The Last of the Doolittle Raiders
Militarily the 1942 raid was almost negligible but psychologically it was a huge blow to the Japanese sense of invulnerability as well as a giant boost to American morale.
Coming just a few months after Pearl harbor the raid showed that the US could still touch even the most cherished and protected areas of Japan. Of course the raid itself was high risk, primarily based on surprise and was a one-way trip for the crews who couldn't return to the carriers once they took off. Most flew another 8 hours after their bomb run and ended up crash landing or bailing out over China during the night. It's estimated that the Japanese killed 250,000 Chinese civilians during their attempt to find all the downed US airmen.
Doolittle and his crew, after parachuting into China, received assistance from Chinese soldiers and civilians as well as John Birch, an American missionary in China. As did the others who participated in the mission, Doolittle had to bail out but fortunately landed in a heap of dung (saving a previously injured ankle from breaking) in a paddy in China near Quzhou. Doolittle felt the raid had been a terrible failure because all the aircraft were lost, and he expected to be court-martialed on his return. He subsequently recommended Birch for intelligence work with Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers.
One crewman, Corporal Leland D. Faktor, flight engineer/gunner with Gray, was killed during his bailout attempt over China, the only man in that crew to be lost. Two crews (10 men) were missing.
Eventually all of the crewmen were accounted for including 3 who were captured and executed by the Japanese.
Today there are only four left and they were honored last week at the National Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, Ohio.
Last week, the few survivors still able - Doolittle's Crew #1 copilot, then-lieutenant Richard Cole; Crew 15 flight engineer, then-sergeant Ed Saylor who would retire as a Lt. Colonel, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo author Ted Lawson's Crew 7 "The Ruptured Duck" engineer/gunner then-sergeant David Thatcher, sipped brandy from a ceremonial bottle [of Hennessy cognac from 1896, the year of his birth] that Doolittle had sourced some sixty years ago. The tradition was that the last man standing would drink the bottle; in the 1940s no one expected four of the raid survivors to survive into their 90s. (The fourth, Crew 16 "Bat out of Hell" co-pilot then-2nd-Lt. Robert Hite, who was captured by the Japanese after the raid, was too unwell to attend; he participated from home).
Here is a photo of Richard Cole (front right) posing with Doolittle and his crew before the mission and one of Robert Hite after his capture by the Japanese. He toasted his comrades remotely during the ceremony.

Your Bodyclock and Pre-Stressing
There's evidence you can will yourself to wake on time, too. Sleep scientists at Germany's University of Lubeck asked 15 volunteers to sleep in their lab for three nights. One night, the group was told they'd be woken at 6 a.m., while on other nights the group was told they'd be woken at 9 a.m.
But the researchers lied-they woke the volunteers at 6 a.m anyway. And the results were startling. The days when sleepers were told they'd wake up early, their stress hormones increased at 4:30 a.m., as if they were anticipating an early morning. When the sleepers were told they'd wake up at 9 a.m., their stress hormones didn't increase -- and they woke up groggier. "Our bodies, in other words, note the time we hope to begin our day and gradually prepare us for consciousness," writes Jeff Howe at Psychology Today.

Way I understand it, the planes planned to land at specified airfields in China, but a Jap patrol boat discovered the carrier group before it arrived at the planned launch position. Doolittle elected to take off immediately in order to prevent defensive preparation after the Mainland received the patrol boat's warning.
The early launch is what caused the inability to reach the Chinese airfields as planned - and Doolittle's sense of failure when all the planes were lost.

The third of the Yorktown class, and only constructed because the Treaty limitations for warship class tonnages had expired and the plans for the Essex class were not ready, so the USN ordered a repeat Yorktown to get another carrier.*
*The remains of the Treaty carrier tonnage were expended with the USS WASP, a small ship and the limitations of her were too obvious when she was torpedoed. Only USS Enterprise of that class survived the war (and was the essential carrier - and only carrier - in the Pacific. Fun Fact: Enterprise came out with a lot of engine defects and some cost overruns to get them to work right. But her history...)

