Overnight Open Thread (11-14-2013) - The slackening continues
— Maetenloch

Hey I could get used to this new lifestyle. Sucks for the non-Platinum readers though.

Oh Noes: KRUGTRON, the Invincible Discovers Suburban Sprawl

Krugman comes close to suggesting that if suburban sprawl around Detroit had been prevented, Detroit would be fine today.  He deplores Atlanta, precisely because it has allowed suburban growth.  He endorses "smart growth" policies, "which try to promote compact centers with access to public transit."  In other words, Krugman joins other liberals in wanting to use the force of the law to compel people to live in modes contrary to their revealed preferences (as most other economists would say).  The irony is lost on Krugman that in order to promote social mobility, he wishes to use the power of government to prevent physical mobility-the right and ability of people to exit predatory, dysfunctional urban governments like Detroit.

It's a mystery to me why people like Krugman can still claim to be called "liberal."  There is nothing liberal at all about them.

Meanwhile Obama and HUD Have Vays of Making You Live Correctly

And getting you out of your reactionary suburbs.

The new HUD rule is really about changing the way Americans live. It is part of a broader suite of initiatives designed to block suburban development, press Americans into hyper-dense cities, and force us out of our cars. Government-mandated ethnic and racial diversification plays a role in this scheme, yet the broader goal is forced "economic integration." The ultimate vision is to make all neighborhoods more or less alike, turning traditional cities into ultra-dense Manhattans, while making suburbs look more like cities do now. In this centrally-planned utopia, steadily increasing numbers will live cheek-by-jowl in "stack and pack" high-rises close to public transportation, while automobiles fall into relative disuse.

...Recalcitrant suburbs can also be brought to heel by lawsuits claiming violations of federal fair housing law. California's SB375 facilitates such suits by placing the burden of proof on local jurisdictions accused of housing discrimination. Such legal claims are often brought by leftist community organizations of the type currently funded through the Obama administration's grant.

And Some More Classic KRUGTRON on ObamaCare

"The plan, this thing is going to work, it's going to be extremely popular, and it's going to wreak havoc with conservative ideology."

  -- Paul Krugman, July 2013

ObamaCare Schadenfreudlamadingdong

Look all the other cool kidz have already read Jonah's essay - what's wrong with you?

If you can't take some joy, some modicum of relief and mirth, in the unprecedentedly spectacular beclowning of the president, his administration, its enablers, and, to no small degree, liberalism itself, then you need to ask yourself why you're following politics in the first place. Because, frankly, this has been one of the most enjoyable political moments of my lifetime. I wake up in the morning and rush to find my just-delivered newspaper with a joyful expectation of worsening news so intense, I feel like Morgan Freeman should be narrating my trek to the front lawn. Indeed, not since Dan Rather handcuffed himself to a fraudulent typewriter, hurled it into the abyss, and saw his career plummet like Ted Kennedy was behind the wheel have I enjoyed a story more.

...But as a political and ideological matter, this is beyond fantastic. For years we've been told that Democrats were more "reality-based," that "facts have a liberal bias," in the words of Paul Krugman, and that if they could just have their way, they could fix all of our problems. No one represented this arrogant promise more than Barack Obama himself. But, with an irony so rich it would be made of Corinthian leather if it was a car seat, the only way he could get his signature legislation passed was to baldly and brazenly lie about it, over and over and over again. He created a rhetorical cloud castle where no one would lose his insurance, every family would save thousands of dollars, and millions of the uninsured would suddenly get coverage. Anyone who doubted this was called a fool or a liar, or even a racist. It was, in the parlance of liberalism, a "false choice" to assert that Obamacare couldn't be a floor wax and a dessert topping.

And all of this - every bit of it - is their own fault.

On the Liberal Pussification of the NFL

Sundays make me ashamed to be an American. What was once a day for worship, reading the Bible, and cataloging your neighbors' sins has been utterly eroded by the National Football League (NFL). Or as I like to call it: the New Front for Leftism.

