The Giveaway that Global Warmening is a Scam

People will bullshit with their mouth but almost never with their own money.

"The high cost of coastal homes in New York and Los Angeles is on its own a market signal that the alleged threat of global warming is well overdone. Even worse for those who buy into the theory of global warming that says a planetary crack-up is inevitable absent a substantial human response, is that Malibu, Manhattan and the Hamptons are filled with the very people who, when asked if they believe in the global warming theory, would most likely say yes. Ok, so Ted Danson owns in Martha's Vineyard, noted environmental activist Laurie David does too, and then Al Gore is known to have purchased a coastal palazzo in Montecito, CA. What this tells us is that even global warming's most famous advocates don't believe very deeply in their own activism. To believe the warmists we're sitting idle as Rome supposedly burns, but as evidenced by the popularity of coastal property among warmists and non-warmists alike, the market says the 'science' predicting catastrophe is utter nonsense."

Slate: The Global Warming Pause Proves That Anti-Global Warming Efforts Work

At this point AGW is simply non-falsifiable: There is literally no experiment or outcome you can predict that climate change believers will accept as proof it's false. Which tells you it's really a matter of religious faith instead of science.

Meanwhile the Global Warming global bandwagon seems to be unraveling: UN climate talks fall apart as 132 countries storm out

Mostly because wealthy countries aren't willing to hand over money to the poor countries for all the non-occurring global warming. I particularly like how the Australian government who have publicly repudiated AGW hysteria are treating the shakedown climate talks:

Australian diplomats have also thrown a wrench into the negotiations, as poor countries and activists accused them of not taking the talks seriously. The country did not even send high-ranking officials to the UN summit, saying that they would be busy repealing the country's contentious carbon tax.

"They wore T-shirts and gorged on snacks throughout the negotiation. That gives some indication of the manner they are behaving in," said a spokeswoman for the Climate Action Network.

Great Leftist Rebuttals: "The idea that young people won't go on to the exchanges is very gendered."

Huh?

Also Racist: Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

Because Latinos and other immigrants are simply unable to comprehend the concept of smearing stuff on sliced bread and this kind of White Man magic scares and oppresses them.

Banned in Canada: Doorknobs

Henceforth doorknobs are no longer allowed in new Vancouver construction. Because old people and arthritis.

In Vancouver, the doorknob is heading into a setting sun. Its future has been date-marked, legislated out of existence in all future construction, a tip to society's quest for universal design and the easier-to-use lever handle.

...In September, Vancouver council adopted new amendments to its building code, effective next March, that, among other things, will require lever handles on all doors and lever faucets in all new housing construction.

Whoa - Did the US Government Kill Brittany Murphy and Her Husband?

Okay this has got to be one of the wilder conspiracy theories but there's enough evidence that the government harassed Department of Homeland Security whistleblower, Julia Davis, with every tool at their disposal and had Murphy and her husband under surveillance that you can't reject it out of hand. Now given Murphy and Monjack's known drug habits this is probably what actually killed them - but on the other hand there are several people associated with the Davis case who are now dead and that seems worthy of further investigation.

Salon's Alternate Reality: The right's in a box - Here's how GOP loses Obamacare fight

Hoo boy normally publishing this would be grounds for a drug test.

The fact that Affordable Care Act enrollments are spiking in states that have functioning exchange websites of their own is great news for the law and for the many thousands of people who will be newly, or better, insured come Jan. 1.

Married? Well ObamaCare has a special treat for you. And by treat I mean a pretty hefty extra yearly bill.

A married couple is eligible for the federal subsidies if they make less than 400% above what the government considers poverty, but the poverty line for marrieds is lower than the combined level for couples living together. The unmarried couple could have a higher income and still reap the benefit of subsidies.

What you subsidize, you get more of. What you punish, you get less of.

Does Big Philanthropy Actually Help People?

Short answer: Not really. Of all the famed public philanthropists - Oprah, Bill Clinton, Angelina Jolie, etc  - Bill Gates has probably done the most but at best his charity has had only marginal effects. Mostly because it targets things that sound nice in speeches rather than what's known to work

Between 2000 and 2005, to take just one of its myriad projects, the foundation spent $1 billion constructing small schools in the United States. Gates believed that American public schools were mediocre because classes were too large. Student academic achievement did not improve, though, and the foundation eventually abandoned the project after its director conceded failure and resigned. Unlike Winfrey, Gates admitted his mistake, for which he deserves credit. But the presumed virtue of small schools was based solely on his own intuition; it had no basis in science. Will Gates similarly recognize and reverse his foundation's African folly?