USS Hornet ( CV-8 ) was not a true Yorktown class carrier. She was slightly bigger with greater tonnage. Most noticeable change was in her island which differed from that of Yorktown and Enterprise. But she was run off as a gap-filler as you said because the Essex ( CV-9 ) was not ready yet - she would not make it to the Pacific until early 1943.
After loss of USS Wasp ( CV-7 ) to I-boat launched Long Lance torpedoes while refueling planes, Ranger ( CV-4), being the other baby carrier, was kept in the Atlantic.

Some funny Halsey-Doolittle Raid trivia.
1. A lookout on one of the Japanese picket boats spotted the two U.S. carriers but thought they were Japanese. He told his skipper to look at "two of our beautiful carriers." The skipper did and said; "They're beautiful all right, but they're not ours." The skipper went below and killed himself.
2. After several days of walking in China, Doolittle was exhausted and asked his Chinese guide to get him something to ride. The guide provided a donkey that kicked Doolittle in the chest and knocked him to the ground. The guide then said; "He bites too!"

I ended up writing a letter to General Doolittle after the presentation, and dad got it to him through the military grapevine somehow. Got a letter from him, with a translation from his daughter since he was old and shaky. Said he thought the situation was kinda funny, and that he was amazed and honored that someone my age knew who he was, and for stuff other than just his raid (I'd asked about his days racing planes, particularly about the GeeBee Model R-1).
Dunno what happened to those letters. One of the things I most wish I could find in our pile of stuff.

Labeling a fetus as a human being is pretty stupid in and of itself. Sorry. But a glob of tissue does not a human being make.
And it's irrelevant because you know very well that a Republican is going to be hammered for saying something idiotic about rape and abortion while nobody will give a fuck what Amanda Marcotte says.
Why can't you people ever learn this simple fact?

I'm going to put up my usual blurb about AoS banninations --
AoS is superior to other websites with banhammers in that you can usually: (1) wait for the specific issue to blow over and feathers to unruffle; (2) send an Email of Contrition to Ace -- which works better if you (a) don't re-argue the issue, (b) don't re-argue the banning, (c) acknowledge Ace's proprietary rights to his website, (d) communicate understanding of what precisely you screwed up, (e) express remorse, and (f) have a reasonably plausible plan for it not to happen again; and (3) keep reminding Ace and/or his cob-loggers of your desire to rejoin the Horde (as actual nuts-and-bolts blog business is usually right around priority #38 to TPTB).
Seen it work dozens of times, some really great people have been banned and have successfully returned.

Ships are not exact carbon copies of each other (as you well know! I am not lecturing or condescending; I merely wish to expand on my comment from the foothold your comment has given me.) Ships are constructed, and when a lead ship is run the problems discovered on the shakedown and initial operations are adjusted in subsequent members of the class. The USN Brooklyn class light cruisers had two near sisters - St. Louis and Helena. The major difference is that the Brooklyn's had 5" guns in four open single mounts along the sides; whereas the St. Louis class had the 5" mounts in twin gunhouses, two to a side. Mechanically and in every other important specification they were the same ships, but that difference in how the secondary armament was arranged split them into two classes.*
*IIRC the Brooklyn's had 5"/47 caliber guns where the St. Louis' had 5"38 caliber guns. It is late and I am a few beers to the good and I do not want to dig out that book on US Cruisers.

Wasn't great but I watched it all the way through.
That's hilarious you should mention that. A young German woman was working as a waitress at a bar/restaurant that I like and she asked what those little animals with the big cheeks and who hold their arms like this (putting her hands/arms into a squirrel pose) are called? I think she might have said 'brown' too as I told her the brown ones with stripes are called 'chipmunks' but the grey and black ones are called 'squirrels'. And she repeated the word several times in a very cute way. Before she returned to Germany (her dad faked being ill to get her to return!) with her spouse (who was a good guy and worked for Mercedes-Benz's Canadian branch) by chance I got some photos of squirrels in our front yard including one where completely by chance I caught it in mid-air while it was running across the road.