...I'm not trying to do away with professional football. I have fond memories of teaching the game to Brigitta, an old flame from my salad days in West Germany. "This, America," I remember her saying one afternoon as she clutched the pigskin, her hair enticingly disheveled. She had been chasing me around the hop fields while carrying a plate of Kalbsleberwurst and Lachsschinken. I was still flush from the times I let her catch me. We ate Braunschweiger in the long grass. And I punted that ball clean across the Ardennes.

California To Require Porn Actors to Wear Safety Glasses?

Well I guess the goggle fetishists will be happy.

A Draft from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) may require porn actors to use condoms on shoots--not too surprising for an industry laden with STIs.

A bill called AB640, which requires condoms on porn shoots by law, is currently stalled in the Senate.

However, the new 21-page draft may also require actors to have sex during porn while wearing safety goggles.

The OSHA claims goggles will avoid semen from entering the eyes, a body part susceptible to diseases such as HIV and Chlamydia.

1 Guns and Racism A recent “research” article declared that “simply owning a firearm may also lead whites to develop more negative attitudes toward blacks.” According to this “scientific” research, people who support their 2nd Amendment liberties are RAAACIST! 73 Mr Wiggin Good morning, gentlemen. This is a twelwe-storey block combining classical neo-Georgian features with the efficiency of modern techniques. The tenants arrive in the entrance hall here, and are carried along the corridor on a conveyor belt in extreme comfort and past murals depicting Mediterranean scenes, towards the rotating knives. The last twenty feet of the corridor are heavily soundproofed. The blood pours down these chutes and the mangled flesh slurps into these... First City Gent Excuse me.... Mr Wiggin Hm? First City Gent Did you say knives? Mr Wiggin Rotating knives, yes. Second City Gent Are you proposing to slaughter our tenants? Mr Wiggin Does that not fit in with your plans? First City Gent No, it does not. We asked for a simple block of flats. Mr Wiggin Oh, I see. I hadn't correctly divined your attitude towards your tenants. You see I mainly design slaughter houses. Yes, pity. Mind you, this is a real beaut. I mean, none of your blood caked on the walls and flesh flying out of the windows, inconveniencing the passers-by with this one. I mean, my life has been building up to this. Second City Gent Yes, and well done, but we want a block of flats. Mr Wiggin May I ask you to reconsider. I mean, you wouldn't regret it. Think of the tourist trade. First City Gent No, no, it's just that we wanted a block of flats, not an abattoir. Mr Wiggin Yes, well, of course, this is just the sort blinkered philistine pig ignorance I've come to expect from you non-creative garbage. You sit there on your loathsome, spotty behinds squeezing blackheads, not caring a tinker's cuss about the struggling artist. (shouting) You excrement! 116 It is vital that we move as quickly as possible to bring the bourgeoisie to heel. The sooner that we have reduced their standard of living, the better. If a comfortable middle class is allowed to exist, they will resist our efforts to organize the collective. They will come to believe that they can function and prosper independently of the state. We must bring to bear every tool at our disposal, even if it entails the risk of rousing their ire for having encroached on their precious 'Constitution'. Move quickly and ruthlessly. At every opportunity make use of local useful idiots, provide funding if necessary. We are close to the tipping point comrades. Continue the march!

In the suburb I live in (Redmond) they are really cranking up the development of large soviet style blocks of apartment complexes. Oh, they paint them quasi bright colors, but that doesn't hide the blight. And in one case they didn't even bother to paint the apartment building, it is industrial grey concrete.

they want a "walkable urban city center" but the trouble is that there are still a ton of cars driving through their vision of European utopia and what is happening is that the place is becoming even less safe for walking.

Redmond is also the city that recently embraced the homeless camping in front of the library with a glowing article in the local paper, the library employees claimed to see no problem with it, the police said they didn't have a problem with it. Even the people who were waiting at the bus stop gushed about how great it was that the homeless had a place to camp under the shelter of the library overhang.

