where I don't do well is basic technique -- especially soloing with a pick. And I just don't have an intuitive sense of the fretboard that allows me to build chords without having them down by rote memorization or simple muscle memory.
Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at November 12, 2013 08:48 PM (m0h0I)
If you already know scales, it's not too hard to figure out how that applies to standard chords, as in the 1, 3, 5 note groupings. A wheel of fifths is great to see how the major and minor chords are related. Once you get that, you can start throwing in the more unusual chords.
I'd recommend practicing scales with some bends thrown in if you want to get good at soloing.

I guess my stumbling block is teasing out how to play a lead or melody within a chord progression. I mean, I can play within a given key, but it sounds like complete garbage because I don't have the skill to play intuitively along with a chord progression. It just sounds like random notes going nowhere.

I'm a big fan of Pete Anderson, who used to play with Dwight Yoakam. I can sing and play the rhythm part of just about any of his songs, but when the solo starts, and I hear all the funky chords, it just pisses me off.
It's just that I'm not looking to learn by literally copying what the original player did. But, I want to learn how to play within a given style. I'll never play like Yngwie Malmsteen, obviously -- but I'd love to know how he applies the different scale modes to what he does in order to achieve the feel of what he does.

Don't underestimate rote memorization and muscle memory! Sounds like you're at the point where some serious theory won't hamper you and will really help to become a better guitarist, so tackle that shit if you're so inclined. That being said, depending on how much time you're putting in on a daily/weekly basis, I'd focus more on your technique, if that 's where you're feeling the restraint. If you've got shit loads of guitar time to spend, grab some of that theory and work on it. If you're not playing a lot... use the time you have to concentrate on technique. Seriously, it makes a bigger difference in getting better, to play it well, without knowing what the fuck you're doing, than knowing what makes an Am an Am, if you're still struggling to put some shit together.
What I mean is, once you've gotten your technique down, the theory should come much, much easier and you will probably advance at a greater rate. Again, it depends on the time you can afford to put in. Also, don't worry too much about solos and picking just yet. Nail your rythm shit down and work on picking as gravy, rather than the objective. If you spend too much time on your lead, you'll never quite reach the kickass level as a rythm player first. Played rythm well is often overlooked. But, what do I know? Some of the other more accomplished guitar people will probably have better advice. I'm one that always struggled with the "theory" and fancy lead playing and worked on technique.
Posted by: otho at November 12, 2013 09:13 PM (9gNQd)
Are you familiar with the wheel of fifths? At the 12 o'clock is C Major, 1 o'clock is G Major, or the fifth note in the key of C, then D Major, the fifth of G, etc. The other way from C is F, the fourth note of C, and so on so it's sometimes called the wheel of fourths. You play those chords, you have a song. Now look below the C Major, you have an A Minor. Look at the notes that make up each scale, they're identical, just sequenced differently. Play any variation of C Major, A Minor, F Major, and G Major, you've got a hundred hit songs.
Guitar is great for learning what the harmonic sequence has to do with music as well, you should be familiar with your harmonics. Note how the twelfth fret is exactly halfway from the nut to the bridge, the seventh fret is one third, and the fifth is one quarter, all of them have harmonics. Remember that a full octave contains 12 notes, 5 and 7 is 12. It doesn't really add a lot to your playing, but it's interesting stuff if you're into the theory of why things sound good.

and how to apply it practically . . . at least well enough to credibly
improvise a simple solo and build on that foundation. I had some music
theory way back in high school, and played sax for six years, so I have a
fair grasp of music. But, I've forgotten a lot, and have never learned
how to apply any of it to the guitar.
Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at November 13, 2013 12:41 AM (m0h0I)
Yeah, 2 schools of thought on that one. I have pretty much played with all calibers of musicians over the years from hacks to pros. "Generally"
speaking, the ones who used theory to improvise their solos usually
sounded a little 1 dimensional and cliche, while the dudes who pulled
their solos from within themselves were usually the ones that sounded
good. I guess what I'm saying is a great solo won't come from a book,
but comes from inside you, and what you really need to learn is how to
bring whats in your head TO the fingerboard. That is the hardest part in the beginning, and only comes from constant playing, and trial and
error, but that will ultimately result in you sounding like YOU. Soloing is basically freestyle, you need to hear it in your head first. Knowing your way around the fretboard takes time, but it WILL become instinctive. If you have a good ear you have half the battle won.