You're serious? You think society is better off with a single mother on welfare whose kid is almost guaranteed to be on welfare and/or in jail.
This is better than the 16 year old having an abortion?
Are you fucking insane?
16 year olds have been getting married and having kids for millennia, and societies - including the early United States - have got along just fine. The problem is not teen mothers, the problem is unwed mothers, and that problem is directly attributable to the same sexual libertinism that abortion is part of and that you are defending.
Frankly, I imagine that even unwed mothers on welfare are less socially destructive that teen-agers who are fine with designating their children "nonhuman" and killing them. It is more difficult to measure that kind of destruction, though.
Posted by: Grey Fox at November 20, 2013 06:57 PM (XtD9y)
That's fine, but the electorate is largely ignorant of science, ethical concerns are of little consequence for them, and most couldn't identify key passages of the constitution if you put a gun to their heads.
Reason doesn't win elections. Bullshit and lies, and (very) occasionally reflexive reactions to hard personally experienced pain wins elections.

The military is also interested in them as a means to quickly and cheaply deploy satellites for specific missions on short notice.
I worked on Clementine, back in 90s. It was similar in concept. The short notice, short duration satellite was a political weapon. As in: "We just popped a 120day satellite up to improve coverage of your miserable little shithole country; so one, we are serious about kicking your ass and two, the clock is ticking - your not worth burning another candle."

You admit it is a nonsensical analogy but you use it anyway. Believing Elvis is alive is not a moral issue. It is absurd to invoke and only serves to show why you should not be taken seriously.
I'm not even strongly anti-abortion. I can accept the termination of a severely defective fetus, especially if detected in the first trimester. But I also accept that abortion as casual birth control by adults, by far the most common application, is not the mark of a healthy culture.
I'm reminded of the article that made the rounds a few years ago, written by a woman who was shocked to find that she was not only pregnant but pregnant with triplets. This was unacceptable to her, not because of any issue of health or financial means but because it would have far too much impact on her lifestyle. She wrote of being forced to move out of the big city to the suburbs and <horrors> shop at Costco. So she had two of the fetuses terminated. They were just incompatible with her urban hipster life.

Standing by to be edumucated by Anna, MTW, Mike H., or other WWII geeks - but I believe that the Doolittle Raid actually had an effect on the fateful Midway decision by the Japanese. Whether it was material to the actual course of events, or just added some weight to one side in the debate, I don't know (my fault for not taking the time to look into it more).
But basically: the Army was very un-keen on Yamamoto's idea of provoking the US carrier forces into action, so as to finally sink them, by occupying Midway. My incomplete understanding is that the events of April 16 at the least added to Yamamoto's argument - the humiliating attack, the threat to the Imperial Presence it represented - these could not be permitted to occur again. The US carriers must be sunk, at last, and Yamamoto's huge and bold operation would probably achieve that objective.
Oh - and sorry I came late (typically) to the ONT discussion of the Graf Spee the other night. My own related anecdote: in 1985 I was in Buenos Aires, and some local contacts took me to a German restaurant on Calle Lavalle (one of the pedestrian avenues back then, along with Calle Florida, I think?). Name of the place was ABC. Waiters were notably old, and had heavy accents in Spanish. My contacts told me some of the waiters were crewmen from the Graf Spee. Interned by Geneva rules in Montevideo, but of course slipped over to B.A. easily. Don't know if it was true, but have always kicked myself for not going back to try and do an article on the story in the next few months.

I'd also add that they're reflexively against any sort of against any sort of audit or accountability or basic sanitary standards for the clinics. You know, where they're sticking rotors up women's yoohoo's and grinding up body parts and sucking them out with a hose.
So, meeting basic health standards would close most of the abortion clinics? Tough; they should either have to adjust and improve or go out of business...like everyone else. I'd be more pissed that they weren't already doing it on their own, personally, but I'm an EEEEEEEEEEEVIL RETHRUGLIKKKAN KKKONSERVATIVE MALE.
I'd also add that they're encroaching even beyond Europe on the maximum term for abortions; with some groups even advocating for post-birth "abortions", since anyone under 2-3 can't contribute to their own upkeep in any meaningful way, so ergo can't be considered people yet (via Journal of Medical Ethics from about 1/2 a year ago).