Was George Zimmerman Framed by His Ex-Girlfriend?

the TMZ website reports sources close to Zimmerman as saying Scheibe told him she was six weeks pregnant after he made it clear he was leaving her and leaving Florida.

Zimmerman reportedly offered to make a child custody and support deal, but what Scheibe really wanted was for them to stay together.

When she saw Zimmerman packing his bags, the sources claim she decided to make up the story of him pointing the gun at her as revenge.

Her on-again-off-again pregnancy story is kind of fishy. So I guess we'll have to return to the old Zimmerman Rule of not taking any MSM report relating to him at face value. And he needs to get out of Florida and get back to his roots in Peruvia.

I can't recall who said it, but their comment on Hollyweird celebrities dashing about between global warming events by private jet -- the single most outrageously carbon-spewing means of travel you could ever imagine -- was that "I'll start to act like this is a 'planetary emergency' just as soon as they do."

Zimmerman either needs to move back in with his Peruvian parents for a while or if he has a friend with a cabin in the boonies, a friend who is absolutely trustworthy, move in with him. Oh and if an attractive woman starts chatting him up, he should remember the "It's a trap!" observation of our favorite Admiral and run the other way.

yes. Thank you thank you thank you. That Bill Gates small school experiment is why I am so extremely angry at him and his so-called "philanthropy" and why all of his support for common core should be brought into question.

He ruined the high school I graduated from with his "small school" experiment. The school district ended up shutting it down and shipping the neighborhood kids to other high schools. Only, the neighborhood kids (the neighborhood being a poor minority neighborhood) didn't go to the other schools because of their home situations and the difficulties for them. So, students that had been in high school on their way to graduating ended up high school drop outs. The superintendent managed to reverse the problem (which he was half responsible for) but it was really bad.

55 I was thinking today, as I often do when at work and not wanting to work, about the state of our world. When did we become so cynical and nasty? Has it always been so or did we live for a time in an unusual age of innocence, optimism, civility and common moral values? Or does nostalgia and the censored, cherry-picked nature of memories distort how we view the past? It does feel as though the world is a meaner, sadder, more selfish place. The stories one reads each day of social media bullying driving kids to suicide, of youths roaming around seeking for innocent people to hit in the face as hard as they can because they're bored and think it's fun, of the visceral hatred that divides our country along political lines, of the utter lowness of our social and public discourse. Where did it begin? Was it in the 60s with the 'cultural revolution'? That seems a likely starting point. The throwing off of traditional morality, the obsession with ourselves and our sensory pleasure- the 'me-first' mentality. The 'sexual revolution' leading to the destruction of moral barriers that encouraged and held together the family unit. The continual pushing of boundaries as to what's appropriate in media to the point where we're desensitized to almost everything. Nothing shocks us anymore. I saw a headline today saying the reason Lady Gaga's album flopped is because the shock value of her persona has worn off. If we're no longer shocked as a society by Lady Gaga, are we even capable of attaining the feeling? So much of what has, for most of human existence, been considered beautiful, noble and virtuous is now mocked and scorned as quaint relics of a simple-minded past. Nothing is sacred anymore. Nothing is universally valued, held to, or considered good. The definition of the adjective 'base' is morally low, without estimable personal qualities, dishonorable, mean-spirited, selfish and cowardly. I think that's a very apt way of describing the state of our culture.

Jeebus, Seattle's truly gone crazy."

Wow. Just wow.

And this was _cheered_, per the article.

That faint rumbling sound you just heard was hundreds of millions of dollars of new business investment being redirected away from the state of Washington. And by no means only by Boeing.

If I were an executive in Redmond, I'd be starting to wonder about when the socialist loonies were going to start pushing something like an excise tax on software revenues. For the children, and the planet, y'know?

"Sawant says after workers 'take-over' the Everett Boeing plant; they could build things everyone can use. 'We can re-tool the machines to produce mass transit like buses, instead of destructive, you know, war machines,' she told KIRO 7."