Surprising no one with a functioning brain, in the few weeks since the article appeared the number of homeless in the area has at least tripled. They are now camped out all over the place.

181 After the president announced the proposed changes, insurance regulators participated in a heated conference call, according to one regulator, where many expressed deep unhappiness about the proposal. Some on the call felt “the president kind of threw us under the bus today,” the regulator said on the condition of anonymity because the discussion was supposed to be private. What emerged from the call was a strongly worded statement warning of the possible effects of the president’s proposal. “This decision continues different rules for different policies and threatens to undermine the new market, and may lead to higher premiums and market disruptions in 2014 and beyond,” said Jim Donelon, Louisiana’s insurance regulator and the president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

250 In the message, which was sent on Friday morning to Simon & Schuster vice president Jennifer Robinson, Davies said someone had threatened to harm his family if he continued to defend his account of events in Benghazi to the media. The email was obtained by The Daily Beast. Davies wrote that on Sunday November 3 at 4:00 a.m., he was hand-delivered a note to his home address in Wales that said, “Stop talking now or your wife and son will disappear.” In the email to Robinson, he went onto say, “Due to this threat I will not discuss the book with anyone under any circumstances for the foreseeable future, I am not prepared to put my family in danger. I stand by my story however I understand that it continues to be rubbished, which I expected.” Davies wrote that the police took the threat to his family “very seriously” and that he had been advised to leave his home in south Wales and he did not know when he would return.

First time I was grateful for a long line, because he told me about being a messenger in the sewers, taking info about the Nazis around the city. 260 Cities and density aren't inherently bad ideas when based on infrastructure, commerce, culture, and economic efficiency. Of course the modern liberal has turned them political, social engineering and wealth transfer engines, so they've been ruined. Spontaneous, market driven, and voluntary urbanization = good, historic and natural order of humanity. Forced politically planned urbanization = the city winds up a burned out crime ridden authoritarian hellhole akin to a giant housing project. Most of the US's great cities weren't destroyed by sprawl, but by social engineering projects/urban renewal, housing projects, politically motivated big government infrastructure projects like highways, corruption, and general assholery. People voted with their feet. Many idiotic urban planners then decided to save cities they must be suburbanized, which only wrecked the cities further. Some people like cities, some people like suburbs, trying to make or the other more like their opposite pleases no one and RUINS BOTH. Trying to force of engineer behavior almost always produces the opposite result. Oh, and turning a blind eye to the route causes of urban crime and dumping every welfare/criminal rent seeker in urban cores thanks to state and federal policy hasn't helped either. Trying to reverse that trend by dumping those people in the suburbs will shift the problem, not fix it.

Posted by: BlueFalcon in Boston at November 14, 2013 07:02 PM (KCvsd)

261 A word about suburban sprawl: If you're going to decry it - as many on the left do - you can't point to the Interstate Highway System as an example of the federal government doing something right. Without the Interstates, suburbia as we know it wouldn't be possible.

Most Americans choose to live in suburbia. There's this crazy idea of leaving people alone to live however the hell they want. They want to be in the country? good for them. They want to be in the heart of the big city? good for them. Small town, big city, suburbia, exurbia, inner burbs, countryside. Each to his own. Just leave people alone. Why does the Left get so upset about where some stranger chooses to live? I don't care how they live.