The right to keep and bear arms is pre-existant. God given, if you wish.
Each citizen has that right. It cannot be abridged.
Each citizen ALSO has the PRIVILEGE NOT to exercise that right.
But the privilege to not exercise said right can't trump the original.

Actually, something as simple as enforcing the electric code for "patient treatment areas" would be enough to shut a lot of them down. Anything where a patient is undergoing procedures, anesthesia, etc has a much stricter wiring standard that ordinary commercial space where many have set up shop.

80% of the public rejects the absolute ban on abortion. This has been consistent in just about any poll for the past decade.
If you think an 80-20 split against you is a winning position, there's really no reasoned debate possible.
Unless the GOP shuts the fuck up about abortion, it will lose election after election.
Ball is in your court...
Posted by: Mr. Moo Moo at November 20, 2013 11:15 PM (dfLY4)
The problem is that -- like any human action -- there are a variety of factors to consider with abortion. There's an old example where you're driving a schoolbus full of kids on a mountain road with a cliff alongside, and a little girl runs out into the road.....yes, it's regrettable, but your best choice is to run her down in cold blood. Doesn't mean that running down little girls with a bus is a great idea or laudable.
So a rejection of an absolute ban on abortion means little -- it's like an absolute ban on running over kids with a bus. There are circumstances -- classic ones involve cases of rape or horrendous defects -- where abortion is a rational choice. And there are extremists who -- despite the majorities who are queasy about the life-and-death choice at the core of the discussion -- feel that abortion must be celebrated as being an outright good in all cases.
Unfortunately, with the progressive left in office and their enablers in the media, the righteous argument against those extremists is painted as extremism, and the actual extremists' arguments are painted as Truth -- and even in blogs like this one, some folks can't help but mindlessly repeat slogans.

The Japanese Army and Navy loathed each other. Any cooperation seems to have been by accident. The Navy wanted some breathing room after the early conquests, they had been running all over everywhere in the pacific and Indian Oceans and removing the USN as a viable rival in the Pacific was always part of their plans. The Army also wanted time to digest the conquests, but they were more focused on Asia and moving onward to the west.
However, as you noted, the insult to Japan by the bombing raid needed avenging, and if the Midway operation could destroy the effective offensive strength of the USN for a year, then Japan would have time to take a few global Tums and get the new areas set into the Empire such that digging them out would take far longer than the USA would want to take.
That their intentions did not work out (Hi Barack! This is Hidecki, I'll save you a seat!) is just what happens when intentions start rolling the dice against reality.

Yep. But the limiting factor is how much tissue they can take off of the roof of your mouth. Since they've already hit the left and right sides, I have to wait three months for it to fully recover before they can do the final graft.
The procedure itself is nearly painless. But as the grafted tissue heals you get maximum swelling right as the nerves reattach which equals uncomfortable pain for a few days to a weel. I could have gotten by with just one graft but since I have dual dental coverage this year and the deductible is met, I figured why not head off future problems so I don't have to go through this again.

So rare that people are frequently adopting from foreign nations. Nor is it a matter of shopping for an ethnic match, considering how many families I see where the child is obviously not the genetic product of the parents.

I feel like I was visiting your home and you opened a window onto a scene of massive desolation. It's not my home, my life -- I cannot really, truly, share the experience....but I can glimpse it. Close the window, now, have a hug, and let's go play charades in the living room. Please. It's best for both of us.

Well there is a lot of tugging, banging, and stretching during the procedure plus swelling afterwards. The morning after the first graft I looked like Rocky circa the fourth round. This time there was very little swelling or pain the day after.

I'm hoping to trade up a little after I get some strings and a setup done on it (unless, of course, I fall in love with it -- though, it's not really my style of guitar these days). What do you suppose would be something within swapping range in a more traditional Les Paul, Strat or Tele style in a private-party swap, as opposed to a guitar shop?