Since building buses worked out so brilliantly for Grumman Aircraft Corporation.

And is a Triple Seven a "destructive, you know, war machine"? I rode on one a few months ago and didn't notice any weapons. Maybe they're hidden. In the same secret bays in the fuselage next to the chemtrail spray tanks. Capitalist imperialist pigs are crafty.

But I keep coming back to the brilliant bus idea.

Last time I was at Boeing, they had an absolutely enormous assembly jig that had been purpose-built from scratch for the single reason of accurately joining airliner wings to wing boxes. It weighs a couple of hundred tons and employs laser interferometry. It should be a total snap to "re-tool" a device like that to spin lug nuts onto a bus wheel. Piece of cake. Done by lunchtime.

I am really asking sincerely. Why do the secular humanists care so much? If it's all bullshit, but it's not intruding on your life? It's not like the AGW shit that DOES affect us. They are free to live their lives the way they choose. So WHY? Do they care  and exert so much energy on it?

This PB&J story is condescending racism, like how liberals get offended for Oriental people when you refer to them as Oriental instead of "Asian",  or referring to Black people as Blacks instead of "Afro-American".

Hispanics know nothing about wheat bread, they only know about "maize" for their "tortillas".   And Chinese and Japanese only know about rice, so PB&Js are naturally racist since only white folk eat that.

167 Didn't a black man invent peanut butter? Hello, my name is Professor Shabazz K. Morton. In 1895, at the Tuskagee Institute in Alabama, a black man named George Washington Carver developed a new method of soul.. soil.. improvement through crop rotation.. [ a couple of audience members snicker at Murphy's blooper, causing him to break character ] So I messed up - SHUT UP! [ adjusting his shades so he can read the cue cards ] Stop clapping before y'all make me smile! [ back in character ] ..to end the South African cultural dependence on cotton alone. As a result, Carver came up with hundreds of industrial uses for the peanut. Sure, industrial uses. Meanwhile, one night, he's having a few friends over to his house for dinner. And one of them leans over and says to Dr. Carver, "Excuse me, George? What's that your putting on your bread?" Carver says, "Oh, that's nothing but a butter substitute that I made from peanuts. I can't digest all that animal fat, you know." So the other fellow tasted it, and he says, "Hmm.. this pastes pretty.. this tastes.." [ the audience again laughs at Murphy's blooper, causing him to break character again ] Yeah? Keep on smiling. [ back in character ] "This tastes pretty good, man. Mind if we take a peek at the recipe?" And Dr. Carver says, "Take a peek? Man, you can have it. Who's gonna eat butter made out of peanuts? No, I'm working on a method to compress peanuts into phonograph needles." So, Professor Carver's two dinner guests.. [ Murphy removes his shades for better cue card reading ] ..Edward "Skippy" Williamson and Frederick "Jif" Armstrong - two white men - stole George Washington Carver's recipe for peanut butter, copyrighted it, and reaped untold fortunes from it. While Dr. Carver died penniless and insane, still trying to play a phonograph record with a peanut. This has been "Black History Minute". I'm Professor Shabazz K. Morton. Good night.

236 OK, true Kennedy story. (posted before). In the mid-70's a crazy man named Carroll Jornegon (sp?) lived on the edge of Rose Hill Cemetary. No house was closer to Oswald's grave than his. He had ponds on his property full of bass. If you took him a pint of whiskey, he'd let you fish while he pontificated on various things, including the claim that he was one of Jack Ruby's lawyers and more. People said he pretended to be crazy to stay alive. He was very good at acting like an insane yet not dangerous person. He wore a black duster in the heat of summer. He intimated that he "knew things" but was somewhat incoherent when he tried to talk about the subject, tending to speak in parables and metaphors. Good bass fishing though. I always thought there was some hidden meaning in his dissertation on Mr. Sun and Mr. Moon, which he would read at a shout while we fished. But I couldn't get it.