When I think of soloing (and that's generally as far as it goes, 'cause my technique on any instrument "esta muy suckamundo"), I'm of two minds -- on the one hand, I'm thinking of notes within the current chord's scale or, when modulating to a different chord, the shared notes and 'graceful slurs' [e.g. F -> G7 -> C....while in F, noodle around the F scale, with emphasis on F, A, C, E flat....while changing F -> G7, stick to G, A, C, D, E (shared notes) and think of graceful slurs from B flat -> B or F -> F# {probably not, since it's G7}....in G7, emphasize G, B, D, F....] -- and on the other hand, I'm trying to capture in an instrument what I'd do if I was whistling along with the tune.
Needless to say, I can't do solos in a "pickup band" environment.

1000 times this. One guitar player I played with for years spent 90% of his time learning leads. His rhythm suffered like you wouldn't believe. I'm talking metal, but you need very fast picking and a sledge hammer right wrist to pound the strings. He listened to all the wrong players as far as I was concerned, players that weren't known for their rhythm ability. He liked George Lynch, excellent player, but not the dude thats gonna teach you to burn out a Slayer rhythm, or any thrash or speed metal. He liked Van halen, same deal. He spent all his time trying to master the "flash" and let his rhythm slip into the void. He ended up with serious rhythm deficiencies to where he wouldn't even be able to play the shit I would write, forget about following me on a shred harmony. Not a good place to be.

It will come in time. I know very little theory. I never needed it because I developed photographic memory where music is concerned. I hear a song and I can "see" in my head exactly on the fingerboard where the notes are, so I can usually knock a huge chunk of an average song out on the first listen. When I first started learning classical is was soooo far from what I was used to I sounded like a retard. The neck was way wider, so my usual pin point accuracy was in the toilet. Plus, I held a pick for years, so having to open my hand and actually finger pick strings was a huge challenge. As good as my ear is, and as good as my command on electric guitar was, I was a drooling idiot with classical. I sounded nothing like the dude with over 30 years of playing under his belt. I sounded like fucking rain man. It took a year just to get my bearings, then it eventually pulled together nice. Basically, you have to play, and play, and play. Find a song you like and absorb it, learn the rhythms, learn the leads, and then go to the next song. You have to play, and that will hone your skills. Learning songs will give you the instincts.

That's the stuff I'm talking about. Unfortunately, what I think I may have signed up for was lessons along the lines of "OK, what song do you want to learn how to play?" What I want is the basic building blocks that will allow me to hear a song I want to play and have a sense of how its done, and then apply that to my own playing.
@ 424 [Berserker] -- I feel like I have a pretty strong sense of rhythm. In fact, that's probably my strongest suit as a player. For a typical pop song without a lot of unusual chords, I can usually figure it out in a few minutes after seeing or teasing out the progressions. So, I'm looking to supplement that with the ability solo credibly, but not necessarily be a lead guitar-type.

What he said. I might have missed it, but what type of music are looking at getting to, DDR? If it's rock, country, blues, pop... etc... you might be overthinking it too early. Guitar for those forms is very different to sax or even piano. Get the feel down, the rhythm, the beat, that stuff. It'll come. Play the shit out of a song that you like until you're got it nailed. Do another. Play, play, play. The fretboard will do your bidding just by rote work. Tame that guitar rather than figure out how it thinks. For now, anyway.

Oddly enough, without the glitch at the B-string it is very easy to pick up the whole fretboard because all the relationships stay the same no matter where you go -- (If you remember Stanley Jordan, I read somewhere that he used to tune his guitar EADGCF for the same reason)
A 5-string bass is also easy in normal tuning -- the B string is the deepest bass on the top, so the same spacial relationships hold true and also never change anywhere on the neck. (BEADG)
So, on a bass, the 4th is always on the string right below any note on the same fret. The 5th is always on the string right above on the same fret. The octaves are always 2 strings down and 2 frets towards the bridge (and obviously the opposite). It is really easy to get those relationships down cold, and then you can find all the other intervals every time without even really thinking about it. For example -- want a 3rd ?, go towards the nut from the 4th, etc.
For me, the glitch caused by having a 3rd instead of a 4th between G-string and the B-string makes things really goofy. So, I just think of the B-string as being on top of the E-string like I would on a 5-string bass.

current chord's scale or, when modulating to a different chord, the
shared notes and 'graceful slurs' [e.g. F -> G7 -> C....while in
F, noodle around the F scale, with emphasis on F, A, C, E flat....while
changing F -> G7, stick to G, A, C, D, E (shared notes) and think of
graceful slurs from B flat -> B or F -> F# {probably not, since
it's G7}....in G7, emphasize G, B, D, F....] -- and on the other hand,
I'm trying to capture in an instrument what I'd do if I was whistling
along with the tune.