332 287 Because the projects have worked so well for black families Krugman wants white families to enjoy the perks. In short, yes. It's 'fair,' you see, to force white people down specifically. Take away that 'White Privilege' and institute controlled 'equality.' And, once whitey is on the dole and herded into the Urban Environment, they'll become good Democrat statists waiting for their public assistance money. Perpetual Democrat majority. Posted by: --- at November 14, 2013 11:09 PM (MMC8r) Yep. See the "chavs" of England. A white underclass that displays each and every pathology of the black underclass in America. 398 Barky’s ideas of warehousing people in high density projects like Pruitt–Igoe project in Missouri has it merits. Say Axlerod, Krudman and Chrissy Methuse lived next door to me. I could conveniently walk over and deliver Axelrod’s 0bamaCare talking points to both of them… and a quick wedgie. If some the 0bamaCare talking points did not pan-out we could just dump them down the garbage shoots where they would rot with the melon rinds, used condoms, scammed debit cards and dirty baby diapers. Nobody would want to dive into smelly garbage heap to retrieve them and use them against us. After Barky milked the slum project dry of millions of dollars it could then be demolished. It’s that simple. [Wikipedia] “Pruitt–Igoe consisted of 33 11-story apartment buildings on a 57-acre site, on St. Louis's lower north side. The complex totaled 2,870 apartments, one of the largest in the country. The apartments were deliberately small, with undersized kitchen appliances. "Skip-stop" elevators stopped only at the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth floors, forcing residents to use stairs in an attempt to lessen congestion. The same "anchor floors" were equipped with large communal corridors, laundry rooms, communal rooms and garbage chutes. The stairwells and corridors attracted muggers. Ventilation was poor, centralized air conditioning nonexistent.” “Despite federal cost-cutting regulations, Pruitt–Igoe initially cost $36 million, 60% above national average for public housing. Conservatives attributed cost overruns to inflated unionized labor wages and the steamfitters union influence that led to installation of an expensive heating system; overruns on the heating system caused a chain of arbitrary cost cuts in other vital parts of the building… Its 33 buildings were demolished with explosives in the mid-1970s, and the project has become an icon of urban renewal and public-policy planning failure.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruitt-Igoe

424 By comparison, Bridgeport's "Kingpin" -- a double red ale -- is quite nice. Not as seriously delicious as Ninkasi's "Believer", but very tasty.

BTW -- went to Stone Brewing's Liberty Station establishment in San Diego for dinner last week in our SoCal trip, and it was so good that the BH elected to go back the next night as well (and she's not a beer drinker). On the second night, the only thing I repeated was the soup -- different appetizers, entrees, and beers. All of it was damned good (first night's chicken schnitzel was Teh Delish). And, to top it off, they're now pouring "Stone Witty Moron" -- a black witbier.

Just a short note to let you know I'm doing well in Tokyo, and plan on making a lot of new friends.  Last night I was out playing pachinko machines and eating sushi while drinking sake.

I went home a little buzzed, well a lot buzzed, and what is  completely out of character for me, I blew Tonki the houseboy.  It was unexpected, but secretly I enjoyed it even after he promised to not do it.  I was completely surprised when he failed in his promise, and unloaded like a sperm whale coming up for air.

We'll talk soon, and I will explain more of my exploits in Japan.

Best Wishes,

Don't ever think you should "get over it" -- seek, rather, to be at peace with it. It will always be there, and it will always be coupled with the shock and dismay you felt at the time.....but you should be sustained and comforted by your relationships today.

505 Palos Verdes is pretty conservative. A small peninsula of sanity in crazy liberal LA county. Posted by: LASue at November 15, 2013 01:59 AM (gjIQF) There was a time when much of L.A. County was conservative. West L.A. used to elect Bob Dornan to Congress. The Valley was hardcore conservative, as was Long Beach. The last GOPer to take the county, IIRC, was Pete Wilson in '94. There was even a time when L.A. was the only major city that wasn't "closed shop." Sadly, L.A. County was taken over by the Left. It has since spread throughout SoCal. The S.F. insanity similarly took over the North, and holds overlordship over California. California is now the Fools' Golden State. R.I.P.