237 Re big charity, I just tweeted out several tweets re a Bill and Melinda Gates charity article linked at Drudge. They have awarded a $100k grant for research into creating graphene/latex blend condoms. Which, in itself, might be a good thing. There will most certainly be a market for a thinner, sensitivity-preserving condom, but... they are covering it in the do-gooder language of fighting poverty. What makes them think a better condom is the solution to poverty? Have the citizens of the most impoverished nations given them any indication whatsoever that they seek this solution? I mean, if swatting flies from the face of your shriveled, dying children isn't a boner-killer, what the hell makes them think condoms are? What makes them think Hey! If only they had a BETTER rubber they'd stop introducing children into poverty? It's their money to do with as they wish, but let's just cut the bullshit. Okay?

266 Hi everybody, I guess I'm back to stalking the AOS ONTs once again.

I had a chance to listen to some of a call by NVIDIA Corporation today, encouraging investment in their company. NVIDIA is basically a chip maker and technology design company that also does video cards and some other tech.

Anyway, one thing their Investor Relations guy, Ron (?) Csongas, said today that I quite remember: "by 2017, all cars will have LTE." Meaning, cell phone technology that can be used for GPS and location tracking as well as for communication.

The first thing I thought of when he said that is, "I wonder if Ace's readers will be taking webinars on how to yank those chips out of their new cars by then?"

285 Bitch Bitch Bitch! KillerÂ’s daughter angry over how execution went down By Brooke Adams | The Salt Lake Tribune Joseph Paul FranklinÂ’s death early Wednesday came as a shock to his oldest sister Carolyn Sheffield and his daughter, Lori Gresham. Sheffield said she received a telephone call from "Jimmy," as she calls her brother, about 4:20 a.m. MST. He sounded "chipper," she said. "He sounded like he was in a good mood." He told his sister only that he was in a room near the execution chamber. "I donÂ’t think he was afraid to die because he had accepted the Lord," Sheffield said. "He was sorry for everything heÂ’d done." She said her brother had a tendency to "exaggerate" and she does not believe he committed all the crimes he claimed. "I just want you to relate a message to [Missouri] Gov. [Jay] Nixon," Sheffield, her voice choked with emotion. "Who does he think he is? God has control over life. I donÂ’t believe in the death penalty, but he should not have done that after my brother stayed in prison 33 years. The son of a b----, that Nixon is. ... he knew better." Gresham, 34, received a call after the execution from her fatherÂ’s attorneys. The daughter of FrankinÂ’s second wife and a resident of Alabama, she said she was "really mad about how they went about [the execution]." She was sleeping when she got a call Wednesday about 6:30 a.m. telling her he had been executed. "I did get to say goodbye to him," she said. "I told him I loved him and he told me he loved me. IÂ’m sorry for the families of the victims if they didnÂ’t get a chance to do that to their loved ones. I send them my condolences. IÂ’m sorry my dad did all of this. I apologize for my dad and IÂ’m sorry he caused so much hurt and pain in their families. He caused a lot in mine, too." Franklin was briefly maried twice. Gresham, his only child, was born during the middle years of his killing spree. http://goo.gl/zdL59B Next time, stay awake!

Rattled, the teacher quickly ends the lesson. When school let's out, she heads straight for Billy's house, knocks on the door and demands an explanation sifting Billy's dad. Actually, a better question might be how much damage does big-name philanthropy do?  I'm thinking more of the Ford Foundation/et al.  At one time they probably did some good stuff, but since I have been aware of them and exposed to their output they have been, without hyperbole, on net a negative phenomenon.   The pernicious idiocy promoted by foundations in the area of national security and foreing policy is actually material, I'd say, in taking what has become an unserious country and making it actually dumber.

Gates?  I recall, maybe 10 years ago, picking up a book of his in the bookstore (The Way Ahead or some such?  can't believe I even remember that much).  Looked through it a bit.  Wow.  Pretty stupid, and pedestrian, and stupid again.  Like most famous/rich people, seems Gates really isn't very bright outside his own narrow niche.  It is actually surprising sometimes how unworldly and superficial otherwise brilliant or successful people are.  Worst of course are those who hit it big and then spend $$$ and their influence promoting policies that hinder prosperity, destroy freedom - and in effect make it less likely someone can follow their path in the future.

402 "One good thing about the [knockout game] incidents is it really kicked my ass back into situational awareness. Not that it ever stopped, but lax."

I had a moment a few weeks ago where I got a message on my phone while on the street in SF. Normally I ignore those things while in public.

This time I was tired and pissed-off and not on my game. Pulled out the phone and started paying attention to it rather than to my surroundings. Bad idea.