If I were looking to describe what I'd be looking for in your shoes (and what I think you'd find helpful), I'd be talking about common cadences [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadence_%28music%29 ] and learning/practicing riffs that steer through them. As an example, on a keyboard you can go F-F-F-G7-C (hold) and it's a unit, found all over the place [them's chords -- for F, read "F, A, C"; for G7, read "F, G, B"; for C, read "E, G, C"]. You can transpose it up or down, but it's a satisfying cadence and often used.
Once you have a particular cadence [AKA "turnaround" in jazz], there are many common riffs that steer through it -- some more country, some more jazz, some more classical, some more avant-garde -- but they're all valid ways through the knot. If you learn a few, you could solo by doing some fancy arpeggio of the chord during repeated chord sections and doing cadence riffs during modulation.

I have no absolute sense of pitch -- so when something goes up a fifth and plays for a while and then down a fourth, I have no idea where that is from when I started. In a band situation, I'm the guy who's always going, "what key are we in?!?!??" And when I guess wrong, I can play half the song in the wrong key and not know why I'm getting the stink-eye.
I think I get that from my dad. He used to hum/mumble some things that we always took for random noise until my mom picked up a copy of Marty Robbins' "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" out of a remainder bin and we realized -- to our shock -- that 80% of his hum/mumble things were actually someone singing along to memories of the album with zero sense of pitch and uncertain knowledge of the lyrics.

I can relate to this. Don't have much of a natural ear. Learn't music by listening to the drums. Probably should have been a drummer. Got given a bass and told to become one because a band need one. The drum thing came in handy there. Turned to guitar and worked on rythm and slide/riffs etc. Worked reall hard at it. Mostly playing all day every day, etc. Only got a limited amount of by ear ability, but, with the work I managed to bring some pretty decent rythm work to a song, often better than the much more accomplished lead style players, who viewed rhythm as just "filler". So I'm told. They were probably just bullshitting me. Seriously, I suck. But I can sound pretty decent while sucking.

I thought that might be it. Suggestion --- an approach to cut the fretboard mapping problem down to much smaller chunks.
just ignore the treble B for a little while. You can map the entire neck in your head in short order on the top 4 (EADG). One reason it is easy is you only have to map 12 frets cuz they repeat.
Once you see the simplicity in that -- then consider that the treble E is just a copy of the bass E and you already know it cold. You will also know all the relationships between the B-E because they are the same as all the other relationships in the top 4 strings you already know.
Then the only thing left for you to map in your head will be the G-B glitch. (Which actually screws me up more when skipping strings from D-B, G-E, than from G-B cuz I get the whole major 3rd thing OK.)
BTW, the G-B glitch occurs because it takes 13 positions to have 12 spaces. Can't be helped. Same reason there are 5 black keys and 8 white keys.
Which reminds me of something else I blundered across -- all the pentatonic scales are just the black keys, and the only difference between the various pentatonic scales is which black key you start on. So, if you want to translate pentatonic scales onto your guitar, just play only sharps and flats until you learn the shape of that scale. Then you can translate that shape anywhere on the neck and play pentatonic scales in any key.

I quit playing the piano the first time I saw a video of Errol Garner. That was it. Finito. Ultimate mastery had been achieved, and everything subsequent to his career would be a pathetic pale imitation.
Same was true for guitar. Once you see Joseph Spence, Jimi Hendrix et alia play, there's no real point in continuing your studies. Unless you were a natural-born genius, you will always be an incompetent struggling buffoon by comparison. So I quit even pretending to play stringed instruments as well.

And waaay before that there was the lute, so the bass string locations and fingering was established at least as far back as the frigging dark ages. The lute came from the oud, and there is evidence of that existing on some 3000BC Mesopotamian cylinder seal, so you actually CAN say the pattern was indeed written in stone.