Plus an amp, for $200? You're laughing. Yeah, it's flashy enough to get your $$$ back, even if it's a disastercaster. Might go alright after a set up. I'm a little iffy on the Squier strats, generally. They don't come as close to an old Strat as their Tele's do to old Tele's. Not saying they suck, they just don't seem to translate as well as an econ version... in my limited experience with Squier Strats. Still good value for an econ Strat, though... just the Squier Tele comes closer, for the $$$. If you can swap the Dean for an S-Strat, however, or offset the cost, it's a win, for sure. Keep your eye out for Epiphone Les Pauls, as well.

I've been doing a lot of reading on the S-Strats lately, and your take on them seems to comport with the impression I've gotten. Apparently, they've been farmed out all over the East, and whether or not you get a good one is a complete crap-shoot. There's even a lot of disagreement over where the better ones were made, and which serial numbers are the good ones.

I plucked at it a little bit. The action could be a bit lower, and the strings were atrocious -- bought for a kid a few years ago who didn't want to go to the trouble of learning how to play it. I got it and a Guitar Research practice amp for $200. The guitar seems pretty nice, and will probably play pretty well after a setup. I'm hoping to trade-up with a kid who has a nicer guitar, but doesn't like it because it doesn't look cool enough. The "Dimebag" name might carry a little extra weight with a younger player who wants to shred but has a decent Squier Strat or Tele he isn't crazy about.

I'd also recommend that you keep a look out for a 1970's Ibanez Les Paul, or, Ibanez studio. They made pretty serious Gibson copies back then and won't set you back too much, in the rough range of Squier Telecaster from the same period.

Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at November 21, 2013 01:09 AM
Good to hear your new found love for Telecasters. I am suspicious of people that don't love them. I think they may be communists... and gay. So that's the reason for the hit and miss S-Strat factor? It makes sense. I always thought it must be because the strat is a more complicated design. You might get a good one, but you might not. The S-Tele's have a much higher hit rate.

Romney would lead Obama, 49% to 45%, among registered voters in an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Tuesday. The findings are within the poll's margin of error, but pollster Gary Langer notes that Obama's support among registered voters now is actually 6 points lower than his showing in the 2012 election.

As a Libertarian, my viewpoint on abortion becomes secondary to mt fiscal policy. In a Presidential race, it simply isn't an issue.
...States' Rights trump anything I may believe. Constitutionally.
Unless there are those who would expect me to act like regulatory nightmares that came before them, I'd simply mention that my stance on regulatory offices, (like HHS), is to eliminate them.
I'd be the only nominee in favor of diminishing my own power.
This becomes more of an issue when running for a State position, therefore acknowledging my anti-abortion stance. "A clump of cells", in my opinion, does not become a giraffe. It also doesn't become a cloud, idea, or hammer. ...Pregnancy Leads to Humans.
While running for office in a State Legislature or for Governor, this has more impact than it does at the National Level. The dichotomy becomes irrelevant at the National Level, lest the Supreme Court nominations.
...aaahhhh. That's what it is all about, isn't it? The "Progressive" mindset? "He'll Go All-Jesus and Shit!!!111".
Conveniently Forgetting Checks and Balances is what the "Progressive" movement is all about. They'll leave that out of every news story, press release and campaign slogan.

Yeah, the Ibanez studio is a kickass guitar. Ibanez made really good Gibson copies back then. They really are impressive for the $$$. Like Squier they suffered from being "poor man's Gibsons" back then and weren't all that cheap, really, when you could get the real thing. But, with the skyrocketing price of real ones these days, the Ibanez is a bloody steal and kind of classic in it's own right. Mind you, people are catching on and it won't be too long before Ibanez and Squier guitars get crazy in price, I suspect. You can't really go wrong with a 70's Ibanez Gibson copy. If that Facebook Ibanez is really an ST, I'd look at it, if i was you. Find out what it is exactly and how much they want for it. Guitar shops should have examples also. But, they probably are hip to it all. Private purchase would be a better buy.