Looked up half a minute later to an aggressive alcoholic "homeless" guy right in my face who had walked right up on me without my noticing. If he had been an actual mugger, I would have been easy meat.

From now on I'm going to harden my stance about ignoring the phone while in public. Fortunately, in SF, there are a bajillion trendy metrosexual idiots who are _constantly_ head-down on their iShit. Even if I get distracted once in a while, being in a crowd of sheep improves my odds against the wolves.

torque and Wolf, naturally I share your candidate wishes in terms of (a) and (b) - and share torque's despair re (c) - but my take is actually completely different on the 2012 races.

MO and IN are two of the most sensible/least-idiotic states in the country (yes, a dramatically lowered bar of late, but there you are).  To me it is just one more sign of the degradation and character failure of the country that the Dem candidates got within 10%, much less won.  Yes, even given the circumstances of the campaign.

I don't care, in the 2012 context, if the GOP candidate talked about their alien abduction experiences - while otherwise showing an understanding of the important issues and a sane approach to them.  And the important issues in 2012 were more important, and more salient, than any have been in at least a generation.  You'd think that to most voters in MO and IN (those states not being CA or NY), there would be, dunno, some urgency, some fear, some deep concern about the course of the country.  And - a strong desire to stop the madness.  And enough seriousness and maturity to roll their eyes at the irrelevant gaffes of the GOP candidates and vote (enthusiastically) to stop the destruction of the country.

So I have nothing but contempt for MO and IN voters (GOP and "independents"..... Dems are beneath contempt at this point) - they are no less damaging to the country, its institutions and future, than the most vacuous lib dipshits in CA or NYC or Boston.   Akin and (especially) Mourdock provided them no excuse.  They voted for the degrading, disastrous, lawless, unconstitutional chaos we are now enjoying.  Just as much as any airheaded voter in Waxman's district or craven self-dealing public sector union member in OH who voted for Bambi.

Because candidates made stupid comments having no bearing whatsoever on any issue they would ever deal with, voters with a brain felt it neccessary to throw a large log on the pyre of the declining nation?  When it was obvious that in the Senate these guys would in fact oppose the crap these same voters are probably even now whining about?  We don't deserve a bit of the nonsense going on in America today, but I have to point out that the people in MO and IN who voted against the GOP senate candidates deserve every bit of it, as much as the ridiculous congressional staff now whining about their health insurance, or the many LIV "educated" suburbanites who will see their insurance situation detonated in the next six months.

I pray that when GZ gets out of this, he leaves FL behind. They have proven themselves to have an utterly corrupt legal system -- and even the Republicans were after him (Scott and Biondi). If I were GZ I wouldn't want that state to have another dime from me. Heck, so long as Barack-If-I-Had-A-Son-Obama is POTUS, GZ should leave the country. Further, no new relationships, not while the Traybots and Holder are still after him.

I hear you, but to the average voter, voting for someone who thinks women are rape proof, or someone who admits that they used to be a witch, or someone who can't put a sentence together does NOT equal "ending the madness".

tbh, after hearing Akin say what he said, I probably would have had a hard time voting for him just because you have to be in the top 5% of stupid to say what he did. Same with Christine O'Donnell. She just seemed flaky to me.

Mourdock was a different story, since he was a good candidate torpedoed by the GOP establishment and his own bad timing.

My comment, for the record, was more about my personal preference. I want to vote for a strong conservative in my state who I can be proud of and don't have to defend on anything other than ideological grounds.

Although I think the establishment didn't do as much to torpedo Mourdock as just his own flubbed off the cuff response.

If we define Mourdocks as otherwise electable, serious, solid candidates, what we need to drill into the skulls of Mourdocks is that there are certain questions, and rape induced pregnancy is an exemplar, where answers have to be carefully devised and faithfully memorized in advance.

lewy14: What is interesting to me is the information this act by Reid conveys. The game theoretic implications are obvious - this is a "defection" - and just as obviously the Democrats seem not to worry about the consequences. Implication being that they feel confident in their permanent majority - there will never again be GOP control over the Senate, or a GOP President. Plausible, considering that Chris Christie is effectively part of the D establishment and the rest of the GOP insiders are spending more time trying to crush the Tea Party than the Democrats. The GOP would much rather be the permanent loyal opposition and rake influence $$ from that position rather than risk governing. (After Bush, I see their point.)