UWP, the metering lights at (some) freeway on-ramps are still there.  But San Diego traffic is still (usually) fairly mild by Top 10 city standards (say, 1/10,000th what the DC area has become).  But there's not much urban core here - though downtown has been repopulated since the early 90s.  Fairly small, though, and it was "rescued" not from east coast/Midwest style urban blight but mostly from declining or abandoned small commercial and industrial areas.

ctulhu, to my continuing amazement, San Diego is one of the top craft beer areas in the nation - some say it is actually THE top area.  We don't even have water here!  Since I've come back I haven't really done much beer research - more of a wine guy so lots of time in the central coast and some in Sonoma.  Need to remedy that.  And I recall driving by that Stone place at NTC (the old base name that older locals use for Liberty Station - which is a spectacular conversion and I believe the best one since the BRAC program started in the 80s).

I like the Ballast Point name since it refers to a spot near the mouth of the harbor that is divided between a Coast Guard station and the nuclear sub base, and just below the nuke ordnance storage caverns on Pt. Loma.  A beer named for a closed, highly secure military reservation ....

Well Political Hat has already withdrawn into his underground Nevada lair, but he mentioned the political degradation of SoCal.  Grew up there as it was happening, and now that he mentions it, it's a pretty good microcosm of the bewildering and devastating, light-speed decline of the country and civic culture.  CA is now a group of unions with a government, which also has a state that goes with it somewhere.

Some might say San Diego is still not beyond hope, and a pitched battle.  Dunno.  I do know that my disgust with the people living here (I won't call them citizens - incl. my siblings and their families - because they really aren't, in effect) has me thinking I won't even bother to vote in the special coming up to replace Filthy Filner.

In a way, the stark difference between (most) Dem vs. GOP voters here is illuminating.  Dem side is pretty much identity politics and voting yourself other people's money (public unions and social program "beneficiaries"); by contrast GOP voters in the primary last time spurned the Marine vet slickster for the gay council member who'd actually done something in city government.  In that primary the other GOP hopeful who was widely respected was the lesbian city prosecutor.  And today, the acting mayor (who refused to run for the job in the special) is a gay Hispanic, and HE gets very high marks from lots of GOP voters (duh - because of the way he does his job, nobody gives a f**k about his last name or lifestyle).  No exaggeration to say that at least here the Dems have become what they pretend to fear and decry in their opposition, while their opposition is pretty much open-minded and practical.

So the Dems will probably retain the mayor's seat because of tribalism and corruption (really there's no other word for what's become of public employees and their unions' role in politics) and racism and of course the substantial Coastal Clueless Effect (Dems are cool, Repubs are some kind of Nazis or something, and hey I love your Coexist sticker on your Prius, check out my Surfrider Foundation decal in the back window dude!).

Ya know I have no glass on any of my rifles.  Don't hunt.  Wondering if I'll ever get some glass, or just stick with iron sights forever.  Vision is pretty good, but don't know how that might change in a way that matters for sights.

Had a funny/frustrating reloading thing tonight.  I've been having this mysterious problem where my powder die was over-flaring the .357 brass - sometimes - and I couldn't find the cause.  Seems that the pulled FMJ bullets I'm using have a few under-sized.  Duh!!  Wasn't the press or die at all.

Well, time hit the sack.  Fun day planned for Saturday, taking two friends and a French girl staying with them to the range.  Will take a bunch of handguns and rifles and let them turn money into noise.  Foreign students make up a constant and significant portion of the customers at the indoor range where I belong.  Those evil weird Americans and their guns ..... turn out to be an irresistibly fascinating aspect of the country once these furriners actually get here and have the freedom to give it a try.

Old cities with their cramped, dark breezeways and walkups felt like a prison from a past century. Then, somehow, I spent fourteen years managing and living in those crowded walkups, and raising our children - initially - among them. I could never go back. But there was one thing, in the early days, that made Big City apartment life livable. Diaper service.

That goes double for your kids.  It seems to me that anybody who chooses to live in a city and send their kids to public school when they could afford to live elsewhere does not like their kids all that much and it would not really be all that outrageous for them to receive a visit from Child Protective Services.

572 I have a rule about talking politics with friends, but I'd love to hear what my Obama-loving LIV's friends still living in CA are thinking right now.
Feeling sorta Nelson Muntz-ish "Ha-ha"