I haven't really had all that much contact with folks who have Down's syndrome -- being, frankly, kind of a hermit.....and, then, associating with accounting-types who tend more toward OCD and various flavors of autism -- but those that I have met have struck me as genuinely lovely people.
And those are three very special words. They are genuine. They are lovely. And they are people. They don't spend all their time trying to scheme, pander, misdirect, and portray [although they do!] -- they mostly just are; while I concede there may be sour and spiteful people with Down's syndrome, the ones that I have met have been cheerful, hopeful, friendly, and social [more social than I am]; and -- perhaps most important -- they're people and not exotic zoo animals. If you sit down and chat, you'll find that there is the same process there is with everyone -- you'll discuss college anthropology courses and she'll try not to yawn, she'll discuss football rankings and you'll try to nod appropriately, and then you'll hit on the relative merits of crossbows v. longbows and you'll both be passionately arguing until they turn the lights out.

Hmmmm... yeah. It's not an ST, I don't think. It looks like one of their regular lines. Can't tell you exactly what it is, offhand. It looks well used and if it's 70's very early 80's it might go alright. No info is sometimes a good sign, in that the owner doesn't know what he's got. You could get one like this for a couple of $100 in those cases. But if there's no price... dunno. A bit iffy, yes. Sounds like he might want an offer. But hey, you could could always say "I'll give you $100. It's in poor shape and not a top line model."

First, throw away your old meat thermometer cuz it is too damn small to read. Pay for a new larger one that seems pretty good. Buy the most expensive one in a Fred Meyer -- don't go to a store where an actual chef would go cuz that's too much trouble.
Second, wait several months. Then happen across a NY Roast in the 'getting pretty old' section at the meat department of a Fred Meyer. Buy it cuz the price looks too good to pass up.
Third, when you get home, follow the directions on the package, except the friggin' thermometer indicates that the roast is cooking way too fast. Remember that you just cooked a turkey about a week ago and it was done about an hour early.
Cut the roast open near the end and find out that the middle is still pretty damn raw. Say shitty things about the thermometer and put the roast back in the oven. Reset the timer to some wild friggin' guess cuz you screwed up any chance to stay on the recipe.
Realize that you are running late for a gig, so check the roast. Cut off the end that you looked at before and eat the part that is actually cooked. Note that the damn thermometer says that the roast is actually done. Look at the newly exposed part and decide to throw the thermometer away later.
Set the oven timer for 15 minutes and leave for the gig. Plan on phoning home to get someone to take the damn roast out of the oven before it turns into shoe leather.
Get to the gig and get distracted and forget to phone home.
Come home 3.5 hours later and take the roast out of the oven. Slice and eat a piece. Damn good roast.
So, there you have it. Easy to follow recipe and gets good results.

Well, I noticed that one is a bolt on neck. There ARE set neck models with bound necks that are $6-700 new. I can only assume the bolt on neck version is cheaper still. Its hard to say because the world is just flooded with cheaper guitars, and in this market the resale can be low.
Ironically, I JUST brought a Dean home last night, its a Dean Inferno flying V. It was at the store I hang out in, and it came in on a trade, so being a diehard V dude I had to have it. Using THAT dean as an example, it was $325 used, Korean made, set neck, elaborate flame inlays on a bound fingerboard, hardshell case, and mahogany neck and body. I have no clue how much cheaper it would be if it was a bolt on neck. Maybe $200? I don't know. Where it was made would have a lot to do with it. A lot of times I see bolt on neck versions of a set neck guitar being made in a different country. It wouldn't surprise me to see a set neck made in korea, and a bolt on version being made in china, or indonesia. There IS a guitar like yours on Ebay right now thats $125, no bids, and 2 days left, so you probably paid right in the ball park.

I saw that on Drudge. Maybe I'm just old but that just strikes me as utter crap. It isn't good enough to be offensive, for all of the cliche obnoxious language, it is just boring. A far worse sin in something that purports to be entertainment.

And, if nothing else, I can hot rod the thing with new pickups, maybe a tremolo system and use it to entice someone into making me a really good trade offer on it.