Having to govern in coalition with actual Constitutional, Liberty minded people from the Tea Party is the GOP nightmare - not Obama and his ilk. The Democrats of course know this and are happy to oblige. The Democrats also pick up added urgency from their base - now all the Senate races become very high stakes because they will determine court appointments which will last decades. It could be that the money that Reid just attracted to the Senate races will allow them to keep that slim majority; after that, the next President is at worst a RINO who can be kept in check by the bureaucracy and the press, and after that, the demographics and dependency kick in and the nation is permanently blue.

I realize that reasonable people may disagree and claim that it's misdirection to worry / favor one team above the other, but it seems prudent to acknowledge that the terms of the game have shifted. When the powers that be assume the form of an institutional party with a permanent majority, then yes, that team becomes the enemy

I despair to think of the enormous 15 point lead which Akin had in MO before opening his mouth, which instantly evaporated afterward. That one race was a slam dunk easy win without the gaffe.

Bertram Cabot wonders if Mourdock could have won if Lugar and the rest of the IN establishment Republicans had actually backed him in the general. I do wonder about that myself. I don't think that question can definitely be answered. It was a less clear-cut race than Akin's was, and the lead was a lot smaller.

Though, on the other hand, if Mourdock had squeaked in, he would no doubt have been a steady, noncontroversial figure once in office.

Whereas the Akin who inadvertently revealed himself in that one interview would have been a perpetual problem for the GOP had he won by a double-digit landslide, which he would no doubt have taken as "God's will" to advance his loopy views. Imagine six years of that guy doing constant damage.

Posted by: torquewrench at November 22, 2013 12:55 AM (gqT4g) Actually, this is why "career politicians" make better candidates for offices like Senator/Gov/Pres etc. because they know how to deal with the media. These guys didn't. Knowing how to answer questions and when to shut up is something that some politicians never learn. Watch Bill Clinton answer a question. He pauses for a few seconds before answering to decide how and what to say. Don't like the guy, but he knows how to operate with the media. Watch GW Bush in his debates with Kerry. He would be asked a question and he answered, but he still had "time left". The moderators were shocked that he didn't use up his full time, he just gave a concise answer and pretty much told them to move on. Now, compare to Akin and Mourdock. They were asked questions and answered them, but, they still had "time left". Instead of shutting their pie holes, they decide they need to keep on talking because they have "time". This is where the problems always happen. Reporters use this all the time, and politicians fall for it all the time. The reporter asks a question, politician answers, reporter doesn't say anything but just holds up the mic, politician decides to keep talking because "open mic ermagod".

490 We took a little trip around the Eastern Sierras recently. First night was in a Motel 6 in Mammoth Lakes. The guy at the hotel desk told us we needed to take absolutely everything that might tempt a bear - including scented cleaners -- out of our car or else the creature might tear it apart. If it did so the police would FINE us because hey, we were warned, it would be all our fault. And it happened regularly, because the demolishing was being done by four specific bears that hung around Mammoth so persistently that everyone knew them by "name". "Um, seems to me this would be a problem a few bullets could put to right" sez hubby. "Oh no!" sez the clerk, "you'd go to jail for years and years...." Next night we had booked in a tiny settlement near Bodie. Geez, we thought, if a well-known ski resort had such problems, what would face in the hinterlands? So we asked. The lady said there were some bears in the area, but none of them bothered the folks outside of an occasional rattling trash can. Did we have to evacuate the car? Oh no. Only one time in fifteen years did a bear touch a car, and it belonged to (snicker) an off-duty forest ranger idiot enough to keep his catch in a cooler in the back of his truck overnight. We explained our nervousness about the subject by relaying the situation in Mammoth Lakes. "Well, people in Mammoth have a different...relationship with bears than we do. We had a bear hang 'round like that once for a few months. But he got shot the first day of bear season."

494 This season is proof that Matt Ryan is a good, capable quarterback who can do well in the NFL with playmaking receivers, but without them is incapable of creating wins with so-so receivers. Look what Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady have been able to do with no-name receivers: that's what makes them great, and Hall of Famers.

torque, what "damage" could Akin have done, compared to what McCaskill does, all day long, day in and day out?

As long as he voted the right way, who gives a f**k about gaffes?  I mean, in 2012.  As you well know, this is not a normal time.  The train really is off the rails - fiscally, constitutionally, for rule of law, hell even for the atmospherics that used to distinguish the US from Third World hellholes (see today's mau-mau event at Cantor's residence).

I'll take someone as embarrassingly dumb and unworldly as McCain, Obama, Biden, or Boxer - if they vote the right way.  We're talking about desperate measures.  Most of the Democratic incumbents say (and believe) things as idiotic as Akin's stuff - but they're actually wrecking the country by implementing their idiocy.  Akin's silliness is utterly immaterial to the duties or powers of a senator, while the delusions and alien impulses of his opponent and her ilk are greatly damaging the country, probably beyond repair (in our lifetimes).

532 I just watched a bit by a Seattle 1% about "Rich People Don't Create Jobs" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKCvf8E7V1g -- and I can see a bit of his point....but I utterly reject a whole bunch of it, as well.

Essentially, he's saying that consumer demand creates jobs, so (in his view) pampering average consumers creates more benefits than reasonable tax rates on the wealthy.

It's so easy to square this circle that I'm surprised he elides over it.....rich people create temporary jobs, consumer demand creates permanent ones. The question then arises, how many things are offered to consumers that are passed over? Let's take, for instance, something easy -- movies. Let's say a studio funds four movies at $20M each, and two make $10M, one makes $25M, and one makes $100M. How goes with the studio? Well, they funded four flicks at $80M and made $145M....things go well.

So, why not just make the $100M movie? Because nobody knew which one it was going to be. What about the $40M costs sunk into the two that lost money? Those were REAL JOBS CREATED that were unsupported by consumer demand. How do you think the folks who were employed there would react if you told 'em that rich people shouldn't have provided 'em a job???

Would poor people have created jobs in four flicks when three were destined to fail? Is it "fair" that investors in each flick should pay the same tax rate as the guys who got steady work making 'em, being that there was a 50% chance of hitting a loss that was non-deductible, and a further 25% chance that they'd barely make minimum wage?

It really doesn't get much simpler -- rich people create a disproportionate amount of jobs for new enterprises that may never latch onto sufficient consumer demand.

That said, the speaker does have a point......if the wealthy are starting new businesses, making new movies, rolling the dice -- then, and only then, are they worthy of cherishing and nurturing to help the economy thrive. But, unfortunately, there is another way that the wealthy allocate their resources.....and that is to lobby government to protect their position or thwart competition. That's where corn farmers legislate us into biofuels, compact fluorescent makers ban light bulbs, and litigators defeat rational limits on malpractice awards, among other things. In those cases, it is clearly against the public interest to incentivize and reward such behavior.

But each of these bad behaviors is bonded to the Leviathan he wishes to fund. It's not so much that the rich shouldn't be taxed because they create jobs, but that they shouldn't be taxed so much that they spend their time chasing patronage instead of pursuing activities that create jobs.

554 It really doesn't get much simpler -- rich people create a disproportionate amount of jobs for new enterprises that may never latch onto sufficient consumer demand.

and demand is sometimes created by investment

559 From the New York Times article in the previous thread about how even though Lee Harvey Oswald was a communist like their reporters, editors and readers, the Kennedy assassination was really due to right wing H8.

"Blocks from Dealey Plaza, the windows of restaurants and the lobbies of hotels are plastered with posters reading “Love” — a nonprofit group’s campaign, using artwork by schoolchildren and others, to counter the City of Hate label given Dallas after the assassination."

I wonder if we could get "City of Hate" on our license plates.  Maybe it would discourage lefties from economically failed northern states and California from moving here.

566 If white Hispanics like George Zimmerman are aware that sandwiches exist do they get to be members of White Privilege and learn the secret handshake? If so, I suggest he be made Sergeant at Arms.

567 The sidebar article about the dead mall in St. Louis states that one reason for the decline in malls is that people really like to go outside.  Are they nuts?  Maybe in L.A. or San Diego, sure.  But in the The Great Steambath (aka the American South)?  Only crazy people willingly walk around outdoors from March to November.

I know.  There are a lot of 'em where I live.  And our malls are nicely air-conditioned, thankyouverymuch.