He got the guitar and an amp for $200? There is one like his on ebay that the neck just has to be put back on and its $59, so yeah, could be a tad high. I have to agree about the Ibanez/squire thing. Squires are garbage, there I said it. I have a few 70's Ibanez guitars and they are miles ahead of a squire. Having said that, there is an era of squires that aren't "that" bad. You have to watch though, some have thinner bodies, some have plywood bodies, and some have full thickness solid wood bodies. I don't know exactly when the better era was, I can only assume they would be older ones.
As far as recent Ibanez guitars go, there are some really nice ones that are more recent and are amazing for the money. They don't sell for too much because in general they made so damn many. A friend just bought some wicked single humbucker jap made Ibanez with the locking tremolo, wizard III neck, and full thickness bound body for $500. They are really good bargains where the dollar to performance ratio goes.

@ [Berserker] -- I won't get my ass handed to me on it, believe me. There's always some kid who has a perfectly nice guitar, but hates the way it looks enough to swap it for a hot-rodded cheap guitar that looks cool. And, if worse comes to worse, I'll just have a cool-looking, hot-rodded guitar to play when the notion strikes -- until someone makes me an offer I can't refuse.
I actually wouldn't mind getting a really beaten-up, but serviceable guitar to make a refinishing project out of. So, really, I'm in this more for fun than profit. But, I just figured as cheap as the Dean is, it'll make good swap-bait, and I can always trade up incrementally. Just takes a little patience.

I'm the same way with guitars. It simply does me no good to handle them like newborn children. They're going to get scraped, and they're going to get dinged, and they're going to get crap spilled on them and kicked over. That's why I buy them used -- same as I did with my last two camera bodies, both of which still work just fine.
Now, if I ever get enough mad money to go out and buy a brand new Les Paul or American Telecaster, it'll be a different story. But, I don't see that ever happening. So, I might as well get cheap ones and have as much fun with them as I can rather than worrying about taking a bath on the resale value.

There is some truth in that. I have 3 levels of guitars. My vintage/collectables, my gig guitars, and my beaters. I have more fun with the beaters these days than I had in a long time, because I just don't have to worry about them. The gig guitars are good ones, but they are sacrificial lamb/road dogs, but like the collectables I keep them in a more climate controlled environment, especially in the winter when the forced air heat dries the shit out of everything. The beaters I keep in a rack by the computer and the hell with the climate. Usually with the good ones I would have to rotate them so none stayed in the dry air for any length of time. The past few years I started looking for really good playing and sounding cheapies that can just sit here, plus it don't bother me if I accidentally whack the desk them.

As for the other three, anytime anyone has asked me what I paid for them, they're surprised at how cheaply I got them. There's a certain satisfaction to be found in that -- especially after they like the way it plays more than their own, considerably more expensive, guitar.
I think I can accomplish that with the Dime.

You won't regret getting a real Les Paul or Telecaster. Especially an old one. They're only going to get more expensive. For lower cost, Epiphone or Ibanez for Gibson and the Ibanez oldies are excellent, or Squire for Telecaster. Don't understand the hate for Squire. They're fine and cheap. They go alright up against the reissues, as I've found. No complaints. Not considering the $$$.

That's pretty much the voyage I have been on. I picked up a 2003 Ibanez SX320Bk last week for $200. The damn thing plays like lightning and sounds incredible. It gives some of my best shit a run for it's money, and that $325 Dean V pretty much holds it's own next to my gibsons. The beauty of finding them used with a few nicks and dings, you'll never notice any new ones you might put in it. On the other hand, those dings tell a story. I have an early 90's white gibson V, and it really aged. The white slowly turned to a shit butter color, it has little dings and bruises, but it was a road dog, and man if it could talk. I toyed around with the idea of refinishing it, but after thinking about it I realized that all I would be doing is erasing my history.

I'm not sure about being able to find enough old stuff to make another one. I have toyed around with the idea of perhaps getting a kit from Carvin and assembling it myself. My old teacher, Beaver, has a couple and they sound really good, especially for his style of slap bass. Oh, ok. That sounds about right. Thanks. I know what I'd like to have, but I dunno about getting it done, without old parts.

Probably not maintaining situational awareness, combined with ATC not paying attention. There's like 4 airfields all with runways oriented in the almost exact same direction in a 12 mile radius there. McConnell is by far the largest, but based on a quick look at the sat images, Jabara looks a lot like a 1/2 scale McConnell, and it's straight out off McConnell's strip going north by about 11 miles.
